    Tex Mex seem much more vintage than people give them credit for. In neck where it really matters, so similar to the beautiful 62. And obviously Dave is so unique in that he actually rides his pickups nice n low, brilliant. And I like a hot bridge. Tex Mex is outstanding. And the bass notes have a touch of warm but accurate resonance. Not too shrill

    wow i dont know why it took me over a month to finally find this one,..this is the bEST guitar video ive seen in ages ( i watched it like 17 times over and over)! Agree that the Tex Mex are the most magical as far as capturing the truest tone. However they all sounded great and had strengths and pluses when you take away the mandate to sound "vintage". You should work for Andertons,..LoL

    Another cool video. I think the Tex Mex wins by a huge margin.
    Interesting to include the Wilkinson’s- if they are the MVWS ( which I think came in that Vintage) I think that while they have a vintage wind, that big ceramic bar magnet pushes the inductance and output right up so they have that hot overwound 70s Strat sound. While it’s not a 60s round it’s a cool sound in its own right.
    I have both the Tex Mex and the Wilkinson’s and love them both.
    The Wilkinson’s need 500k pots all round and dropping really low to get the best out of them I think.

    This is a great vid and an awesome comparison. I get why some ppl say they can’t tell a difference bc with strats, I can’t for some reason. Gibsons and PAFs type humbuckers, I can tell the difference bc I play them all the time and I’m use to it. I barely play strats, so my ears aren’t finely tuned to them. I can definitely hear that one is darker than the other, but that’s about it for me. My world is gibson or tele and they sound pretty damn close. Strats are a different ball game. Thanks for sharing and it’s very eye opening for me.

  • @axemanand
    @axemanand Před 6 lety +1

    They all sound great! The original 62 has the most ‘open’ sound. The reissue is more compressed. The Oswald sounds open and beefy, a beef Tartine if you will, and the white relic is the warmest. The original 62 would be great with a Fuzz Face because of the clarity. You can obviously never have too many strats and this proves it!
    I have an American 62 reissue Strat with fender 57/62 pickups. They sound very close. I think it is the low output that gives them the 60s sound.

    Id be curious to see you add the squier classic vibe to that mix. Funny how everyone argues that the true vintage always sounds the best. I'm not disagreeing but I believe that statement isn't always accurate either. (I didn't use earphones), I think the SSL is closest to the original 62, then Tex Mex, and lastly Wilkinson.

    Many thanks for the video. If I am right, have seen that the White Vintage Thomas Blug icon v6 has a different pickup on the bridge. I think it a hot wilkinson.
    On the specifications say: Pickups: 3x Wilkinson single coil, aged ivory
    (N) WVS (M) WVSM rw/rp(B) WHCC ( this one on the bridge it is H from Hot, the other ones are V from Vintage, I suppose, on wilkinson ebay shop they are the only ones they sell for strat.)

    Very difficult, all good. The original 62 sounds best to my ears on clean, but the Wilkinson VS sounds great, powerful yet still vintage on OD if that makes sense. Also, the Mex 62, sounds lush clean but I suspect has a very low action and hence a kind of banjo quack to it ??

    I started to watch the video in the middle of the review, and I didn´t know that the black strat had original 62 pickups ... maybe that´s the reason for what I prefered Tex-mex and - especially -Duncans over the originals. All of us need a good blind test from time to time ...

    I thought the Wilkinson sounded like a beast.
    When I watched the first time I thought it was closest but on a second viewing I realize it’s very different but somehow hits something from the original that the others don’t.
    It’s like if the original was painted blue and red but guitars 2&3 were painted shades of blue but #4 was red, blue, and little bit black. There was something nasal to it but it had something the others didn’t that fit with the original.

    I think the TexMex sounded surprisingly good, but sometimes sounded harsh and didn't sound that great with distortion. The pickups in the black guitar sounded perfect. I have a set of SSL-1s with a Lindy Fralin 6% overwound in the bridge. I think the SSLs sound incredible in my strat, and John Frusciante's (uses SSLs) tone is the strat tone in my opinion. A lot of 70's records, especially from California, were made with strats with SSLs. They didn't sound that good in this video. As most people have pointed out, height adjustment on the SSLs drastically changes the sound.

    Excellent comparison video and I have to agree with you that the mexican reissue is closest.

    Unless you put Tex Mex pickups in the 60s classic - the pickups are stock Mexican wound to vintage spec pickups. Tex Mex come in classic Road Worn guitars not regular classic series. They are cheap but sound fantastic. I wonder how a proper steel tremolo block wound sound in the mex 60s. It should increase the fullness further and probably make the guitars sound closer.

      I'm still using SS. The amps are just MG's modded to look like Plexi's. : )

    I am recent convert of Tex-Mex pickups. They don't have all the nice cloth wire and there was still wax on one of the magnets, but damn, they do sure sound good!

    The white MIM sounded islets to you acknowledge guitar. The relic guitar sounded best of all with the OD pedal

    I agree, that the 62 Mex reissue was the closest to the original. The Oswald sounded more modern to me. Yes, the Vintage was the most different, but I liked the sound a lot. Dirty and bluesy. Amazing guitar. I have a strat with Leosounds Vintage Player Irish Tour pickups, which try to generate Rory's sound. It would like to know, how these would sound in comparison. Great video by the way.

    Hi Doz I enjoyed this video , a 500 K Pot would make quite a bit of difference on a single coil but the big question I have to ask you is where are you on curly leads for Strats ?

    • @thedavesimpson
      @thedavesimpson  Před rokem

      Some are good, some are bad. It depends. All the expensive coils cables I’ve bought have been awful. The cheap stag ones were always amazing.

    • @BazzyPredPop
      @BazzyPredPop Před rokem

      @@thedavesimpson I just got into one with a strat after reading about them on Mark Foley’s pick up site. Given Hendrix Rory and Stevie ray to put a lot of store in them and A curly lead seems to add something to the sound of a strat in a way it takes something away from a Les Paul or telecaster how about a little section of video on curly lead vs straight with different guitars if you haven’t done it already? Love your stuff
      And I know what you mean about cheap lead sounding better than expensive ones.

  • @rumbleish

    well wilkinson pickup ones are sounding more vintagy than the original vintage hahahha.. your oswal strat has treble bleed , tone it down just a bit. rest close enough.
