People hear what they want to hear and think that they have a good grasp on ammo. Fact is, every gun likes different pellets/slugs as you said. Only real world practice and testing will show you what round will fit for your particular gun. I think advertising does more harm then good sometimes.
Good information.
The only thing I would add is a pellet is more like a badminton and slugs need gyroscopic stabilization
Its a shuttlecock! . Badminton is the game. Thats a word I don't get to use very often...shuttlecock lol.
@@briant6669in the voice of Beavis and ButtHead, hehe, shuttlecock!
Rate of twist is huge in shooting slugs but it is never talked about. Also types of rifling and the softness of lead plays a huge part of how a slug will shoot . Length of slugs and the shape of the back of the slugs has a huge effect on how a slug will shoot at different power guns. Its a huge experiment that will fill your closet with different diameter, different length, different hardness, different speed, different rifling, different slug shapes both nose and the back of the slug and so on. It takes a effort to figure it out. But once you do. Its a different game.
Actually, rate of twist, type of rifling, AND style of choke is all talked about when it comes to slugs by Matt Dubber!
Agreed I have a whole box of all different size slugs most of them my guns don't like LOL
@@bertbccfu9564 I have a feeling soft lead might be the direction to go
Great information!! It’s good to see a review from someone that’s not getting paid to hype up one brand over another!
Moose, I thought you were wearing a viking hat at first! Good information!! Cool pellet tray idea!
This is exactly what we have said from the start 2018. Very well presented video. 👏👏
I tested 10, 15 & 21 grain .177 slugs today.
Amazing accuracy. I'll hunt with a hollowpoint slug over a pellet every time if it groups..and use pellets for plinking.
Look at it this way, you'll use less slugs if they are more accurate and more lethal.
Accurate slugs are worth every penny.
Critters hate me....
I’m new to airguns and I’m trying to learn as much ad I possibly can and although a lot of this stuff is over my head at this point I still like your videos. Being a native of Minnesota and having went to college at University of Wisconsin I especially liked the VIKING look of this video. Brilliant…
Moose I cast my own, I just got done casting up a bunch of NOE 218-25-RF with the cup point. I'll be using these 24.5 grain slugs in my .22 Challenger, they deliver 70fpe from that gun and are very accurate just how they drop from the mold, in order to shoot these slugs from my Liberty I need to resize them to .215 and they're also very accurate, well I got to get back to sorting these slugs by weight.
A very healthy point of view here Moose! my experience is that there is no slug vs pellet or no X better than Y. its all about what application one use it for and if the barrel likes to eat it enough to get the desired result, aiming more to hunting than target competition here. great video thanks 👍🔫🇸🇪
Totally agree, i remember getting absolutely slated by a naive big gun shop owner in the states as he disagreed with me when I said "there's no such thing as Slugs are better than pellets or pellets are better than slugs" they all have there place & in that application one is more suitable. But no, him & his thick buddies claimed Slugs were better. So typical of these so called influencers
It's been over 3 years now since I bought any airgun ammo and the last that I bought were .177 simply because I haven't found any good molds for .177. I've never even shot a hybrid because long before they came out I was casting my own anyway and I only hunt with them so I don't normally shoot more than 50 yards anyway. I'm also a Michgander myself !!!
All of my airgun ammo is made from 4BHN pure Rotometals lead.
My Uragan King 25 LOVES slugs. And ironically it loves the cheap H&N 31gr Grizzlies.
I've also found that the cup base slugs shoot better, which could have to do with the choked barrel.. and also the Nielsen .249 slugs are more consistent than the .250. The weight sweet spot seems to be about 30 to 34
Love my Uragan 30.
She like NSA 47GR
In my AEA Hp Varmint
.25 I have been using the Nielsen .249 26 grain hollow points and I had tested a lot of different slugs and none of them would group , I am super happy with these Nielsen just as accurate as the JSB exact 26 grain pellets I have been using,
I've also use them for Pest Control and man it sounded like I hit those woodchucks with a softball One-Shot knockout,
Yeah I thought so too but gave H&N 218 21 grain a shot, 32ft/lbs FX Crown mk2, put 5 shots through the same hole multiple times, and downrange power retention is excellent, I know what I'll use for hunting, 500mm pellet liner.
You are 100% correct, just because 1 gun shoots a given pellet well DOESN'T mean that yours will.
EVERY gun is a gun unto itself, and the only way that you can find out is to try them in your gun.
Yes sir!
I like 33 gr. NSA slugs in my FX .25 MKII impact at 976 fps.
