How The Craft is an Allegory for the Spiritual Journey: Film Analysis

The Craft, to me, is almost the perfect allegory for the spiritual journey as I have come to know and experience it. This is one of my top, if not my number one favorite film of all time and I've always wanted to do a series of videos about it so this is the first of many to come!

I always saw Chris attacking Sarah as a warning against casting love spells and why they don't work. You can't bend another's will. Love spells don't make someone fall in love, they create obsession. Chris was basically drugged with magick so he became an addict. The longer he couldn't have access to Sarah the more intense his obsession became. Just to share my perspective at least. Amd omg thank you I am really enjoying this break down on a fav witchy movie. 🙏💜

The bookstore scene, the first one, was so key-Because it exhibited the ethical split between Sarah and her new friends-The girls steal spell books, Sarah buys her book-The store owner, who kind of takes the role of a spiritual guide/distant mother figure-Remarks on this.
Good foreshadowing for how things would eventually go. Because even before the other girls turned drunk on power evil-Even in their meek state, their character flaws were brought forth.
If you want to see who someone is-Give them power.
This was a nice commentary analysis. I 100% got that vibe of the girls not being healthy friends when they first invited her to shop with them, since Sarah just seemed so uncomfortable most of the time and just went along with it because she was insecure and had no other friends. Typical highschool friendships, especially with the whole "girls being passive-aggressive" . Glad to have grown out of that.
In the original script, what lies beyond the curtain at the candle shop is not a temple but a secret garden with an old and wise crone, Laurel’s grandmother, who is so old she is blind and only guided by her intuition. She tells Sarah that nobody can use magick against her if she won’t allow them to, and that she needs to take back her power. When Sarah confronts the rest of the girls at the end, she doesn’t call Manon but instead take back the power she had shared with the girls, and pours it into herself, casting a glamour that confuses the girls and leads to them falling off a window, resulting on Nancy breaking her neck and dying. In the end Sarah’s power has grown stronger and she is using her glamour to read little kids stories at the library and make them see visions instead of just them imagining as she reads.

Wow, this was really interesting. Wasn't sure if I was going to watch the whole thing, but I found your analysis really engaging. Especially, the astrological elements embodied in the characters. Keep up the good work!
I like your analysis of this film. It's one of my favorite movies of all time. I've always seen it as a female counter part to Lost Boys. And although I'm a guy I've always preferred the craft.
I always interpreted both movies as allegory for drug use brought about by falling into the wrong peer group. Vampirism and witchcraft are interchangeable with intravenous substance abuse.
The other 3 girls ( Mostly Nancy) were very jealous of Sarahs born talent. Sarah never realized she had any witch powers, and the others realized it right away how effortless and naturally powerful she was. Nancy hated that! Jealousy of Sarahs Grounded elemental wicca powers threatened to blow out Nancys fire spirit.
Yesss 100%!. I really feel like I could relate to that IRL- underestimating my own skills and abilities and not understanding why others were nasty towards me, now realizing that it's because they saw it before I did!
The soundtrack for this film was epic-Maybe it’s because I was a 90s teen, but this movie resonates hard with me. It’s a movie that’s locked a moment in time for me, the world felt endless then, timeless-And The Craft was one of those movies that stuck. I can remember it like yesterday, and become who I was back then.
This video was so good I was curious where you were going to go with the self realization and I think your analysis of it was very tight and intriguing!! It especially made me find myself in Sarah as a character more than I felt after watching the film! Hehe loved this can’t wait for more videos 💘

Dude! Before the step dad died, Nancy was in her room with a red wax doll which is used in love spells!! What you saying about her possibly doing something to enhance the original "enchantment" hold water

Nancy was in love with Sarah maybe. Nancy was emotionally unhealthy and she wanted badly to keep Sarah. All the longing glances from her to Sarah, Nancy's overwhelming sense of betrayal at Sarah and Nancy's obsession with keeping Sarah even if she has to kill her. Like a toxic "if I can't have her, no one will" attitude of a dangerous person who has been rejected. It's sublimated, Nancy's attraction to Sarah, but possibly a facet of the film.

@@JaaraGold That would be rad! Definitely let me know if you make a new Craft video! I feel like Nancy is bi & aware of the attraction; Sarah is straight & sheltered so might not be aware. Nancy is the only poor kid in a posh private school where kids project bullshit onto her & this made her more aware of nuance than Sarah. Sarah is better at magick without trying & she had everything to begin with that Nancy didn't have: a good family, a stable home, a nice house, love from people, money for college & the future. Top it off with Nancy being secretly attracted to Sarah. Once Sarah rejects Nancy, it hurts Nancy both romantically & cosmically.
