I think most of Annette's songs are blocked in the US because of its orginal copyright and may have to do with her departure from the band. Everything from the Anette Era has been extremely hard to get posted unless it was performed by Floor or Marko ie (poet, storytime,M.P.G., etc). Also the best selling albums were from the Anette Era both Dark Passion Play and Imagenarium.

Tuomas in 2007: It’s a very personal song, about the uppermost self hate and self disgust you can feel. The feeling that you’ll never stop doing wrong things in your life. I like the whole concept of The Poet And The Pendulum. It's related to Edgar Allen Poe's Pit And The Pendulum and I put myself onto the altar with the swaying pendulum on top of me. I really got the shivers when I thought that yes, this idea can work. The Poet And The Pendulum, there's that word play but also it had alot of symbolism because of what happened a few years ago. I felt like I was beneath this swinging blade and that it was going to come down any minute now and split me in half. I was really excited with the whole metaphor and symbolism of that. That is still my greatest achievement in music so far I think. I actually got the idea to put myself into that song, there's actually the word Tuomas in the song, from The Dark Tower series. Stephen King wrote himself into Song Of Susannah and when I read that I thought, "This is so cool, I have to do this with Nightwish." It's such a wonderful idea and it's so crazy that it really worked. It was a bit of a rip off but that's where I got the idea.

The slice was at three minutes after "three minutes and counting". Tuomas symbolically unalived himself so he wouldn't do it for real.....which we are infinitely grateful he didn't. Lovely reaction! Glad to see that your research paid off and that you really connected to this song. This is Tuomas's most personal and emotional song. It is also very personal and emotional for most fans. He wrote this song as way of expressing and exploring all of the emotions of his depression and grief. Remember that Tuomas often uses the poet in his lyrics to reference himself and yes, he does have a great affinity for the ocean. He sees it as a place of refugee.
The White Lands of Empathica are from Steven King's Dart Tower series (Tuomas is a big fan). The White Lands of Empathica are a snowy tundra where there are emotional vampires who live off the emotions of others.
The song starts with "The End" signifying the end of the first version of Nightwish. It ends with "The Beginning" signifying the start of a new version of Nightwish.
Home in the first section I thinks represents that desire for a depressed person to find a place of refuge and safety. Home for many of us is just that.
One last perfect verse but still the same old song." For me this is Tuomas saying I have nothing new to write for my so called fans, which is like death for a poet like him.
You got the part in the Pacific where Floor sings "Tuck me in beneath the Blue" meaning a return to the Ocean. The previous verse "The Ever Free" lets us know that the Ocean represents peace, freedom, and beauty. All things he is seeking to get away from the pain of his real life.
" A thousand pages of erased text" represents all the songs that Tuomas would have wrote for Tarja but now would never be heard.
At the three minute mark from the "I have three minutes and countig" the blade falls (Tuomas making the slashing motion across his neck). The heart beat slows and finally stops mid beat. The original version of Nightwish is dead. The last part of the song, Mother and Father, gets me every time. The lyrics are actual words spoken by his parents during the depths of his depression. Floor perfectly channeling the anguish of a mother who has lost her child. Then the words, In the Beginning, signaling the birth of a new version of Nightwish.
I know I have said it in previous comments but it bears repeating, highly recommend you read the analysis of this song by the artist Annike Hausen. IMO it is a brilliant, master's level analysis and I think you would really enjoy it. I would provide a link but every time I do the YT algorithms delete my comment. Just google her name and Poet and the Pendulum. ".
For me this is Nightwish's greatest song. Their Magnum Opus. Tuomas pouring out his heart and anguish in the music and lyrics. Floor perfectly channeling the anger and pain. It fills me with emotion and lets me connect to Tuomas in a profound way. This song is no longer performed live. Tuomas has said they (him, Empuu, and at the time Marko) are not those people anymore and they have moved on. Performing it just takes Tuomas back to that difficult place emotionally. Emppu and Marko come over and check in on Tuomas through out the song to make sure he is ok emotionally. Tuomas often would have the sound engineers turn off the vocal feed in his in ears because it would make him too emotional. I am so grateful that he chose to write this song and share this part of himself with us. Everything about this song and performance is about making us feel his emotions.
    Great job!

