Hong Kong. A city I know all too well. I didn't expect to be able to visit in 2022, or at any point in the near future. But when the Hong Kong government announced the borders were opening and the quarantine would be dropped, I knew I had to go find out how much the place had changed. I last visited in 2019, a tumultuous year for the city, to say the least. So many things had happened since then, and most of the world didn't notice.
So my plan was to hit the streets and get some answers. Along the way I'd get a very stimulating foot massage and find out the new rules for clubbing in HK.

How could it be? According to the 2022's Human Freedom Index report, Hk ranks 43, while CCP China ranks 152 (out of the total 163 countries). Something is wrong! How could it be that one country gets two rankings? Isn't it against the National security Law.
Should Chief Lee be arrested for accepting the result, and promoting the 2- country idea in public?

Actually laughed out loud when I got to 16:50, lovely use of language and lovely video. I’m honoured that you love our city, we can sense it by the way you speak about it. I’m one of many who moved to England from Hong Kong in the past year or two, and sometimes I miss the familiarity that Hong Kong holds, but you made me feel like I was there again - from a fresh perspective as well, as a tourist! Thank you for filming this from such an authentic viewpoint.

Just like the guy said in 13:08, it is okay if you just want a safe place to live, but if you want more freedom then Hong Kong is not the case.
As a Hong Kong resident, I think Tommy's Cantonese is better than many Chinese from other provinces. He can use Cantonese to bargain at the Ladies Market. He even knows that Cantonese slang like suit guys 西裝友. I wonder how many languages does Tommy know (should be more than 10) 😅

Some say the locals are stuck in Hong Kong and trying to escape, but I believe there are many like me who just adores Hong Kong too much to leave. It is not the same but somewhere in Hong Kong, it is still our home, forever and ever.

One of the thing I realized about HK when I first came back from living in Canada was, Hong Kong is like a big terminal, people comes and goes. People from around Asia and the world would come here for different reason. Depends on the people, some people would stay long enough and settle. Hong Kong has always been a city known for its fast pace, and it is constantly changing.
This!
I personally love that. Some of us have that same personality and it's wondeful

I've been in Hong Kong dozens of times but usually stay in Kowloon. Best noodles on earth! Hong Kong is all about the food for me. My first trip there was in 1971, my last was 2003. Roast Pork crispy noodles...mouth watering...Char shou chow mien.
uhhh, I think they have some competition?
Greg Mock, if you have money to go to Hong Kong, and you are Chinese, but all you can talk about are roast pork crispy noodles!!!! How about the awesome tasting delicacy food such as abalone and ginseng congee or soup? Abalone is so delicious that even the canned abalone are awesome too !!!! Ginseng congee or ginseng soup also taste so awesomely good. Char shou chow mein are just ordinary food that is available everywhere in the Chinese restaurants in the USA. You seems to says that these ordinary food are so much better tasting in Hong Kong!!!!! Chinese food such as Roast Pork crispy noodles are Americanized Chinese food in the USA. I don’t care for any of these so ordinary food. The American culture is junk food such as pizza, burgers, fried chicken and French fries which are feed to even 2 year old babies!!!!!
Thank you for your love to Hong Kong and presenting our home to the world. Your footage is so real and natural to me that I do think anyone who doesn't know Hong Kong will get the most authentic understanding within this half-an-hour video.

I just found your channel today and I immediately fell in love with your content. Your format, your humor, your camera style. I genuinley feel like we're just too close friends joking around with eachother while we walk along the streets of some city you apparently have a vast knowledge of. I just walk next to you the whole way while you make random remarks about street signs or local history. Dude, keep this up. I beg of you. This is how travel content should be.
If you can, start from the first video and work your way up. It's a roller-coaster.
Fair play, really jealous of the way you pick up enough of each language to be able to have decent conversations! Amazing!