"airgun infomercials.... " perfect description!
I got an AEA Hp Varmint .25 , I have upgraded it with a Huma regulator and switched to a carbon fiber 500 cc bottle , So now I can fill to 4500 and have a shot count of about 80 shots till I fall off reg, I tried all kinds of slugs including the hybrids and all diffrent weights and sizes , None of them would hold a group, With pellets I use jsb exact jumbo Diablo the 26 grain and the 33 grain both will shoot practically 1 hole groups @50 yards , I was disappointed that the gun wouldn't shoot slugs until I ended up trying the Nielsen .249 26 grain hollow points , these ended up shooting better than the pellets if I do my job right I can get 1" groups at 100 yards and I'm super happy with that, I've also used them for Pest Control already and it's a One-Shot knockout punch on woodchucks,
So far I have only shot pellets I am going to try to experiment with slugs this summer your video had some great information to get me started thanks moose
I've been spending lots of money on all the fancy new expensive slugs and the best option I found was h&n slug HP. I accidentally ordered the new slug HP II, and they are even better, they're like laser beams. And they're the cheapest option.
I had to return to this video because he speaks the truth about the fact that barrel type is important. I wouldn't doubt the leading videos on how fx guns are so accurate that they probably no using the barrels we get when we buy the gun. If I'm wrong, my apologies. I didn't get the tight groups I wanted till I I got tired and said fck it and bought a L.W. and TJ barrel. Now it doesn't matter what slug or pellet I shoot, I'm still getting tight groups. Now, keep in mind I do use soft lead for land and groove seal. Like he said, it's not too tight, though. That, too, will cause inaccuracies.
As a machinist, we are allowed a tolerance to facilitate high speed machining. If there was no dimensional tolerancing, we would be hard pressed to make that part.
I always used NSA slugs with great accuracy in my mk2 slug A .25 cal. Testing knockouts in close weight right now. We will see.
Moose, great video. I shoot the howler out of my 177 maverick at 1050fps and so far getting great results. It does take time to get your gun to shoot something very accurately. What fun would it be if everything just worked. Tinkering is most of the fun anyways!!!
@Gainstrup
I have my reg set at 130bar. You will need to order the 25/30 cal hammer weight to get your speed up. With the stock hammer anything above 100bar on the reg you start losing speed. The stock 177 maverick seems to be set up for 10gr pellets.
That's my thing to part of the fun is tinkering and setting it up and the challenge of getting everything to work together properly
The variability of ammunition has and will always be present, however we now have been given better platforms to equalise this and allow a gun to shoot a wider array of projectiles. Over the last few years we've seen a quantum leap in the technology of PCP's. Regulators, dual regulators, hammer spring adjustment, barrel forging, etc etc. have all been implemented to allow our guns such as the Impacts of this world to become ever more versatile and LESS picky when it comes to ammo choice.
Excellent video commentary 👌
Thank you kindly
Greetings from upstate NY. You make great sense all about --- if more people listened to your advice, they would be better shooters almost immediately; mayhap not world-class marksmen/women, but they would experience better results for their efforts. Excellence takes time, effort, money, and dedication. Having said that, there is still ample room for the occasional shooter/plinker in the sport. Best to you Moose. I love the vids. Stay well.
I appreciate that!
Ya that is the fun of airguns to tune and play... I have a lot of different pillets &slugs. Few different air guns...bang..bang
For sure 😀
I have a wildcat bt compact. I have been playing around with 217 and 218 in different grains.
I've found that Neilson slugs with the cup tails shoot the best out of all of my airguns hands down⭐⭐⭐⭐ The dumbest thing that I've found is that many people think that the more you pay for slugs and airguns make them shoot better😂 Sadly i fell for the hype and purchased an FX Impact M3 THINKING that it was the baddest airgun in existence because of all the hype and price, just to realize that i would have to shell out an additional $400 on a whole different barrel to shoot slugs accurately and That really pissed me off because it shot slugs like💩😡 I refuse to try and join the "Look at me" group and continue to dump dumb amounts of money into an airgun that's has a dumb price to begin with just to get it to shoot slugs accurately. Now i understand why the most expensive airguns shoot so low fps because the slower something travels, the easier it is to control it's trajectory, so those guns are made to shoot slow at paper targets and not real world woods activities👍 Nice logical presentation Sir👍👍👍
My NSA 240 grains shot out of aea 50 caliber Challenger .. has never let me down accurate affordable and leave a hell of a blood trail not like some of the other slugs I've used with no blood trail... looking into Lehigh copper fracturing rounds in sobots will try soon.
