- Today we have part two of our run of interviews with The National in celebration of their new album, First Two Pages of Frankenstein. Last week Broken Producer producer Leah Rose talked to guitarist and composer Aaron Dessner, and today Leah picks up the conversation with the band’s lead singer, Matt Berninger.
Matt, whose fear and anxiety are often on full display in his songwriting, talks about overcoming a debilitating bout of depression in the period before he started writing songs for the new album. He also explains how the combination of weed and iced tea help him spark creativity. And why he hopes his songwriting impresses Phoebe Bridgers and Taylor Swift.

ABOUT BROKEN RECORD
For generations of music lovers, the liner notes on albums were a central part of the way music was heard. You bought an album and it came with an accompanying narrative: a digression, an aside, a backstory-maybe even an invented history. We intuitively understood that great music required not just listening but conversation between the artist and the audience and the audience and the rest of the world.
Broken Record is a podcast that restarts those conversations-in a world without liner notes-for a new audience of music lovers.
Broken Record is hosted by Justin Richmond with interviews by producer Rick Rubin, writer Malcolm Gladwell, and former New York Times editor Bruce Headlam.

Hearing someone whose entire catalogue has more re-playability than most my other albums combined talk about trying to figure out the formula for what makes a song great...is pretty great.
I really appreciate these interviews and the depths. Kudos to the interviewer for allowing Matt to speak.
GREAT interview!!
I don’t even know that band but I’m YouTubing them now.
This group, their lyrics and delivery.. Matt's voice and interpretation, the way he sings the lyrics, the not so perfect timing, everything.... They've helped me out of a very dark place in my life....I can't even describe what happens to my insides when I hear them....I can't even come up with the proper words to describe what they do to me.... Thank you for possibly saving my life 💔💜🙏
Part of The National's magic sauce for me is how their music can meet me in that dark place and just hang out there for a while if that's what I need, or it can fling open the curtains and let some light in, or it can grab me by the hand and get me up to dance. I FINALLY, after 17 years, got to see them live this summer and it was everything I hoped for.
These two comments describe what this band mean to me. I just saw them live last night and it was hands down the best gig I’ve ever seen. Sublime ❤
Awesome album, the voice of Matt is unique and relaxing
New 'record' is fantastic
Wow Amazing, I love how honest Matt Berninger always is about the creative process and how he works through it to reach excellence. Congrats on another great questions & great interview Leah!
Fuckin' love these guys so much
🙏
Not a massive National fan but it doesn't sound like the interviewer is quite comfortable with the music subject in general