    @athlonen Před 4 dny +13

First, to your question about pendulums and Dark Passion Play. This song is the first on Dark Passion Play, so Tuomas let’s his response out to the fans right at the start. Second, the White Lands of Empathica refers to a place in the Darkover Novel series, by Stephen King. As for the format of the song, keep in mind that this song starts at the end.. literally. Tuomas is dead. Then you go through everything in retrospect, starting with letting Tarja go (hence, the widowed writer). He tries writing a song, but it sounds like the old Nightwish, with Tarja; but she’s gone, and he hates what he had to do, but it had to be done.
With the 3 minutes, you caught it well. The blades kept lowering, just like in the Pit and the Pendulum, killing the person. In this case, Tuomas wrote in and composed his own death in 3 minutes, including his own eulogy. Only the words of his parents kept him going and that he could find new things to be his muse instead of a person.. hence, the dawning of a new Nightwish… The Beginning.

You did extremely well! Most people don't do the research and miss SO much. It's so refreshing to see a good reaction to this song. The NW army protects this song because it's about our beloved Tuomas. It also affects us as much. When It is poorly reacted to, we often feel let down. Yes, new drummer Kai (chosen replacement by former drummer Jukka). At the end you see the band members of 2005 that are still on stage (Jukka couldn't be drummer anymore, so he runs administrative tasks for the band). Anette was in a custody hear before she was fired and lost on the day of a gig. Between being upset over her loss, she got increasingly emotional while singing this song. About halfway through, she lost it and ran crying from the stage. Yes to the blade being on the Dark Passion Play album cover. The blade would later be used on another song where it hadn't been used before. There's a Tarja era song called "Slaying the Dreamer". In 2018 in Buenos Aires, NW had Floor sing the song and it was *awesome!* - I love Tarja for various reasons (I loved "Nightquest" with her voice because it sounded especially fantasy). I've heard this song so many times that I've lost count. I cry every time.

Hi, Lanae. Beautiful and emotional reaction. It was the first reaction I saw this morning, the others had to wait, because I had to run to work. This is the reason why I have not commented until now.
You went through the band's darkest period in the last few days, which almost destroyed them. Looking back, with the experience of another age, I am more and more convinced that the band members had to keep the breakup with Tarja private, even if they felt entitled to fire her. I saw a short recent interview with Marco, who reunited with Tarja in 2024 and they did a short tour in Europe together. Tarja was forced to rebuild her career in Argentina, her husband's homeland, because of this media scandal in 2005. As you can understand of course from this performance, it was not easy for the band either. All these negative consequences could be avoided with a little discretion.

When the rest of the band joins Tuomas in the end, it also means that Floor remains absolutely alone on stage. Just when she sings her mourning notes. The suffering of a mother after the suicide of her child. (just my take on this)

