  • This 2013 Toyota Camry is in for a rattle noise coming from the steering when driving down the road. I also has a knocking noise when shaking the steering wheel from side to side. Any one would mistake this noise for a bad steering intermediate shaft. But its not.

    Good tutorial G Auto, I figured out how to lower the entire steering (12mm nuts X 4) column as you suggested and it did save me time and much less disassembly, I added a bit of GP grease to the damper cavity with a new damper and my rattle and knocking has been corrected. Thank you!

    I had the same noise on my wife’s Venza. Was driving me mental where it was coming from so I dove in deep determined to solve this. I saw this video but my damper was fine. The problem is the gapping between the metal worm to plastic pinion gear. Fortunately I have a friend who does specialty plating for the aerospace industry. Ultimately I was able to solve this using one of his processes. I’m going to offer a service so others don’t have to replace the entire column for $1,800 only to have the same problem down the road. I had no choice because I bought two salvage columns only to have the same issue.

    • @tightreigns
      @tightreigns Před 2 měsíci

      Hey @@ntnkyt
      I had the damper replaced by my mechanic. It wasn't damaged, so it wasn't a surprise it didn't solve the problem. However, it's good to know that the part fits an 2009 Toyota Venza, which wasn't clear based on my research.
      In anticipation of this I purchased an intermediate steering shaft and had that changed too. It didn't solve the issue either!
      My mechanic suggested that changing the power steering rack & pinion would solved it, which I'm yet to try. Sounds like what @chriszbodula1894 is talking about above 👆
      Whatever he did, he made the rattling noise a lot more subtle, so you hear it less often, and when you do it's not as loud. If I can sell my car like that, I'll be happy.

    I suppose this is not a cheap material from manufacturer to make savings, but is purposely made brittle. I read in MotorAge that a problem in "electric power steering" is the chance of motor seized. Then your steering is blocked. But when you grab the wheel and turn it with a lot of force this "thing" breaks and you can have steering back without the power assist. Sorry for the BS but i think that's why they made this brittle and not from metal. Any thoughts?

    • @gautorepair
      @gautorepair  Před rokem +1

      could be possible. I think its made of this material to cushion the two components. if it were made of metal sure it would last longer but would probably cause noise issues. I have seen many similar dampers in the forklift industry. I used to service BHS battery station which has a huge 3 phase electrical motor driving the hydraulic pump. It has a similar damper but way heavier duty for sure. After many years they too fall apart and cause a thumping noise when you activate the hydraulics.

    • @dustinj7028
      @dustinj7028 Před 7 měsíci

    Hey great video!!! I just dropped my steering column to replace the damper on my 2009 Highlander to find out the spindles are fixed without containing this plastic damper. I two-faced the intermediate steering shaft and ask struts last year already. I'm all out of ideas... Any advice?? Thanks 👍

    • @gautorepair
      @gautorepair  Před 7 měsíci +2

      This is quite tricky ill admit. It can easily fool you. I recommend just to go after the damper first. Once you remove the electric steer motor its easy to see the damage. Otherwise you will go after the shaft everytime because you will feel the noise on the shaft

If road is nice without any bump then there is no noice. I checked with michanic and it is said car has worn coupler in the electric steering motor drive. Hey this is a late comment but I hope you can give me an answer. I have a 2009 RAV 4. So far I’ve been experiencing a sort of sticky steering wheel. When I turn left or right, the wheel might get stuck in the position until I move it back straight. When it does get stuck and I free it, it sounds similar to the noise from the video. Kind of like a clunk when turning the wheel left or right. I just had my steering inspected and my mechanic says the intermediate shaft is fine. My next action was just to replace the steering column but do you think I’m also having a problem with just the damper? It sounds similar to your video albeit it doesn’t happen as frequently as in your video. Based off your experience, does it check all the boxes for the damper?

    • @gautorepair
      @gautorepair  Před 2 měsíci

      I does except for the sticky feeling. You may have multiple issues. You can start by checking the damper

      @@gautorepair awesome thanks for the reply! Let’s say the damper is fine, what would be your next course of actions? I forgot to mention I got my suspension components checked and it all checked out okay. Could the motor itself be damaged? My dad said if the motor is damaged then it’ll either work or it won’t work. Not give me problems like this. This all becoming a headache lol I just want to fix it without having to swap out my steering column lol

    • @gautorepair
      @gautorepair  Před 2 měsíci

      @user-oh9tv8ul4c i would say to check individual components. If you have checked out the intermediate shaft and suspension continue to rule out other things like rack and pinion, etc. Something is binding up.

Thanks for posting this video, really appreciate it.

      @@chriszbodula1894Thanks for sharing. Since my last comment I’ve seen the same issue because of a play in the lower end of the steering electric motor. Parts tubing get worn out and bang against the shell of the motor. The usual remedy is stick a piece of thick rubber there. I haven’t got the time to do it myself yet.

    Very helpful hint video buddy. I drive a TOYOTA AVENSIS III ESTATE (T27) 2.0 D-4D (ADT270_) in England europe that's got an electric steering column and the steering does the same thing when I turn the steering wheel at low speeds. I don't know what to make of it. Is it bad tie rod ends? Is it bad CV joints? Is it bad suspension strut or bad strut mount and bearing or is it that it might have yhe same bushing as the Tacoma that you drive in this video. I am scared of spending a tonne of money to replace parts that don't need replacing and still not fix the problem. Do you think I might have the same problem as you? I would appreciate some advice please.

    Hi, good morning, so I've been hearing a annoying noise coming from the engine of my 4-cylinder Camry 2012 when I accelerate. Before, it only made noise when I accelerated above 3,000 rpm. Then it dropped to 2,500 and now it's 2,000... I thought it was the water pump or some pulley or something, but I tested it by removing the belt and the noise is still there. I don't know what it could be. Anyone have some tip? What could be?
