What a church should do when they are doing the Service Of The Tenbrae, they should chop this song up into 2 or 3 or 4 verses per "hymn". Because this hymn is very long. In the hymnbook, it looks like 3 or 4 hymns.
The churches of my circuit (in LCMS Southern District) will be uniting in a Tre Ore (three hours, noon to 3:00 p.m.) service tomorrow. This hymn divides into the seven words, each of which shall be preached in a separate homily accompanied by that verse sung. Four hours later is the Tenebrae. Good Friday, being the atonement of sins celebration, is the most important day on the calendar and therefore needs to be honored with at least four hours of services.
I loved Good Friday Service. That's when they sang it at church.
