    So clear to see this reflected on consoles, the PC-Engine was released in '86 and has over a hundred shooters, the Mega Drive, released in '88 has almost a hundred shooters and the SNES released in '90 has almost sixty titles, comes to show how the shoot-em-up heyday was between the late 80's and early 90's, fortunately the PS1 has many ports and even some exclusives, while the Saturn has less than the PS1, but still a lot.

      @@ShmupJunkie I'll say that your "Every Shooters" series are the best the CZcams has to offer, at least from what I follow and specifically for shooters. They have a very upbeat energy and I hope it's at least half as fun to make them as it is to watch them.
      If you ever decide to cover these systems, I'm sure people will even save them for future reference, starting from the PC-Engine, Mega Drive and now Super NES.
      With all that, while the SNES has fewer shooters than many others, I feel it compensates by quality over quantity, while the NES is certainly the opposite, but still has dozens of great titles in the genre!

      You noticed that too huh? Yeah it's a bummer this video is grossly underperforming after a really great start due to all the awesome subs watching and enjoying. But the algo follows overall interest, so it's not youtube's fault. Too many just lack the interest to give it a chance and discover how wrong they may be about the system and it's shooting library. Or maybe there's just much less SNES fans that care about shooting games compared to the Mega Drive. Either way I think it came out great and am really glad you and others have enjoyed it. First of all, great breakdown of all the shmups on a system. Your videos that do that for a given system or developer are my favorites and have helped me find so many of the shmups I bought new or used in the last year.
    Second, in your Cotton 100% view you mentioned the fairy charge attack and I’m so glad you did because I didn’t know it even existed. It wasn’t mentioned in any online guide I saw, doesn’t get mentioned on the button mapping window in the PS4/Switch re-release, etc. So for anyone reading this comment: you hold the bomb button to charge the attack, then fairies start spinning around you and you can release it to fire the fairies at the enemy. This drastically decreases the time some boss encounters take.
    So thanks for getting me to look for an attack I never knew about in the game. You made me play it better. :)

  • @philmason9653
    @philmason9653 Před rokem +1

    Glad you're still at these! Another great reference vid. I was a ride or die SNES kid, and for years would have told you that even if other systems had more good shooters, the SNES had the very best. And that Space Megaforce was better than any shooter ever. But TBH in the past handful of years since really getting deep into shmups, the PC Engine has taken the #1 spot in my heart. All those terrible out of tune SNES sound fonts have really not aged well, and the controller is fine but not a good as the Mega Drive 6 button or PC Engine's. You mentioned the fan service in Scrambled Valkyrie...I 1CCed Macross 2036 a couple of weeks ago, and then went to play Scrambled Valkyrie and the wonky music in that game is _tough_ to get through after the perfection of 2036 (which, granted, is a good but not incredibly well designed game).
    Also, your PC Engine videos Convinced me of the greatness of Gradius II, I think that's edged out Gradius III for me, soundtrack and all. Still, at launch Gradius III was the coolest looking game for the SNES, I drooled over Nintendo Power pictures of it for hours before it came out.

      @ShmupJunkie  Před rokem +1

      It’s hard to compete with that pc engine library man for just about any console. It’s always going to be my all time nostalgic fav and the one I come back to most. But I was really trying to do justice to the SNES games here as it’s always such an underrated library overall. So I hope people see it was far better as a whole then it’s given credit for. I agree on 2036 that music is untouchable. Hard to compete with the CD reproductions. It’s that and how closely it emulates a lot of what makes Macross popular that I enjoy most about it, even if the game behind it is ok but not great.

    I expected somewhat negative reviews from a few games I really like (Gradius III and Super R-TYPE more specific), but I'm still really happy that you're making a video about the SNES shmups.
    I remember spending hours playing and learning some of the shumps of the SNES library. Mostly Gradius III, Parodius Da, Gokujō Parodius, Super R-TYPE, R-TYPE III and Pop 'N TwinBee.
    Pop 'N TwinBee specifically. I didn't had a lot of trouble learning it, but I certainly hold many memories with it. Just hearing "A Walk on The Bottom of the Ocean", brings back so many memories. Not only mentioned that I always discover something new whenever I replay it. I mean… Did you know that you could punch small bullets to make them fly away from you? Or that certain enemies in the Big Airship level turn in to Bells when punched enough times?

    I was a little disappointed not to see my favorite gallery shooters Battleclash and Metal Combat: Falcon’s Revenge at least not get a mention. I had no choice to omit them I did consider it though. If I do those I have to do all the run n guns not just vertical and I end up with Contra, Pocky too and everything in between. Zombies, Soldier of Fortune etc. I skipped them on the MD video too for that reason. I felt there are so many and really good ones that they’d deserve their own video someday. I didn’t want to cram run n guns in with mostly pure shooters. In fact I do think there are some other gallery shooters like wild guns I may have missed! That I should’ve included. Wild Guns was kind of a Mark special. He loves the game so much I wanted to let him do a segment on it 😅

    I owned both a Megadrive and SNES launch day here in Australia and I know everyone bangs on about the Megadrive shoot em ups , but I much prefer the SNES shoot em ups like un squadron, both r types, the Darius games and parodius , macross and aleste over pretty much any Megadrive shoot em up. I think the snes really flexes it's muscles in the sound department and improved colour palette ,even with slow down I find a game like super r type so much more atmospheric and iconic to play over something like thunder force 3.
    Props to truxton on the Megadrive though for being and amazing port and really capturing that arcade feel

      Believe it or not I prefer the PC Engine Tatsujin over the Mega Drive, but it was certainly really good and expected given it was done by Toaplan themselves (much like most of the MD Toaplan ports). When asked, I normally choose mega drive overall, as it does have a ton of amazing games on there that are system exclusive and not arcade ports (I feel that way even moreso for pc engine), but I absolutely love the SNES library and it's still irreplaceable for me. So I'm glad I had access to all 3 growing up, even if I didn't own all the consoles. I was really hoping this video would help many see the SNES library in a new light that often blow it off in terms of shooters. Those that do are simply missing out.

      You’re very welcome. I enjoy making these and have recently considered doing a final 16bit video that’s shorter, pitting all 3 consoles against each other in various categories and overall. Not sure yet but it might be fun! And probably spicy lol.

    Totally worth the wait brother I loved it. Shooter/Shmups are one of gamings pure forms while helping promote some of the most savage/beautiful sound tracks in gaming history the SNES is amazing although it doesn't have Ranger X or truxton lol it's such a great console and this video really let me know about totally bodacious games that I didn't know I needed to try and play. Rock on brother fully full on robo chubby of a video bro thank you.🤘 P.s. Gradius III music is fire AF

      your god damn right, for sure brother. And thanks for the help with getting to discord the other day I'm straight lacking when it comes to social media dude total dog shit at it. If you know of anybody looking for some Shmups they are making and need some music made for them. Let me know, I might be able to help/ provide if ever need be. The indie portion of the game development is such a vital organ of gaming right now/ and always will be and if I could contribute or help in anyway I would for sure. Because without bad ass music to back up your bad ass game...... Well us shooter fans need that auditorial vibration to keep that robo chub at high noon. Your a badass and thanks for all the hard work and entertainment it's very appreciated 😆🤘

    I was definitely waiting for your thoughts on Strike Gunner. The only thing you forgot to mention was the 2 player mode and unique fusion of the ships. But yeah, I definitely understand the criticisms of the game but I still like it a lot. It's more of a casual shmup you can pick up and play whenever.
