Van Halen - Jump [80s Power Pop Cover]

- It took 38 years, but I finally found the proper way to do my take on one of the most iconic rock (and slightly "synthy") rock songs of all time. How could I ever improve on something that's already perfect? I hope I have at least been able to add a little extra beef here and there, basing it on Rick Beato's detailed insights on "What makes this song great" episode where he dissected Jump by Van Halen a couple of years ago.
Using those snippets he provided as well as what I believe is a recording from one of the singles back in the 80s with the a cappella vocals from the original, I set out to reconstruct my own take on this song, with some beefy synth bass, drums and keys to boot. The hardest task was to time-align the original song with the isolated vocals which also drifted from each other (I'm assuming tape/turntable drift somewhere in the loop back then) and then trying to mesh that with my more four on the floor grid approach (Sorry, Rick! ;)). I did end up doing a slight tempo variation throughout the song though to match the feel of the original session we all know and love.
I used a lot of layers to fatten things up, so there's a lot of Yamaha electric bass from Motif-Rack, Parker from reFX Nexus4, four layers of synth brass from Oberheim Matrix1000 (I don't own an OB-Xa/OB-8), Yamaha XS7, Ensoniq SD-1 and Roland JD-800. I've used some synth guitars and other sounds for the background guitar parts, but ended up using the original guitar solo from Eddie - it was impossible for me to translate it into something useable on my synths.
Hopefully I've managed to show this song some honor.

"Yes."
All of it! ^_^
@@AndersEngerJensen yes lol
This is probably what the record company actually WANTED Van Halen to do with 'Jump'... I love it!
It takes courage to tweak such a classic song. I'm glad you had the courage - you put your own silky synth touch onto this song in a way that gives it a different feel without changing what a generation loves about the song. Bravo!
Thanks! Yeah, that was my biggest concern. How could I add to this without diminishing it and keeping it true to the original.
The idea actually came from Armin Van Buren’s remix a few years ago… and sorry to say, that was a sad affair in my opinion. The mix is actually distorting and I can’t stand the EDMification of these songs. 🙈🤷🏼♂️🤪 So I had to do my «beef up thing».
I still can’t believe he’s gone, but their music will last forever… I’m so glad Eddie’s kid Wolfgang is carrying on the legacy 🤘🏻🎸
Indeed! It was sad to hear the news. Felt I should use this opportunity to pay homage to him and the rest. Wolfgang is a wonderkid and glad he can carry the baton further. Hope he can digitize all those tapes Eddie left in his studio. Hours upon hours of unreleased stuff and ideas that would be great to share with the public. 😊
Instant goosebumps.
I was only born in the late 90s. Only in the last few years have I started to listen to and like music from the 80s and 90s from time to time.
I hope Content Match doesn't strike this down, because it's an amazing cover. Great job isolating and dubbing the vocals & guitar! That had to be a project in itself.
Thanks! 😊 I won’t be taken down, I did a test before uploading. They allow it but take the revenue (no monetizing for me), but that was to be expected since I made it so identical to the original and used their vocals and guitars.
The isolated vocals come from an early recording I found online many years ago and the guitar solo from Rick’s multitrack recording he possesses. So the work was mostly time aligning and figuring out how to play the parts I didn’t have isolated and keeping the vibe and energy of the original. 🤓😁
@@AndersEngerJensen Cool! Hopefully one day CZcams figures out fair use. I'd love to see more covers like this.
@@McTroyd I don't think that YT is the culprit here, it's the copyright holders and their lawyers who need to understand fair use. My guess is they won't.
@@AndersEngerJensen So you uploaded it regardless of the monetisaton status? That's quite uncommon ! Many youtubers, even musicians are counting on their monetisation, but the simple fact you did this amazes me.
It was awesome, as if they just had another concert during this time.
Video: 0:33
Me: liked the video immediately
I think Eddie would looking down and smiling at this. It's terrific 👍
80년대는 모든 세상의 위에서 군림할것이다!!
This is awesome, you played the keyboard so perfect, so many people don’t 👍👍
Thanks! Spent a couple of weeks diving into the details as best I could, and thanks to Rick Beato for sharing those snippets a couple of years ago, I could hear what went on behind the guitar solo. So prog and difficult odd keyboard line too! 🙈😂
@@AndersEngerJensen you did it perfectly imo
I seen the Rick Beato video about Jump, I always loved jump, but Rick made me love it on whole new level
Great Cover
Absolutely fantastic! The 80s were an amazing time for music!
MY DUDE!!!!
