Union Pacific in-cab ride

- Thanks to a good friend, I got the opportunity to hop inside a Union Pacific locomotive type, C45ACCTE. The train went north along side the I-15 for the most part and continued north for 50 miles. The locomotive I was in was released in service in August 2011, it is a much newer one and apparently according to the crew inside, a much quieter one also.
For anyone who has any further issues with me posting this video, please know that I was invited to specifically film from the inside. Please note, I was invited to film inside and given full permission to upload this footage. The only thing I was asked NOT to do while in there, was not to film the control panels, which I did not see a reason to and clearly did not do.

Was a UP conductor out of Vegas. 32 years. Made that trip Vegas to Milford Utah so many times I lost count.
Lay offs just as often as everywhere else in the system? Used to work for UP north platte 4 but furloughed in nov 2010.
how many rail miles was that run?
247 miles
You go from Las Vegas to Milford going northbound.. what about going south bound? Is it Las Vegas to yermo or west Colton?
Vegas to yermo
I was a conductor for UP for 10 years. This brings back many memories.
likesanddislikesetc Why did you stop?
OTC Probably retired.
You retired after ten SHORT years?!
How did you do it? Where does one start?
me too
. i was fired over using a celphone while on duty
...gagn
I had the opportunity to ride on a freight train once. It still blows my mind how something that big can ride on rails that aren’t even that far apart. It felt like we were going to tip over the whole time
This is an absolutely cool video. This was the career that I wished I had pursued when I was a kid. I think it was just a childhood dream however. I would love to be allowed to just sit in the cab one of those locomotives to see what it is like. I wouldn't care what railroad it is that would let me do that. Just as long as I could do it. Just once.
Me to I always wanted to growing up then I started driving big trucks
It’s such an awesome feeling to sit in the engineer’s seat of a locomotive and blow the horn, you feel so powerful.
Here’s me blowing the horn:

