HP Reverb G2 VR Headset - As Good As They Say for Sim Racing?

  • The HP Reverb is now starting to ship out to customers. On paper, with the same panel resolution and field of view as the G1, it may not seem like much of an upgrade. But it's been hyped for months now as potentially the best VR Headset for Sim Racing due to it's improved optics in particular.
    So come along as I take it for its first drive and see if it lives up to the hype.

    G2 owner here... one thing that helps with the sweet spot is pulling the back of the headset behind your cranium so it’s resting more on your top vertebrae like e helmet, then you can make easier adjustments with the pitch of the headset to get a larger sweet spot. I’ve enjoyed watching your videos as I’ve set up my rig and excited to get into it more and more, learning new things every day!

    I have found its important to pair the headset with a VR friendly sim for a good racing experience. For me a well optimized sim for VR is more important then the headset, not to take anything away from a top spec set like the HP. Finding a well optimized VR racing sim can give a good racing experience on a wide variety of headsets. I am a long time VR user and love seeing the VR hardware improvements of headsets and video cards, its a win for all

Being relatively new to sim racing as a COVID convert I've been using a single monitor, but pre-ordered the G2 and just received it yesterday. Keep up the good work.

  • @MikkoRantalainen
    @MikkoRantalainen Před 3 lety

    I would guess the actually working IPD adjustment is the most important for comfort. You can use headset without a correct IPD setting but it will cause more eye-strain. (And when I wrote "actually working" I mean something that actually moves optics. Just offsetting pixels without moving optics is not real IPD setting but a hack to allow the headset to be used *at all* with incorrect IPD configuration.)

  • @jacooosthuizen3593
    @jacooosthuizen3593 Před 11 měsíci +1

    I purchased this G2 two years back and it still holds up till this day. i have not upgraded my nvidia 1080 yet but i can tell you if you can run this headset native it sure is clear and crisp. i found in steam VR if you can run it instead of 100% run the game at 150% and the sweet spot becomes better.

  • @edwardenigma1929
    @edwardenigma1929 Před 2 lety +4

    Bought one, returned 2 days later. Sweet spot the size of a half dollar, all text outside that are very blurry. Rift S more consistent in clarity across the screen. Vibration on controllers is loud and feels cheap not good at all. Bit of pressure point on my temple's not to bad but Rift S much more comfort. The cable is thick and very grippy so will pull on you. When you first start up a lot of ghosting effects until it heats up, and screen door until it warms up. 10 mins or so then gone. If you want to surf the web you can not scroll with the controllers. You will have to use a mouse as well. Wanna type in search bar, your gonna need to lift up headset and use physical keyboard. Tried playing Pavlov you can not use 2 hands on weapons. Right hand will grip but left hand does not grip the weapon. So I'm guessing custom mapping is needed. Have heard this is the case on many other games. Cant hit anything with only 1 hand on a machinegun. God rays are very noticeable on the G2 V2, my Rift S never really noticed them. I purchased on sale for 499 but still not worth that. maybe $350. In games the sweet spot is not as bad, you really don't see it much but, on anything else you can only read 2 words and then left and right of those 2 words are blurry and the next ones very blurry. I wanted to love this but I'm going back to Rift S. Controllers hit when reloading weapons. I really believe the Rift S or Quest 2 are much better at software, easy of use, you can just play and even the screens have much bigger sweet spot. I think if you are sim racing its a great choice the sweet spot not as bad. Sim flying your gonna have to turn your head a lot to see the gauges clearly. I'd wait. The only thing it has going for it is sound and the very small sweet spot. Just my experience. Imma keep my rift s until something better comes along.

Although it runs smoothly in the headset and gets mirrored with high FPS in the monitor. Then I tried recording the game directly from the mirrored window on the monitor but the gameplay is somehow stretched with a weird FOV. Hopefully you can give me a good advice how you did it. Thank you for the review of the G2 VR headset. As I mentioned in one of your other recent videos, I plan to bump up from my Rift S to the G2 for the higher Resolution and clarity. They also fixed the MUIR effect that the G1 had. Hard to show a good video of VR, you almost have to try it, to experience VR.

