Why You Don't Hear About This Craft Star Anymore

  • She started acting as a child star in the '80s with fantasy films like "Return to Oz" and "The Worst Witch," and she continued her success into the '90s with the cult classic high school film "The Craft" and the hard-hitting drama "American History X," but Fairuza Balk hasn’t been showing up in as many popular movies in recent years. Balk has continued to act, including a turn on the acclaimed drama "Ray Donovan," but she has also spent her time pursuing her interests in art and music. Let’s take a look at what Fairuza Balk has been up to recently, even if you haven’t heard about her as much as you once did.

The reason we don’t “hear” from Fairuza Balk anymore is because she’s not a tabloid celebrity. She has more respect for herself. She’s also not acting to be a high status glamour girl, she works hard to make art and take roles that are difficult, challenging, or controversial.

The goth style has been seen all over the runways of every highly respected designer in the past four years or so, the look itself has evolved, the fact that all the shirts I used to wear in junior high of goth bands now cost over a hundred on Ebay, all the witchy makeup brands, the resurgence in all things spooky has made a lot of people very rich. You can even go on a site like forever 21 and find gothy clothes. As for Fairuza she has been a practicing witch years before The Craft was made, her career didn't die she chose to stop accepting roles just for money, she's very happy taking on roles she feels a connection to but she isn't desperate for fame and money.

I'm not saying that everyone likes them but for most of us, we find them fun, for many it has opened them up to their path or simply makes people curious so they do research and are a little more open to us :)

I LOVE Return to Oz, always have. She was great at portraying Dorothy as Frank Baum wrote the character in the books, and the movie is just one of those rare gems that makes you go, "wait....DISNEY did that????"
Actors aren't the only things that can be typecast. Studios can be too. Disney is incredibly successful, but also penned themselves into a corner. People see the Disney name and think, "Animation! Family Friendly! etc." That's why anything outside that narrow band has historically done poorly (well, at least initially, as they generally later become cult classics) in the box office. Think: The Black Hole, Tron, Return to Oz, The Black Cauldron. There's a reason that The Nightmare Before Christmas, Who Framed Roger Rabbit, etc was not released under the Disney name even though they have since become equated with Disney. There's a reason Disney has/had Touchstone Pictures, Hollywood Pictures(1989-2007), and Miramax (from 1993-2010).

Trey Stephens Christians continue to use occult symbolism today. The pentagram was even used by early Christians, as a symbol of the five wounds of Christ. In "The Craft", the teen witches go to a Catholic School and the Virgin Mary is prominently featured in the magic shop they frequent, as a representation of the Divine Feminine aspect of God.

Not reading the comments.. I love Fairuza Balk. She's at least ten years older than me but in my prime, her prime, I looked upped to Fairuza. She was this super cool gothic/emo chick slash upcoming actress. As well as this very pretty, pale (love), and amiable inspiration too. I think she got type-casted, simple as that. It happens, to pretty girls and to hardcore guys. I would talk to her today if I saw her on the streets, I would befriend her, and more importantly, I would ask her and treasure her stories on the experience she's gone through. I mean I remember watching American Perfekt on cable, cable I had for free that month through my parents. I was one of the few 17 year olds who watched American History X in theaters when it came out. I recognized her immediately in that small performance, and still loved it. I love her. I'll never forget Fairuza's name for as long as I shall live. As for her role of Nancy Downs.. just great. Unrewarding, un-nominated.. but a cult icon, for generations far past my own. Fairuza has that name and charisma of the late '80s to late '00s. Cheers Fairuza!!! ;)

When it comes to type casting her I very much agree with her that the film Industry has done that to her I feel everyone should have the opportunity to explore different aspects of acting I think she would equally do you good in a drama film if Hollywood would just give her the chance to do so.
