Jack’s introduction was just joking at the historical contrast between classes.
He’s a posh boy from London, probably lived all his life in a 5 floored town house in Knightsbridge, never really had to work & has had a ridiculously expensive education.
Northern towns were usually where the government effectively shat on throughout history, whether it be in cotton mills or the coal mines, very working class, generally very poor, poorly educated, kids sent to work very early, multiple jobs, couldn’t afford any luxuries, lived in poverty & squalor, and as such crime, domestic violence, alcoholism, drug use, was all rife.
But yeah Jack had obviously never experienced any of that living with his brigade of servants in Chelsea 😂
The Y2K bug was basically "If we don't fix this, then all these terrible things could happen" and then a load of computer programmers went "Ok, we'd better fix that" and then they did, so nothing happened.
People say that we made a big deal out of nothing, but the reason that it was nothing is that we made a big deal out of it.

I was one of those guys doing patches on computers and telephone exchanges which meant nothing happened, if we hadn’t done the patches then, who know what would have happened

The worst to happen was U.S spy satellites malfunctioned and sent unreadable data, as a result of a patch they did that was supposed to save them from Y2K!!
Nothing happened on Y2K because we technicians and engineers reviewed our technology and fixed the coding errors. It was a concern for operations that referenced date and time for calculations. But the technical community combed through everything and fixed it ahead of time.

There was a whole series of adverts for the Renault Clio featuring the characters 'Nicole and Papa'. I think this was the final one where Vic and Bob cameoed in a spoof of the ending of 'The Graduate'

Mr Blobby actually started as a Candid Camera kind of prank thing; they would get celebrities in telling them this horrific thing was a really popular children's TV character, then he would just crash around like you saw. But obviously you can only do that prank so long before the celebs all know about it, so he soon just became a regular character and released a single.
IIRC Simon Cowell had something to do with the 'Mr Blobby' Song. Its a terrible song, but at the time I was just happy to see Take That prevented from getting the Christmas number 1 spot. Simon Cowell rebuilt his career in the 90's having success in the pop charts with TV novelty crossovers rather than actual musical acts.

If you ever want a good series to watch, Johnathan Creek starring Alan Davies, is very good. Murder, mystery and sometimes mayhem.
It was UK gladiators which was bigger than American gladiators.

I missed most of the 90's, working offshore. I came back to the UK to do my Captain Exams, the week Robbie Williams left Take That. Snogged the barmaid as she was so upset.

The Vic & Bob advert was a take on the 1967 movie “The Graduate”, with Bob playing Dustin Hoffman’s character, Ben; and “Nicole” playing the part of Elaine.
If you haven’t seen the movie then people like Mrs Robinson won’t make much sense to you, having said that; the advert if it was for a car didn’t make much sense anyway, as I’m pretty sure at the end of the movie Ben & Elaine eloped on a bus.
That car advert with Vic and Bob was sort of a running gag story. It was very well known in the UK.
I'm in my 40s and back at school one of my best fries was a boy from a posh family named Robert. I called him Bob on the first day and it stuck. Because of that commercial a posh boy from a well off family was called the working class name "Bob". I called him Bob at the age of 11, he was still known as Bob when we were 18. His parents hated me for ding that. lol.

Having watched the latest episode of Taskmaster, seeing Mr. Blobby seems quite apropos.
Oh my, I'm two episodes behind because I was waiting for my brother to watch together, but I'm intrigued now.

As someone who was in IT in 98 and 99, there was a LOT of work done to fix systems before 1/1/2000. We basically had carte blanche for hours and OT.

Mr Blobby started out on a TV show called Noel's House Party. There was a segment of that show where the host Noel Edmonds would stage a prank on a celebrity.
So Mr Bobby was set up as a fake children's TV show that a celebrity would co-host and then the kind of insanity you saw on this show would ensue to prank the celebrity.
The Mr Blobby segments were so popular at the time that Mr Blobby became a huge pop culture fad for about a year or so. Which of course was milked for every single bit of money it could possibly make.

