Fairy Glen, Swallow Falls Waterfall & Betws-y-Coed Hike: Snowdonia, North Wales

- This was an awesome hike, taking in some really special places and epic scenery. It is a 13 mile circular and about 5 hours, with lots of messing about and tea swilling. We started at a free layby (labeled Ysbyty Estate National Trust) alongside the A5, the closest postcode is LL24 0PN.
From here we very quickly made our way along the busy A5, moving South-East and following the wall. Soon we dipped into the forested gorge and could hear the rushing water of the mighty River Conwy. It had rained very heavily the day and night before so the river was incredibly full, unlike anything we had ever seen. It was furious, and brown with sediment but utterly enchanting, difficult to keep our eyes on the path!
We followed the river and gorge path for a few miles until we reached our first extra special spot, The Fairy Glen/Ffos Anoddun. With a carpark and suggested small donation, this is a real treat. It is essentially a secluded area of the gorge that feels enclosed and a bit other worldly, the best place to spot a fairy we are sure. The paths heading to the glen are in good form and easy to use but the path down to the heart of the glen is rather slippery so be careful, worth it though if you are able, a truly magic place.
We then headed back out and started our journey towards the village of Betws-y-Coed. Here we had a good look at the rather stunning cast iron Waterloo Bridge, built by Thomas Telford in 1815, spanning the extremely full River Conwy and acting like a gateway into the village.
We walked through the quintessentially Northern Welsh village, could be on a chocolate box. A friendly place, appearing to both cater to tourists but also retaining its' history and rural, Welsh heart. We toured its' streets, checking out the rather brilliant miniature railway and railway museum. This is also where we nabbed the unusual key to the 14th century St Michael's Old Church. The oldest building in the village, nestled among Yews and housing a stone effigy of Gruffydd ap Dafydd Goch, it is a real must see. We made our way through the village and over the very Instagram famous, Pont-Y-Pair bridge. Built in 1500s by Hywel Saer Maen, this is a medieval packhorse bride, sitting proudly over the Afon LLugwy and the breathtaking Babbling Cauldron Waterfalls. We followed the riverside path from here, some of this path is very accessible but the further you go the more trip hazards, nothing too bad though and it is worth the walking.
Eventually, after following the Afon Llugwy for a while we headed up the gorge type hill to a small road. We were not road walking for long before we turned back off, into the wooded gorge and towards the mighty Swallow Falls/Rhaeadr Ewynnol. The woodland walking was tremendous here! Streams flowed through the trees and we found ourselves crossing tiny bridges pretty often. We could hear Swallow Falls long before we could see it. A really cool lookout point has been created, it even has a bench, and it is totally free! The falls from that spot were beyond spectacular. The force of the water sent spray droplets all the way over to us, it felt like we were part of it rather than spectators. We spent a good chunk of time drinking tea and gorking at the unusually full waterfall, perfect.
We made our way back to the car pretty much the same way we came. A mind-blowing day of hiking.

Brilliant day for the waterfalls. There really must have been some heavy downpours up the valley the night before. Often wet days can be so memorable as the elements have to be conquered as well as the route itself. The waterside trails looked so dramatic and Swallow Falls really awesome. Great place for a cuppa.

Apologies for the late watch guys, we wanted to wait until we could park our bums and watch this on the telly📺 😊👊. We felt like we had stepped into a Welsh fairytale on this one, there was certainly magic in the air with the rain, mist and sunshine coming through the trees, there could be fairies around every corner! 😊🧚♂️ 🧚♀️ . What a day to visit the waterfalls! No other word for it Ceri, spectacular! We will gladly hand over our 50p😊👍. A river of tea! Could this walk get any better?🤣🫖. The light at that point in the walk was something else, and that was just on camera, it must have been really special to have actually been there🥰. The fish pass was a fun fact, didn't know about that👍. What a gorgeous little church too, next level unlocked indeed 🔑 🗝 🔐 ⛪️. Wow! Swallow falls was incredible! You really did hit it at the perfect time with the mist and sunshine 🌞, just stunning, we can see why this was your fave tea stop ever🫖😊👌. Incredible indeed guys. The fairy glen was like a ranging torrent. One slip and you would have been washed away into Betws-y-Coed! Nice to see a different part of Snowdonia and Kat’s knowledge of fish and spawning is second to none! A good quality waterproof jacket is definitely a good investment. It I only takes one damp, wet and uncomfortable experience to realise that it’s worth saving up for something better. Great to see you both out as always. Have a great weekend guys 🙂👍💚

Fantastic guys. What an amazing raging torrent that was. You both filmed the walk beautifully in very difficult terrain & all that rain didn't help much either. One thing the wet weather does though is make all the vegetation really green which I love. The only places we've visited in this video was Betws y coed & the Swallow falls. The fairy Glen looked incredible with all that water trying to squeeze through the narrow gorge. Excellent video guys. 🙂🙂

Thank goodness the weather can't stop you from showing us this extraordinary natural spectacle with the Swallow Falls Waterfall. On your hike through Fair Glen I had the feeling you are walking through the rainforest on Borneo, so lush the vegetation. The river had a lot of water, is it due to the many rains or is there always so much water?
The train and the church and this whole little town - just wonderful.

