To the Nightwish Army/Family of Love,
I am not going to know all of the backstory and inside information about any of these video reactions until AFTER you see my reaction that's the point of a raw reaction I am discovering all of this without knowledge before hand so you all get to see my fresh thoughts to these experiences. ALL OF YOU are my guide through all of this.... and ALL of YOU are amazing... notice how every video I do there is another discovery? that is ALL OF YOU sharing what this band has shown you over the years.... I am grateful to All of YOU for showing me the story behind the story behind the performance LOL that's a lot of depth there..... THANK YOU ALL!!!!

But then we don’t get to see your reaction to the backstory, which is such a huge part of this song....
Either way, I love what you do and it’s your call 😊 But on this particular song I usually hope for a reaction to the backstory and the way it is reflected in the song, rather than a reaction to the song itself. Would be nice to hear your thoughts on it after you’ve been educated. Maybe do it one more time? 😀😇

Also i have no clue what reaction you really expect from that, should he cry like "nooooo ... how could he do that ... this asshole" and break down on the floor ? lol

Emppu is not actually giving shit to Tuomas, he actually went to check that he is doing alright, as this is very personal and deep song for Tuomas about one of the worst moments of his life. Other band members check on Tuomas through out this song too. Like Marko did at the ''Mother and Father'' part.
But Emppu has known to be the joker of the band make pranks for other people. It is always amazing to see how they enjoy their shows in a massive ways.
Personally this song is still one of the hardest to listen from Nightwish, as it reminds me about a dark point when loved one was lost. But in the same way as it is hard to listen, it is also very comforting in a way.
Time to give Marko a proper look with TAROT, am I right?

Interestingly, from the time the narrator says "now I only have three minutes and counting" to the point where the music stops and you hear the heartbeat - is exactly 3 minutes. You see Tuomas slice his hand across his throat. Such is the genius of his composing. And about never being too old - I'm 67 and only very recently discovered Nightwish. You're absolutely right - you're never too old to discover great music like this. I'm so grateful that I exist in a world that has these people in it for us mere mortals to enjoy and marvel at.

To understand the story you need to know the backstory.
Nightwish was started by Tuomas, Emppu, and Tarja, their first singer. In 2005, after the recording of the "End of an era" dvd Tarja was fired thru a letter given to her by Tuomas, but it was a band decision. The letter was also posted on the bands homepage at the same time. Marko had told Tuomas "It's me or her". This song is about the aftermath thru Tuomas eyes. A piece in five parts.
    1. White lands of Empathica.: Boy soprano (Guy Elliot). "The end, the songwriter's dead, the blade fell upon him" It's the end of an era, Tuomas feels dead inside, he was the one that handed Tarja the letter. The white lands of Emphatica is a place in Stephen Kings "Dark Tower" series.
    2. Home: "A poet without a rime, a widowed writer torn apart by the chains of hell" Tuomas got writers block, he's lost his musical "wife", his muse, and was fighting depression and doubt. "My home was there and then, those meadows of heaven. Adventure filled days one with every smiling face" The bands beginning, before the troubles started.
3 The Pacific: "On the shore, se sat and hoped under the same pale moon who's guiding light chose you, chose you all" If I remember it right Tuomas, Emppu, and Tarja was having a barbecue at night when they decided to start a band together. The operatic part Floor sings was originally sung by the same boy soprano who sings the intro. When Floor joined she told Tuomas that she could sing that. He decided to keep the intro but let Floor sing that part.
The spoken words are read by a boy named Tom Williams. Both him and Guy Elliot were members of Reigate St Mary's Choir School.
    4. Dark passion play: This is about the reactions from fans and media where everyone blamed Tuomas even tho it was a band decision. He was ripped apart, even the Finnish prime minister had an opinion.
    5. Mother and Father: Tuomas took refuge at his parents house for a while, these are some of the things they told him during that time.
Tuomas was inspired by the short story "The pit and the pendulum" by Edgar Allen Poe when he wrote this masterpiece.
The first words are "The end", the last words are "The beginning". It's the end of an era and the start of a new.
When you see Marko and Emppu close to Tuomas at the end it's a thing they have thet started when this song was new. Tuomas feelings where still raw so they supported him at the end of the song. Tuomas had chosen to have Anettes song cut out of the mix in his earpiece at the shows. This was 11 years after the events, so he's mostly over it now

A very good synopsis. One thing I have not heard elsewhere is your comment that Marco said it is me or her. Curious where you heard that - have not seen that before. The escalation is usually accredited to Tarja and her husband essentially saying she was the band, and creating other unreconcilable differences.

@@northof4912 both statements are true, while Tarja had already told the band she would do one more album and then she was leaving to pursue her solo career, the other band members felt that she thought she was bigger than the band, didn't need to turn up to rehearsals or travel with the band on tour, and Marcel's influencing her desicions on where she wanted the band to tour. Things came to a head when she was late or didn't turn up for sound check for the final show and Marko' patience finally snapped and he told the others guys its her or me. The desicion was made in Marko's favour.

