Neil Peart is the only person that I didn't know personally that I cried when he died. He was famously shy, but through all his lyrics it was like you truly knew him.

I lost my mom and my brother to cancer, and I'm now less than a week away from finalizing the sale on the house in which we'd lived our entire lives, and I always burst into tears whenever I see this. It's a beautifully moving tribute to three lives that have touched mine, who were taken far too soon. For another beautifully moving tribute to Neil, and how he made the most of every moment he was given, be sure to see the U.S. Army Band's rendition of their song Time Stand Still. Rest in peace Professor; your garden is being well looked after.

I am a lifelong Rush fan as well, going back to the early 70's. I have also seen them more than 10 times. Unfortunately, I lost track of exactly how many. The only record I have of some of the Rush shows I saw is thanks to my wife who saves ticket stubs. I have not always done the right things, but I can say most assuredly that I am a better person because of them.
Rush taught me to listen and learn (Every Rush song ever written). They taught me to work hard (Working Man). They taught me that life is tough and unexpected (Kid Gloves, Roll the Bones). They taught me to be curious and change the world (Closer to the Heart). They taught me to be enthusiastic (Red Barchetta). They taught me to be creative (2112, Closer to the Heart). They taught me to explore (The Analog Kid, Fly by Night, The Camera Eye). They taught me not to waste time (Between the Wheels). They taught me to dream and seize the day, (Losing It, Mission, Marathon). They taught me to respect my fellow man (Witch Hunt). They taught me to abhor war (Red Sector A, Distant Early Warning). They taught me to be inclusive of others (Subdivisions). They taught me to just have fun and enjoy what you do (Where's my thing, YYZ, La Villa Strangiato, Leave that Thing Alone, The Main Monkey Business).
They taught me and they taught me, year after year until they ended their career with the greatest lesson of all. They taught me to build a rich, fertile life, grow, flourish, and to remember them. I will never forget them. Their songs are words to live by.

As mentioned prior, the older you get the more meaning this song has. The older we become we realize there is more behind us than in front of us and we ask ourselves in reflection if we lived our lives the best we could. The answer is always no. If only we could live twice bringing what we learned in the first to the second. Nurture and protect what we have because we get only one chance.

The lyrics are a nod to Voltaire's 'Candide'. Not many rock bands can say that ! It's the last song of an album long story where the main character is looking back on his life. Clockwork Angels is a great story.

I am blessed to have seen Rush perform at or 6 - 7 shows between 1981 - 2012.
I was a blessing and honor to have my wife and son with me to see this song performed with me the last time in 2012. We were on the main floor in Michigan…

Great reaction to an absolutely beautiful song! This track got me emotional upon first release in 2012...always got misty eyed, but upon hearing at after Neil's passing (RIP Professor), the tears flow...every time. The lyrics are perfection, and apply to us all:
"The measure of a life, is a measure of love and respect - so hard to earn, so easily burned. In the fullness of time, a garden to nurture & protect"
Then comes the music, especially Alex's piano & guitar solo! I can't think of a more appropriate, poignant & heartfelt swan song by any group. Rush forever! Cheers.

This is my favorite Rush song. There's a common misconception that Neil Peart knew he had cancer when he wrote it and meant it as a goodbye. However, it was written a full five years before he became ill, and there was no plan at the time for Clockwork Angels to be the band's final album. It was just the conclusion to the story the album tells, with the protagonist reflecting on his life. The fact that it wound up being the last song on the last album is purely a coincidence, albeit a sadly fitting one.

Being sad because you feel you haven't done enough in life is a moot point. Everyone is given a task and if you chose to ignore it, that's on you. Life is a give and take, to live is to trade that gift for a task/purpose. The check is always due at the end of the meal called life. Ever wonder why the main universal rule is balance? You and I along with everything else has a job to maintain that balance. ❤

I don't believe it was the last song written, although I really have no idea which song Neil wrote first or in which order. But it was the last song on the album.
Your soul is a garden, and we should cultivate it and grow. Be good people, enjoy your lives and your families. Life is too short to harbor resentment, hate, and anger. Be happy and thrive.
Your life will be remembered in the people's eyes around you. The way you see people and the way they see you, is the way you will be remembered. "The measure of a life is a measure of love and respect. The way you live, the gifts that you give. In the fullness of time, it's the only return that you expect." "A garden to nurture and protect."
    Rush is missed.

It is a beautiful and amazing feeling to be confronted with reality and truth even when it is scary and sad. As humans, when we truly come to the present moment and see our truth, it brings many gifts. One primary one is how connected we feel with ourselves. It's often fleeting and some people find it disturbing when they are incapable of sitting in that power, but I love it!
Neil, as is often the case finds a way to deliver the message. Other performers here do a great job and you can see how meaningful it is to them.
What a wondrous way to end a career as a trio. 🖤🖤🖤

That was a wonderful reaction that explained many of the possibilities that one could interpret this beautifully composed/performed song.

It is a measure of a life. 40 years they dealt with it. What is your measure . I hope it is love.

When they wrote this, Neil wasn't sick, but they knew they were coming to an end. When I heard this Alex's solo, it felt like he was conveying gratefulness for the times they had together, extreme sadness that the time was coming to an end and a brief hope that they'd get more time together.

    The measure of a life is a measure of love and respect;
So hard to earn, so easily burned
    In the fullness of time
A garden to nurture and protect
    (It's a measure of a life)
The treasure of a life is a measure of love and respect:
The way you live, the gifts that you give
    In the fullness of time
Is the only return that you expect

This is one of my absolute favourite Rush compositions, not songs, this is more than a song, like 2112 and La Villa Strangiato, this is a Composition. Rush was a combination of 3 amzing artists, as well as 3 master musicians.
