Having just read Darth Plagueis, Palpatine knew of this ability from his master who used it for decades to recover from an ambush attack. It seems Palps wanted his pet to remain under his control since he was so powerful in the Force.
The travesty is in execution. Plagueis spent years practicing learning and struggling to develop this ability. So for the bestest evar Rey-ry Sue to just be able to do it is horribly offensive.

People at the beginning of the sequel trilogy: well, the movie definitely has flaws, but i think it'll be a great stepping stone for a trilogy.
People at the middle of the trilogy: ohh geez. Uhh... Come on guys, its the middle part, we can redeem this... Right?

I was so hyped After the first film. Afterall Disney had nailed it with Rogue One, it could happen again no?
Then the second film dropped, scrapped EVERYTHING the first film hyped up, and the third film just gave up any logic or sense because the 2nd had butchered everything beyond repair.
it's frustrating that and ray changes her name to Skywalker like she doesn't care about her parents who both sacrificed her life for her and were named Palpatine showing that good people can be named Papatine.
This Entire Trilogy was absolute garbage. In force awakens, which most people seem to consider the best of the three, when Han gets killed, Leia walks right past Chewie - the same Chewie Han told to protect Leia when he was frozen in carbonite - to go comfort Rey, who they had all just met. Why can't people write anymore?!?!

There's also something to be said about the subtlety of Vader's force choke versus Ren's move. Vader is sending a message, he's not dishing out punishment for the scepticism, he's educating the rest of the room, whilst subtly re-establishing his authority that has just been questioned by the tone of Motti's comments. The Ren scene is just an act of petty petulance, a child lashing out in a temper tantrum. He's educated no one, earned no respect. He hasn't ruthlessly removed incompetency from the chain of command, he's simply created an environment of fear by wasting potential talent because he was asked a reasonable question.
This. Kylo Force chokes an officer when he asks: "and what does he (Palpatine) want in return?" You know what? That's a perfectly reasonable question. The kind of question I would expect a competent officer to ask. This isn't a rebel Kylo is killing. This isn't someone who FAILED him. Why, Kylo, are you so pointlessly angry all the time, you absolute cheese sandwich?
The real reason why this is happening is because JJ thought: "how can I make Kylo more intimidating? Hey, Vader used to choke people to death, right? Well I'M gonna make Kylo choke someone to death, too! There. Done. Moving on." And this is the awful way that JJ writes. It's either "reference" or "wouldn't it be cool if . . ." He doesn't think about scenes any deeper than that.
@@KneelB4Bacon I agree but there's also so much to that Vader scene that flies under the radar. Motti has just questioned the existence of the Force, Vader could have just moved a cup on the table, instead he chokes him, demonstrating that the force exists, and establishing in the audience's mind that this is the bad guy. But he shows restraint, a subtlety of control that tells you this guy has a level of control that is dangerous because he doesn't grab him by the throat and choke him out, he simply and calmly pinches shut his windpipe. That tells the audience this guy is calm and calculated, not an indiscriminate killer.
The reactions of the other staff show you that Vader is not someone to be trifled with, with only Tarkin telling him to stop and even then only after allowing him to make his point. He's an enemy you can respect, one you should definitely fear, he's shown to be intelligent and well spoken, a man in total control of his emotions. This is what great writing looks like, because you learn more about Vader in those few seconds than you do about Kylo Ren in the entire sequel trilogy. With the subtlety of a simple gesture, we immediately are told exactly what kind of bad guy to expect from Vader. It's a masterclass of writing.

Luke tried to find a dagger for years to find and finally end Palpatine WHILE BEING A HERMIT AND GIVING UP BEING A JEDI......every 1 of these movies are NOT connected in the slightest way.....this trilogy is a fkn fever dream
Obviously this is a D&D game where Rey's player is the GM's girlfriend and a massive jerk.
She clearly had a custom class/subclass made to get all the cool powers she wants. 20 in every score because her boyfriend the GM has no spine. Doesn'te even try to roleplay. I mean it fits really well.
Then Kylo is the Dm's stupid NPC thats only around cos Rey thinks of the character as her boyfriend.