My no 1 song. A masterpiece.
    Accumulated notes follow...
This is a 5-part journey through the emotional turmoil following Tarja's departure.
As the founder and guiding light of the band, Tuomas' took much of the flak from those who claimed to be Nightwish fans but we're actually obsessed with Tarja and thought she WAS Nightwish - an idea that the subsequent growth and improvement of the band comprehensively demolished.
Indeed there are still people today who call the "Tarjawish" in some vain attempt to make Tarja something she wasn't. (Don't get me wrong, Tarja can be fantastic, but Nightwish is about Tuomas' and his compositions. We are fortunate he now has Floor to exhibit his works.)
    The parts are:
    1. White Lands of Empathica (The End) - the end of a band as well know it. Later to become known as the "End of an Era"
    2. Home - the breakup of the band and the wish to find a place, home, to go to and get away from the madness of those who hated. Of course, there is a lot more in here too.
    3. The Pacific - as usual, Tuomas' needs to reference the oceans, one of his "grounding" themes. His love of the ocean metaphor is well-docunented. He did, of course, originally dream of becoming a marine biologist. Strange that he should have a gnat named after him!
    4. Dark Passion Play - the hate of Tarja fans led him into deep depression. However the band were not in good places so he didn't feel he could "cry on their shoulders" so in the end he went back to see his
    5. - Mother and Father (and The Beginning) - the lyrics here reflect what his mother said to him at that time. The beginning of a new era and new line-up
BTW, they are not hanging out having a chat as such - see later.
Tuomas refers to the ocean frequently - the second album is called Oceanborn, Dead Boys Poem ends with reference to ocean soul and Devil and the Deep Dark Ocean ends with lyrics about setting the dolphins free and "we shall wash the darkened blood red sea, our voices shall echo over the mountains and seas".
Tuomas is a very special person and this is, for me, the pinnacle of his work.
    Nothing surpasses it.
For him it is one of the deepest songs.
Quotes from the band on the making of the album and the song...
TUOMAS: We will never play "Bye Bye Beautiful" or "Master Passion Greed" live again, [sic] because the lyrics are just too unambiguous and personal. There was at least as much gloom behind "The Poet and the Pendulum", too, but it leaves a bit more room for interpretation. It's easily one of our best songs but especially, the "Mother and Father'" part in the end always stirs up such a storm of emotions that it's impossible for me to do it every night. Playing "The Poet and the Pendulum' is a real rollercoaster ride - it makes me feel anxious, blush, laugh, and, in the end, just happy that that part of my life is behind me.
    My notes:
My number 1 Nightwish song and for good reasons.
(No 2, Song of Myself, No 3 7 Days to the Wolves.)
This is a deeply emotional and meaningful song with which I empathise and it helped me to see that there was a way forward when depression struck. I am not alone in being "saved" by Nightwish, a fact that Tuomas has referred to and said he could not terminate the band because he knows they have meant so much to some fans who feel their lives have been saved by Nightwish.
He feels that he has a responsibility to the fans - not your standard rock musician then.
Floor is worth watching closely, her facial, hand and whole-body motions reflect the emotions she is portraying. Hands in Mother and Father for example. Tearing her hair in the Dark Passion Play section.
Note that when Tuomas talks about "Poet" he is always referencing himself. It happens throughout his ouvre.
You will see other cross-references too. Tuomas does that deliberately to give the fans a sort of anchor. Meadows of Heaven is another example - a song in itself and often referenced.
For what it's worth, here are are my thoughts and interpretations...
End to beginning - death of one era of the band, beginning of a new era.
Regarding the end of the first Era, I see no point in the blame game.
The band split, that is all we need to know.
Whatever the causes there was bound to be emotion on both sides so I leave it at that.
But this masterpiece is what came out of Tuomas' emotions.
The beginning is a boy soprano, Guy Elliott who also does the spoken parts. The whispering at the beginning is the central spoken section, but played in reverse.
Then we get the whole section "Home".
I see the "shoulder cries more" as having no shoulder to cry on because the other members of the band - his friends - were equally upset.
The "whore for the cold world" I see as the selling of his whole life to the music industry (the metaphorical pimps, hence the "whore" references) which is not interested in the person, only what they can get from the band.
The two faces bit is self explanatory; almost everyone will have been in situations where they have to hide their feelings and present a false front to the world.
The reference to betrayal is again obvious and there are lots of metaphors in the surrounding words. The altar I think, is the tie to the band - these upheavals in 2004/5 were not the first time Tuomas had felt like ending the band.
By the way, note the 3 minutes and counting: exactly 3 minutes later you get the guillotine motion.
By the way, Marco made the demo version of this, with all the lyrics sung by himself and with harsher lyrics at this point too.
Next we get to the Mother and Father section with Floor, Marco and Emppu all sitting, while Floor sings lyrics reflecting the words from his mother when he went back home for a break in the middle of all this turmoil.
These are the words of love and then of advice, that he was given.
Floor here is using her finger movements to accentuate emotion.
This whole section and the way Floor sings it, is packed with those damned Onion Ninjas.
    Marco's harmonies are wonderful.
We end with the final ethereal notes from Floor and here is another tingle-factor moment. Then a gentle piano ending, the calm after the emotional storm.
Here, as in Sparkle my Scenery, the choir on the original album is replaced by Floor who wanted to sing them herself (and proved completely capable of it) which Anette could not have done - she could probably get the notes but the emotion is there in the choral original and is amplified when Floor sings it.
The low brass used in many places is really effective.
    On the performance itself:
When Emppu goes over to Tuomas and later both Marco and Emppu go over, it is a sign of moral support. They both know how difficult this is for him - eventually he had the vocals turned off in his in-ear, so he didn't have to listen to them because Floor put such emotion into them.
At the end, she does not say "Thank you" immediately, as she does normally. Instead she looks over for a few seconds to check on him from her position.
BTW, I have never bought the theory that Tuomas was "in love" with Tarja. Those who say he asked her to join the band because he knew her from school - she was suggested by Emppu who had known her as an acquaintance at school.
    Empathica: from the Dark Tower...
"Empathica, also known as the White Lands of Empathica, is a snowy tundra located in End-World. The residents of Empathica are known for their abilities to empathize and share other people's emotions"

