Mitt Romney on today's Republican Party

  • The Utah Senator and one-time GOP presidential nominee today says he is no longer at home within a Republican Party dominated by Donald Trump. Mitt Romney talks with CBS News' Norah O'Donnell about why he feels a large portion of his party doesn't believe in the Constitution, and about his reaction to the violence of January 6. He also discusses the example set by his father, George Romney, a former governor of Michigan; and revelations from McKay Coppins' new biography, "Romney: A Reckoning."

I voted against Romney in 2012, and didn't agree with 80% of his politics. But, especially today, you can't help but to respect him. He, like all the other reasonable Republicans have either been forced out or are sick of the rot and decay of the party, and chose not to run again. This is a shame. He can still work with those he disagrees with and puts the country above his own self interests. Unlike 95% of today's GOP.

So much respect for Sen Romney. Like others, I didn't vote for him but I always respected him. I agreed with some of his ideals, and disagreed with others; his politics didn't resonate with me but that doesn't mean I didn't hear things I didn't like. I always felt he was dedicated to the United States in a holistic way. His voice has been an important one in American politics and values. He's a good man and he and his family are good people. I wish him well and will read his memoir. I hope his departure from politics does not mean his voice will also exit. I can tell him how I judge his legacy: a good man who contributed true commitment to the country, some great ideas and some not, but always a good man and good American. I wish I could say the same for as many other politicians.

That’s a joke. Most people I know voted for trump because he’s not a corrupt career politician wanting to do insider trading legally etc. All politicians are rich through corruption.
People voted for trump like throwing a wrench into a machine of gears hoping something breaks. Democrats wanted to shut down the west for instance and trump supported the economic use of public lands.
Mitt Romney a Mormon really doesn’t care. He’s fine with destroying most of utahs economy outside of big cities.
Trump supports being government but wake up! Each party doubles the deficit every eight years basically. I will say trump helped point out the issue with China. Chinas not a problem. The problem is the monetary system promotes rich people and offshoring jobs and hollowing out the e US. The military wrote a paper saying they’re reliant on China for inputs to fight China. Listen to luke gromen. The issue is the monetary system and inflation and ever bigger deficits or debt to promote credit creation so we can avoid a Great Depression if credit contraction happens. Which today we’ve had massive credit contraction just like the end of 1920s. I used to think politics controlled the economy. Obviously Biden being against oil makes sense why Saudi Arabia is being better friends with China. But the bigger economic problems seems like the president can’t really control those just try to postpone it.

Mitt Romney, like John McCain, is another one-time GOP presidential nominee who is just plain wrong on the issues but was of the Old Guard, a man who you could trust on character, to do know that he at least some idea of the ideals, principles and integrity that he was supposed to live up to.
Growing up in a military family, I thought I was a Republican, and despite attending one of those East Coast liberal elite colleges, I remained one. Until one day while listening to that buffoon Rush Limbaugh, I realized I wasn't.
Right up until the 90s you could expect House Republicans to be decently mannered. Right until Newt Gingrich happened. To me, he really set trend in motion for where the GOP stands today, a hollow caricature of itself. Adam Kinzinger and Liz Cheney were the last of the Old Guard House Republicans, as young as they were.
These remaining Republicans can't find two scruples to rub together among them and couldn't hold a candle to the old ones.

Our democracy is fragile but not for the reasons you likely think. It is the Left, which has gone insane and that is not hyperbole. The counter reaction is the populism and Trump. When Obama voiced seeking to fundamentally change the USA and then attempted to do that, therein was the genesis of the issue.
No one sought to overturn the Constitution on Jan 6. That is a foolish assertion. Also, Romney voting for impeachment, was so embarrassing and such a politically stupid thing to do. It was based upon hatred of Trump not the merits of the impeachment articles.
Romney thinks he is standing for principle, but he fails to look very deeply. He does not see where the actual threats lie. It is with identity politics, the denial of fundamental biological realities, institutionalizing racism and overtly flirting with Marxist-socialist economics. The country cannot stand if any of these succeed.

When Ted Kennedy was dying of brain cancer Democrats needed a Senator in Kennedy seat to help pass Obamacare. There was no time for a special election because that would take months. Unfortunately, he is not wrong. That is federal law as they are identified as such. It is a problem indeed, but what have dems done to change that? I'm an independent, but I'm also trying to gage your logic and rationale behind the dumb comment

@@marialewis6432 he owns Bain Capital. I'm OK with this. America has a greed problem for sure. I just don't see that changing anytime soon when everything we do is commoditized. We don't own any assets, everything is either rented or a subscription fee, etc. The business model has made it so that consumers always lose. He's not the guy that's going to change that pivot. DC has to do this collectively

I have been a Democrat and an Independent and I Remember a day when no one cared and no one asked. I knew things had changed when I mentioned Obama positively at a lunch and a woman in her 60’s at that lunch almost lost it. Her face actually turned red and her lips pursed and in that moment I knew there was a shift in the paradigm of our “United we stand divided we fall” patriotism. Look at us now, we are fractured and divided and a big part of us voted for a hateful, vindictive, racist, narcissistic. Thank you to the few: Mitt Romney, Jeff Flake, Lisa Chaney, Adam Kissinger and the late John McCain for being brave and honest and caring more about our democracy than genuflecting to a Sociopath!
