It's definitely an art or challenge growing things in this heat. I use a combination of watering early in the mornings at the crack of dawn as the sun in coming up (around 6:40am) and shade cloths on top of the arch tunnels made with cattle panels, and every other day I also spritz them down alittle as it's getting dark at 8:45pm. I'm in North Texas so I do feel your pain. I also can't imagine a frost right now...on my way to work at night, at 9:30pm, it's usually just a few degrees UNDER 100. Tonight it was 98° at 9:30. During the night last night when it got down to 92°, it felt so good....crazy talk isn't it....hahahah... welcome to Texas!

I grow these with soaker hose and gin trash on top down the sides for mulch. They grow like weeds. Oldtimers trick for freezing them if you don't want to blanch them. Just put them straight into a clean cotton pillow case after shelling, and then straight into the freezer. Don't wash them first. Wash them before you cook them.
You can use a long twist tie to close off the pillow case. If you use them within a year there is little starch development. Helps if your freezer is very cold. Also when first freezing take the bag out every 30 minutes for 3 times and shake them around so they don't stick together while freezing.

I 've done picked 9 bushels off of mine since last week. I only fertilize them when they get planted or they will make more vines than peas. We have been getting rain showers just about every day .Surprisingly they have not got the fungus or wasp stings on them. I had planted an acre of them early in the year but lost them due to the drought ,they wouldn't fill out.

You mention 100 degree temps and it being like a blow drier. Well for us living near the northern gulf coast of Florida we seldom reach 100, but it is humid for sure. You sweat and the sweat does not evaporate. Frosts do not occur here prior to well in November and sometimes not until we are well into December. For days now it has been raining everyday. The rainfall at the airport for the nearby Pensacola Airport is 45 inches so far and I think i got more in my location.

@@BIGALTX Finally now in august maybe the rain is letting up finally. For the next week the broadcast is 50-50, I saw a lot of freshly mowed lawns yesterday. That is what I did yesterday and will do some today if it stays dry.
I have not had to water an air layered Hicks mulberry that a friend sent me. I think it grew enough that it is now established. We normally average about 60 inches and 45 inch/year is a drought year for us. From mid august to about mid November is normally our dry period unless we get tropical storms. About every two days I am checking weatherungerground severe weather for hurricanes. So far there are none.

Any of the cream peas- zippers, cream 40's, have their own flavors. Even those are different in taste. But, no, they don't taste anything like an English type pea. Sugar Daddy's will only grow in a cool season. Don't quote me, but, I think it has to stay under 80ish for them to grow.