Great cover!! Would love to hear Dreams by Van Halen!
One of the most iconic synth lines of all time I would say. Nicely done cover! RIP Eddie.
Just finished jumping to the infectious beat and sounds in the lounge room.
Stairway for synth nerds!
Haha right?! 😂❤ (and we would be kicked out just as bad! 🙈)
Hells bells, this is 🔥🔥🔥
You and Palo of Synthmania need to get togeather and do an album or at least colab on a song or two.
Love it Anders. Love it!
The force is strong in this one.
Hell of an intro, smashed it out of the park again.
I think there are 1 million Jump videos, but yours is my favourite👍Awesome Intro and great video editing...i've seen VanHalen as opening Act for Black Sabbath long time ago and people & Ozzy Osbourne were blown away from VanHalens performance....great Memories...🎸
Haha, thanks! Glad to hear that! It was daunting to even begin on this project - it had to be good enough with all "eyes watching". I bet that concert was epic indeed. Never got to see them live - I was too young to go alone in 1993 here in Norway (also, I would have wanted the DLR experience even though Sammy is a good vocalist, VH has always been Le Roth for me).
@@AndersEngerJensen hi thanks...my first VanHalen Concert was Offenbach near Frankfurt🇩🇪 Great video & Synthmix with David Lee Roth Vocal Stem on top....i explored your great channel via the Alex Ball Korg History Video...subbed👍cheers from Frankfurt🇩🇪
I love this song and together with this video and you keyboard performance --> beautiful. THANX
Amazing! That was fun to hear and watch. Much respect.
I think this will still be the best cover 5 years after this.
Excellent!
You make the best music
Always amzing..Anders I want Your skills and your keyboards ... mostly skills.. love from your fellow norwegian nerd
Masterful! Well done Anders!
Wow, that is a great cover for a great song!
Just had a flashback to checking out the random music equipment in my high school friend’s basement in the 80s. His brother played in a band and he was trying to get one started himself. I saw a Mini Moog and was like “whoa!!” but my friend just said “you don’t want to play that it goes out of tune” and proceeded to start playing Jump on his brother’s Roland. 😂 🎹
Wow, this was awesome! I was dancing in my chair the whole time!
This is one of my favorite songs and you certainly did it justice. I'll be listening to this for years to come.
Awesome version and great video!!!
As a long time Van Halen and Jump fan I am pretty impressed with this! It rocked! One complaint though… Alex’s drums missing was a BIG miss.
Thanks, glad you liked it. 😃 I couldn’t use the original drums, firstly because I don’t have them and secondly because the idea was to re-imagine it in a synth pop landscape using samples and what I had available. :)
Very elegant remix. Pays a perfect homage to the original. Thank you so much Anders. 👍
This is absolutely a great rendition of the song. Thanks!
That's an incredible studio. Love the music too.
Glad you like it!😊
You took it to a whole new level and it is awesome.
This is going into rotation on my car ride music list now. Good job!
One of my favorite songs with my favorite synth youtube channel. That's a solid 13 out of 10 😄
This. Is. FANTASTIC!
Great sound and performance! Well done!
Yes Anders! Absolutely tremendous! ❤️❤️❤️❤️
Now this is some delicious music.
Well done.
the intro is epic. what a crescendo
😄Thanks! That was the intention. 🤘🏼
Another outstanding composition Anders! 🚀
You most definitely did it justice! And then some. :)
Loved it! Great stuff Anders!
This is amazing!
Amazing cover, great work!
Amazing work. Well done :)
Yeah that really nails it! You layered for the lead sound JD-800 with JX-3P? Sounds great. While ago I tried to create the sound on each one of my synths (find the video on my channel "Van Halen's Jump intro played on 13 synthesizers [Synthfluencer]")
Thanks! 😅 Actually, the JX-3P and TS-10 are only for visual flair. The synth brass sound is a mixture of Matrix-1000, JD-800, XS7 (several variations) and reFX Nexus4. :)
Awesome my man! :)
Sounds great, nice job!
I love this ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
You nailed it :) amazing... definitely even improved ! :)
Great song and great cover 👍
Fantastic! The first riff I played when I got my first synth ❤
Thanks! Yeah, I think we all did that.. 😂
What a performance! Also love your studio setup. Would love a video breaking down what you use in terms of hardware and software! Again, kudos!
Well, you might as well...
