This was shortly before we lost both Duane and Berry Oakley to motorcycle accidents. Such a tragedy. I cannot tell you how much we played Live at Fillmore East. I think it may be the best live album ever.
This is from the Allmans' September 1970 Fillmore East show filmed for a Public TV broadcast that never happened. As others have said, you need to listen to the 22:40 min version from the March 1971 At Fillmore East album.
Grateful Dead and Little Feat are also bands with two drummers
Been listening to this for 54 years and it never gets old, bought the double album when it came out and still have it.
I feel for the youth of today for the simple reason that the music industry has let them down. Fifty years from now this generation wont have this type of music that my generation has enjoyed, fifty years from now this music will still be entertaining people. Not saying there aren’t great musicians out there but when i go to concerts to listen to the new generation it is mostly old gray heads such as my self there enjoying the event.
You need to hear the Live at Fillmore East version of Whipping Post. The best by far. 👍
This is Filmore East
@martyjansing2675 They did Fillmore East twice. The other one was featured on the Live album & was 22 minutes long. Epic track.
The Tedeschi Trucks band uses 2 drummers today and they have a direct connection to the Allman Brothers band. Derek Trucks is the nephew of Butch Trucks, the drummer on the right in this video. As a teenage guitar prodigy, Derek played with a later version of the Allman Brothers band in the 90s. I highly recommend checking out the Tedeschi Trucks band's videos.
You do need to check out TTB, Susan Tedeschi is a amazing singer and Derek an other worldly guitarist. You need to do live videos of them.
Greatest live album ever,a masterpiece.
Great reaction! You might enjoy Chris Stapleton performing this song at a tribute to Gregg Allman! Gregg gave him a standing ovation at the end! ❤️🔥✌🏻🫶🏻
Yip, 2 drummers. Jai Johanny Johanson was one of them, after Dickey left us last month he remains as the sole surviving original Allman Brother's Band member. In the 1960's, the British invasion happened, bringing about a new renaissance in rock and roll, mirroring our music back to us at a time when we had forgotten it. The Allman Brothers are one of the few American Bands that had this same reverence for the old blues masters, which they prove 100% on At Fillmore east. Stormy Monday, You Don't Love Me, Statesboro Blues, Done Somebody Wrong - stellar. Remember what it means to be white boys playing these songs in the south at that time, they took some shit for it for sure. I never really thought about that when I played these records to death as a teenager in the 1980's, I just thought it was good music and it had soul, which it is and it does. But context is important, don't forget it. RIP Dickey Betts, and Duane and Greg and Berry and Butch.
Good call! Duane Allman on the first guitar solo, Dickey Betts on the second. The two drummers are Butch Trucks and Jaimoe , founding members and played on every track they ever did. Jaimoe is the only living member from the original lineup ✌️
" In Memory Of Elizabeth Reed " off the Fillmore East album is awesome !!! They were cooking !!!
Listen to the entire Live at Fillmore East album. Stormy Monday is a favorite
Stormy
@@musicairplanes4884 thanks! I fixed the typo. 🌻
Lost my vinyl many years ago, when Dickey passed last month I bought the CD again on Ebay, love that record. When I was a teenager in the 1980's, I took a few guitar lessons, my teacher gave me a bunch of papers with chords and stuff on them, including the ones for Statesboro Blues, so I went and found a copy at a swap meet. I would sit for hours in my garage jamming along to that record. Did you know that Dickey wrote Elizabeth Reed by being inspired by a grave in an old graveyard IIRC ?
Saw the Allman Brothers play for 2 solid hours once. All 6 songs were awesome! 😂
That’s what I remember as well. 😂 Damn I miss em’. 🍻
This whole concert is legendary!!
Whipping Post, live at Atlanta Pop, July, 1970 will blow your socks off...
Gotta go listen to that. A few years ago, film was discovered of Jimi's set, it's amazing. I was 3 years old when that went down, but you should read about or find a vid about that festival, all the naked hippies everywhere etc., was a different time for sure.
I was lucky enough to see these guys twice the same day. In 1971 they played in Clearwater in the afternoon and in Tampa that night.
Allman Brothers are a pretty deep rabbit hole to go down. Just a suggestion for the next one would be "One Way Out" from this same show (or the studio version), then maybe "Midnight Rider" or "Statesboro Blues."
We just lost Dickey Betts, leaving Jaimoe the last original member still around. R.I.P. Dickey Betts
I think it's awesome that you sometimes do studio then live of the same song. That's the way everybody should do it!! 👍
You're not tripping. The studio version definitely highlights the vocals more than the live version. Both are amazing performances.
Re: Greg’s vocal… the live versions were always at a slightly faster tempo, and as you hear, they really brought the thunder! But the slightly slower tempo of the studio version gave Greg’s voice more room to breathe. 👍
The two drummers and Barry Oakley on bass, steal the show.
The Grateful Dead have two drummers. . . The Allmans also have two lead guitarists: Duane Allman and Dickie Betts (who just passed a couple of weeks ago).