@@lindseyzacek5211I love the AEA guns, I have two of them so far the HP varmint in 25 caliber and I also have the Challenger Bullpup in 25 caliber , I love my HP for its Tactical looks and its accuracy but that Challenger is a beast very accurate and a monster Powerhouse,
Couple guys that I shoot with have the very high-end guns and most of the time I can out shoot them with my HP that cost less than a quarter of what they paid for their guns,
a guy at my range is using slugs in his FX it has a lined barrel with a higher twist rate , he says they are really accurate , he was doing very tight groups at 50yds with a sub 12ft/lb (UK) rifle
Nice
As always entertaining and educational.looking forward to what you bring next.
NSA fit my .357 challenger and I buy the 93 grain cause they fit my mag. I like how good they shoot at higher speeds with these AEA platform
I agree
Fantastic video👍 thank you
Glad you enjoyed it
Good information Moose! I’m in the process of figuring out what slug my Advenger 22 likes. It’s a long process especially for a newbie. So far it’s liking the NSA .2165 17.5 gr. and the H&N .217 21gr. I still have a lot of testing and tuning to figure out what it’s going to like the best.
The "tester packs" or multipacks are a good option and I've seen some for slugs. Going to order some for testing.
I'm using some on the .218, with 21 grains at 950 fps and 23 grains at 902 fps...
Can .217 get more?
Mine is with a plenum of 4.5 cc more and 4.5mm in the transfer of the barrel.
Low power air rifle so don’t waste you money on slugs
Might you try the JSB Monster Redesigned pellets? They seem to do very well for a fiend of mine. Unless you wish to try the more expensive slugs from H&N at about 880 FPS. The Avenger will shoot well up to 75 yards at max or medium settings - see chart by AEAC in video. My take: Remain faithful to whatever missiles your weapon shoots well - Moose is so correct with this same piece of advice. Best of all fortunes to you.
Average definitely has enough power for slugs
Accuracy is important… but for me, it’s not the only reason… you may want super expansion, or deep penetration you get with a harder solid… or maybe you want that extra retained velocity that you get with a slug…. Personally, I like the rapid energy dump
You get with the 25 cal hybrids that keeps over penetration to a minimum or deep penetration with the heavy NSA for body shot woodchucks…
Great post Neil, thanks buddy
I apologize. I'm a follower. (of your channel on CZcams!). 😄
Lol, that made me chuckle
My RTI Prophet Performance has a long twist rate barrel .It is very accurate in shooting high speed pellets ,but it never loves shooting slugs 😂
I find it true with 22lr, I get tighter groups with certain brands of ammo 👍
Hi sir you are right with the 177 slugs
So, your honest opinion is not to listen to the hype. But to buy all of them.. fine plan
Obviously, you may have missed the point. Rewatch the video, and if you have questions, feel free to ask.
The consensus now is that slugs are more accurate past 75 yards especially if there’s a breeze and the slugs, hold more energy when hitting a target. Many of the FX gun pros are exclusively, shooting slugs now.
I can’t seem to find any kind of test showing exactly how much energy a slug will produce compared to a pellet at 50 yards or 75 yards. Is it 25% more energy is it 50% more energy? Have you done any test on this? If not would you consider doing any? Basically, it would have to be done using plywood, ballistics gel, and possibly a hog skull to see the penetration compared to a pellet.
It can be done with a lab radar, it will give the same results
I have use NSA 25 cal 33.5 gr on me Aea challenger bullpup, they work amazing all going in your tuning like you say,you need to test the slugs, test and set your rifle for them
What’s fps for them my friend ?
Very excellent information and presentation Moose.
Thank you very much for this video. 👍
My pleasure!
Haha! With that hat and that poster, behind... you look like a viking!
This is where slugs and pellets have a lot in common you have to find the right one for the gun ask anybody that owns a Benjamin Marauder most of those only like jsb .yes tuning is an absolute for pellets and slugs to get accuracy NSA no longer has 25 Cal sample pack I just checked as of June 2024
I sure wish they still made them
Many airgun shooter thinks that they choosing the ammo. But it's more like in Harry Potter where the wand chooses the wizard. The barrel chooses your ammo not the other way around.
Facts
This is the same as a reloader using all sorts of variations to see what shoots in their gun best.
