The NuX sounded clearer and more present. My experience with the Blackstar is that it sounds more than good enough for quiet home use, though. Also sounds a lot better with the extension cab. Great comparison!

I've got a Blackstar Fly and to be honest it sounds a lot better than the one in the video, for some reason the one being demonstrated sounds very muddy especially on the clean channel and thats just not the case with mine. I've also got an Orange Crush mini which has a much rawer sound than both those featured here.

Someone in the comments asked for the dimensions of the NU:X.
All weights and dimensions are approximate, with the Amp having a full complement of Duracell batteries.
The box with PSU, Amp and batteries inside weighs 1180g. Box dimensions are 24.5cm x 12.0 x 15.5.
    The Amp weighs 870g with batteries. Amp dimensions are 17.0cm x 9.6 x 13.7.
    The PSU is in a box with dimensions 9.0cms x 9.0 x 5.5
The box is well padded with foam inserts. If you remove the PSU then it leaves a space in the foam approx 9.0 x 9.0 x 5.5 into which you could fit some small items, such as spare batteries!

I saw the Fly 3 about 2 months ago and thought I'd give it a try with my mandolins. Initially I was pleased with it, until I tried it with my main mandolin, a Godin A8. With this one instrument, there was an unpleasant sound with every pick strike that I couldn't get rid of. I've had the Godin for a few years and tried it in a number of amps and PAs with zero issues.
I demonstrated the Fly 3 to a friend who had no problems with his guitars and he bought it from me at cost. He also plays bass uke, so he's now bought the Bass version of the Fly 3 and is pleased with that.
I used the money from the Fly 3 to buy a Fly 3 Acoustic. Nice clean sounds from my uke and mandolins, except for the Godin. I got a refund from Amazon, and tried the NU:X. Whilst the Blackstars are generally good, the NU:X is great. Absolutely no problems with the Godin or any other instruments, and it's now my main practice amp.
My friend and I both play in a uke band, and once gigs restart we're going to see whether our respective bass Fly 3, and NU:X are going to be sufficient for the small, acoustic gigs we usually play. If they are then it will save a lot of hassle lugging around the heavy combos we've used before.

I've got the fly 3 but I regret this choice for a simple reason. The fly3 can be powered (other than batteries) just by 6.5V blackstar adaptor that is not included in the package. You can't use a normal 9V/5V powerbank with blackstar fly3. On the contrary with NUX you can also use a normal powerbank.

Fly owner here. In this test the NUX sounds slightly better. I have to say though that in reality the fly doesn't sound muffled with my Tele. Somethings wrong there. The NUX also has more features. I'd still trust more Blackstar products though.

    • @surfnsarangi
      @surfnsarangi Před 4 lety +4

The Blackstar sounds muffled because he's treating the tone knobs on the two amps as if they're the same, but by putting them in the same position he's actually dialing in a different sound because the "tone" knob on the Blackstar is configured differently than conventional amps in that it's not bass and treble, it selects between USA and UK voiced amps. That means when he dails the knob to the right on the Blackstar it makes the tone mid-heavy instead of trebly like on the NUX. To match the tone he should dail the knob to the left to achieve a more mid-scooped tone which the NUX has as a predisposition. I hope that helps.

    • @andreil1234
      @andreil1234 Před 4 lety

@@surfnsarangi Well that voicing knob, it's not exactly doing the same as the ISF on the larger blackstar offerings. TBH it's more like transitioning between an u shaped to an n shaped eq for the lack of a better comparison, but it's far from a voice selector with blend.

I've been looking to get a small amp like this for a while. Have looked at the Blackstar many times but keep looking anyway.
Just saw the NU>X for the first time recently and was eager to hear a comparison between the two. Thanks for that.
I still think the Blackstar is the better value tiny amp for the money. To me it was cleaner in both the clean and overdriven channels.
Yes i think the NU>X was slightly warmer in some respects but became overworked when in overdrive to a point of unasked for distortion.
Plus, If the advertised prices are still correct. You can buy the Blackstar with the added extension speaker,
which takes it to a 6 watt, stereo amp, for the same price as the NU>X.

To reduce the "plastic box" timbre in my NUX I put a 2 mm layer of blu-tack on its inner walls and on the basket of the loudspeaker.
I also stuffed inside some polyester padding in order to damp resonance in high frequencies.
I also recommend to block in a more solid way the printed circuit to the box, because it vibrates with high volume.
Next step will be to replace the original loudspeaker with a better one.

In my opinion, BF3 is much more suitable for acoustic guitar, it has its own mastered output sound (or maybe input), softer, smoother, but that creates an uneccessary in sound checking, just for practice, feel like no need to plug mixer in or FL to master, also suitable for jazz, pop, ballad
Nux in the other hand, has raw sound, more based on the technique of a guitarist to maintain the output sound, rock and other kind of rock music would be perfect for this amp. But to the one who new to guitar, might not have the usual habit to that kind of raw sound.
In the end, both are good, and have their own issue why using. Choosing which one is good for you is based on what your purpose for playing music. Thanks for having this comparision video, keep it up for other mini amp, or amp for stage.

Are you using Bluetooth and the NU:X app on your phone? Each time you press the button, it changes to the default settings for that channel. You can set up your favourite default for each channel using the phone app. If you're just playing around with the app, it's possible to create a default with either the gain or volume set low (or zero).
If you haven't already, I suggest you use the app to connect to the Bluetooth of your phone, and set up explicit defaults for each channel. Maybe that will solve your issues for you.

The NU-X wins. I started to write more but no. It either wins by a small margin or it beats the living crap out of it in both channels.

To me they sound very close. Nux has clearer highs, Blackstar borders on muddy, but I suspect that can be tweaked?
However, in Denmark at least, the price for the Fly including power supply is about the same as the Nux, and that nudges me towards the Nux.
    Great demo btw!

The NUX definitely has a lot more drive, even in the clean channel. I really like it, but the Blackstar has a more, I guess raw sound to it. Hard to pick. Anyway, good video

I have both amps, I prefer the NuX. Not to mention it has a built-in drum machine and Bluetooth. It also came with the power supply which you have to buy separately if you have the Blackstar. I still like the Blackstar but the NuX is a little better sounding and a better bargain.

I really don't understand why everybody on CZcams that doesn't demo of something audio. Did they have the sound down so low you couldn't hear the difference at all. You guys are all Crane in demo amplifiers and other sound equipment. can you get the volume so low on your video you can't hear. The rest of the video is always loud but when it comes to the comparison. Everybody has a sound so low you cannot hear. So frustrating

@@landonbaileydidn't mean to sound critical. I like to review . But your speaking voice is really loud couldn't hear it fine. Within the audio drop down dropped down tremendously. When you were comparing. Amplifiers. So much so I couldn't even hear a difference. Just thought it might be something you might want to look into. Before you put up videos. Other than that I think you are doing a great job.

The NUX sounds better, but at almost 2x the price, I’m not sure it’s worth it for me for a little battery amp. And I thought the Katana mini sounded better than the NUX, so at the higher price point, it would be Katana mini for me.
    Great comparisons.

At a higher price the NUX comes with additional features like Bluetooth, both overdrive and distortion, reverb and delay and a drum machine - and they offer an app for even more modulations.

My question was specific. I am not interested to use headphones. Many talk good about how well yamaha thr plays at low volumes and that what I ask. Specs doesn't say much to me. In a few reviews they talk about how the sounds are in reality two and the others not so close to reality. Other say that the Bluetooth sound is crap. In none of the review (and I believe I saw them all) they have made demonstration (If there is indeed this function and if it works like they say) the EQ function that take away the guitar sound from the mp3 you put to play.
