  • Avatar Legend of Korra Season 4 Finale!
This is part 49 of my Avatar Legend of Korra reaction and commentary. Wait... 49? There are 52 episodes of Korra... I watched ep 1 and 2 together, so there should be 51 parts. I guess I screwed up somewhere. All well...
Anyway, In this reaction video, I will be reacting to Legend of Korra season 4 episode 13: The Last Stand, the Legend of Korra series finale.
Legend of Korra Season 4 ends as we reach the finale. It's been a long journey. I'm especially proud of Korra for all of her growth. And not only her. So many characters have shown such tremendous personal growth since season 1. Bolin grew up and became a little more rounded. Mako matured and became more generous. Asami learned to be a leader and to forgive. Tenzin learned to accept himself. Lin learned to put down her anger. Varrick learned to treat people better. Zhu Li learned to stand up for herself. And in this episode, Kuvira learns to let go of her pain and end her destruction.
The Legend of Korra season 4 finale is a fantastic one, full of action, emotion, and real love.
(Plus epilogue 2 to Fruit Saga)

LOK isn't perfect but people do unnecessarily criticize or rather dramatize the smallest details while giving ATLA passes. I always hated that hypocrisy amongst the fanbase. What's worse for me though is how there are a lot of subjective conservative judgement regarding the politics of the show. Or the fact that some fans can't deal with technological progress within 7 decades or accept that the original characters did not turn out to be saints. Those kind of arguments against LOK are just annoying because they're mostly subjective. Just because you don't like a storyline or behavior, doesn't mean it's bad writing. That's not supposed to dismiss LOK's legitimate problems though. Just saying. Eventually it's a solid show and personally I always thought it was much more enjoyable than ATLA but that may had a lot to do with the fact that ATLA was more of a kids show whereas LOK was far more mature and dark.

Admittedly I missed all those romantic signs people talk about when I first watched the series. And to be honest, I still felt the same when I saw it the 2nd and 3rd time around. And that is me trying to pay closer attention, not because I'm against their relationship. It's strange because I saw those signs that people talk about as something that happens to friends irl. It was too soon and too fast for me that's why. What with Korra soon after recovering, she'd get together with Asami. I feel like the buildup is there when they bonded as friends, but the romantic attraction stage was not as clear as I wished to have seen and then they were forced to be together just like that in the end when they barely have spoken and taken the time to be together again. Maybe they have done so "offscreen" and it's only because of budget issues that it's lacking in that department... I don't know. I feel it's a shame that the franchise wasn't given much for what it can potentially reach. I imagine if they only had better support, the franchise would've explored Korra in better heights. I agree with Goodwin when he said that the end doesn't have to be that Korra has to end with somebody. To me, since the comic is there, the writers could've also expanded their romantic attraction stage there, not when they're already a couple. Also, I don't know if people would agree with me here, but the attraction/courting stage is usually the most interesting stage in a relationship. I would've wanted to see it. It beats most in terms of being already in the relationship in terms of love story. ☺

7:10 Thank god you put this into words. Some people don't like Book 4 and I can't seem to understand why, because B4 is the one that makes LoK a genius show. It concludes the narrative of Korra's growth as a character and a person, from an impulsive and reckless kid to a mature and wise adult. And a great deal of that was in the acceptance of her own vulnerability, that her preconceived notion of what the avatar had to be was false.
Korra is probably my favorite Avatar character because of this development. Of course, perhaps I identify with her depression as well, as someone who suffers it, it really spoke to me,

FYI: When I first watched this finale, I wondered about the mechanics of why a new spirit portal was created randomly; then I remembered that Vaatu said he was the first spirit to broke through to the physical realm... since Kuvira is basically using the same Vaatu spirit energy lasers, the amount of energy from the spirit vines created by UnAVatuu from season 2 tore a hole between the physical realm and the Spirit World (which implies that this was how Vaatu was able to break through to the physical world)
I just love how everything still implicitly explained within the context we were provided!