I just stopped paying attention to anything regarding the cinematic “continuity” when this stuff got released. Star Wars is only truly real to me in the expanded universe, where the real fans make stuff.

They had 30 years to write these movies, if you really think about it. Even worse, J.J. Abrams knew for some time that he was going to be the driver behind these movies, and he could not even be bothered with an outline for all three. By the end of the Last Jedi, it was painfully obvious that there was no true direction they were going with the series. But, the biggest crime of it all, they had one last opportunity to get the old gang back together again, which to be honest, is what the fans wanted to see. Even if it would have been just for part of the movie, they shit on that whole idea, and now it is simply too late, it can never happen. Thanks Disney, for fucking the fans!
Yeah it's a pity we never saw Luke, Leia, Han, Chewbacca, Lando, C3PO, RDR2 all in one scene. They even got Lando only in the third because they were like "oh shit, we forgot Lando was in the original trilogy, huh, I guess we have to put him somewhere now for nostalgia"

Of the revamped original Star Wars had Anakin ghost be young Anakin as opposed to the original ones having him be old, why is Luke’s ghost old Luke? Also, why a dagger? I don't mean to beat up a dead horse, but the opening sequence, with the hyperspace jumps, also brutally shits on the originals. Remember how Han Solo refused to jump ONCE without calculating a trajectory, arguing that it can land him and the Falcon in certain death? The sequel heroes jump...2, 3, 4 times in the span of a minute? That sequence still breaks my heart and soul.
You know a movie is bad when not even John Williams can make it watchable.
This film is this generation's _Highlander II: The Quickening_ - not just for desecrating what came before, but for being just such a poorly made movie in general.
Jar Jar Abrams also completely ripped off Raiders of the Lost Ark. Stolen ideas:
- opens with looting an artifact from a temple (Sith Wayfinder instead of Monkey Idol)
- multiple McGuffin goose chase with the bad guys always just 1 step behind
- Exagol the hidden planet, Tanis the lost city
- Sith dagger is like the Staff of Ra: place it in the right spot at a vista to reveal a hidden location
- pit with a giant serpent instead of a pit of snakes
- Chewie is captured and put on a transport that Rey blows up, like when Indy blew up the truck Marion was tied up in
- later revealed there was a switcheroo in the transports: Chewie and Marion are both safe
- cute pet monkey = Babu Frisk
- Rey takes Kylo's interceptor like how Indy stowed away on the Nazis' submarine
- Indy chases the armored convoy on horseback, Janna and Finn lead a horse charge on the star destroyer
- Palpy shoots lightning in the sky, like the Lost Ark when it is opened
One difference: Jar Jar Abrams' movie is a convoluted mess, lacking any of the spark or charm of the original Indiana Jones

Actually, it wasn’t days. The entire movie takes place over like 10 hours. Seriously. Palpatine at the start was like “you have 16 hours to surrender or die” at the beginning of the film. So the entire battle with a bajillion DEATH STAR DESTROYERS took less time than the galactic civil war or clone wars ever did

My fave character in Force Awakens was Finn. I remember all the promotion for the film centred mainly on him, only for them to pull the bait and switch at the en.
Really wanted Finn to be the new Jedi character and we get to follow his journey from being a stormtrooper, who gets redeemed by the end of the last film.
Never bothered with the last two films after they did him the dirty.

It's so frustrating that they took the most beloved franchise of all time and decided to rush 3 movies out for quick money without ever even having a plan on what they would be about. Daisy ridley said in an interview that half way through filming 9, they didn't know what the ending would be. Like what?!?! That's a bad sign for any movie, but such a high stakes film... they never should have been handed a speeding car without knowing what a steering wheel even is

Guy in the theater I was in had a seizure during the end of this movie. The longer I've had to think about it, the more I believe it was because of how horrible the movie was and not the flashing saber lights.