During the first year of the American civil war, black powder rifles were useless beyond fifty yards accurate wise. The North was the first to purchase rifled barrel black powder rifles. This gave the union army a huge advantage over the South because a rifled barrel increased the accuracy beyond 100 yards. Rifling and ratios are the biggest factors in flight and accuracy for a round ball. Once you change the shape of the ballistic projectile, aerodynamics and bullet design become attributing factors along with rifle ratio of the barrel.
Fine the ammo that shoots the best out of your gun! 💯🇺🇸💪
Slugs ate still in their infency for airguns.
I have purchased an FX impact mk3. Which I will be shooting patriot javelins with.
I also purchased some non hollow point slugs with slightly different diameter.
I'm quite curious to see how it will all perform.
Good informative video though :)
Rather a naive comment i would say. You can say whatever you like about which projectile you hope to use, but if your liner & tune doesn't like them, as in sub MOA 100yds, then you'll need to look at others. Personally even Dubber had/has spiralling issues with his set-up. Good luck 😃
I think is most UK (under 12ft/lb) guns slugs have to be light (say sub 25gr for .22) and be quite soft lead
I’m just looking for a slug. That’ll work well in my Gamo swarm maxim. I know they say brake barrels don’t work well with slugs but I know there’s one out there that will work.
Try the H&N that is what I hear works best. Can't be certain as I don't have a Gamo
Most of the time your Springers just do not generate enough feet per second to throw a slug. slugs like speed and spin
Thanks for video brother!
I recently bought Hatsan Bullmaster .25 and it won't like any slugs. What this rifle prefers are the cheapest, lightest pellets. I read somewhere that Hatsan does not recommend shooting slugs with the Bullmaster...
That's like my hatsan flash in .22 cal and I'm not complaining but it loves the super cheap Crosman hollow points that you can get 500 at Walmart for like $ 6.99,
My 30 cal redwolf safari shoots pellets accurately up to 180 yards. It pushes Fx pellets at 870 fps. I wonder if it can shoot light slugs probably around 800 accurately?
Very good information and very understandable , great video like allways 🎯
Much appreciated
to his point actually have two of the Gen 2 Chiefs and one of them to be honest even with trying to do those mods only one of them shoots like a match rifle and the other one is very unpredictable to be honest and that just might be the barrel I've never switched the two on the two power plants to see if it's it I just left the one that works perfectly alone after modification
I have 30gr, 33gr, and 44gr .25cal zan.
I treat the beam in Chief 177 I've actually tuned it down a bunch with a more efficient valve now that's the only thing I actually changed modified the hammer spring with hand tools replace seals with hand tools upgraded them so more correct fit and then log that in a book for maintenance but at 2550 and 65 yards I can group under a quarter of an inch shooting anywhere from 600 to about 900 ft per second PS if you lower your gun down to 600 ft per second for a 15-grain slug you get about 100 shots instead of like 40 or 30 I don't know if this is a proven theory but I just took its twist rate 16.5 did some simple math cuz the nsa's are supposed to be optimized at shooting out of a 14 but in a real gun it'd be more around a seven to a 10 so simple math ended up working out for me it's kind of like figured out where the FPS should be versus like where that sun would actually be optimize at high speed where it actually a centerfire rifle slug out of like a carbine taking 2,000 ft per second to 2400 ft per second as my base
To further that - some rifles will not shoot slugs at all...my AV Avenger 22cal and Hatsan Flashpup QE are perfect examples. To clarify my statement - I'm stating nowhere near as consistent as pellets. I gave up after months of tinkering w/ the Hatsan and more recently - after weeks of testing every .22cal Nielsen size & weight, JSB KOs, and FX Hybrids in my Avenger... that was with extensive Reg and Hammer Spring settings as well, so the full gammet. Now, what HAS worked in my Avenger...and I mean EXCEPTIONAL for me...is the .22cal FX 25.39gr (JSB Monster ReDesign). 20 out of 21 in a ragged (~9mm) hole at 54yds. And that's at 859fps & 41.6 ft/lbs of energy. My .30cal FX Maverick Sniper is a whole different story - it's tuned with FX Hybrids and shoots them so well, my Element scope turret is dope marked out to 275yds
So. How fast are you pushing the FX HYBRIDS out of your Maverick Sniper 30? What is reg?.
I have the same with slug barrel NSA 55GR at 910fps 160 bar Hammer MAX.