Tedeschi Trucks Band has two drummers carrying on from the Allmans
Doobie Brothers had two drummer's.
They played this song differently every time. They had nearly a telepathic connection with each other, gave each other subtle clues about where they were heading, but there was still a lot of feeling their way through. The song had a basic structure, but the improvisational sections didn’t have specific lengths or destinations a lot of the times, and the length of the song varied by up to 15-20 minutes. They might go into another song and come back to it. They could do this, and no other band really could to that level, because they were master musicians and because they knew each other so well. They were hypnotizing when you saw them live.
I am so happy you got to check this out live. Thanks for sharing!.
One Way Out is FANTASTIC !! you must hear it!
Greatest American band.
They're in the mix for sure. I think it's between them, the Dead,Zappa and the Mothers and Little Feat. I'd throw Steely Dan in,but they weren't really a band. More a songwriting and production consortium with guest musicians. At least after their first 3 albums.
Talking Heads deserve a nod too,IMO,but that's a whole different vibe.
Stormy Monday is the best track on this album ✌️
Keep in mind that most singers will hold back a bit in a live situation. They have to be able to sing the whole show, so they’re extremely conscious of not blowing their voice out early. In the studio they have the luxury of being able to rest afterward, even for days if necessary. In a live show, it’s more of a marathon than a sprint.
They had two lead guitars, too.
the 23 minute version is the best imo but cant expect you to listen to this 3 days in a row XD. somewhere down the line maybe
NOT MY CROSS TO BEAR
Just got done watching the reaction to the studio version. As a musician, I always liked the live version better. I saw them in '74 in Houston at the Jeppesen stadium.
You right! You right!
The Allman brothers employed 2 great drummers. The Grateful Dead also employed 2 great drummers, who also ran their side project called the Rythm Devils who were heard by more people than realized. They did most of the background, non-vocal music for Apocalypse Now.
You stumbled onto some good music. Glad you have an open mind. I know you'll be sharing this and turning others on to it. Incredible musicians and great music.
"Soulshine" is a must, but catalog is enormous prior to Duane's passing as well as after.
Should be noted that "Soulshine" was written by Warren Haynes. He joined ABB in the late 80's.
I had the opportunity to see them live @ Painters Mills Music Fair in Owings Mills Md. Duane died shortly after ✌️💙😎
The Doobie Brothers has 2 drummers. Great reaction....
I'm an old man and I almost always like the studio better. I suggest listening to studio first.
To “See” the musicianship in this live performance! Remains a Must See! Historically Epic!
Many bands have used two or more drummers, The Surfaris, The Allman Brothers : Two drummers from 1968-1982 and 1989-1991, and two drummers and a percussionist from 1991-2014
38 Special: Two drummers from 1974-1987
ABBA: Two drummers during their 1977 Australian Tour
Snarky Puppy: Three drummers and many percussionist
King Crimson: Two drummers from 1994 onwards, and now tour with three
The Grateful Dead: Two drummers throughout most of their career
The Doobie Brothers: Two drummers, Michael Hossack and John Hartman, then Hartman and Keith Knudsen .
Filmore East.. legendary
One thing to keep in mind is this was filmed for a PBS special and was supposed to be their big break. Gregg's mic was screwed up and couldn't be heard at all for several of their songs. That probably explains at least a little of your letdown. The reason this performance is important is it's pretty much the only live performance of Duane Allman and Berry Oakley before their deaths.
Way back in the day, 1975, the singer Gregg Allman was married to Cher.
Yes it is better live. What a band!! I think that the mix can easily be off on live recordings.
This was a Sept. 1970 recording from Fillmore East. Its good no doubt, but the real juggernaut version, { almost 23 minutes long } and there best version of this song IMO, was recorded in March 1971. It was then added to there double LP, Live at Fillmore East, which was released later that year. It should be required listening, to any fan of Blues/Rock/Fusion. In fact the whole double LP should be required listening, it is that good. To this day, some 53 years later, I have never heard anything else to rival it.
@deborahdean, this performance was a year before the show from the Fillmore album, which was in 1971.
Great reaction man. Man I saw the Allman Bros like 7 times in the 90s early 2000s. Yeah talk about just a bad a$$ show every time. 😊👏👏🥰 the band that I’ve seen most in my like. The Allman Brothers. ❤❤
You must hear In Memory of Elizabeth Reed from Live at the Fillmore East and One Way Out from Eat a Peach. Wore out the grooves to the vinyl then, but happily have them on the more eternal CD format.
you would love Tobacco Road by Edgar winter. the live version is outstanding
The road goes on forever my friend, enjoy the ride and the slide 👍👊😎🇨🇦
"LIVE ! Music is Better ! Bumper Stickers Should be Issued ."
The Greatful Dead and The Doobie Brothers featured 2 Drummers at about the same time as The ABB
I agree I favor the studio version as well, but I do thoroughly enjoy the guitar solos in the live version.
King Crimson went 3 drummers in recent tour.
