Wow. What an artistic and atmospheric masterpiece. Even the deaths are creatively terrifying and gory. The depth of interest and refinement in 2d linear games makes for so much more entertainment.
This is hands down one of the strangest and prettiest games Mike has ever streamed. It has strong studio Ghibli vibes and aesthetic. Excellent watch!
I guess I'm gonna be that guy, but Studio Ghibli is probably the last thing that would come to my mind while looking at this game.

@@SINPABL0 It's definitely cinematic and focuses less on gameplay. After all it was made by the same guy that created Another World on the Amiga. I played that as a kid and was blown away by the cutscenes and all that. I was just perplexed because Ghibli has such a distinctive art style even among other anime, and this game looks as western as it gets. But now I get what you are saying.
The cgi intro graphics aren't to bad for Playstation. It looks like they actually cared some.

I played the hell out of Out of This World, but never knew about this game. Looks like an evolved version of the gameplay concept.

Something about the video's thumbnail made me feel like I just had to watch this immediately. Can't quite point to it.
Yeah, I can tell there's something wrong with your inputs for the special power/ordinary powers. The special power (charged attack) is supposed to do a short blast if only tapped and the ordinary power (the short blast) is supposed to have its own button as well. If changing emulators isn't an option there's action button remapping in the "controls" screen of the options menu treehouse
an hour to get to THAT room and an hour to get out of it. Perfect game design :D

Mike thank you for streaming this game. My memory of this game is very vivid, I got to pick out a game at Toys R Us one year for my birthday and I was overwhelmed by the options. I knew my best friend at the time (RIP) had Mega Man X4 and that it was awesome. I came nearly very very close to picking X4 but instead I went with Heart of Darkness. I fucking hated it as a kid and always regretted not picking Mega Man X4 lmao

I love the aesthetic. From the cutscenes to the prerendered backgrounds to the animation of the characters. This is absolutely beautiful. I've gotta find a way to play this.

@@mikematei .. ;j I hear that from knowing it firsthand but all i can think of is how much better games were like this, But also how you deserved ages ago to have been interviewd, And have had your face pretty much everywhere on the cover & Insides of (Sadly gone) PS2-Magazine.
Its amazing how all this technological-wonder we now somehow canceled-out what was already perfect in a kind of way. And wasnt 'Broken and so didnt need to change from good to 'Slowly-Being Broken' with too-much innovation made all hollow.. +

@mikematei By default, it is. Special attack is Triangle, wheras normal attack is Circle. You can remap the four actions to any face and shoulder buttons you like - and you can have two bindings per action.
Personally, I like putting Run on L1 and Fire on R1 (I only actually press R1 for the gun though, I usually just press circle for normal magic shots)
That would be great. But when I checked for remapping options there didn't seem to be any.

This was an interesting time in gaming, we had the 3D, but also the PS1 gave developers that enormous CD capacity, so 2D stuff could be done that just wasn't possible before.

They spent years developing this game. The release was delayed more than 3 times. They put lots of work on rendering and animating the characters. The final result was.... well it didn't blow anyone away. It was just ok.
Games like this would have been great on the atari jaguar with its graphical capabilities. Also fps games would have been a good genre on the jag, like Blake stone, Duke nukem 3d and even quake could have been possible. There were so many good fps games back then like dark forces that should have been ported to the jag. Maybe someday a group of people will get classics like heretic and hexen to run on the jag. Anyway, this game looks great.

I knew the second I saw the title this was going to be quality content! I only wish I could have been there for the original stream! The difficulty and learning curve is something else, a bonafide ragefest!

