On Sunday 20th October 1996, Newcastle United battered Manchester United 5-0. Alan Shearer scored. Shearer scored against the team he turned down 3 months earlier to move to his boyhood club for a world record fee. He loved it.
This is the story of that transfer.
This is the story of the world’s biggest transfer before social media and the internet. This is a player that was approached by the biggest names in the game. This is a player that chose to go home, and become immortal. Wor Al.

When this happened my dad picked me up from school and said I had a dentist appointment, it was the first I had heard about it. Anyway 20 minutes later we were at St James Park and he told me I'd never forget this moment as we stood with a crowd of people applauding him and he was right.
God, I wish one my childhood dental visits had ended like that.
I remember driving into town with my mates who I went to the match with, couldn't get near the ground by car. It was amazing outside the ground, the atmosphere and just the pure joy in the signing.
I also remember jumping on the bus to Gosforth Park hotel in '82 to spy through the conference room windows because we'd heard a certain KK was signing for Newcastle. There must have been at least a couple of hundred others who had heard the same thing, and this was in the days pre-internet so I have no idea how the rumour got around :)
@Two Natal Yods ur dad did something which I call a pro gamer move.
I aspire to be like your old man when I have kids.
Two Natal Yods you were at school on Christmas Eve wtf?
Surprised they didn't announce the arrival of Ibrahim Sangare.
he went to their team??
Which video was this
Tifo: Shearer was the ultimate predator
Adam Johnson: *finally a worthy opponent*
Don't put shearer on the same level as that criminal
lmaooooo
Wrong kind of predator Adam!
Oof
Shearer hit balls like johnson hit young ass
"Titillating bluster" may be my new favourite phrase
Christ who else as a teenager used to get in trouble for phoning those lines ?? Titillating bluster at 60p a minute to hear the vaguest mention of a transfer target and a dubious exclusive on a potential foreign striker target.
Tittilating or tilttilating
That's gonna be the name of my new punk band.
@@gordieparenteau6555 id go see that band off name alone.
I might write a story about resilience in 10 years of how I resisted this guy's soothing voice avoiding a subscription to athletic! Silently proud of myself 🥰
"A Guide to resisting Devine temptation - Angelo1234"
Foreword by The Athletic
Well, i can't say that story.
His voice is indeed soothing. I do find myself wanting to do his bidding.
The athletic is trash, just a bunch of uni students righting about a sport they have very little knowledge of, not worth the money
I still think “what if” Shearer went to UTD instead. With the class of 92 behind him he’d of cleared 300 PL goals and multiple titles. He got those goals with the likes of Darren Ambrose and Keith Gillespie crossing the ball. Imagine if he had Giggs and Beckham.
Frightening
Espwcially with beckham
Dream duo
If he did come, he would’ve won multiple champions leagues too
I crazy that he knows he could have accomplished that and he still says he doesn’t regret it. Nothing like playing in your home town, especially in Newcastle
As a Liverpool fan that sounds absolutely sickening
Alex ferguson epitomises every united fans smug response of ‘didn’t want him anyway’ or ‘it’s a Micky mouse cup anyway’ anytime they don’t get what they want. Same way he labelled Gerrard as not a top top player when he preferred Liverpool over United. Ferguson had some sort of complex going on
Well that’s just bullshit. You don’t become the best manager of all time by being petty and “smug”. He obviously just preferred Hirst as a player at the time. He than went after shearer again so pls stfu with your “didn’t want him anyway” he never said that, don’t spin it for your argument
@@matthewhiggins8976 lmao did you watch the video?
I'm a United fan - and I DEFINITELY wanted him! I can understand him preferring Newcastle to us (boyhood club after all) ... but I must admit that losing him to BLACKBURN still smarts a bit!
Alan shearer is the epitome of a top class finisher, he acts like a inspiration to aspiring and budding strikers, if henry didn't exist nobody could deny that Shearer is the best PL forward of all time
he is better than henry
@@bemo8943 no he's not lol
@Ian Black Larsson is not even close to these people
Arkos 11 I’m a Newcastle and Celtic supporter. Alan shearer was brilliant. Henry was brilliant. And so was Larsson. There’s no debate on THAT
It's difficult to pick one out of shearer and Henry but Larson? Bwahwhahahaha
There will never be another like Shearer, he turned down money and trophies to play for his boyhood club, massive respect to a true legend of the game. Kids nowadays are more interested in rediculous amounts of money than loyalty to their homes. Shearer was recently asked if he had to choose between Newcastle and Man U again, who would he choose, Shearer replied, "Newcastle again..... and again, and again, and again."