(𝘉𝘛𝘞 𝘐 𝘸𝘳𝘰𝘵𝘦 𝘢 𝘭𝘰𝘵 𝘴𝘰 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘧𝘪𝘳𝘴𝘵 𝘱𝘢𝘳𝘵 𝘪𝘴 𝘬𝘰𝘳𝘳𝘢𝘴𝘢𝘮𝘪, 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘴𝘦𝘤𝘰𝘯𝘥 𝘱𝘢𝘳𝘵 𝘪𝘴 𝘢𝘣𝘰𝘶𝘵 𝘬𝘰𝘳𝘳𝘢, 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘵𝘩𝘪𝘳𝘥 𝘱𝘢𝘳𝘵 𝘪𝘴 𝘢𝘭𝘭 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘱𝘰𝘴𝘪𝘵𝘪𝘷𝘦𝘴 𝘪 𝘧𝘰𝘶𝘯𝘥 𝘪𝘯 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘴𝘩𝘰𝘸 𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘭𝘢𝘴𝘵 𝘱𝘢𝘳𝘵 𝘪𝘴 𝘸𝘩𝘢𝘵 𝘪 𝘵𝘩𝘰𝘶𝘨𝘩𝘵 𝘰𝘧 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘴𝘩𝘰𝘸 𝘪𝘯 𝘤𝘰𝘯𝘵𝘳𝘢𝘴𝘵 𝘵𝘰 𝘈𝘛𝘓𝘈, 𝘺𝘰𝘶 𝘥𝘰𝘯'𝘵 𝘩𝘢𝘷𝘦 𝘵𝘰 𝘳𝘦𝘢𝘥 𝘪𝘵 𝘢𝘭𝘭 if you don't want to.)
    1) For the romance korrasami ending, They couldn't show more of course because nickelodeon wouldn't allow it. But it was a breakthrough in animation history as it was the first huge lgbt moment for a main character in a kid's animation show. Korra was the stepping stone for many shows down the road that would get more freedom on tv and portray lgbt couples in kid's shows.
I personally liked it a lot because it's one of the only ones that feels more subtle and actually progresses slowly for a romance in the universe. The more you watch it, the more signs you see.
I didn't like Korrasami that much before but upon rewatch, it really grows on you particularly as a film student where you try to show subtext and development that is not too overt. I feel the problem with many animated shows is they don't build enough or make it too childish with many overt scenes that lead nowhere until the end.I mean korra was definitely the closest with asami and the hints were there in season 4 from the blushing to the conversations to the writing of letters only to asami.
It's true that it's hard to see how you make the jump from best friends to romantic feelings but sometimes it just happens. It's just hard to fathom but they were very close, it would have seemed clearer of course if it was mako and korra that were that close. They of course couldn't show what korra was actually thinking as well.
I particularly like the ending for the character of korra because it seems she is not rash and impulsive anymore compared to how she was with the love triangle, it's just an invitation to a first date and nothing more. It's like the start of a new journey and a new adventure for them as they enter a new romantic relationship, a new world and a new phase in their life. (It actually feels less unrealistic then Kataang and their final everlasting love kiss that did feel like coming out of nowhere since their last scene together was that rejection in ember's). The fact that korra and asami didn't kiss as well was because it would have felt like coming out of nowhere particularly on a first date.
I liked how it really builds and feels actually more like an adult relationship, it feels very real and the end is picture perfect.
    Anyway that's my take.
    2) I feel Korra's arc was much more complex than many people make it out to be and mirrors our world amazingly.
Avatar was about a boy needing to become the avatar in a world that needed him with clear ww2 themes and a fight between good and evil.
Korra was about the avatar needing to become human in a world that doesn't want her also pushing the aspects that today's world is more grey than it was yesterday and things are much less black and white; Being a hero is not enough anymore.
    Korra portrays that very well
Her character arc from being sheltered all her life to making mistakes to learning from them and growing up and to understand how to fit in a world that doesn't want you is just an incredible arc that makes hers much better than aang's and probably my favourite arc after Zuko's in the franchise. Korra was flawed as a person and had to live up to a huge legacy as an avatar and has a show and while she did mistakes along her road, she managed amazingly at the end and showed great progress over the show's run to understand her inner self, what she needed to get past and finally understand the role she had in this world.
It's an incredible arc that many haters just like to say instead that either korra loses all the time or that korra is a mary sue, which weirdly put together means the exact opposite of each other.
    3) Here's a list of things that i loved and that i just cooked up to show you why korra is great and why i love it:
    For me what I loved:
-korra being so different than aang
    -korra's arc
    -ptsd themes handled so well
-amon being the most menacing villain in the franchise before the reveal
    -the technology mixed with bending
-the world being more grey not accepting her compared to aang who was needed
-the beginnings episodes with the incredible animation and ghibli feel to it
-the journeys to the spirit world with tenzin or with korra and iroh
    -toph's return
-"When we are hitting our lowest point, we are open to the greatest change" (aang)
-kuvira's parralel to mao and making her cause feel just at the start.
-the characters when they make mistakes, own up to them.
-aang's family and how he wasn't a perfect father
    -Tenzin (jk simmons)
-The music surpassing avatar that even ATLA fans agree on
-the animation in some parts surpassing avatar
    -the lack of fillers
    -the return of the airbenders
    -zaheer
-the red lotus team particularly ghazan
    -Bolin's comedy
-I personally liked and found the eska bolin dynamic funny
-the parallels to politics with populism, freedom, anarchy and totalitarianism.
-the continuation from avatar parallels with history with mao parallels and hong kong.
    -metal city
-the relationship between su and lin
    -probending is a cool sport
    -Tenzin's children
-jinora being the true legacy of aang
    -the last scene
    and so much more...
Also the only thing i hate with a burning passion in korra is Wu and his singing.
    4) So in Conclusion:
Avatar is pretty close to perfect and one of my favourite tv shows of all time while korra is a great show in it's own right.
Avatar has the best supporting cast while korra has the best main character (but it takes a few seasons to see her greatness like zuko.)
Avatar is a better more simpler story and very well put together while korra is more ambitious but flawed with some fantastic mature themes, villains and animation sequences.
Korra might be much more flawed than avatar but compared to other animated shows or tv shows, i still like it much more than 90% of tv i watched. It's not the original show but nothing will be like it and i'm okay with that.

