Hello Daniel [ @goodeveningstories ] ! Nightwish fan here, your musical quest summoned me.
Welcome to the world of symphonic metal! And thank you for checking this legendary band! This music video is from their 5th studio album "Once" (2004), then together with Tarja Turunen [pronounced Tar-rya], the 1st female singer of the band, and Marco Hietala, bassist and singer.
About the instrumental and vocal added parts - it's good to know they recorded their orchestral and vocal back tracks with prestigious institutions as London Philharmonic Orchestra. London's The Metro Voices choir group and London's Young Musicians Children's Choir as their regular partners.
Since this is your first Nightwish reaction, it is my duty to give you the [updated] short history of the band concentrated by Ann Waychoff, one of the biggest Nightwish fan who has since passed away (and I am doing this in her memory):
" Nightwish was started in 1996.They are considered a Symphonic Metal band, with a female main singer. They are from Finland.
Tuomas Holopainen [pronounced Tuo-mas], the keyboard player, composes and writes the lyrics for 95% of their music. [Sami Vanska was the bassist of the band starting with their 2nd studio album, he was with them until 2001. Then Marco Hietala was bassist and vocals, since 2001 to 2020. He recently announced his retirement both from the band and the public life for the next year at least. Then in May 2021 Jukka Koskinen [pronounced Yukka] became the bassist of the band, for the Human :II: Nature tour - and recently, the band announced he became a permanent member] And there is the guitarist Emppu Vuorinen [he also recorded the bass lines for their 1st studio album]. Then there is Troy Donockley from UK who is a multi-instrumentalist and vocals. Jukka Nevalainen [pronounced Yukka] is the drummer. In 2015 due to Jukka's health issues Kai Hahto became the drummer and as of now is a permanent addition.
Nightwish has had three singers. 1st one was Tarja Turunen [pronounced Tarr-ya] (Operatic vocals) - you just heard her. She was with them until 2005. The 2nd one was Anette Olzon from Sweden (Poppy, strong vocals). She was with them until 2012.The 3rd and current singer is Floor Jansen, from Netherlands (power, operatic, soprano.....most versatile).
There are live concerts that you should use depending on what era. From Wishes to Eternity and End of an Era (Tarja), Montreux Festival live 2012 and Exit Festival (Anette), Live at Wacken 2013, Live at Wembley, Live at Tampere, Vehicle of Spirit, Decades live (Floor). I hope this helps.
I want to welcome you to the Nightwish community. I hope you like them enough to continue the journey. Believe me Nightwish will surprise you with their songs. You will never know what to expect. They are unbelievable live. I want to warn you that Nightwish fans are hard core. So be prepared. lol "

Our Tarja ❣ She is classically trained, when she was in her early 20s she had this very dramatic, darker classical sound, then in her mid to late 20s she "corrected" it to bring the sound more forward. She said in the beginning she had to figure out how to sing this genre without sounding like a "frog in a booth" 😂 She's a bit of a pioneer for symphonic metal, as is Tuomas, the songwriter. She has had quite the vocal journey and I find it so intriguing when experts analyse what she is doing, thank you for that!
Wishmaster - End of an Era is probably one of _the_ songs that represents the first era and that show why Tarja was the g.o.a.t. of this particular sound. Thank you for the reaction! :)

I love that you said you love how her vibrato matched the electric guitar because I've been yelling about how her vibrato perfectly matches the drums in their live performance of Phantom of the Opera during the climax. She's just so ❣❣ legend

Thank for your joyous, lovely reaction! This is Tarja Turunen, their first vocalist, classically trained opera singer. Her pronunciation is VERY Finnish, hence the clear consonants and all that. I am not a Nightwish expert to give song recommendations, but if you want to hear songs where Tarja's extremely beautiful, crystal clear opera voice really comes up, I'd recommend Nightwish songs Kuolema Tekee Taiteilijan, Ever Dream, Nemo... And I am sure there'll be tons of recommendations for songs with their current vocalist Floor, so I'll leave it to them. Although, I want to mention that the bass player, Marko Hietala, and Tarja has a gorgeous duet where you can enjoy how well their voices blend together: The Phantom of the Opera. It is said even Sir Lloyd Webber himself loved that performance.