Same as Totti
Well, this is quite the peak, huh? To have Alan Shearer become a columnist... it doesn't get much better than that, eh? He's a world-class striker that ironically proves that you don't really need trophies to make a stake on the game.
So true. You have to be GREAT to do that. Can't think of many...Trying to name one...Errr....Well for me Le Tissier. He was different class. Special player. Any more you can think of?
@@rooneye um... I'm not entirely sure. If you had asked me like... 6 years ago, Luis Suarez would have been easy, but then he went to Barca and immediately won the treble, so no. Jay-Jay Okocha is a good one too, but there's likely some that I'm missing.
What's ironic about that?
@DEMONIC MACHINE yeah. That man needs a trophy at some point, right? He surely can't have the similar fate to Van Persie at Arsenal, right? Being extremely good but winning nothing at all. Hopefully that's not Kane's fate.
Yep - he did win the premier league though remember.
This video came out few secs after The Athletic announce they had sign Alan Shearer on a multi compound deal. Couldnt be a better timing than this.
What a fantastic coincidence, as the athletic and tifo have no contact and famously despise each other
This genius must have watched the video
I know. It’s almost like it was co-ordinated in some way... 🤔
The youth today won't know the feeling of searching teletext, on a Saturday afternoon & seeing your team win
Then getting excited to watch MOTD that night
There are so many things that they cannot appreciate. Waiting an entire week to watch a TV show, especially when it had ended on a cliffhanger.
I was around 10 years old & my cousin brother taught me that about teletext and the numbers to press to the footy news. It also helped my reading too as English was a 2nd language at home.
@Colloquial Soliloquy Lottery numbers were one of them if you missed out the live show
@Colloquial Soliloquy Nah, i read somewhere once on Facebook that its gone. Everyone now has satellite TV, BBC has the Red button. Also TV guide is there. No one even has the big ass televisions anymore.
@Colloquial Soliloquy You could book them well technically pause ring the number on your house phone as peter kay put it Booked It Packed It Fucked Off
Despite me being a Sunderland fan, I've always respected Shearer. He was a top striker, could've signed for any top club, and yet he chose the club he supported. In a reality where very few people have real club loyalty, seeing that is just wow!
The loyalty for the club amazes me.That kind of person is the best .He never leaves you in bad times
@@gencij5175 Newcastle was his third choice he first joined Southampton then Blackburn he wanted to sign for Man Utd but had to settle for Newcastle that dose not sound like loyalty to his home town club.
@@PatrickKelly-lz3pv why didnt he sign for man utd ?
@@gencij5175 He said Fergie kept him hanging on, it certainly wasn't because of his loyalty to Newcastle.
Complete striker for Me!!! His finishing left/right, heading, control, pace (before his big injury), hold up/positioning, all round forward that's set the benchmark!!!
Brave to the point of recklessness. I was there when the unveiled him. Cant remember it raining though.
Always a thank you from a Blackburn rovers fan.
What an addition to the team with Alan Shearer! Congratulations!
I was too young to remember Shearer in the 90s as I was a kid. But i remember him at Newcastle and Bobby Robson. He was a lethal striker, the goals i use to see on motd weekends.
I really like this channel; certainly has to be one of the best on CZcams.
Cool story, look forward to reading his output
Imagine Shearer being player manager at 25 in the Prem? That would be one of the most mental things ever. They would have a SHIT manager, but be able to score goals, so not sure how they'd do tbh lol
Had the honor of meeting him during the filming of Purely Belter. Legend, and an icon of the game
What film was that again, ringing a bell that
Guinness original posters name makes that quite ironic lol 😂
Santiago Muñez was better, let's be honest...
I always look for this comment on any Newcastle video
Literally just finished watching Goal😂
disagree. Newcastle gave him his big break and he repaid it by abandoning them for an unbalanced Real side. he got his comeuppance with the benchwarming role and that tofu endorsement deal!!