The hatsan barrels are choked n seem to like deep based slugs or so I've found with my slugs.... My flash 22 was picky but once I tuned the hammer spring I got it to shoot hybrids and my deep tapered base slugs really well.... My 22 avenger shoots anything I put in it, it's a monster
Great video on this matter. my fx DL classic stx barrel loves QYS 9.57 sub 12-ft lbs 177 UK but limited on power so its not the best but jsb 10.03 gr s
ar not bad but sticking with pellets Hades in my p35 custom ar amazing but will keep testing as it's interesting barrel will like it or not
Slugs are the way to go.
Good information
Very true! EXCELLENT information...
Rite on Moose good job answered my questions 🤙mahalo
Good advice thanks
Slugs are best shot in FX guns where you can get different slug liners designed for certain slugs. Cheap guns just won't shoot slugs well. Or even some more expensive pellet guns won't work because of twist rates and fps that your gun can actually achieve.
Not at all true
True facts!
Thanks for a great video and a lot of information to consider.
I'm relatively new to airguns. I recently bought four break barrel Gamo Swarm Magnum Gen 3i's but didn't buy ammo yet. Do you have any suggestions for best accuracy and fpe for small game to include possums, raccoons, and foxes? Also what is the maximum fpe at maximum range I should expect? I want to focus on teaching my son humane hunting.
Thanks again.
Stay Safe, Be Well, God Bless.
That is a question only you will be able to decide. Each gun is different when it comes to ammo selection, I would try stuff on the heavier side as to not break the sound barrier with those Gamos. If you dont have a chronograph I would suggest getting one so you can see the FPE you are getting with specific pellets. Sorry I didnt have a better answer but try some pellets out. You can find lots at www.myhighpressureair.com
@@abitoutside Thanks for your prompt reply!! Half hour turn around. Very impressive. Just subscribed. 👍
Where can we buy the NSA sampler pack? in Airguns of AZ &Trenier outdoors have been sold out for so long and doesn’t’ have anything on their inventory?
www.myhighpressureair.com
I think I saw some on eBay
Just like pellets not all guns shoot them the same way!
Can you damage a barrel that was made for pellets shooting slugs? Having more contact area than a pellet slugs will put more wear on the rifling. Some barrels just look like a thin rifled tube pressed or pushed or inserted into a steel support tube or barrel rather than solid rifled steel. Does any air gun mfg. use a firearm type rifled hammer forged barrel. None I have read about seem to emphasize that in their specs.
I would like to try some slugs in my under lever springer . It is a relatively inexpensive under lever rifle and I do not want to damage it. I think the heavier slugs would be better for the wind. Are springers powerful enough for slugs under 75 yards?
I enjoyed this video and look forward to you honest opinions. Thank You:
In my personal experience springers do not do well with slugs, they are not inherently designed to shoot slugs. PCP air guns are made to push slugs most of the time, however a good adjustable PCP is where I would start with slugs.
@@abitoutside I have a Gauntlet 1,would the 2 be better.
The two is nice. But check out Hajimoto Productions for your one. He will make that thing amazing
@hajimoto
You can shoot slugs out of the Springer , who knows you may get lucky and it likes one of them , but as far as damage no it will not damage it,
hey howcome the sample packs are like non existent right now? looking for 25. every site is out it sucks. i guess a box of each will do :P
Yea they are hard to find. I think www.myhighpressureair.com might have some in stock. Not sure

If a same make and model gun shoots vastly different from the other, then we can safely say the manufacturer has no business in making guns.

WOW I was blown away I know a 25, c cat not shoot throe a possum head at close rang it well bounce off a full size possum so have to us my 357 or 45.7 but I rather use the 357 bannerman bulldog. I was going to buy a .30 call but not now I save me $500 lol the possum is the strongest boon on any animal. I can kill a coyote at a 100 yards with my .25 call
I'm not sure what you meant in the beginning there but I use my aea HP varmint all the time on pest animals, I have shot a lot of possums with slugs and it always drops them with one shot if they're facing straight at me I will shoot about a half inch above the center of their eyes dead center forehead , if it's a side shot I go through the ear and every single one has dropped where I shot it
How to shoot slugs, get a gun that shoots them accurately, buy lots of slugs then leave your tune and gun alone!
I reload my AR and as they say. Every gun has a favorite girlfriend
Amen
Why bother with slugs What's wrong with pellets?
I don't know. I love pellets, what do you think is wrong with them?
You can push them faster, they have higher weight, higher BC, and so they can go further, with less wind deflection, less drop and more energy on target. But you're compromising on other areas.
@@Patrick-857I was about to say the same exact thing and if you want to shoot longer distances of course the slug is the way to go