Thank you!! This was a very interesting reaction! Although, this was not Floor, this was Tarja Turunen. Floor is their current singer and Tarja was their original singer.
I am glad you liked this!
Nightwish is truly amazing! They were founded in 1996. On this video you can see Tuomas Holopainen (the keyboardist and the mastermind behind the compositions and the lyrics of their songs), Emppu Vuorinen (the guitarist), Marko Hietala (the male vocalist and the basist), Jukka Koskinen (the drummer) and Tarja Turunen (the lead vocalist).
Tarja left in 2005 and began her solo career. She is still doing that and releasing new albums. Her voice has grown even more. After Tarja, Anette Olzon became the lead singer for awhile. In 2013 Anette left and Floor joined Nightwish. They are soon releasing a new album called Yesterwynde.
Part of the reasons behind Tarja's pronounciation choices, is her Finnish accent... It's very present. And Tarja is classically trained in lied singing.
I hope you continue reacting to Nightwish. They are great in the studio but the best versions are live versions. With Tarja in Nightwish I recommend a song called Slaying the Dreamer (live from End of an Era, 2005). If you want to hear Floor, do Ghost Love Score live from Wacken 2013. That's just legendary.

I agree that it was a weird choice to start a Nightwish journey with a music video, not a live and with this song. I agree with the recommendation of slaying the dreamer from End of Era concert, the legendary phantom of the opera from that same concert or deep silence complete from the Wishes to Eternity concert. I also suggest you look into Tarja's very diverse solo career - victim of ritual, innocence, or song to the moon for instance

As you've already read, that's Tarja Turunen, the first singer (I love her voice) and not Floor. You should definitely check out NIGHTWISH - “The Phantom Of The Opera” live from the "End Of An Era" concert with Tarja and Marco, for me it's the best version I've ever heard.

  • @user-rs1ym3ho6k

Before you go off to hear Floor, listen to Tarja and Marko sing their cover of The Phantom of the Opera, a true metal classic from their 2005 End of an Era concert, that shows off Tarja's operatic chops. Then, listen to Floor in Ghost Love Score, from the legendary 2013 Wacken concert in Germany. There you also get the symphonic layer beneath that Tuomas composed and had the London Philharmonic Orchestra and the London Metro Voices play. That is a vital part of Nightwish's signature symphonic sound.

  • @melicriszoe1
    @melicriszoe1 Před měsícem +8

She is Tarja Turunen and she has classical training, she studied at a university in Germany. This song is not pure symphonic metal and you cannot appreciate Tarja's true voice. For this I recommend The Phantom of the Opera or Slaying the Dreamer or Planet Hell from the show end of an era (2005). or something from Tarja's solo career like Ciaran's well, she makes a beautiful staccato at the end czcams.com/video/2Hl2ibaUvcQ/video.htmlsi=1TdAI_2BVxMUU_kk (munuto 45:40) and if you want to hear Tarja sing an aria I recommend mein Herr Marquis. There are so many comments about Tarja’s voice, which are deserved, but this is really Marko’s song. After Tarja, he did it with Floor, but after he left, they no longer do this song. Why? Because no one can equal his voice.
Sorry to edit my comment again, but I forgot something. Now that you’ve heard Marko’s “hard” voice, consider listening to one of his “soft” voice Nightwish songs. The Islander or While Your Lips are Still Red are both excellent. ❤

To err is human, to forgive is divine. Even though I'm not divine, you can be forgiven for confusing Floor with Tarja (as long as you never compare Floor Jansen with Amy Lee 😉).
However, the voices of these two great Nightwish singers could be described as divine. As a Nightwish fan from the very beginning (am I really that old?), I've enjoyed every era of the band with their very different singers. And with Floor adding a new level of vocal variability to the Nightwish songs, I can also experience their old and long heard songs anew. Anyone who doesn't appreciate that and instead is constantly preoccupied with who is or was the better singer is missing out on the best things in life because they are emotionally stuck somewhere in the past.
Great reaction and analysis. I like how you show your enthusiasm and excitement. Subscribed!

Thank you for your interesting and happy reaction! It made me smile and also realise new things. (I appreciate all the comments about Tarja's pronounciation - as a Finn I don't hear what is "odd" in it, it just sounds comfortable and easy to understand.)
If you are going to react more Nightwish (it would be great to get your insight), you will see live performances with Floor will get more views, and that is understandable because a) they are great and b) the sound quality is better than in live performances with Tarja. Anyway, there is a limit how much one person can react or digest music videos overall. But here is my tips anyway:
    1) Every song Floor sings in Wacken concert is written to previous singers. Floor performs those songs beautifully, but Tuomas Holopainen, the composer, is really good in catching the essence (or how you would call it) and fortes of each voice. So the style of his songs for Tarja is different than it is to Anette or Floor. So if you react a Wacken concert song and like it and have some extra time, you might enjoy listening the studio version with an original singer (without doing any reaction of it).
    2) I love and appreciate equally all three lead singers and their style. For me the most _interesting_ is early NIghtwish with Tarja, as there is this fascinating contrast with her voice and heavy music. And the songs are kind of bonkers and fantasy-like. Most of my _favourite_ songs are from the two later eras. It feels the compositions become more mature album by album and to me it makes easier to listen to them. Anyway. If you find time for Nightwish, you might find this evolution of the style interesting.