Thanks Tommy, The best intro to H.K. I've seen. Back in the last century it stuck me that HK and NYC were the two most similar cities in the world on pretty much all levels, and that you can hate it or love it for the same reasons.
this feels so nostalgic and strange at the same time, the last time i went back to HK was 2012. I spent my first 18 years of my life in HK, but then I never went to those massage parlours nor clubbed back there. Appreciated this little trip with you, thank you!
Me and my brother used to go to Hong Kong all the time during 2017, 2018, and 2019. The last time we went was the November before pandemic started and we witnessed protests, riots, police blocking roads and throwing tear gas, etc. One memory I have is us having to run from tear gas being thrown on the street, we hightailed it a few streets down and took refuge inside a 7-11 while we waited for it to die down. Going home using the metro was not possible that day due to riots and protests, we had to call an Uber and even that took us having to walk 30 minutes to a different part of Kowloon for the driver to be able to pick us up. We saw firsthand what was going on at that time. Other than that though, I have the best memories of traveling to HK multiple times in my life. The feeling I get when I'm there is unexplainable. It's retro and luxurious, but heavily cultured and down to earth, yet nostalgic and timeless at the same time. It is a place that I will always keep close to my heart. So glad to find your CZcams and see how things are there in the current times. Can't wait to see more of HK. Kudos, enjoy and be safe.

Very happy that I got recommended this video as a Hongkonger, just like a lot of people that commented. I don’t usually watch vlogs but this one is different, I died of laughter at 16:50, and was like “what the heck” when he spent $90 hkd to buy an umbrella.
Definitely agree on what you said at last, really appreciate this video, it made me happy and made my day :)
What I liked about Hong Kong from the video is the atmosphere. A mix of depressing and solitary vibes which is totally different from the crazy chaotic energy in countries like Thailand, Vietnam, India where the streets don't look pleasant, the buildings look semi destroyed. Hong Kong kinda reminds me of Japan but with less people. Overall you can feel the friendly vibes like they showed in the old movies. Would love to visit. Not sure about living there though. But looks interesting. Maybe it looks totally different with no rain too.
The contrast between the people and the architecture is crazy. It’s kind of a rigid society but unlike japan people are really easy to start conversations with and easy to relate to, even when they aren’t drinking. In japan you gotta wait til they are drunk and there’s more distance still. Of course many great people everywhere tho.
Hong Kong is denser than Japan

this video is pretty different from what hong kong used to be like. I grew up there, there are usually way more people out and about. It looked weirdly very quiet for HK.

You know nothing, and your conjecture based on your poor reasoning and biased views are down right pathetic.
Firstly, let's address your reasoning. What does being arrogance and rude have anything to do with dealing with oppression? Nothing.
Secondly, Hong Kong people had that reputation before the handover. People from mainland China were always looked down upon by Hong Kong people. Show your parents 大陸燦 and ask them what it means. Hong Kong never had democracy under British rule, and it was never promised universal suffrage after the hand over. So why we never saw riots on the scale of 2019 before the handover? Is not having "democracy" acceptable just because you are ruled by white people?
It was never about fighting for democracy. It is all about the xenophobia towards people from mainland China and hatred towards the CCP.

This is so sad to watch. I've visited Hong Kong many times over the years-I used to live in Bangkok and then Taipei, and would often fly in for the weekend-and last stayed there for a few days in November 2019, right before the shit hit the fan. It was sad to watch the city slowly get absorbed into the mainland, but this is next-level dystopia.
Absorbed into the mainland ? HK is part of China until it was taken away by the British during opium war ie the British selling drugs to weaken the Chinese & like any robbers took the land. Now HK is just another city in China.

@张子嘉 Oh the CCP are colonisers alright, they just don't bring any benefit, only destruction of people and civilisations. Your ancestors died at the hands of the CCP. 40-60 million were murdered by the CCP. But of course you don't care about that. When Britain was given Hong Kong in a peace treaty, we brought advanced civilisation. Brings me to your last point - the British are far, far, far wealthier than China. Your average salary and percentage of wealth adjusted for population is so far behind the UK it is ridiculous. Sorry to have to tell you the truth. My first time in Hong Kong was 1987. It was love at first sight. I took my wife there in 2010 and it was still as wonderful as I remembered. I weep for that Hong Kong. I hope it reinvents itself into something wonderful again.
Wow, you visited Hong Kong around the height of its cinema. 80s and 90s Hong Kong movies were popular all over the world and you were right there, in the epicenter.
Love your films dude. They are super cool and authentic.
What an updated tour of Hong Kong!
these videos are amazing. it feels like you're just walking around hong kong and telling us what you find. It feels so unproffesional but thats what i like the most.
that awkward moment when you ask for a massage and the pretty lady walks out of the room and in walks the old man! LOL!
Ooh I’m so excited to see HK with you!
