I think this is my biggest problem! I’m not saying you have it but I have adhd & many people don’t know that this is one of the more problematic symptoms of adhd, just getting started. ADHD is an executive function issue which is why it’s a problem getting started and organizing your thoughts in order to figure out how to go about it. My point is that whether you have it or not, many people find it helpful to follow content creators, Drs, or others that talk about this stuff and give tips, advice etc on it

One of my biggest organizing mistakes: I organized our pantry, but didn’t put labels on the baskets. I just assumed everyone would see what the baskets contained and they’d keep like items together. Nope. Chaos won after only a week or so. I was so discouraged I didn’t fix it for a couple months. Now that the baskets are labeled everyone knows what goes where. It’s been successfully organized for over a year now. 😍

My mom has done this lol. We have very different ways of organizing and associating things. One time I used our PASTA POT MADE FOR MAKING PASTA to make *gasp* PASTA. She got SO mad at me because she always uses a strainer instead when it comes to three of the pastas we use (I can't even remember which ones), and a specific amount of servings determine which strainer she uses. When I tell you this wreaks havoc🤣
All of that is to say, what makes sense to us individually is totally valid, but we as humans sometimes take it for granted and forget that just because it makes sense to us doesn't mean it "makes sense." If that makes sense😅

For upkeep, don't walk back & forth in rooms, have a basket. Anything that doesn't belong in your current room goes on the basket. When you move on to the next room, you take from the basket & put in if necessary. This way you don't get distracted before your room is done.

A pile is where I put the stuff that I don’t know what to do with, don’t want to toss, and think “hey, I’ll fix it later”……knowing full well that I’ll probably never look at or touch again, unless I’m desperately digging for an all important thingy-paper needed right now because my life depends on it…..then the pile’s a mess to never be touched again.
What needs to happen is for someone to invent “the smart paper” that knows when it’s contents are no longer of any use, and voluntarily vanishes.

I never declutter because i dont allow clutter to begin with 😮 Friends say i have Ocd i think its called. The reason my home is always neat, tidy & clutter free is because its the way i was raised. I had a very strict disciplined military father who ran all 5 of us kids like a platoon of soldiers. All orders had to be obeyed pronto. Only sickness was the exception. We all did the dishes, mowed the grass & shoveled snow. We learned to cook, do laundry & how to iron. When i become an adult & lived on my own i had no problems how i lived at all. My entire work career every boss i ever had praised me for my organizational skills in being productive, saving time & money. For me its always just been a normal way of life. Before my father passed away from cancer in 2010 i thanked him for helping me & giving me the basic life skills to take care of myself & my son. Well this has been my story & wish all success in decluttering & any other chores you might tackle. Best wishes 😇💙

OCD is not just a fairly common preference for neatness. OCD is a debilitating anxiety disorder that can only be diagnosed by a qualified mental health professional. It consists of obsessional, intrusive thoughts, and/or repetitive behaviors, compulsions, that are difficult to stop. Sure, obsession with cleanliness, neatness, and order can be a symptom, but so can problematic hoarding.

If your house is really bad, (no judgment, we've all been there) Every day I start in the rooms I've already cleaned before starting a new room. It only takes a minute, but I get my already finished rooms back to 100% . If I don't do this I find by the time I finish my last room my earlier rooms can be bad again. And that's just demoralizing. I am currently doing it all wrong. Reorganizing 450 sq ft apartment all at once. Everything is all over everyplace. But that is me. I sort out the things you do not see, like closets, and work towards the general mess. I am praising myself for seeing the piles go to where they need to go. I am taking the time to put quick masking tape labels on everything, later on I can think about making circuit labels . A lot of the crazy happened when I brought in a LOT of craft materials from my old house. I have been at it for weeks, and I do not recommended it for anyone, but I can see the light at the end of the tunnel and my spaces are so much more organized. So the moral of the tale is, you may have to go about things a way that makes it worse until it gets better. Once this overhaul is finished I can organize like a normal person.

I've been talking about "purging" my clutter for years now. Thank you for making this video - it was difficult to watch the entire thing, but I knew that I needed to hear it. Smaller tasks are definitely the way to go for me. I just have to go into a room with blinders on - looking at an entire room that needs a lot of work instantly triggers my "maybe tomorrow" response.