The wovel in "burning" lends heavily to Finnish ö, so it might be just her accent showing through.

Interesting first reaction. This is not Floor, for one. I’ve never heard anyone start out with this song first. Second, especially for the specific feature of classical or opera singing. I would have recommended Phantom of the Opera, Wishmaster, Stargazers, or Sleeping Sun for Tarja for that perspective, or Stargazers Live, Sleeping Sun Live, or Shoemaker for Floor. Also this music video also cracks me up every time with the interesting eye contact from both Tarja and Marko. Glad you like it though 😂

Tarja Turunen is a classically trained lyrical soprano. She studied both in Finland and in Germany and is the very reason Nightwish exists as we know it. Tarja has said, that in order to make her classical voice work with the metal band and music, she had to adjust it by a lot. If you listen to songs from their earlier era and compere it to their last concert from 2005, you`ll hear the difference. Please react to Phantom of The Opera from the End of an era concert and also Slaying the dreamer from the same concert.
To really learn who she is as an artist, I would like to recommend Vilja Lied and Pie Jesu and Ave Maria by Paolo Tosti from her 2015 album, En Plein Air full of Ave Maria`s from different composers. She even composed one herself, it is very beautiful.
After Tarja, there was another singer before Floor, Anette Olson. It would be worth checking Nigthwish with all of them.

Interesting reaction and analysis. :) As some people already said, this female vocalist is Tarja Turunen, first singer of Nightwish. But wow, you're first person I see who said that Tarja's pronunciation is clean and you can understand what she's singing, that's great! Most people saying that they can't understand her at all and even saying that she's bad in english, but she's fluent in this language...
I know that probably no one else will recommend it, so I don't know if you react to it, but... There is amazing japanese singer Kokia, she is classically and operatically trained, but it's not her main vocal technique to use, but there is amazing song "Il Mare Dei Suoni" where she using more classical/operatic technique and I'm really curious what you could say about her vocal. There is amazing live performance from History concert tour 2012, so please react to that one. Kokia don't have many music video, only some from the first few years of her career (and she started in 1998), but for her live performances are the most important part of music and she's incredible live. I also really recommend song "Gematria" from Layers ~Lights and Shadows~ concert 2016, completely different that frevious one, she's using there different vocals and techniques. I hope you can react to Kokia, I really want to hear your opinion and also want more people hear her music, she deserves it.
From japanese music, which I love, I want to recommend also symphonic speed metal band 摩天楼オペラ (Matenrou Opera) and their song 喝采と激情のグロリア (Kassai to Gekijou no Gloria) live video from their 16th anniversary concert, if you type "摩天楼オペラ 喝采と激情のグロリア live video" you will find it, it's on their official channel. They have male vocalist, but I'm really curious what you would say about his vocal, he has very strong vibrato, I think it can be interesting for you to listen. :) Btw, some parts of lyrics in this song are in english but because of japanese pronunciation for most japanese people english pronunciation is very difficult, so it's not always sounds good, sometimes it's even hard to say that it's english... But bands using english in their songs sometimes and I personally think it's ok and not clean pronunciation don't bother me, I hope it also won't be any problem for you. ;)

Inspired to hear your take on Nightwish. I find their music quite interesting. Sadly, I am only able to listen to metal music with the sound muted down to almost nothing; and, hence, find it not worth the pain to listen. Thank you for another interesting reaction and analysis.