I think he was dissociating himself from the idea that he had considered suicide. ('Dark Passion Play' contains this song, as well as others relating to that incident.) As a consumer of reaction videos, mostly - though not exclusively - Nightwish or Floor-related, there's an interesting condition that develops, I think, among NW fans. We watch reaction vids from a position that to me, seems akin to a parent watching their kid at a school musical. Or graduation. Or some other big event in which you're just so proud of the performance. It means something to you. And for everyone else, in this case the first time reactor, you want them to share in the pride and joy you're experiencing watching your "child." Nightwish is far from my "child", but the dedication to their awesomeness almost feels that way.
So when THIS Army recommends something, it's done pretty much from that position. And while most reactors like to go in cold to a new performance, with Nightwish, it's a little different. Sometimes knowing the backstory to a particular piece is really important to your experience. You don't know it, because you haven't seen it. But we do. We know it'll make your viewing experience so much better. This is one of those songs. GSOE is another.
That being said, I think you still got a lot from this. I would recommend going forward however, if you see similar "you should" comments, you should. Don't know how many of those existed in the recommendations for this one - I'd imagine there were at least a few since there always are - but if you see them in the future, give them some consideration. For your own sake.
Interesting tidbit most miss on this one: During the last speakover, the child makes a reference to "three minutes and counting." Do yourself a favor and timestamp that point, take note of the context of that statement, then see what Tuomas does, three minutes later. The little things that often go unnoticed make NW songs that much better.
Nice job. Enjoying your reactions. Finally subbed.

I tend to inform them early that it is not only best to wait and get acquainted to the different styles and musicians, but also research the story behind this particular song when the time comes. The best "reactions" to this one is like an hour long - telling the story as well as analyzing the lyric references.

  • @shuriken4852

I thought this was mentioned to you already, but the orchestration is not synthesized for the most part, Tuomas works with a co-arranger Pip Williams and they record all the instruments separately with the London Philharmonic orchestra & choir, so they can re-arrange them however they need for the live shows and play them back using numerous separate backup tracks through software(something like Ableton, Logic Pro or Pro Tools). I saw a featurette done when they were recording the album Endless Form Most Beautiful where Pip & Tuomas mention that, for The Greatest Show On Earth they had to record over 600 separate tracks and that the recording and mixing cost of the album was over half a million dollars, so apparently Nightwish does not mess around with their productions. 😀Also I would suggest to do some research on the background of this song's genesis, as it makes the listening much more emotionally satisfying.

This was written by Tuomas it was his loosely written about the Nightwish firing the first singer Tarja, whom Tuomas and Emppu grew up with, they were original members and I believe not only did Tuomas love her, but was in-love her. Afterwards Tuomas thought of suicide, so commits it during the song's performance. The song holds special meaning to the band, especially Tuomas, he gets emotional during the performance.

also worth to say that Tuomas has said he is an empath so all of the emotions others may feel were felt as though they were his own
Floor is a highly sensitive person and she was feeling everything and avoids eye contact with Tuomas A highly sensitive person (HSP) is someone who is thought to have an increased or deeper central nervous system sensitivity to physical, emotional, or social stimuli. i think she has also stated she is an empath as well makes this and every song that much more touching

As musicians they poured their feelings into their music. Yes, harsh & bitter, but Honest to how they felt at that time. I respect that Honesty & also their Acknowledgment that Now these belong in the past. I Don't Think They Should, (if they do), Feel Any "SHAME". True Artists bravely bare their souls to us. It was also cathartic for them. Now they have healed & moved on from that time. Thus, they've left the pain & anger behind, where it belongs, in the past, in the Album "Dark Passion Play".

I really like your reaction, because you don't listen to Nightwish's music any more - you feel it.
You feel the journey they bring you on, in the different songs, and that's perfect - the stories continues.
This one was a journey through Tuomas's depression - the deep lyrics, Floor's ability to color with despair, sorrow, love, intensity and more and more - the music describing the thoughts the same way from billions of thoughts, to more desperate, lonely and sad (cello often used for sadness).
And they hit you - and you felt it.
The Greatest Show on Earth, was a journey through the evolution - and that subject are returning in many of their newer songs - while The Poet and the Pendulum, kind of ended the period of sad thoughts. By the way - both Tuomas and Floor are very satisfied and happy with the way they managed to bring this song/journey through a depression - to life. It is a genuine masterpiece.
I think you have changed your mind about Nightwish just being a very good band with a great singer - into something deeper - you really dig that they are 6 phenomenal musicians, creating deeper journeys and experiences for you mind, soul and thoughts.
    I like you reactions 👍💪💪💪🤘🤘

Since this song is very emotional for Tuomas they very rarely play it live, so if you get to see it you should count yourself very fortunate. It is haunting and beautiful and you can almost feel the pain and anger in the beginning and the forgiveness and peace in the end. This is what makes Tuomas stand out among modern composers, in my mind. His way of evoking emotions with music with such ease. The fact that Floor seems unable to not put her emotions in the lyrics as well for a double whammy just makes it better :-))
I read somewhere that Floor is an empath so apparently she feels lyrics more than most of us, maybe that is why her expressions and voice are so emotive?