It’s exciting to see another person taking the time to do much research prior to watching this video. It really does help to get the jist of this masterpiece. When I first listened to this song I too picked up on the lyrics of “I the whore for the cold world, forgive me, I have but 2 faces one for the world, one for god save me….. going thru depression as Tuomas had done. I too am a suffer and those lyrics are completely true to the core. I tear up each time I listen or watch another such as yourself viewing it for the first time. All because I rekindle my emotions towards Tuomas’s roller coaster ride of a song. This song has that deep of an emotional attachment I put a tattoo on my arm of the pendulum and those exact lyrics. To signify my bad state of mind to never go there again. Even though Floor was in the band at that time of the making of this song album. She sure hits hard with her performance and singing to capture every essence the song greatly needs!
    Long live Nightwish

Bravo Lanae and thank you so much for doing this song justice!
You came well prepared and I felt delighted that your final first reaction was gratitude towards those of us who recommended you to do research before reacting to this masterpiece.
I have seen reactors going in completely blind and doing well but also an equal number of them expecting a hardcore Nightwish song and reacting accordingly only to realize along the performance that they were making fools of themselves.
You definitely noticed that the song is much more about the aftermath of firing Tarja in stead of the firing itself.
My favorite lyrics line is in the 'Mother and Father' segment: 'The Blade will keep on descending'. My interpretation is 'Be aware that whatever you do there will always be criticism'.
A bit about the 'new' drummer. His name is Kai Hahto. He is good friends with Jukka Nevalainen who introduced him as his preferred successor. Kai also is drummer in the Finnish hard metal band Wintersun.
You know what? You already saw him when you reacted to 'The Greatest Show on Earth'. Both 'Poet and Pendulum' and 'Greatest Show on Earth' are from the same Wembley 2015 Live performance. Imagine having witnessed 'The Big Three' (including 'Ghost Love Score') in one and the same concert! An exhilarating and in this case rather unique experience because The Poet was a unique live performance.
Apart from the album version (Dark Passion play 2007, first song of the album) sung by Annette I could not find any other registered live performances except from the Wembley 2015 one. My guess is that Tuomas wanted the song performed live at least once and he knew that Floor could do it.
It was very tough on him however and he seems to have stated in interviews that he had his sound engineer mute his in-ears for some vocal parts. The song is not on their set list anymore and most likely never will be performed live again. As Tuomas stated 'I don't live in that world anymore'.
Thanks again for your heartfelt reaction, Lanae. I have been looking forward to it anxiously and it surpassed my expectations by far.
Wishing you all the best and sending you kind regards from the Dutch Mountains.