    Hi Daniel,
Since many of the NW army will have already suggested you numerous songs from their latest era with Floor (who is awesome by the way), I will take the courage to suggest some of their early era with Tarja:
    So from the End of an Era tour;
    Planet Hell (another great harmony between Marco's & Tarja's voices - czcams.com/video/yswh14JISQs/video.html )
Ever Dream (eventhough Floor really nails it, especially at the end, for me Tarja's version is more...sentimental because of all the aftermath - czcams.com/video/1p29LcuuvgQ/video.html )
The Kinslayer (referring to the Columbine High School massacre - czcams.com/video/f3aM0XjYdBA/video.html )
    The Siren ( czcams.com/video/LUy8T_3kieI/video.html )
Slaying the Dreamer (my favourite version PERKELEEE! - czcams.com/video/tFSqaLKXzwY/video.html )
Creek Mary’s Blood ft. John Two-Hawks (taken from Dee Brown’s book czcams.com/video/ovZxa7KYRu0/video.html )
From Wishes to Eternity tour; (here you'll hear a more classical Tarja, no Marco though ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ - full concert here - czcams.com/video/U-n8q8IBbbM/video.html )
Pharaoh Sails to Orion (ft. Tapio Wilska for some low and dark voice - czcams.com/video/JsAi3_tT0yk/video.html )
Crimson Tide / Deep Blue Sea (instrumental, Tuomas' love for film music, a medley, "Crimson Tide, Deep Blue Sea", which borrowed melodies from Hans Zimmer's music in the 1995 film Crimson Tide and Trevor Rabin's music in the 1999 film Deep Blue Sea - czcams.com/video/h93Y5Pq2kKo/video.html )
Fantasmic ( watch Tuomas like never before - czcams.com/video/tTWVogCOCCI/video.html )
Beauty and the Beast (ft. Tonny Kakko from Sonata Arctica - czcams.com/video/IHFYf_lpKT8/video.html ) Walking in the Air (a great ballad - czcams.com/video/rwBg8AX6prc/video.html )
Last but not least, from Century Child album, Beauty OF the Beast (as said by many, it's Ghost Love Score before Ghost Love Score existed - czcams.com/video/X3WrCzLIIvk/video.html )
    From her solo career;
    I Walk Alone ( czcams.com/video/wbeQVzXvtok/video.html )
    Oasis ( czcams.com/video/coL6_C9JdFY/video.html )
    Until My Last Breat ( czcams.com/video/G-i4wUTtkZc/video.html )
    I Feel Immortal ( czcams.com/video/ko4Cp0Yjggc/video.html )
Innocence ( a great video about domestic violence - czcams.com/video/6yYccQ0S1yI/video.html ) as well as a great live version of it ( czcams.com/video/Lq-genEQNLA/video.html )
    Eagle Eye ( czcams.com/video/j6GxSphwb2Y/video.html )
    Supremacy (a Muse cover - czcams.com/video/e5zEb5xFlIE/video.html )
    No Bitter End (official video - czcams.com/video/dqZs-DFtx9g/video.html ) ( live version - czcams.com/video/Gclnq4dcUok/video.html )
    Shadow Play ( czcams.com/video/dZwkRRunp1A/video.html )
    O Come, O Come, Emmanuel ( a dark Christmas reaction maybe? - czcams.com/video/lwloz95Ubyk/video.html )
And finally, a collaboration with Within Temptation (another great band you must hear) Paradise (What About Us?) (live version - czcams.com/video/8vsKQTfxf80/video.html) (VR live [due to COVID] czcams.com/video/eseI4O2-uZA/video.html )
And last but not least, the latest collaboration with Marko
    Left on Mars (czcams.com/video/1TgQOj3rwzE/video.html)

I would say "The blend". And yes that appeals to both Operasingers/operalovers/Tarjafans and also Floorfans (Myself included).
I know i'm doing this a bit to easy right now, maybe even a bit disrespectful....but i will be honest, after a night out, coming home having a glas of redwine and thinking abpit sleeping...yeah..think i should..💯❤️

Unlucky choice for the first song (no real symphonic element). Though I do not think that the almost universal 1st song "Ghost Love Score" provides an idea. "Nightwish" is so versatile. Maybe try "Planet hell", the video with singer in bright yellow jacket. Official live is sung by thee 2nd singer Anette, that is not appreciated enough (and she is not classically trained), as to Floor - there are many videos, yet this song is about interaction.

And then there is "The Poet and the Pendulum" - you should get an idea about the abilities of the main songwriter, and, when you are ready, start with the demo version of this song written for Marko alone, it was followed by the Album with Anette and choir boys, and then there is a video from a Wembley show and less choir boys.

    Wow, your reaction was annoying.
You always jump in without doing any research?
The yapping about someone who was not even in the band at that time is for me just as infuriating as them kicking Tarja out of the band which was the reason for me to stop listening to anything they made after.
Yeah, ugly Floor is not a terrible singer but she's no Tarja, not by a long shot!

When I listen to music, especially when reacting, I like experiencing music without much context. It ensures I don't form any particular bias about the artist that precedes their music / my first-time listening experience. I hear your acrimony, and I appreciate you taking the time to watch the video and comment your thoughts =)

@Rudi_Wolff: Probably the best decision you made was to stop listening to Nightwish after the band split up with Tarja. Because anyone who is so narrow-minded, intolerant, selfish and both mentally and emotionally inflexible that they can't deal with changes in life and decisions made by others should definitely not be listening to Nightwish. Someone with such a questionable attitude is the exact opposite of what Nightwish embodies and will never be able to even come close to understanding the messages of Tuomas' lyrics. Good luck in your life as an old man, no matter how old you actually are, because “you are old when you enjoy the past more than the future” (John Knittel).