Only the OGs would know 😂
Naah... Munez was good becoz he play a long side Gavin Harris... he even follow Harris to play with Madrid...
educative stuff, cute narration and simply awesome. much love from kenya. plus am the only nufc fan in kenya
That's how you announce a new signing! Poetic and and made for great content as always
I recall watching Euro 96 Relived over the Summer. Shearer was great!
Very good videos .... always look forward to your videos
ALAN SHEARER! KING! Well played Tifo
That’s fantastic. Great player. Top bloke.
Naaaaaah, "An Unlikely Detour Through Leamington Spa" is surely one of YT's great phrases. I know it's easy comedy to emphasise the quote by putting it on a headline-ish banner, and that it was essentially handed on a plate by the real life narrative itself, but still... Pure poetry... The delivery, the words, they're original and it all makes it... 👏👏👏👏👏
Being nine years old when this happened, it was like all my dreams came true. One of my great childhood sporting memories.
Love the content Tifo football
Pls never stop the vids
I was there at his presentation! What a day!
Actually, scorer of the *second* most premier league hat-tricks.
1st without asterisks
@@manawearblack no one has asterisks next to their total...
260 EPL Goals. He had two big injuries in his career and he started playing football before the EPL started. I used to think Harry Kane would overtake him but now I'm not so sure.
hes on 146 and hes only 27 as long as his usual month or so seasonal injuries doesnt become any more long term id say he will maybe just beat it...but with the way hes going so far this season its henrys and kdbs assist record of 20 hes looking to beat first lol
when i was like 9 i asked my parents to re-name me Alan.. True story!
Not Alan?
@MCFC GH looool xD
I was an eleven year old Man United fan glued to teletext that summer, gutted when he signed for Newcastle.
It so awesome he won the premier league with Blackburn, some people never won the premier league ......... Gary Lineiker
What a legend!
i guessed it was fabrizio... but it is interesting to see a former world class player giving insights in written word. Tv punditry always felt like a limitation.
Shearer is the reason that I support Newcastle! Best there ever was. Almost 20 years later and still a member of the Toon army. Yeah thanks Alan!
Legend!
Tifo please make a video on the project big picture
I like the animator's use of the Newcastle Brown Ale star for the 'growing cast of stars'
Newcastle Brown Ale brewed in Yorkshire.
The greatest player I've ever seen.
Whose voice is this? It's so calming that I hear Tifo videos without watching the screen sometimes.
Joe Devine
Sir Alan Shearer.
Only real ones remember Santiago Munez
Haha.
A lot of brown envelopes ✉️ back then....would love a "tell all" story about the transfer windows during those eras
Shearer is legend is our "local hero" HWTL
He's the reason I support Newcastle United. I was only 10 when Euro 96 was happening and he was my favourite player and when he joined Newcastle, that was my team from then on. So glad he didn't join Man United otherwise I'd be supporting them right now
King shearer ⚫️⚪️
Best striker in Premier League history ⚫️⚪️
please make video about guti haz
I’d really be interested in a tifo video about the rise and fall of Liverpool goalkeeper Karius and re-emergence at Union Berlin.
Can you please do Carlos Tevez Transfer Next! How he moved from a 3rd party group to West Ham then to United. Thanks 😎
They've already done a vid
Done already mate.
Good times, back when there was hope and ambition :(
Never forget the day he signed for Newcastle. Finally they English were out doing the Famous Glasgow Rangers. Now look at the state of English football. Made a complete mockery of the game and turned it into an almost no contact sport.
"I WISH" as Kevin Keegan said him, Shearer and Newcastle won the. league that year. With Asprilla and Ginola. And Middlesborough nearby that season with Juninho and Emerson
just a fun fact, Wayne Rooney has the second highest totals goals in the premier leauge with 208 and 253 in all competitions.
He also has the 3rd most assists in the league. he also only played 2 seasons as an out and out striker to do so. If he less of a team player he'd have scored more than shearer
206 Newcastle goals is crazy , that's insane
Jack walker said he will only sell Alan Shearer to Manchester United is over my dead 💀 body.