😜
lie down? 🥸🤪
Other teenagers in the early 90s interested in girls, smoking, and getting upto no good. Me drooling over the synths in sound on sound magazine and seeing that jd-800 was just porn to me. (that and s3000 akai samplers). Closest I got to a Roland as school was a JV-30 that the music teacher got the school to get as I was into sequencing on my 520st and Casio CT-680 and Yamaha PSS-51. And yes that Roland did go home with me a few times too 🙂
Gracious, that must have taken some serious work and effort!
Thanks! Yeah, been a long three weeks after I took the project up from the basement. Started in 2016, but it halted. Had to marinate a little and be ready for it I guess. ;)
I like... already liked van halen but this reimagined one or whatever is great.
Man this is awesome. Say do you go to any of the retro conventions in the us ?
Hehe thanks. Sadly no, after the pandemic and all the other crap lately, both time and expenses have gone down and way up respectively. Maybe in the future and combining with a trip to David. :)
@@AndersEngerJensen awesome man I know the classic game fest in Texas is big and David the 8 bit guy was there.
@@AndersEngerJensen also is there a website for buying a album ? My son loves crystal starlight he falls to sleep with it. (He is 14 months old lol.) But when he isn't tired he loves it still.
Absolutely great but still I would have found it cool to have a keytar solo instead of the original guitar. Maybe ask Glenn Main?
Haha, well yeah. He could maybe have done that, but I’ve been down with the flu this week and I just felt it was really hard to do something worth doing on synth… the guitar solo is epic and there is after all a keyboard solo right after. ;)
@@AndersEngerJensen that's understandable. Still very good and you always have your distinctive sound. Hope you are well again.
Could you cover Panama in this same style? This is so amazing
Wish I could, but that’s a pure guitar song.. and hard to pull off with synths. I’m not sure I could give it the treatment it deserves. :)
@@AndersEngerJensen I have a hunch you could pull it off with ease!
Now do a Huey Lewis and the news cover, please!
Is that a real monitor?
BTW awesome soundtrack!
Van Halen rocks!!!
Yeah. I edited the intro clip from various news videos and concerts etc, with music and effects… then exported that with the actual original music video from VH and time aligned it to my cover. Then played that on the LCD monitor in real time from my DAW when recording the footage. All real, no superimposing in post (you can see all the reflections etc).
That's so cool. You are the best music creator of all time.
Whats the toms that you are using? Vsds-x? ☺️ Nice cover 👍
Sound or visual? The pad is Roland Pad-8 from the 80s, the actual tom sounds are samples from Zenhiser 80s Retro Drummer sample pack. :)
@@AndersEngerJensen thanks!
Eddie Van Halen was a legend but Jump isnt Jump without David Lee Roth .Epic version Anders :-)
Right?! I do like some Sammy stuff, but I have to be leaning towards David’s version of Van Halen anyday. 🤘🏼 Thanks! Glad you liked it! 🤓
Ok so which one was it? JD, TS or JX? 😉 sounds exactly like an OB.. 😉 Excellent job btw.
Well the whole debate of what synth Eddie used is a jungle of headache. Some say OB-8, some OB-Xa, some even say Kurzweil K250 and a lesser known fact is that Roland JX-3P was used on the track «1984» so who really knows. Some also states that Eddie lied during the interviews… can we trust Keyboard Magazine interviews if that’s true? I have no idea.
But here, I used reFX Nexus4 expansion, Yamaha XS7, Oberheim Matrix1000 and Ensoniq SD-1 to layer what I felt was a fat and suitable Jump-brass sound. :)
The JD, JX and TS-10 are merely for visuals as the others were placed awkwardly in terms of visual arrangement in my studio. The cake is a lie. 😂
@@AndersEngerJensen I have heard he used an OB-xa on the recordings because that's what the studio had and he toured with an OB-8. 🤔
Anders, if I may make a suggestion: Do this with I Want To Break Free by Queen! There is a vocals-only cut that you can use as well.
czcams.com/video/IJRLDOVNGSI/video.html
April Fools Day suggestion: Synth up the Rickroll song!
It has crossed my mind… but it’s already kinda perfect… also gotta watch how much copyrighted material I put up here too. Never know how the rights holders react before I put up my version. I could be doing a couple of weeks worth of hard work only to find out that the video is blocked altogether. That would suck. (I’m fine with de-monetized, but getting blocked and potential strikes is the worst). :)
@@AndersEngerJensen Yea, suck it would, A real shame. Although, I wonder how others get away with their own versions. 331Erock does heavy metal covers of many songs, including NGGYU.
Man you are bron in the wrong era.
Well, to be honest, I was born in 1977 so I’d say I hit the sweetspot more or less. Got the best part of the 80s and early 90s. 😄
