    I'll be honest, a break-in I experienced was 5 people trying to use overwhelming force. 4 big dudes with knives, 1 big woman with a gun. A gun with a high-capacity, decent caliber, and some range capability would've been nicer than trying to hide my sister and wounded roommate in a bathroom while I guarded with a cheap machete until the police arrived. Luckily the woman had no aim and missed my roommate as he ran for his life with a large stab wound in his liver. I don't expect that to occur again, but I'd rather be prepared if it does. It isn't fun watching someone bleed out who didn't deserve it.

    The dangerous chemicals in the house advice is so freaking important.
    My niece's friend (6 years old girl) went to visit a friend. The hosting mother at some point said she is going to the shop and be back in less than 10 mins. The two little girls then decided to shampoo their hair. The host girl picked a bottle in the bathroom and poured the liquid on the hair of my niece's friend and within seconds she started screaming in pain. It turned out that the bottle was an acid drain cleaner. It burned her scalp, face, and chest.
    She has had many surgeries but it still shows.
    Please be cognisant of what chemicals you have at home.

      Are you sure it wasn't an alkaline (basic) drain cleaner? Just curious because I've gotten concentrated sulphuric acid on my skin (100% for non-aqueous reactions, thic like syrup, usually the main ingredient in drain cleaner) as well as very concentrated (like 10 M) HCl, both were mildly irritating abd caused dry skin.
      I wonder if I had let it sit longer if it would start to burn *I know nitric does!
      And no, I wasn't a sloppy chemist, I just had a habit of holding beurettes and staring at my expiriment.
      Sorry if my question seems unsympathetic, I'm truly just curious (I've always thought movies gave acids a way more dangerous reputation than deserved, now am double thinking that)

    I’ve only heard of the “racking the slide.” Deterrent working once. When my Uncle was on the Highway patrol he was chasing a car in the middle of the night, the car had spun out and crashed into a ditch and the suspect had jumped out and started running through a field.
    My Uncle apparently not wanting to chase the guy in the dark grabbed his shotgun from the rack as he was exiting his patrol car and jumped on the hood of the suspect’s vehicle and racked the pump. The Suspect surrendered almost instantly, dropping to the ground like a sack of potatoes.
    I believe the deterrent worked in that instance because the guy was trying to flee instead of fight, if it had been the other way around I’m sure it would of been a different story.

You can have as many tacticool guns as you want, but if you only realize you need to use one when your door bursts open you stand a lot less of a chance than if your dog perks his head up when he hears the latch on your fence in the backyard and you become aware of the intruder before they even enter your home.

  • @gameroftheyear1000
    @gameroftheyear1000 Před 2 lety +40

    This video perfectly sums up the simple genius of Paul Harrell. The videos are not overly produced, Paul uses a very basic and straightforward vocabulary which makes getting his points across very easy, his life experiences, especially that of his time serving in the military make every nuance of what he presents have some weight behind to make them stick and he just cuts to the chase and keeps the video straight to the point. Also as an added bonus is that every point he tries to get across does not only apply to firearms and firearm safety but they also can be taken in the context of life. Just like that guns are not toys, life is not a one big game. Sure there are moments in there where you’re having fun out on the range with your buddies for a day of target shooting and you get to have fun moments in life, but at the end of the day, guns are still tools that needed to be treated with respect and can end with some devastating consequences otherwise just to at the end of every day, you still have to get up and work to make a living and pay your bills. It’s just how it is and it perfectly sums up Paul’s videos to me. I personally do not care for guys like the demolition ranch and FPSRussia where it’s all about making a show out of shooting guns where to Paul, you can take a life lesson and valuable information out of it and for that I’m here to stay!

Every time I ever thought about it, I assumed I would be some cool and calculated guy who handled himself prefectly. That couldn't be farther from the truth, I was terrified.
    Fortunately the simple display (and aiming at the chest) of my 9mm was enough to get him to stop doing what he was doing without any shots fired, however, I now realise that I need to look at that situation with a more realistic point of view. I also realise that being in such a position is awful and it's something I wish nobody would ever need to be involved in.

