BIG CHANGES COMING TO MY CONTAINER BLACKBERRY PROCESS
I'm making some big changes to my container blackberry process.
After 4 years of successfully raising blackberries in containers, I'm considering changing out my Wicking Tubs for EarthBoxes. I think the EarthBox would be just as good of an environment as the Wicking Tubs have been. So, what do you think, would I be crazy to make the swap?
Let me know your prs and cons in the comments below.
Stay safe!

    My ponkas are in food grade 55 gal drums cut to about two thirds height . They are very productive. You may want to consider a larger wicking tub for a few of your best poncas. For reproduction consider laying few of this years canes sideways on top of a separate wicking tub next to your blackberry tub.Cover with a few inches of soil and weight down with bricks till next spring growth. Each node has potential for rooting a new plant hence several plants from each stem .

      @@BIGALTX When I first started hydro some 12 years back, I purchased some 150 or so white sucralose containers, $2 a piece. I removed the tops which made them about 5-gallon containers, only they were durable plastic unlike the 5-gallon buckets everyone uses today. About 4 years after that, or 8 years or so ago, I figured they needed to be painted to keep sun/algae issue I saw (light penetration) from growing and to provide a barrier to help with UV deterioration, long term. I already had a leftover 5-gallon container of beige exterior pain I'd used to paint the vinyl siding on the back of my house. It was fading so I repainted it as suggested by my research at the time. That paint job still looks good after 8 years. Anyway, with the leftover paint, I decided to give it a go with the buckets. I did maybe 10 or 15 before I decided the beige was ugly and I decided to wrap them in silver bubble wrap. Mistake, but the point is that the beige ones still are there, looking good. No cracking or peeling of paint. I'm surprised with the paint. I mean, I don't use the buckets anymore, and even the white ones still are strong, but, like said, so are the beige painted ones. Moral of the story is that you might consider a can of exterior latex that can be used to paint plastic/vinyl. Do a bit of research on which one from Lowes/HD, and wash prep the containers before painting. I used a roller (yep), and a hand brush for quick work. I believe your issue is related to the durability of your bucket's processing method and deteriorate possibly due to UV exposure or simply heat. Might be worth a shot before buying all the earth boxes. What I would do based on your video is get rid of Ponca, paint their, as you put it, more durable containers a cool color of your choice, and plop the Freedoms in them UNLESS you just have the money for earthboxes. I do that too. Spent some $2000 on raised beds for this year and am loving 'em. Food for thought.

I’m so impressed with these berries. I’m up by the Oklahoma border. I had more blooms than I can tell you and they developed beautiful berries. We were picking every day. They are about 3 foot wide by 4 foot long and seven foot tall. They are the sweetest blackberry I have ever tasted. You should give them a try. I planing on starting more from cuttings. If you can get some empty PVM tubs made by Positive Feed in Sealy Texas, they are excellent heavy duty tubs that will last many years. I have some that are 20 years old. Also, Crystalyx mineral tubs are my second choice. I think you should go ahead and prune out your dead canes on your Poncas and hit them with some fertilizer. Not sure what you mean when you say they don't reproduce well. If they are healthy they will send up new canes.

    • @BIGALTX
      @BIGALTX Před 14 hodinami

    I have Poncas in long narrow raised beds. They handle the colder winters in NE Oklahoma just fine. They have been heavy producers but of larger fruit than you describe. Their output of new canes is approximately three per plant. Pruning the tops as you suggest, is the key to heavy fruit production. I use rainwater in my drip system and firmly believe that contributes to their success.

    I just took out my Prime Arc 45 thorn bushes this morning ,tired of getting stuck by the thorns especially when you take blood thinner ,bleed like a stuck hog. The berries were not that impressive. I have potted a bunch of Freedom and Poncas .Hope to get them in the ground later in the fall.

    I'm making some big changes to my container blackberry process. After 4 years of successfully raising blackberries in containers, I'm considering changing out my Wicking Tubs for EarthBoxes. I think the EarthBox would be just as good of an environment as the Wicking Tubs have been. So, what do you think... would I be crazy to make the swap? I’ve had to block off under the chicken coop because they like to lay under there. Now I have some laying on the dirt of their yard. It’s a pain! They have so many nice nesting boxes and they all choose 2 or 3 out of the 6. If the box is busy I have some rebels that do this dumb stuff.

    Ready to plant my blackberries in the Earth Boxes. My 5 Triple Crown plants have been growing in 3 gallon pots since last summer. Should I plant two of them per Earth Box, or only 1 per box since they are somewhat larger now?

    • @BIGALTX
      @BIGALTX Před dnem

      One plant per earth box is plenty. I planted two in a box, but only because I had two plants and just didn’t want to waste one of them. One plant will fill that box up pretty quick 😊

    How come you have your blackberries in containers? I assume they will be root bound very quickly. Please let me know

    • @BIGALTX
      @BIGALTX Před dnem

      I mainly started planting in containers because gophers tore up my blackberry patch. I had 700 feet of blackberries at one time in the ground. I really like growing them in containers because Gopher can’t bother them, weeds don’t encroach on them, and I can control where the new canes come up. They always come up in the container and not in the walkways or somewhere where I do not want them. As for being rootbound, I’m sure they were root bound after the first year, but I am on my fourth year and there’s no sign that it is a problem for them. If the container is big enough… These are about 20 gallons… I think it gives plenty of room for the blackberries to flourish.

    • @jamesh2215

    I received the 5 Earth Boxes to plant my Triple Crown blackberries in. They have been growing in 3 gallon pots since I potted them up from the 1-gallon pots they were shipped in when I received them last summer. My plan was to have one plant growing in each Earth Box. In your video you plant 2 in each one. Given the size of mine now (in 3-gallon pots), should I plant one or 2 in each Earth Box? Thank you.

      Once... then if she comes back into heat (estrus) it will have to be done again. Sometimes it takes the first time, sometimes not... depends on the cow.

    I planted 3 plants 3 yrs. ago in a raised bed. I have been cutting them to the ground in the winter. When I discovered your method of pruning, I cut them to about 40 inches this season and tied the prima canes to my wire support. I have lots of laterals and berries ready to ripen. I live in the southwestern area of VA. My question is, should I limit the number of primacanes coming from the original plants next year? They are quite vigorous and taking over the entire raised bed. I will probably need more supports, but should i thin?

    • @BIGALTX
      @BIGALTX Před dnem

      I never “thin”. I just prune the canes to keep them manageable.

    My hens won’t leave their perch. They leave the coop and go to the outside perch in the run or run to the patio and then perch on my patio chairs. They won’t eat or drink. They are 20 weeks old and are afraid of the roosters. I had one lay the first egg behind our grill. Help?? Nice nesting boxes in coop. They are constantly chased by the roosters. I have never had this happen before. Buff Orphingtons.

    • @BIGALTX
      @BIGALTX Před dnem

      You might want to change roosters. Sounds like he is extremely aggressive. You might want to try putting him outside the pen and letting him just fend for himself while they are inside the pen, getting used to it, laying in the boxes, and getting to know it as Home. Then, try introducing the rooster later. But I would wait several weeks probably. Or… Get another rooster. Maybe a young one that is not ready to breed yet.

    I planted some prime ark freedom blackberries in May and they got up to about 4 feet and I topped them. They are doing great, but I’m not getting any flower buds. Can I expect berries this fall or will I have to cut the second growth back or just let them grow?

    • @BIGALTX
      @BIGALTX Před 3 dny

      Since they are young, you may not get any berries this year. I would think you will… But just not sure. I would keep them at about 4 feet tall. Only prune anything that is actually dead. Next spring, you should get a good crop 😀