The first time I watched this BFQ I was very tired and fell asleep somewhere in the middle of it. I woke up again just when Blobby came on, and thought I was having a stroke.
When they had "information mesh" in the question, it's pretty sketchy giving yourselves a point for missing "internet" and saying Google 😂

internet was the 60s, internet is kinda like the road system. HTML was 1992/3 which is like a new type of traffic on the road, world wide web was a description of the html links in webpages, and search engines which helped find these links came later.
Ghostwatch was madness. The people involved were all well trusted people from news and kids TV and they basically did a horror show they pretended was real and a live broadcast. Great fun, Blair witch found footage with people from children's TV.
There's another 2012 epsiode with James corden and Jack whitehall you guys need to watch
You should defo react to "Ghost Watch". It was a live broadcast show from one of the most haunted houses in England. It closely follows the Enfield Poltergeist which is the story told in 'The Conjuring 2'.
Watching it now-a-days it seems a little bit tame. But it was way ahead of it's time for scares.

y2k was not a big problem partly because a lot of people worked on it not being one.
Still the apocalyptical hype was a bit silly. But it was based on potential issues with computer technology, Not a ancient, mystical (and btw completely misinterpreted) Maya calendar....
Comparing that is a bit unfair, there was more substanc to y2k.

About 54:00, the Bob Mortimer ad seeems to be a parody of the weddding in the 1967 film “The Graduate”. That is all the information I have.

Y2K panicked everybody but those that knew it was a manufactured non-event. The very computing people it was all supposed to have worried.
I remember the switch from 89 to 90 and the systems that only used 1 digit for year. A days consulting and no problem. Then they pulled 99 to 2000 out of their hat and made out a plane in flight or a car cares what year it is... AND PEOPLE FELL FOR IT.
Nope, that's not true. Cars crashing and planes falling from the sky were made up by crackpots latching on to a very real computing issue. The 99 - 00 changeover was in fact a very real problem that required very real patching for computing. The reason it was a non event was purely BECAUSE of the work put in by engineers before the date hit, and using 89 - 90 as an example is completely unrelatable because the world had changed immeasurably in that time, and so had the technological landscape.

Only COBOL and the much older almost phased out languages even had an issue. The ONLY thing at risk was accounting and record keeping, dates of birth, sakes and historical financial information. Nothing realtime was dealing with a year, and for years after a simple 1900 offset was used.
Modern dares are stored as floating point numbers down to machine level. So in 8 bytes (8 characters) the full date and time can be stored. Microsoft and the of had it solved in the 90s, as did UNIX, Linux, SUN.

By the way they weren't engineers back then, they were central administration to most companies. You had internal whizz kids and you had external contractors that cost considerable sums.

Only the older languages that had the problem COBOL, LISP etc on the old mainframes and they were being replaced rapidly, the PC sorted it easy enough and the 3rd generation languages stored it numerically as a double float internally and in databases.
It was as much a marketing and economic ploy as it was ever an issue. Businesses wouldn't have written off a mainframe for years more due to its initial cost of purchase, but replacement costs had plummeted, so how do you encourage executives to make the decision. You plant a seed of uncertainty.
The antiquated mainframe is replaced with a mini computer far superior and it can do all the things government wants to do in accounting and payroll the mainframe would cost hundreds of thousands - in consulting and programming fees. Which businesses wouldn't sit still for.
The Bill gates effectively created a new industry in the 80s, and the whizz kids of the 80s and 90s suddenly cut out these huge organisations providing software support , at costs of tens of thousands of pounds to just change the year digit count.

The editing in this is weird. Some questions were edited so they were unfathomable, answers were edited in a way I didn't know if i'd got the answer correct- hell even the reaction conversation between you two guys was edited to the point I didn't know what you were talking about in the end! That's why he's "labelled a comedian", wether you like him or not. And i think he's great in panel shows like QI and of course Buzzcocks. And others. Like this one. So yes, he's apparently a very good comedian for quite a lot of people.
I find a lot of big names like Vic Reeves not very funny. But i leave my torch and pitchfork at home.
