Another interesting fact is that Hawaii had no need for an Army Hawaii was and still is a neutral country like Sweden etc There are international laws protecting these countries from wars against them. In 1873 the alcoholic King Lunalilo disbanded his army in fear of revolt. In 1893 the Honolulu Rifles militia overthrew the Hawaiian Kingdom and formed a provisional government. Without an army, the Queen tried to surrender to the US. It didn't work and within 48 hours every government with a diplomatic presence in Hawaii recognized the provisional government. In 1894 it became the Republic of Hawaii.