  • @nikolasmichaelides9444
    @nikolasmichaelides9444 Před 3 lety +62

A bit of backstory: After firing the first singer (and that was a very, very messy affair) Tuomas, the band's composer, got depressed (and attacked by the fans for some of his less-than-perfect choices) and was contemplating suicide. He decided to kill himself in the song in order to avoid doing it in real life. So this is us witnessing that.
It is based on an Edgar Allan Poe story called "The pit and the pendulum".
Also, the "dumb, fat, american with decent beard" description does not work. Your beard is not decent. :p :p
Regarding the stops: We have heard the song. If we want to listen to the song again, it is there in CZcams for us. We are not here for the song, we are here for your and your indecent beard's opinions. You have something to say that you feel is worth saying, stop the song and say it. If the stop placement is not right, simply rewind a few seconds and restart from there to avoid losing the flow.
A few trivia: Those are not synthesized cellos. Nightwish record with London Philharmonic Orchestra. The play with a backing track of them.
The child's voice says: "Now I have three minutes..." The axe drops exactly 3 minutes later.
The "Mother and Father" part are the words his mother told him to help him out of the depression.
The band rallies around Tuomas at the end to offer support. In the past, he was asking for the singing to be muted in his monitors as it was too much for him.
The story in the song is told in reverse order.
This band always respects its fans. At the end of each show, they do a deep bow to the audience. You would have seen this in the GSOE video if you had found the long version ;)
Nightwish do not only do long, orchestral pieces (like this one), they also do heavy metal, folk metal, industrial metal, and others. Each person loves a different aspect of the band a bit more, so the suggestions are going to be varied. I suggest you dip your toes in each genre to see what you like best yourself. You should also check out the past singers, but be warned: attempting a comparison will initiate a flame war to end all flame wars. Some NW fans are rather... opinionated when it comes to favourite singers for the band.
With love from a dumb, fat, decently bearded fellow IT professional :P

      >> If the stop placement is not right, simply rewind a few seconds and restart from there to avoid losing the flow.
THAT is really the only important thing in my opinon. One of the worst things that else could happen is for example when people listen to "Akin Ka Na Lang" from Morissette, make a pause in the middle of her 15s extreme belting without taking any breath, and just don't notice it, and that is one of the best things in the song beside the great whistle.

"The Poet and the Pendulum is the first song in Nightwish's 6th Album, Dark Passion Play. This song is one of Tuomas' most personal songs, dealing with Tarja Turunen leaving the band and his feelings of it. The song at its time was the longest Nightwish song in duration, and is now the second longest song only to The Greatest Show on Earth. Clocking at around 14 minutes. The song is divided into 5 sections, each with different themes and styles being applied: White Lands of Empathica, Home, Pacific, Dark Passion Play, and Mother and Father. There is a demo version by Marco Hietala, with even darker lyrics. "

Not to beat a dead horse but all of the orchestral parts are either a backing track of the recorded orchestra, or they are samples of the original orchestral recording that Tuomas is playing with his keyboard. There are times when you can see him hitting keys in time with certain instruments like the cellos.
The other thing that always impresses me about Floor is when she sings a part, as she does here, that was a recorded choir on the album. I don't point it out to diminish Annette (who was the singer on the record), but to emphasize yet again just how versatile Floor is vocally. There are very few singers who can switch between vocal techniques as often as she does during their live performances.

There are however hardcore fans to love to keep attributing this to showing his support (as well as the rallying at the end of the song) to Tuomas due to the history and nature of the song, but at this point Tuomas already stated in an interview in 2010 that he no longer was that person or being in that mental state.

Imagine if you will that you have to either fire a close friend or lose your band, that is the dilemma Tuomas was in in 2005, the resulting backlack managed to piss off the entire Nightwish army, all the love and passion we have for this band was turned against Tuomas in that anger, it drove him to despair and suicide was NOT out of the question, for him. He killed himself in this song instead, Most of the long time fans also use it to kill our anger and disappointment on how things went down, with Tarja leaving. Annette was not a good fit as a replacement, in my opinion and that did not help matters, Oh, that was not Jukka, he left the stage due to health issues, but asked his friend Kai, to replace him as drummer.

Really really awesome, the guy is a living metronome (and the rest of the band, a complete masters). Another little think, Tuomas is a regular lector (books devorator, in fact), is for this reason that the songs require documentation first, because the lyrics may not make sense sometimes for us (Example: Shoemaker, masterpiece if you know the backgrund).