    @logo8009 Před 3 lety +1

    Looks great. It like the view sitting further back in the car as, with triples it's hard to sit that far back with a correct FOV. As it would bring the back seat headrest into your field of view or have the car seat adjusted way to low. The only way to correct that with triples a bigger FOV that's not correct. I'm only run 32"s and that's what I found. Most cars are fine but, it's more annoying on the GT3 cars as the cars look to big for the road like Porsche 911 rsr . Interesting.

    Will, can you please share your SteamVR render resolution setting and were you able to keep constant 90fps in the race with the 2080Ti?
    With regard to sweet spot, I'm finding it quite small compared to the Rift S, and I get some obvious chromatic aberration towards the edges on white text on dark background. For example, if I face straight ahead and move my eyes to the right to look at the relatives black box, the white text will have some blue double imaging against the black, same if I look down to the dash. Do you experience the same? I think the sheer clarity and sharpness at the dead centre of the lenses makes the increasing blurriness and then chromatic abberations outside the sweet spot very obvious.

    I absolutely LOVE VR racing I just think a lot of games are a bit unoptimized for it like the F1 game or ACC which makes it gittery
    GT7 is phenomenal tho and I've heard amazing things abt Iracing and Automobilista

    Dude you need to get rid of the rearview mirror it really spoils the immersion in VR😉 Love the video you may have convinced me to upgrade 🙈💸💸

      I do the same thing in my G2 now. I have been trying to limit the UI as much as I can. Makes it easier for my brain to turn off and just get into it.

My eyes also getting tired because its to bright , to be honnest i also need to change my good old GTX 1060 haha , save some money first .

    Hi, I wanted to know if you can wear Prescription Eyeglasses with this VR Headset, are there Spacers Available for People like me that need to wear Prescription Eyeglasses since I'm Farsighted? Thanks.

    Love your content, keep it up! Do you have a guide to how you set the G2 up in windows? I'm trying to determine the ideal settings in Windows Mixed Reality + Steam VR + ACC. I'm really thrown off by the resolution per eye setting in Steam since it doesn't match anything. Thanks!

    I really enjoy my G2 but there is no substitution for quality headset. My Grado SR225 pairs well with the G2 and will no return to the stock ear pieces anytime soon.

    I have a pimax 5K plus I just bought the g2 I'm hoping that there is less screen door in the g2 and that it is a little clearer. I just pre-ordered it I don't have it yet.

    I’m currently using a PSVR with iVRy. VR drops my jaw every time I use it. I think the G2 is my next upgrade if I can get one. NO MORE MR. MAGOO 🥸.

    • @billyelliotx
      @billyelliotx Před 3 lety

      How is iVRy with PSVR? I heard it's a bit of a pain to set up. But you also don't get 3D head space tracking (like when he's in the open wheel cockpit and moving his head up and around) so you're limited to the headset gyro tracking?

    • @splatracer7726
      @splatracer7726 Před 3 lety

      PSVR has pretty low res so for racing it makes corners hard to see in the distance. For entry level VR it’s cheap, cheerful and functional enough. It’s not too hard to set up but you need to make sure the iVRy driver is set to Direct VR. You can ‘head space it with several old PS3 cams but I don’t really think it’s worth the trouble. Essentially with just the headset you pivot 3 axis on the drivers neck. Very functional. I moved from console so I already had one knocking about.

    Big disappointment when I looked at the connectors, and then I have a second look at my laptop and find a mini display port that magically appeared. Racing seat coming tomorrow.

    I had an Oculus Rift S but I recently sold it because of Facebook. I’m not down.
    I’m in the market for a different one. I just don’t know which is best for sim racing.
    Are there other head sets on the market that don’t require motion tracking bases?
    I loved the Rift for that feature but I loathe Facebook. So the Rift S had to go.

    Much as I do like racing in VR the fact I primarily race in a league I admin in too means I have to keep my number of cars rendered and calculated for physics turned up which means FPS used to tank on the grid even with otherwise optimised settings - though have built myself a far more powerful system since last racing in VR so maybe I should reconsider now 🤔

    how come the fov on the G2 seems smaller than what's on the Rift S and Quest 2?, I thought it was supposed to be a bigger fov? the Quest 2 and Rift S seem to have a bigger fov than the G2, to me anyway, I prefer the Quest 2 until the G2 gets a software update to fix the issues with running Steam Vr games, the resolution on the G2 is barely any better than what's on the Quest 2 and Rift S, maybe Windows Mixed Reality needs a software update to fix some issues, but the headset itself is comfortable to wear
