Thank you so much for posting this video. It's people like yourself that takes the stress of owning an older vehicle that much easier. Had no clue how to open the rear tailgate. Got the new latch in and from start to finish took 34 minutes to install. Again thanks for posting your video.

All I needed was to see what was behind the door skin, and how to get it off.
You gave info on so much more. Thanks for taking the time and making the effort to put this on CZcams for us!

First, the 2001 Ford Expedition 5.6L Eddie Bauer 4x4 is not the same mechanism as the 2005 Ford Expedition 5.4L Eddie Bauer 4x4. Once you get the water proof dust cover off at the bottom left is small sliding switch that slides upward connected to the lock mechanism, slide it upward and go to the exterior turn the key to unlock the rear hatch door and turn the handle to the left, then it opens. With just two zip ties you can secure the broken cables so they maintain their position cause they move it is just a short cable, the black plastic at the cable end is possibly broken and the other white plastic end above at the other mechanism is possibly broke to. Securing those will all the door hatch to function properly. That is the quick fix, the other fix is to buy a new cable or to use a bicycle cable tightener on the brake handle or other end on the vehicle cable or else buy a set of aluminum cable repair slide on's and your done. Also if you choose to use a stiff wire to secure the cables just drill a ultra small hole on the mechanism to slide the wire thru and twist each end of that wire together and trim off the long pieces, same as a zip tie which eliminates buying a zip tie set.

What year is your Expedition. I have a rear hatch that is a pull type lever (out-side) and it will NOT open when pulled. Also, my lift gate glass motor mechanism is causing a parasidic current draw. I have a 2005 Ford Expedition 5.4L Eddie Bauer 4x4

Mine is an early 2003 EB. They should be close. Mine would not unlock, which also prevented it from opening via outside latch.

wmcknigify I have two issues… First, the weird electric latch release and or motor is a continuous parasitic draw on the last portion of the rear edge door assembly. Secondly, my rear hatch pull lever will not unlock or open the rear hatch at all. The class was still open and close but it's causing a parasitic draw. Two separate issues. I'm hoping your video will help me because the entire assembly is $167 from Auto zone. What I need help with this disconnecting power to the motor until I figure out how much the part is going to be replaced as well because we just got her brakes done and need to save a little bit of cash to buy these new parts. Any idea on the best way to remove that mower or is there a plugged unplugged the motor for the glass portion of the gate?

I'm sure there are electrical plugs into the motor that you can disconnect. What I don't know is, if that's disconnected will you some type of warning from the computer. Hopefully not, but once you get the door panel off, you'll be able to see everything.

@@FRIENDSofCAP the draw is from a locked up rear wiper most of the time. Not sure if you ever fixed it or not but just in case someone else has same issue.
