Wet & Windy Day At Llyn Geirionydd: Itiwit Inflatable Kayak & Walk, Snowdonia, North Wales

- It was a rather soggy day so we decided to test out how our kayak acts and feels in less than ideal conditions. We headed off to Llyn (lake) Geirionydd, which is situated in the northeast of Snowdonia National Park, on the edge of the Gwydyr Forest and on the slopes of the Carneddau mountains. Here swimming and kayaking and even powered crafts are permitted. There is a large, free carpark wit toilets at lake but you do need to drive a few miles of tight road to get there, just so you know (LL27 0YX). The whole site is old defunct mining works now managed by Natural Resources Wales.
It was raining pretty hard on and off as we got out of the car and stated the inflation process, to be fair, even with the rain, it was not a difficult or long process, about 4/5 minutes and that's with our mistake of reattaching he values incorrectly last time we had it out, DOH! The shore near the carpark is shingle and gently sloped. There is also buoys to separate us from any potential powered crafts that may come to enjoy the water.
In the water the rain did not affect how we used the kayak or its' behaviour,. However, the wind picked up more and more while we were paddling about. We were constantly pushed by the wind meaning we needed to paddle 3 to 4 times harder and correct or course over and over again. That was ok as we were relatively safe but it did feel a bit unnerving as in a few high gusts it felt as though we did not have proper control of our direction (and made it so hard to actual film anything 😆). We think this is probably something most long-term kayak users get used to. We are so novice and need a lot more time on the water. It was really good fun though, we loved it. We eventually retreated to the car for tea and a minced pie. The kayak does weigh a fair deal more when it gets very wet but it is still doable. By the way, we rinsed the kayak when we got back to our accommodation and removed all he bladders, wiped everything down with a towel and hung everything separately it in a side building, it took 2 full days to dry properly.
We decide to take a walk around the Llyn, it is stunning, even in the driving rain. The 6th century poet Taliesin was reputedly born, and had ties to, the area. A fitting monument has been erected in his honour at the far end of the Llyn. Wich of course, we had to go experience. We also walked around some more of the old mining works that litter this area and even saw he grand Klondyke Mill that processed and smelted vast amounts of ore from many different lead and zinc mines in the area via a dedicated tramway.
We were soaked through by this point so we scuried back the car for more tea and a towelling down. Marvellous day, awesome place! We can highly recommend a visit, perfect for a free family day out in the great outdoors!

I agree.....one can't spend all time outdoors in the mountains. Even when the weather is nice I like to mix it up a bit. I've not considered a kayak as yet though😎. Well done for sticking it out in the rain. We've had a lot of it up here and it's doing my head in a bit.☔ ATB Chris
Aww Chris, yes the rain although essential for lots of reasons, can be soul destroying. It's something Kat has had to get me used to, my mountain brat always wants to get up and bag a trig, I'm so glad to have broken that habit tho, some great low level walks and other fun to be had! Oh I bet that was cold as well, especially with a wet bum😖. I was a YT meet up tomorrow in the Lakes and expecting similar weather to be honest😥. Looks very good exercise, especially against the wind and agree completely 'When in Wales you get wet' it always seems to happen to us and when you are wet 'it is never too early for a mince pie', I love them! Good grief I hate roads like that, fingers crossed and hoping nobody is coming the other way😳. Great memorial, never seen it before but it looked great, loved the history and have to say great on you both for keeping going in awful weather #troppers . Noticed you had broke the 2K barrier, real surprised it has taken so long, well overdue and very well deserved as well - brilliant! I was still with you at the end, felling guilty to be honest, as I am warm and dry but no doubt I will be wet and cold tomorrow for my meet up, cheers Alan

Yes the weather was challenging and there was soggy bottoms all round, the mince pie definitely helped lift spirits, i love them too! We'll have to smash a packet when we get a chance to hike togther one day 🎄 🥧

When I was a boy we called that sort of weather summertime. Loved the risky paddling on the fairly toxic lake and the tales of old Taliesin..I was gripping my seat. Great vid😃👍

No way you can stop the Welsh Vikings of going to the great outdoors if they want to, to enjoy that wonderful tea 🍵 😊 I can imagine this area is so cool, honestly you guys and Alan put Snowdonia on my most wanted list a long time ago, however wind and rain would make even my Swedish @ss think twice if I want to spend that time in a kayak. Sure at least there is not much difference between water and shore and so if I fall in, not a huge shock.
Oh yes! Toilets are my first checkpoint too, do we have toilets? Yeeeees check, already great point up :)

Wow that was an amazing day out guys. Fair play for getting out despite the rain. We like to do the same on vad weather days. Get the old waterproofs on & get out in the countryside. The llyn looked very beautiful even in that rain & it would be a great place for a swim on a hot day. Loved the way Ceri ate the mincepie. I always do the same with a biscuit. Lol. Looks like you are both really enjoying the kayak. We were in Brixham the other day on holiday & we were looking out for Debs & Phil as they live there & guess who came into the Wetherspoons & sat right next to us!! I recognised Debs straight away & we ended up chatting for ages with them. They are a really nice couple & it was the highlight of our holiday meeting two lovely famous CZcamsrs. 😊

I thought you was tying stuff in your boat to look after your teeth. Then it dawned on me it's tea 😂I'm going deaf in my old age. Weather looks a bit grim but bad for a trip out on the kayak. I guess this area would be buzzing with people in better weather. Kat knowing her stuff about the monument even in the bad weather. I usually forget what hill I'm on in that sort of weather.