Very nice analysis. I agree that Korra's arc was very complex and handled quite well overall. I definitely don't see her as a Mary Sue, and her losing is important and is part of her character growth. As I've mentioned, I think people confuse character weakness with bad characters. Korra has moments of weakness but they feel real and they are handled in a way that is relatable and also useful to me watching, and I'm sure to many others as well.

I know I’m usually a Bolin fanboy, but it’s Avatar Korra-the bisexual brown girl who fought through her trauma and saved the world multiple times, that taught me about myself more than probably any other character in the franchise.
The scene between Korra and Kuvira is my favorite in the entire series. Korra was often her own worst enemy, spending so much of her life fighting and forcing things into fruition, but with Kuvira she finds solace in showing compassion to what is essentially a darker version of herself. We need to be able to show ourselves compassion and forgiveness in our lives. We will experience trauma and hardship. We will have to change in order to get better. We will have to learn to let go, in order to be our best selves. It’s incredibly telling that Korra grew so much, but still felt like she has more to learn in order to be her best self. In a way, that is true spirituality and essentially what Korra needed more than anything.

Korra's journey and growth are what always brings me back to this series over and over. It's so emotional and impactful. I love Korra as a character and this season's ending really gave me the feeling that Korra became a fully realized avatar beyond just mastering the four elements/avatar state. The Korra and Tenzin moment always gets me.

  • @bjones6441
    @bjones6441 Před 3 lety +2

I really like the ending of Korra. It has a very 'And Life Goes On' feel to it. Like the finale of Avatar was amazing and triumphant. But the Korra finale is more subdued and, in a way, 'adult' in tone. It's a finale I like more the older I get, which I think is significant.
I know some people found it boring or disappointing in comparison to Avatar's finale, but I think the two shows have different messages to put out. To me, Avatar was all about choosing your own path, regardless of where you come from or what other people TELL you your destiny is.
Korra, to me, was about acceptance. Accepting who you are and what your limitations/strengths are and how important it is to allow yourself to grow as a person through experiencing the world.
Both seem to be about learning and change, but they come at those concepts from different angles.

Though I'm glad it even happened for me and many others to discover you and your channel(these are my favorite animation series; I'm always hopeful of more within the Avatar Verse to come). I remember stumbling onto your reaction to The Avatar and The Fire Lord in July and being fascinated by how different your reaction style was from basically every other reaction channel, and I'm glad I stuck around. I've always been of the opinion that ATLA and Korra are both incredible, but your reactions have increased my appreciation for both series tenfold. Thank you for being such an amazing content creator - the insight you've provided is invaluable, and it's been a joy to watch you connect with these characters and stories that I love so much.
Also, if you aren't already aware, the ViacomCBS CEO has recently hinted that their streaming service could be expanding the Avatar franchise with a new show - not a direct confirmation, of course, but we now know for sure that they're open to the idea of a new series. Maybe we'll finally be getting another animated exploration of the world of Avatar in the not so distant future.

thank you Alex, I stumbled across your channel in the middle of ATLA, and since then have religiously followed your video uploads. a few months ago I felt a little lost in my life, but your perspective on things struck me to the core and I have taken on board so many things. one of the biggest issues I had was being too proud to admit being wrong and admit that I wasn't doing the best I could. your emphasis on humility and emptying your cup (especially during ATLA) has changed my life.

That's fine. Almost all shows take a few episodes at least to get their bearings (some shows take whole seasons). I think that it's part of the natural part of the creation process. Sometimes you are learning who the characters are and what the show is as you create them.