Finally Ive been asking for years for mike to play this.
I remember getting this game used and being really excited even thou i knew nothing about it, only to get it home open the case and see that i only had disc 2. The game wont let you play the second disc without a save from the first disc either. 💀
Ah, Heart Of Darkness, a game that I actually played and beat:
-Saw it for the first on one of those VHS tapes (dunno the name of it) which had a lot of gameplay footage of upcoming games on it.
-Didn't play it on the original PSOne but played it later on the PS2 (thank goodness for the PS2's backwards compatibility which also allowed me to play Final Fantasy VII and Mega Man 8 on it).
-It has been too long since I played it but what I do remember is that I beat it (dunno if the game has difficulty settings or not) though I remember the actual very very last gameplay part being a bit underwhelming (or maybe it was just the ending).
-Last, to be honest, I didn't own this game...played it through by repeated rentals and saving the progress on my memory card.
Now for PSOne recommendations:
-Recently tried out Jumping Flash! which was decent. One of the launch titles for the playstation, it is a first person platform puzzle game with levels. From the 15 minutes I tested it with my nephew, it appeared to be something you might like.
-T'ai Fu: Wrath Of The Tiger is a 3D beat em up/platform which was pretty decent from the rental as a child. I remember it being a sort of child-friendly version of something like God Hand.
-Last, the Crash Bandicoot games are always a good suggestion. Great platforming action and in their original PSOne incarnation, rather difficult.
When i played this game for some reason (i think its a glitch or smth) in the water section i didn't need to breath air which made that part much easier.

I remember aeeing this game and thinking it looked amazing, but it sucks that some of the controls and animations make the gameplay clunky.
Just a few PS1 games i think you would like: Ape Eacape, Brave Fencer Musashi, Rage Racer, Jumping Flash, Herc's Adventure. The PS1 along with the SNES are my favorite two consoles, there are so many games in the PS1 library, from really great stuff to quirky and experimental games.
Watching you make easy parts 700% harder by only using the charge attack, and having an over-reliance on the janky "double jump" (which I don't believe is ever actually needed, and often makes things trickier) was _killing_ me, but now I'm just curious how far you'll make it like that. 😂
I appreciate that you don't cheat or even look solutions up, though.
The controls are shitty. If I could have set the fast attack to its own button it would not have been a problem. Not one person has explained how to change the controls to do that. I looked on stream. I saw no option to alter the controls.
If the playstation version had a way to make the charge and the rapid not the same button, yeah it would have been 700 times easier.
Its the reason I’m not finishing this game. At this point, I have no way of changing the controls. If there is some hidden way to remap it, let me know.
@@mikematei 😂 The chat seemed to give occasional nuggets of fragmented truth, but whether or not you revisit the game, I've got you:
I do own the physical PS1 game (NTSC-U, nothing _weird_ ) and just put it on to confirm the default controls are "Square: Run, X: Jump, O: Fire, Triangle: Special Power." The button that _should_ have saved you an hour on those worms was just O/circle tapping for rapid fire. If you're emulating, there must have been some weird issue, UNLESS you played the game before, accidentally remapped some buttons, and saved over the defaults.
To check/remap controls, select "Options" from the title screen, select "Options" again from the next _treehouse_ themed menu, then "Control."
The game's frustrating and not perfect, but everything you were asking for that would "fix everything" is already supposed to be in there.

This has more in common and shares the same console as Oddworld: Abe's Oddysee. Not sure why no one mentioned that. They also released just 1 year apart. Mike if you read this check the Oddoworld games sometime.

I never understood what they were going for with this game. It's brutally difficult and has tons of death animations, but the cutscenes are something out of a little kids cartoon.

Awesome vid another one you could check out is over blood for the PS1. Theirs alot of exploring theirs no levels it's screen to screen later on in the game there is a map check it out I liked it myself.

I hate it when the chat is a bunch of useless maggots misdirecting Mike all the time. At 4:30 all he had to do was to crawl underneath to the right to climb up. Hilarious how after playing it for hours this mechanism did not stick with Mike.
There's a port of the PC version that can be played on a modded Xbox but never tried it def looks way smoother than the PS1 but game still looks pretty cool nonetheless. Looney Tunes: Sheep Raider lol.

Hey, Mike, there's a 3D Blaster Master on PS1 that you should check out. Not a bad game. One of the most unexpected games to see go from 2D to 3D.
This game has beautiful artwork and animations.
quality game. the 3D stuff even looked bad back in the day but the rest of the game has an awesome atmosphere to it.
Man that kid gets fucked up in every sort of way. The pre-rendered backgrounds and some of the movement and interesting little puzzles remind me of Oddworld: Abe's Oddysee (PS1/PC). I used to love that game back in the day. I don't think it felt too frustrating to control though, would love for Mike to take a look at it.