I used to use this place as my base to guide people over the mountains. Some stunning walks in the forest too. Almost has a fairytale feel to the village and even though I been there a hundred odd times I always smile when I see the sign. It's a great melting pot for tourists and always a great place to have a pint is the Royal Oak Hotel to discuss with tourists theor adventures

That wet UK weather couldn't put a damper on your day. That confluence area of the 2 rivers joining looked very full. All the rain must be coming to you guys across the pond. Good work on finding the key to the little church, well worth a look around. Glad you both got a break from the rain for a while. I’ve never seen jelly fungi before. Fab walk along the raging river… gorgeous woodland especially the Swallow Falls section. That is one impressive waterfall. 😊❤

I didn't realise how much you need to clean waterproofs for them to work. I only found this out when I started testing for Paramo. But absolutely agree with paying a little bit more just to get something a bit better quality. Also better for the environment if you're not buying new kit all the time. That picnic area is awesome. I miss Finland for their picnic areas.
Our rivers go like this often due to all the peat washing off the land. And that is a whopper of a shroom!
The water that was coming through that gorge, was unreal. Still surprises me how violent water can be!
That bridge was so nicely decorated, how fab! I'm pretty sure there is a MTB trails at Bets Y Coed, so this is now on my list of places to visit 😂

Ceri & Kat, wet has been the watchword the past few weeks💦 though it was good you had some☀ Loved the roaring sound of the river hidden amongst the trees and what a flow when you reached it! Definitely some slip hazards, though good recoveries from Ceri😊 Waterloo Bridge was cool👍 and how fantastic was it to get that key to unlock the church👍 The waterfall was stunning with that volume of water. This looked incredibly wet 😁 but what a nice location and I think that one added to the experience. That river was roaring! Wow 😮 wouldn’t wanna get caught in that. But your expressions were just priceless. 😁 and oops, Ceri mind your step at 10:42 👀 that was a nice looking village and has everything you’ll need. What a lovely day out you had despite our horrid Welsh weather. Had many a nice walk with the buggy down the board walk over the years. Conwy river really was angry wasn't it and swallow falls can look different through every season, particularly nice in the summer when you can see the rocks poking out the foam causing the water to flow in lots of different directions. Loved Fairy Glen and that was indeed one fierce river 🌊 but oh so spectacular. The river of tea 🫖 Good to see Waterloo Bridge from below. Betws-y-Coed is a beautiful place, stayed there a few times in the past. Loved the little Conwy Valley Railway trains 🛤 Love churches too and that was a really quaint little one in which you went inside ⛪ Swallow Falls wow! 👌 Just the sound of the falls are impressive enough. Loved the Autumn colours, which the rain could not spoil, as it really greened everything up. Funny enough, I have just bought a new Rab waterproof jacket after getting soaked to the skin a couple of weeks ago, so I hope it is as reliable was the ones you were both wearing. The river really was in spate and it looked a powerful sight, really flowing fast and such a nice river walk to enjoy it. I have always wanted to visit Betws-y-Coed, only even drove through it before and always packed when we did so did not stop. Loved all the shops and that bakery, please but me down for 3 bits of Rocky Road, two bits for me and one for Mrs Metalman😛. The old church was amazing as was the stone arch you walked through to get to it and what a treat it was to see inside when you got the key, very small inside but very beautiful indeed. The stone bridge over the village Falls was superb, as were the Falls themselves, what an amazing place to film and photograph. I know the rain adds to the waterfalls but shame it came back on your hike but wow Swallow Falls was amazing, so worth the hike, the rain, the lack of tea and a Rocky Road chocolate square (criminal in itself). We really need to go back to Snowdonia one day very soon, cheers Alan

Well you just weren't prepared properly for this walk without your snorkeling gear, LOL. As the hurricane blows outside my window it was fitting to watch you tour this lovely area in the rain. The ending of the video was the culmination of a special walk for sure. Snowdonia looks like a very magical place, thanks so much for sharing.

Wow good day for the falls. It’s slippy enough even when it’s not wet at fairy Glen. Wow, we’ve never seen the water like that either! Wow so many of the rocks were underwater down in the Glen! Love that bridge, we call the garage on that bridge our local, as we always stop there when in that area!! We’ve never been underneath though! That was good to see. Love a bit of Betws! My rab one is now totally worth the cost and keeps me dry on those rainy days. Would like to see a review on gear 😊 sounds good. The water looks very strong, it’s running pretty quick there. Amazing guys, saw this upload before we went for a meal out and there was never a doubt in our mind what we were looking forward to upon our return. Did not disappoint! Wow, those waterproofs, will have to check your descriptions or pick your brains on those, they kept your attitude positive despite the almost constant deluge! loved the free parking, #obvs, loved the not paying for waterfall views. I faltered a bit at the holding of gates for each other and lack of slams but you won me over so many times i lost count! Loved the Captains Star Log, the tea flowing river, the understandable fascination with the bridge and of course lets not get started with that bridge twirl. You guys are awesome. If i cant find it in the deets i’ll be a knocking for that waterproof info, plus we both love your regular long pants, we are both in the market. When it dips below 8C even i’ll want to don them, i took so much flack on CZcams last winter for wearing jeans i need some answers! Epic video and a joy to end our lovely night with. Thank you ❤

When you said Fairy Glen I thought you was on the Isle of Skye. Well the bad weather has a silver lining with the river torrent. Love a good river torrent as long as I'm not in it. When I put my waterproof trousers on the rain usually stops and I spotted blue sky after Kat put hers on. Great looking church and I'd never think of going in or getting the key for that matter. I always just drive thro Betws-y-Coed cos I always think it doesn't look hermit friendly and would be a nightmare for parking. Also not been to the Swallow falls since I was a kid so many, many moons ago. If I did go I'd also go to the free side too cos I know there would not be as many people and I find you usually get a better view. Most people are usually lazy. Thanks for the great tour 👍Paul
Ah Paul! The curse of the waterproofs, we hear you loud and clear, the second you get kitted out, the sun comes out....strip off....you guessed it, rain! 🌧 yea thise fairies get about, Kat has visited the Isle of Skye, very much on my wish list, Bill has painted it for us 🎨 🧚♂️