The fact an animated kid show from over 12 years ago is better written and has a better understanding of canon and rules of the universe than a multi million dollar trilogy and that a side character with blue markings on a helmet has more character and a personality
I find that when I point out bad filmmaking , from script to performances, directing and characters, people tell me I expect too much from a movie. Well, yes. I do. I’m a storyteller / filmmaker myself and I’m not as easily entertained as it appears most modern movie goers are these days. I don’t like the concept of “ here, im shoveling plot in your face by telling you what you’re supposed to be feeling. Eat it and accept it.”
Perfornances depend on the actors, visuals depend on the budget, but writing ... is totally free i have no tolerance for Lazy shitbox writing> if they dont have standards thats their fault
I don't think anyone really likes it. Still wish they made Jar Jar Binks the final villain. Would have been the most hype thing after all the theories and fan interactions with the idea. The pay off would have been huge.

I call it "cargo cult" writing. It's writing which can copy the forms, the general shapes of stories, without ever understanding the heart, soul or even working guts of what made the originals work.
Personally the sequel “trilogy” killed Star Wars with the first chapter which should be renamed to “the force went into an infinite coma and died a miserable wretched an humiliating death”

George Lucas originally wanted the sequels to be about Luke & Leias Kids trying to rebuild the Republic but having issues with establishing legitimacy and remnants of Palpatines followers trying to destroy the Republic.
Like a role reversal of the Originally Trilogy, but the rebels actually harm civilians and forcefully take over planets.

The only good thing out of this depressing mess is all the reviews and critiques, that at least give some enjoyment from this travesty. Ill never forgive them for what they've done to the legacy characters of Star Wars!!!

I like to refer to the Disney movies as "Fake Star Wars". It looks nice but it's like from a bad dream or an alternate reality, only it's *this* reality!
I agree with everything said about this film, it was completely unenjoyable to watch. I did like the Last Jedi more than the other two, despite its flaws.
The only thing missing from your excellent analysis is here the economic one. Studios make soulless movies like this bc they are without risk and are profitable. I held the same mentality until this year. The way I first experienced the story was by beating the Skywalker saga lol. I had to check out this movie to see if it was actually that bad and it is one of the worst I've ever seen

i was born in 1980 so, the prequels to me were the first Star wars i got to really get into. will admit that Spaceballs was my favourite movie when i was 14.. loving star wars then, seeing what Disney did was soul destroying. Ray in the first 2 movies, never trained and could do everything. i still do not know how she knew she could mind fluff people. when we got to the rise of skywalker, why have her training?? it made no sense to me, she was already the most powerful in the series ever. calling herself skywalker at the end was just sickening. she is and always will be a sith..

You know the thing i hate the most about the sequel trilogy is how many ideas they stole from the expanded universe stories. Rey is Jaina Solo, Kylo is Jacen Solo, they had a force link (cuz they were fuckin twins and it made sense) Dark Empire had Palpatine resurrected in a clone body, even Hux has similarities to Canor Jax. So not only do they recycle characters and scenes from the original trilogy, every "original" character from this trilogy is a bootleg version of EU characters. These movies offer absolutely NO new ideas.
i just wish so badly that they leaned fully into kylo's redemption arc and have him LIVE TO MAKE UP FOR HIS MISTAKES. people always say "he would be in mega jail for 1 billion years for the things he did how is that satisfying" LET HIM. IT WOULD BE A MEANINGFUL ACTION FOR HIM TO TAKE. im also kind of a reylo shipper but in a "there was so much potential but the execution was botched" way. he should redeem himself for HIMSELF and the galaxy, not because he's got a crush on Genderbent Galactic Jesus. the only bit of actually decent writing here is where in the force awakens he says to the vader helmet "i'll finish what you started" and then that got inverted into *ben* finishing what *anakin* started by saving his not-girlfriend, but they fucked around so much in between there and here that the character arc just made no sense based on the actions of everyone involved.

I just shut my brain off when watching these. The amount of scenes you showed which I had 0 memory of watching. I remember my girlfriend asking me what I thought of the last one when we walked out if the cinema, and I just said, I have no idea.

Starkiller in The Force Unleashed games had a much better scene using force on a spaceship. It takes both hands and a long sequence to pull a Star Destroyer that was flying in his direction to the ground.
Too bad he is not cannon. Love that character and those games.
