Thank you for your comment because you reminded me that women have loved Rush for a long time, myself included. I saw Rush for the 1976/77 2112 Tour. The opening band was Heart. Ceiling shattering show for me. Fast forward to now. I had never heard “the Garden” before this reaction. My instant favorite Rush song. Sending Peace to you and to Rush. I found the Garden, Neil.

When I first heard it, I thought of it as a swansong. I had no idea what was to come. First they retired. And then Neil died. Now, although I absolutely love the song, I find it so hard to listen to. It's too raw...

I’ve loved Rush since I was 11 yrs old, through all their phases. Their songs so often lifted me, thrilled me, made me grateful to love music as I do, and for the wonderful people who make it- especially Rush. But this is the only song of there that has ever made me cry. Even from when I heard it the first time. And now I know why. Consciously or not, Neil has written his own epitaph. This was him saying goodbye. He probably didn’t know what was going to happen, and the band didn’t know they were going to finish, for several more years. But something in him knew, that this was their last album, the last of the “Goblet, from the cask of ‘43”. Let no one say that he, and they, didn’t tend their Garden well, and make it flower.

Perhaps that adaption is the healing or solace that we seek. We all change as we go through life. Some events alter us more than others. We learn to live with our pain, and to grow from it. I don’t know if Neil ever changes his mind on believing in the sovereignty of God, but it is my hope that he did and found rest in his arms. He was a good man, and I will miss his brilliant mind, and his awesome talent. I learned a lot from him.

That's what I've always thought too. I saw them for thr first time in 96-97 Test For Echo tour and never missed a tour grin that point on, seeing then twice on certain tours. I noticed that their sound with each tour that followed each tour they got better and better. They had their sound to such a sharp edge, i don't think I'll ever hear another group of guys, let alone just 3, sound as good as they did live......perfection.

I think the world had been noticing since "I Love You Man" and "Beyond The Lighted Stage". Like Geddy said, someone told him they were "giving off heat" in the latter years of their career. It is almost as if they existed in anti-time. They really made their biggest splash at the end.
A lot of things happened in that last decade. I think that "Rush In Rio" really set them back to capturing the magic they had during their heyday. The grungy garbage of "Test For Echo" and "Vapor Trails" was largely cast on to the trash heap, and they went back to their strengths on "Snakes & Arrows" and "Clockwork Angels". They got recognition in the popular media, and the people from the RRHF that were keeping them out were finally forced to give up their orthodoxy.
The snickering popular culture gave way to respect for their compositional ability, musicianship, lyrics, and utter professionalism. Sometimes people get what they deserve. Nobody ever worked harder for it than these gentlemen. What made them even greater was that they remained two guys from the neighborhood, and their best friend the drummer from St. Catharines. They were a unique organization. We should be grateful that we occupied this planet at the same time as they did.
      Thank you, boys.

@@elmoblatch9787 Ouch! Neil's worldview owed much to the influence of his grandmother, who was unapologetically Christian, and he wove deliberate and thoughtful Biblical references throughout the fabric of his lyrics. If you had asked him if this is all there is, he would have said he didn't know. And we certainly cannot know what he may have been thinking, while he still was able to do so, about what might await him, if anything, on the other side.
If there are fans, such as Brian and myself, who believe that Neil has gained eternal life, who are you to insult US by insisting it ain't so? I'm wondering if perhaps it is your own sense of grief at Neil's passing that has provoked you to lash out at others whose heartfelt expressions do not comport with your own. In any event, I believe your anger is misplaced: Certainly we can agree that the man's musical and literary legacy will live on well after you and we exit this life. And that's something worth celebrating.

RIP Neil, our Professor!! I was gutted by this news Friday. Rush has been part of my life for the better part of 30 years. Literally the soundtrack to my 'geeky' adolescence. Neil's words over their catalogue spoke to me, as so many others. His musicianship is practically unmatched, his legacy - solidified & legendary.
Long have I wanted you to listen to The Garden - more out of poignancy in regards to Jared (as hearing you speak of his life, the lyrics seemed to always ring in my ears - 'the measure of a life, is a measure of love and respect...') Neil's words could not be more appropriate. Now I'm sitting here at work, tears streaming down my face. All weekend I was a mess, which felt weird as I didn't personally know him, but felt like I did. I feel for his wife and daughter. His second chance at life. My only comfort is that he is now reunited with his first wife and daughter (Jacqueline & Selena), tragically taken from him far, far too soon. This man has known pain. More than most. Saddened to discover his final years were spent battling a brutally horrific disease.
First lines from Afterimage "Suddenly you were gone, from all the lives you left your mark upon..."
Neil, go tend your Garden. My love, admiration & respect is with you always.

I've been a RUSH fanatic since I was13 in the 7th grade in 1982. They are absolutely my favorite band forever. Being now 51, I've listened to all their songs from Finding My Way to The Garden countless times and seen them live about a dozen times including their farewell tour. I play the drums and have always held that Neil taught me to play because I learned the drums by figuring out his music. I knew wholeheartedly and without a doubt when I first heard this song that is was the last they would ever record as RUSH. What a beautiful, balanced and perfect ending it is. I was devastated about the news of Neil's death and cried like a family member had died, because to me, and all RUSH fans, that's exactly what happened. Rest in your very well earned and deserved peace Professor.

What a cool dude, amazing drummer....PERCUSSIONIST!!!!!!! He provided the rhythm of OUR lives. The consummate professional, and remarkable talent. And a guy who needed his space, particularly after facing the tragedies that he did in the late 90’s.
Amazing that Neal had the strength to pick up the sticks once again and return the band. But we’re all so thankful that he did. And we were sure blessed by what they were able to do in the years that followed, up till the end.