Call UP and ask, they'll let you borowwow a locomotive if you have a valid California drivers license
For those of you wondering, this locomotive is actually UP 7482. You can catch a quick glimpse of the number at 14:40.
“Dispatch to UP 4589”
@@jordantherailfanner7506 Probably 4589 is on the other end and they swapped ends.
This would be the day of my dreams!
Hello from Canada. Thanks so much for this great video, really enjoyed it!
My father in law was railroad maintenance supervisor in northern Minnesota on the iron range. When I was back there vacation one summer he took myself and four of his grandkids and rode down the tracks on one of those hi rail trucks that go on the tracks. It was awesome.
Nice video, thanks! Must have been an experience to remember a lifetime.
That's an amazing ride!! Great video!
Very cool opportunity. Thank you so much for posting!
Need more videos like this! Enjoyed watching this one.
This 15 minutes is not just enough !!!! Great Vid!!
thanks for sharing,
I wish I even come close to this opportunity to do something like this in my life. I envy the railroad guys and gals! Often love watching them pass in Nebraska when I'm driving truck.
Those "railroad gals" are a big reason why guys can't get a job with them.
Nice little ride from Vegas to Moapa. That was one of my old runs from Vegas to Milford.
Awesome video man. THank you for posting.
Many Thanks sharing
Thanks for the fun ride.
lucky, that's one of my wishes to ride in a cab. great video
Thanks for posting this, I have a cousin that's retired engineer, looks a lot like this guy lol.
Very cool and very lucky!!!
that was awesome!!
As a retired conductor let me say, you guys need to get a life. There's nothing wrong with this video. As far as UP is concerned they are truly rail fan friendly. Enjoy the video boys!
This is amazing! Nice video
Lol, I stay at the plaza a lot, always watch the trains go by
I live about 3 miles from the Roseville marshaling yard in Citrus heights C,A and I get all the sounds. If the breeze blows in the right direction, they sound like their opperating 3 blocks from my house. We got snow throwers that head up to Truckee when conditions call for em. In and out of the yard 24/7 they run from North to south and all points between.
Rucus Rucus that’s awesome I live on church street in Roseville right across from the Roseville yard. Next to denios.
hi from denmark. it is a nice video. i like to see american trains.
That's Awesome you got a Cab Ride, I enjoyed watching and I Just Subscribed 😎👍
Great videos
AWESOME man
looks like Cajon pass up to victorville
I work for CSX and that's different for us but we still do that and your right Riograndefan... SO TRUE...
CSX How Tomorrow Moves also I saw that exact loco somewhere it was in Chicago if i am not mistaking
I love trains for many reasons. On a per ton of cargo transported, they are highly efficient and cheap compared to other land based methods. I also love diesel engines for which I believe all trains that carry cargo now have (correct me if I'm wrong). I also love the sounds of a train. I would love to go for a ride in one but have no idea how to go about it.
This s the first time I am seeing in the cab of U.P. Thaks!!!
I actually like these videos. The first one I saw was in Claremore Oklahoma where I live. We have two major train tracks that crisscross in town. You have one train track Going north to south and another East to West. Even though I know that isn't extremely rare it is in Oklahoma. Anyways someone did a video from inside the locomotive. It was cool.
Once a specific locomotive has been assigned primary status in a consist, that remains the locomotive used for communications purposes, no matter in which direction until that train arrives at its final destination.
Pretty humorous. It's a private train on UP, they can invite anyone they want into the cab. Since it is an Operation Lifesaver Corporate Passenger Train based on the verbage in the cab the whole goal in operating the train in the first place is public awareness of the program. The only item that might have been legally questionable is allowing the passenger at the controls and he is a jump seat in back. It's perfectly fine and isn't breaking any rules or laws. They probably wanted you to film to capture anyone going around the gates or other near misses to post on CZcams like you did here.
That's an awesome opportunity. I'm quite jealous.
...that was cool.
Cool video. You rock
If a news crew was on too, it was probably sanctioned by higher ups. Thanks for posting the video!
Wow, the conductor has a microphone that actually works. That last bit at the end about which applies to most Canadien locomotives. They are the best in class with amenities such as a microwave oven, hot plate with a coffee pot and a scant few even have a retractable wash basin like some CSX units.
BossSpringsteen69 all locomotives need that including a fridge
@@AwesomeDesertTrains Most if not all of the Canadian National units have actual plug in fridges. C.P. might have the same. Most class one railroads have ice boxes that you have to fill with ice.
At least you are in a quote locomotive boy down here in tx we got loud locomotive
Awesome video! Really great camera angles. But my main question is, why were you not permitted to film the controls? Anyone with Train Simulator would know what they were any way. So, what was the big deal? Again though, amazing video with great camera angles. Subscribed!
Dash 9 Railroad Productions b
very nice
interesting and nice video😇
I really enjoy this movie The Union Pacific house living along the CSX railroad Southeast Central Indiana Union Pacific Rose through our small town every now and then.
very nice video!! I would love to get a ride on one.
Excellent. Brazil
Good clip
Coolness
Nice video!
Great video cab ride I wish it's was longer than 15 minutes thanks for sharing
Nice Video
Nice.
They should bring back the Amtrak trains in Vegas and that station too
The cabin looks like Airbus A830 hahahahah
"don't film the controls?" whats that going to prevent? any train simulator on the market show how you control just about any locomotive ever made. Still a good video though :)
Controls? What the emergency brake valve and the horn that the conductors have.. and the side wall heater
No. I think its just something what you can see on left monitor.
@@johnnychacko631 ? The screen for PTC
I know the SD40 loco head to toe
@@lemkenation Couldn't be that because their are loads of pictures on google
i love this video. way to go 8081
Personally, I think it was a really cool video. If the officials sanctioned this documentary to be filmed while in-cab, then more power to ya,pal. Thanks for putting this up.
I always wanted to do this growing up lol
I don't know what UP calls it but it started out in Las Vegas heading northeast out past Apex and beyond.
The C45ACCTE is the unit behind UP 4539.
Dream job
Yes Andrew I'm a 35 year old engineer in Wyoming and yes that is the sound from inside the cab. And to the other guy yes...cab can be bumpy from the track joints but the camera makes it worse
what was the load this loco was pulling? i mean the # of coaches, loaded or empty
BTW, loved it
I love train
Just like a dispatcher always calling lol
Awesome vid! What loco is this?
I film trains all the time here in AZ, the crews only ask that you keep your distance from the train.
cool
Super
ok thanks
What portion of the system was that?
im guessing they said you couldnt capture the control panel? security reasons?
Best office in world
A real white knuckle ride :))
He was sitting in the student seat. I work for UP
Where does the conductor sit?
@@Jleed989 In front of the student seat
The engineer controls the entire train. He has the authority and the right to invite people into the cab as long as they do not touch any of the controls.
Thats exactly what I wanted to watch the Control Panels. Would of been so much fun watching like playing Playstation.
very nice, I followed along using google earth. Please more video.
👍👍👍LIKE👍👍👍
Wow it's that bumpy of a ride in the cabin?
+eltonq i thought so too, what is their railroad like!?
THey used to until 1997 when they cut the Desert Wind service.
Im ah big railfan out here and listen to the scanner on this Caliente sub- i here the omaha dispatcher only on 160.515- whats the channel to here the engineer?
what way were u heading and where was this at
I seen this train earlier in seguin texas today lol
Hector Medina nice I happen to live in luling
Looks like the train that passes by huh? Lol
was that the horn of the train actually sounded like from inside the cab, if so, really was expecting it to sound a heck of a lot louder than that......and I have always wondered what the difference is when the conductor is supposed to sound the horn and when the ring the bell, all that I know so far is that he is supposed to sound the horn before he comes to any railroad crossing.......
Andrew Silva theres not so bright people that complain about how loud the horn is and the railroad is forced to make some places on horn zones, also on the ES44AC to increase crew comfort 4 out of the 5 horns face backwards, but it still meets decibel level requirements at crossings (thats one of the things I dont like about GE)
almost feel asleep watching this...
How does one get to ride in the cab? I thought all that went by the wayside after 9/11.
Why grade crossing horn sequence at 3:15 ?
Cannot hold the camera more steadily?
Cab much quieter than the Amtrak cab I was in.
(I was required to wear earplugs, safety glasses and steel-toed shoes.)
the only people allowed on the cab is the crew or other crew members who are off duty and engine pulling to another location unless your invited which in that case the crew takes a risk because if you get injured its there asses. So its not illegal to be on rail property if given permission
If you look at 5:57 on the video you can see the radiator of the GE.
How many hours travel from las vegas to los angeles by union pacific? Thank you
Depends on the which train you get a hot shot z train could be there in about 10 to 15 hrs depending on traffic and the crew change at yermo
Has Amtrak goes by this line in Las Vegas?
same here
Personal electronics in use in the cab, ie. Video camera. I think both the Railroad and the FRA would frown.
DESPITE SOME NEGATIVE COMMENTS HERE,I ENJOYED TRAVELLING THROUGH YOUR COUNTRY VIA THESE TYPE OF VIDEO'S,I HAVE DONE SIMILAR HERE IN SOUTH AFRICA AND I HAVE ALSO FILMED FROM TUGBOATS AS WELL,THANKS FOR THE RIDE.
