I just did this trick and took it up a level (well, I believe it got a greater reaction). Got them to do 3 piles. Write down the bottom cards (to remember). Got them to choose a card and did the 'ritual.' Did the next 2 piles. Cool thing is, they could use their 'special' card again or choose something completely different. The end was obviously revealing all 3 of their original cards. Mind blown! Doing the three piles adds sooo much more randomness. Only tip is: get them to deal into 3 piles, not just wing it by cutting roughly a third. Which nicely solves any issues Nick memtioned in his comment. ie you'll always have at least 17 cards in each pile so you wont run out when spelling. And also you'll know that the 3x ritual will work, as you won't have too many cards, even if you're only spelling out a ten letter card. Final extra tip (purely for one more level of randomness) When they've got say 15 or 16 in each pile (45-48 cards dealt) tell them that they can do whatever they want with the remainder. eg discard them. Throw the lot on one pile. Unevenly distribute etc. Just that one extra subtle layer never hurts 😊 This is a great trick! Hope people dont miss it just because it's a short.
If I worked it out correctly, here is how it works: (hope it somewhat clear) In English, all the amount of letters of each of the card names is either 10, 11, 12, 13, 14 or 15. This trick will always work if the packet thickness (p) is less than or equal to the two times the amount of letters of the random card (r). So t
My initial attempts failed but to my total amazement this really works. I actually had one friend take a third of the deck and had another take half of the remaining cards and performed for two spectators at once. You can imagine the reactions. I will forward this video to a professional magician friend who I tried to explain the trick without a deck of cards available. He was really interested despite my miserable explanation. Now, I will have to keep a deck of cards on me just for this trick.
This does (likely) work every time. I just did it 10 times in a row and every time it works, my variation is this… I have the spectator select a random card of their free choice from the discarded 2/3 deck and that’s what we use. It works 100% of the time
One way to ensure that the spelling is done with a packet containing close to a third of the deck is to have your spectator make 3 piles of cards, each containing roughly the same number of cards. Then have them choose any pile and use that one. This also has the advantage of seeming extra fair, or the trick can be repeated with the two remaining piles, either with the same spectator or two other spectators if you are performing for three or more people.
This is good! No slight of hand, so literally anyone can do it. I know a different version that uses 9 cards and works 100% of the time. I won't explain it all but 3 piles of 3 cards, someone chooses a pile, and their selection is the bottom one. The card is spelled out and the person's selected card is always the 5th one from the top.
@@MattMcGurk it's a good beginner to a routine, because at the end, you've got that selected card and you can do anything with it: mix into the deck then force it, double lift, pass - can't do the pass to save my life 😭
It doesn't work all the time. I grabbed a stack and immediately it worked spelling out with queen of diamonds. Tried it again but spelling ace of spades and my card ended up back on the bottom of the stack not the top. It's really gonna depend on how many cards you have in your hand if it'll work or not. So far, ace of spades, ace of hearts, two of spades, two of hearts don't work. Goes back to bottom. Three of diamonds lost it in the middle. I'm trying with 3 different packets made from same deck. 1/3 each.
You got it buddy! As long as you cut close to a third you’re fine. It’s just knowing the sweet spot. It doesn’t have to be exactly 1/3 but just close enough.
Thats crazy matt. I haven tried it yet. Im a disbeliever 😆 seems like the packet in your hand has to contain 20 or less cards . More than 20 and it doesn't work ❤
@MattMcGurk hey I came up with an awesome version. First I want to thank you for all your hard work and sharing this good stuff. Wish there was a way to explain this real short , but might have to make and upload a video. Here's the scenario: deal 2 equal packets. 26 / 26 . Tell spect to choose. - FREE CHOICE- allow them to shuffle. Tell them 7 is a lucky number so pull out any 7 cards into a pile. ( magi does the same so now there's 14 card in a center pile . ) have spect choose any one . Then say OK, I want one too , but I'll let you pick it for me so there's no tomfoolery. They choose your card and each card then goes to the bottom of your 19 card packets. ( remember 26 card's each, minus 7 to the middle ) Tell spect to remember their card . Tell them what your card is on bottom, but don't show them, as this will give them something to think about. Now take their pile and spell out your card by each letter ( you know the drill ) . Tell them, Hey , wouldn't it be amazing if my cars is now over here, - it'd be a miracle since it's over in my pile. Turn card over to show it's not . ( bottom card can also be shown) Say , so now , we just mixed up your card into the center somewhere, didn't we ? - Let's try this again. Repeat- show top and bottom cards afterwards, and then say . Tell you what- What was YOUR card ?? Then , say , maybe we'll have better luck with my cards . Repeat, twice , this time spelling THEIR card with your pile . In a futile attempt say , hey , let's see it'll you have better luck . Have them go back to their pile and count off by spelling , your card for the third time . Without revealing, now have them spell their card with your pack -- And now you're ready for the big turnover !! Both cards are magically produced on top !!.. what do you think?? I luv it .

it didn't work with ace of clubs for me one time

Thanks a lot Matt! Let me say not only in English it works… I tried in Italian and I’ve got success. Wow!!!
Wow that’s awesome!!!! 🤩

I like to spell out the card that we cut to. That makes it fun
Nice way to close the trick 👌🏻
you can also spell the bottom card and it will be on top
Well spotted!

How???! It works but not all the time.
Works everytime, just be sure to cut around 1/3 of the deck and you should be Golden!