    @Elthenar Před 5 lety +587

    As a former thug, I can second everything this man said. The 3-5 man crew coming at your house is only going to happen if you are a prime target. Someone who is known to have lots of cash or jewelry, like a drug dealer, a jewelry shop owner, something like that. Those people are looking for target that they can hit fast, take lots of small and easily liquidated goods and get out in a hurry.
    The much more common threat is the burglar he mentioned, that jealous ex or someone else with a personal axe to grind. Maybe the guy down the street who thinks you called the cops because his stereo was too loud. Maybe he thinks your dog pooped in his yard. There are a million possibilities, which is partly why it's so much more likely than getting hit by a crew
    Another prime security tip is to get motion lights and sensors on your doors and windows that make some noise. If someone breaks a window to get in and they hear something start beeping, they are going to haul ass most of the time before you ever need to get a weapon. It's the same principle as the dog, if with a bit less teeth.
    A point to add about the revolvers, they are great because they can be stored forever and still work. You don't have to worry about a magazine spring getting weak and failing to load, or the hammer spring failing. If you get a dead round, just keep pulling the trigger and you will get shots off. Those revolvers really are about as reliable as guns get.

      Those were awesome points he made. I've been to the homes of acquaintances who had safe rooms with an armory inside. Know what I asked? Where's your fire extinguisher? People rarely think about stuff like that, but the biggest gun collection in the world won't mean much when your dryer catches on fire and takes your house down, or even in the case of a natural disaster where you might have mere moments to evacuate your home (think: wildfire). I've been evacuated in a fire once and I didn't even have enough time to grab a pair of shoes, let alone secure any sort of weapon. Makes no sense to be prepared for a zombie apocalypse but completely overlook the odds of a grease fire in your kitchen.

    I was rewatching this video and took a few good points from it. One thing that I feel is important to mention is that I live in South Africa and here generally home invasion do tend to be very violent and usually involve for the most part multiple attackers (go google South Afican farm murders) in both rural and more densely populated areas. My home defence setup is mostly based around ammo capacity (glock 19 with g17 mag with +2 extension). I am thinking of perhaps getting a glock happy stick for my nightstand🤷🏼‍♂️

    • @joeblow9657
      @joeblow9657 Před 5 měsíci +1

      Fair point. My key take away was always prepare for what you're most likely to encounter, not what looks cool. For most Americans, just having a gun with some decent ammo capacity is enough. In your case you seem to know what you want and I think you sold your first Glock! Congrats!
      I don't have a firearm for home defence because I'm not really in a position where I can have access to it. I live with family who don't want guns in their house but I'd probably have more of a need for some thing with more rounds as the only likely situation where I'd need to use a gun for home defence is if people are trying to break into my house. My mother could have had much for use for something that works well against one person, mainly her estranged abuser of an ex husband, at least when things were getting weird.

    4:09 I am a survivor of a home invasion after spending the night at a friend's house one weekend. Luckily the invaders seemed to have only been burglars and did not appear to have been armed. When my friend's father was alerted to the threat, he grabbed a shot gun and did the "rack the slide deterrent" which worked.The burglars freaked out and scrambled. One went out the front door and one went out the back. No one was harmed, but we were all traumatized.

Chaining a dog in the backyard and interacting with it only to feed and water it daily... is like solitary confinement for these incredibly social creatures.
      I have no problem with “outside dogs”, but they need a fence (and at least two dogs as a pair can be much happier) if the owner doesn’t have time to really exercise them.

If I saw him holding it and didn't know why it's one of his favorites, I'd be extremely confused that he isn't glaring at it and shaking his head with disdain, as he generally doesn't truck with flashy sci-fi/tacticool/gunfad appearance. However, he's practical enough that he won't eschew a gussied up gun when it legitimately has all the functions he needs. He doesn't care what it looks like and he doesn't care what anyone thinks of him using it. He just wants the best tool for the job.