260 is unheard of , unheard off
That dig towards Indy Kaila
Shearer was one of the best strikers in the world was fantastic for Newcastle, Blackburn and the Premier League in general as well as for the England team. Seems like a good bloke too. Typical of the sore loser that Ferguson was not to have the decency and good grace to call him back and wish him well on his move to his hometown club. As an Everton fan, will always remember that brilliant volley he scored against us. Class act on and off the pitch 👏
Do a video about saint maximin
Yugo can you do a video about "project big picture" please.
Next please do a video on " Project Big Picture".
Greatest striker England ever produced
GOAT
Best centre forward of all time
Shearer was absolutely amazing...one of the best ever. But.. that great, exciting Newcastle side was never quite the same after he joined. The team was no longer defined by flair and freedom and things became more about getting it in the box for Shearer. He often went missing in big matches against quality defenses. (He had injuries too -- I know)
Also, when you look at all the drama that unfolded at NUFC during his time there it has to be said perhaps Shearer wasn't the best captain in terms of running a dressing room.
Before I get lynched by Geordies, these are just observations,
Yes, after Shearer joined, Newcastle got worse, that's a fact. But it's not because of Shearer joining, it's because Keegan resigned and his title challenging team got subsequently dismantled by Kenny Dagleish and then completely destroyed by Ruud Gullit. Shearer was the one constant bright spark during the late 90's and early 2000's for Newcastle. Going missing in big games is not something I recall, whenever Newcastle won a big game it was due to Shearer, when we lost a big game it was because of our defence and players like Titus Bramble and Steven Taylor. Even Messi goes missing in big games sometimes. I don't know Shearer personally nor was I present in the dressing room during his days at Newcastle, so unless you were, you can't say that his captaincy was a problem. He was a leader on the pitch and you can't blame him for players like Bowyer, Bellamy, Dyer and Emre, it's the captains job to be a leader but you can't expect him to be responsible for the actions of every players. Just to add, that when Bellamy started being a prick, he had the absolute shit kicked out of him by Shearer on the training pitch and he was subsequently loaned out to Celtic, that might not be leadership but it's the same type of thing Roy Keane or Big Dunc would have done, both of which have been amazing captains. All I know is that no matter how shit Newcastle were, who our manager was or where we were in the league, Shearer was banging the goals in left right and centre. Same old Shearer, always scoring.
That would be a walking race for Ramon Vega.
Aguero broke his hat-trick record back in January!
Still 26 goals to go. However, I am sure he will break it, if he stays at Manchester City
@@rudranshu65sengupta14 I have no idea what you’re counting.
@@thedude5600 The number of goals of course. I could be wrong about the number though.
@@rudranshu65sengupta14 I’m saying he’s scored more goals, saying he’s scored more hat-tricks.
@@rudranshu65sengupta14 aguero is 80 premier league goals behind Shearer's record - he won't break it
If it's Alex Scott, Micah Richards, Robbie Savage, Jenas or Danny Murphy then I may have to give up with this channel.
Arguably England's greatest ever no 9.
Can you make a video about the king of Manchester United
I thought Sergio Aguero overtook Shearer's hat-trick count with his 12 vs Shearer's 11.
This was probably the worst day as a Blackburn fan.... he was the difference between a decent team and Premier League winners, and Blackburn never really recovered from his loss. Got some great players in and played some great football over the years... but can't think of any world class players that went through Blackburn after Shearer.
@Roy M
They still finished 7th in his last season at Blackburn despite the many goals he scored (I believe 37 in all competitions yet Blackburn won nothing).
Alan and Joe Tifo podcast please, doesn't even need to be about football!
2:13 Is that Patridge??
Andy Cole was quite good
Ermmm....Shearer said on True Geordie podcast that the only reason he didn't join united was that he waited for an offer and never got one. Fergie told him to wait that they were working on something.
He said he couldn't wait any longer. This is different from what is being presented here.

'Well you could go to Manchester United and regularly challenge for trophies or you could come here where Kevin will resign in 6 months, Dalglish will come in, sell most of our best players and bring in his past-it mates like Rush and Barnes and hopefully we'll go from being a couple of defensive signings away from winning the league to mid table nobodies within a year.'