My stepson’s bedroom was so bad, that, even though I enjoy decluttering, it was a hoarder’s dream (mostly clothes he hasn’t worn in years), and, after 20 mins, I had to leave. Fortunately, he’s taking care of it himself (starting with laundry basket after laundry basket after laundry basket of clothes; I’m 68, and never owned that much clothing in my entire life!).

Thank you for this video. It inspired me this week. I have had my fabric boxes out in my living room for.. ok well we don't need to say how long... and just got overwhelmed when I first pulled them out to measure, fold, catalog and organize on boards to make them easier to see and find. Between your advice of breaking the task down on a list of what needs to be done as smaller goals, and Cassy from Clutterbug talking about setting an alarm for an hour and just do what you can, I made progress on this eyesore. I didn't get a noticeable dent, but I got started, and that felt good. Going to work on it more tomorrow and hopefully over the next few weeks... yes there is so much of it... I'll finally have made a "time to go" pile and the keepers on boards and organized.

Great ideas! Thank you so much for the unrealistic expectations section. There’s just no way you can have the time, money, and energy to keep a home spotless with small children. I tried in pre-Pinterest days. You can’t control the gifts coming in. Each developmental phase seems to require more stuff, too. It’s overwhelming because it’s overwhelming!
I ended up copying my kids’ preschool; the school had centers for each activity. I called them departments. When someone would ask where’s my book, I would say in the book department-the bookcase. Where’s the glue? In the glue department in the linen closet. I whipped up baked goods in the baking department. It did not produce organized adults, but it did save my sanity and make my life much easier.

I’m a pile-maker. How can I tackle it instead of piles?
For kids toys I always got my kids involved. I didn’t say, “go clean up your toys”, I was specific. I would say something like, “put all the Legos in here and tell me when you’re done”. Then, I would praise them and have them do the next small task. They learned how to clean up and it gave them a sense of accomplishment as well. Every mom I shared this with has thanked me.

Same with our clothes - we just need to try to not be so perfect and just be us! I also struggle with stuff that I don't want to/can't throw away yet, but i don't know what to do with it. I just ended up telling myself - this is not a one project deal and tackled one thing then another, it was Mighty Freeing. I like to make my reset time for areas 10 minutes and under excluding the kitchen ( that takes more time). Great video! When I started decluttering I was overwhelmed & tended to get nothing done. It was more...move it to another place until I decide what to do with it. So 1 evening I had about a half hour to myself before bed & I caught my medicine cabinet out of the corner of my eye as I walked past the bathroom. Lightening bolt! I decluttered it within my half hour. The next night it was my spice drawer and my jewelry box the next. I found the key for me! Small bites of time.
My other mind trick (for me) is I ask myself if I could only keep 100 things, would this be one of them? It really helped with sentimental items. Or I pretend Im moving to a smaller house. Would I take this?
Anyhow, it took 2 years but Im pretty much done. Now Im maintaining. I stopped shopping just to shop & I watch what I bring into my home.

So when I went to get boxes/bags for some of them, my mom came along, saw multiple stacks of books, packed *all* of them in a big box and put it in the garage. :I She was so happy to help me! The only way to keep a home clutter free is
    1. Have a place for everything
    2. Have a process to put back everything into that place
    3. Have separate time included in your everyday life/ routine to clean, put away, and keep tidy.
    4. Have a weekly, by weekly, monthly time to do the bigger tasks
    5. Share the jobs within your family evenly
    6. Make it fun- it is not terrible if you’re enjoying it!
    Good luck!
Take time yo sit down with the family to have suggestions for changes- as they all live there!!!
Also one of the biggest issue-
don’t let repairs get out of hands!!!
Only well kept homes can be nicely maintained!!!

I loved your bit on piles. I haven't heard that before from any of the other homemaking pros. My mother was an expert at that. Always little piles here and there to put away later. She wasn't a hoarder. But then, when the housekeeper was coming, things had to be tidied up. My sister recalls her sweeping her little piles willy nilly into the nearest top drawer. Quite funny, looking back at it.