It was not only a part of the fans, but also "friends" and even the President of Finland condemned the fact they fires Tarja (while she threatened to leave many times) NW is BIG in Finland, even politicians were busy with it. Poor Toumas and all other bandmembers, it's like fighting ghosts, you just can't and will demolish you.
Toumas was in a very bad state, when a friend urged him to write about it. It saved his life, but I also think about all the other people in the world who suffer.
In the music you hear the rage, beaten down, euphoria about suicide, depression, heartache..all phases in deep depression.

This was the first song Tuomas wrote after the last concert with Tarja and all the turmoil that followed. So I think "The end" is the end of that era and after the things he went through it's the beginning of something new at the end. This song is the bridge between old and new Nightwish.

You hit the nail on the head right in the beginning when you posited the reason for the virtual s__cide. The song starts with "The End" and ends with "The Beginning." In a song on a previous past album, he wrote the lyric, "I need to die in order to feel alive." The s__cide in PATP was that he felt he'd committed career s__cide by firing Tarja, and that, therefore, was "the end" for him (recall the line from Romanticide, "See me ruined by my own creation," his creation being not only Nightwish itself but also Tarja's very fame and career). But that "End" served a purpose of allowing a new beginning, a rebirth of his spirit as well as allowing Tarja to rebirth her solo career on her own terms (which she did spectacularly well).
One minor side note--- A line here which does catch most viewers by surprise and takes them aback is in that first spoken word section. But it is not what we automatically think at first. He is referring to Poe's pendulum blade "ra_ing him again and again and again" as it passes back and forth over his abdomen, cutting deeper with each pass. So it is not referring to that other terrible meaning of the word from which I, again, redacted a letter to avoid the sniffing algorithm monster.

The Poet and the Pendulum is the song about there 1st singer Tarja Turnunen getting fired in 2005 , here's my interpretation of it - The Poet and the Pendulum was written after firing Tarja the original singer. She was the face of Nightwish at the time, and Tuomas (Keyboards) wrote this and considered her a muse to many of the songs he had written at that point. They had also grown up in the same city and knew each other since early childhood. Some say Tuomas was in love with her but only Tuomas knows that for sure . All the band members decided together to fire her for acting too much of a diva And her husband & Manager was stepping way outta bounds concerning the band business He always wanted more money , only big paying show but the band did it for the love of music and there fans . According to all the band members, Tarja was missing lots of rehearsals and would not even travel with the band anymore. Tuomas was painted as the devil by many fans, and went through a deep depression. He even considered ending the band . He wrote The Poet and the Pendulum at that time, and actually kills himself in the song. He said he killed himself in the song at the 10:00 time stamp , as to kill the pain he was going through . To this day every time he plays it, it takes him back to those feelings, and shows on his face. In the last part, Mother and Father, words are said to him that his real mother said to him at that time of his deep depression. One part that touches me at the end when the guitarist Emppu and bassist Marko, the only other two involved with firing Tarja (that were still active with the band at the time of this show )were standing with Tuomas at the end in solidarity and love., NOTE : the 1st two words are (The End) and the last two words are (The Beginning) representing the end of the 1st era of Nightwish and the beginning of the next era czcams.com/video/N4Vfy5yCy-c/video.html&pp=ygUZdGhlIHBvZXQgYW5kIHRoZSBwZW5kdWx1bQ%3D%3D.. NOTE : then came Annette Olzen in 2007 so the world tour started and 6 months into the tour there became problems with her so the show in Denver Colorado in 2012 she supposedly became sick while the band was about to take stage and what happened next has never happened before this is a documentary called (The Denver Debacle) - czcams.com/video/zH33rNy33iU/video.html&pp=ygUSdGhlIGRlbnZlciBkZWJhY2xl NOTE : Then right after that came ( Learn the setlist in 48hrs ) this is how they called Floor to fill in and help them finish the world tour because the cut ties with Anette and knew Floor was the only women that could possibly help them for the next year of touring . It did not take long for them to realize that Floor is the one . NOTE this is over 2 hours long - czcams.com/video/vhExkmWKMEU/video.html&pp=ygUSdGhlIGRlbnZlciBkZWJhY2xl