This is why I like studio over live. You nailed it. I think there might be another live version that is better.
yeah l love the studio version
Anything by The Allman Brothers. Southern rock, blues rock at it's best. You gotta react to, 'Statesboro Blues', if you haven't already. Do it from their 'Live At The Fillmore East' album. You'll see what I mean.
Agree completely!!
Stevie Ray Vaughn is another LEGEND
Duane wanted 2 drummers for the ABB because James Brown had 2 drummers in his band . Off the top of my head here are some other bands that had at least era's with 2 drummers in the band , The Grateful Dead , The Charlie Daniels Band , .38 Special , The Doobie Brothers and on the Current scene , former Allman Brothers Band guitarist from 1999 - 2014 , Derek Trucks & his wife , Susan Tedeschi's project , The Tedeschi-Trucks Band use 2 drummers .
I agree with you that Gregg sounds drowned out on this track. Listen to One Way Out from this show (Live at the Filmore East) he sounds great. Makes it even stranger that he sounds weak on this song.
I'm with you... Studio version is my pick. The tempo on the live version is too hectic. Still...a great Allman Bros performance!
I completely agree with you. The instrumentals were great, the vocals were drown out.
If you really want to hear outstanding vocals on this song, check out Frank Zappa - Whipping Post live!!
I absolutely love the Allman Brothers music. This particular recording/video isn't quite... I'm not sure what... Tell you what, watch/listen to this other CZcams video which is, to me, uncommonly great, and see if it doesn't rock you out. Maybe it's the black and white filming, but I doubt it. (video): "The Allman Brothers Band One Way Out At Fillmore East 1971 HQ".
I commented before but never got an answer, but I’m surprised you are not listening to music with headphones! The music is incredibly better with complete ear to ear stereo separation and there are instruments you sometimes can’t quite hear without them! Not sure if you have ever experienced the difference?
This was filmed for a PBS special, but there was a problem with the sound so it was never used. The recording for the album was better, so give a listen to Live at Fillmore East album for a better vocal live.
The Allman Brothers is one of those groups where live performances were much better than the studio recorded versions. And the studio recordings were fantastic.
The lead vocal is a little under mixed...plus, he's phrasing it a little differently...AND...they're playing the song much faster than the studio version. So he doesn't have as much time to linger on the lyrics
James Brown was the first with two drummers. Charlie Daniels and a few others had two drummers.
Next - Ain’t My Cross to Bear
Check out Billy Cobham “Pleasant Pheasant “ it’s a super jam
Tedeschi Trucks Band & The Grateful Dead (mostly) use 2 drummers. This live version from a Fillmore East concert is not THE version from the Fillmore East release...which is much longer and miked properly. This one ain't shabby but that other version is the deal. That whole release is amazing actually.
Southern Rock is good Live.
I agree with you about Gregg's voice on the live recording. That's the thing about live recordings. Very often the mix isn't great, especially for a 50-something year old recording. And maybe Gregg's voice was off that night. I've seen a much older version of Gregg several times and occasionally his voice was not 'on' for a given night. Still sounded better than most singers I've heard live though. BTW, there aren't that many good quality videos of the original band out there. This one is actually kind of extraordinary in that regard.
I feel you on the studio soulful vocal...try out the version off the double live "live at Fillmore East", it's better sound quality on the vocal (still not the studio level). From that concert they took some songs onto their next album "Eat a Peach", suggest you listen to "one way out". Sadly that album was released posthumously after Duane's crash.
I always prefer live to studio. There are things missing in a studio performance that can't be replicated - like audience response, seeing the band's actual performance - in their bodies, their faces and their interaction with each other.. Also, the live sound is created for the venue, not for a record, and hopefully the band has genius sound people, but hearing it on a live recording will not necessarily be optimal. It's also easily transferred from the concert long ago to today's technology, but I stull prefer "live"
You're right. Gregg should have been miked up better.
Doobie Brothers had 2 drummers
One of the originals of 2 drummers was the James Brown Band. But they rarely played together in a song. There is no other comparison to the 2 drummer format as Jaimoe and Butch! NOT EVEN CLOSE! The Doobie Brothers and i believe the Grateful Dead at a time had 2 drummers. And yes the Tedeschi Trucks Band. But even they didn't come close the what these guys did. Jaimoe a true jazz drummer and Butch the rock solid time keeper.
Loved it when I heard it live… what a rush
So many miss Duane on playing the guitar and opening his mouth (or ask what he's doing)... Remember no such thing as in-ear monitors or even decent floor monitors back then so he literally was pulling sounds into his skull!
I see you have not done a reaction of Ronnie James Dio...you should fix this over sight...i would say "Children of the Sea" or "Last in Line" would be a great starting place!
The Doobie Brothers had two drummers.
Agreed there’s more pain in his voice in the studio.
Yep the studio version is much better for the vocal clarity and Greg was doing great here but could not be heard as much as what you get on the album version ..
2 drummers? My 1st thought would be Santana
- LIVE - MUSIC - R - BETTER -
"Bumper stickers should be issued!" -Neil Young "Union Man"
Your are correct, the audio on this video is not the best. The live version on the Fillmore East is much better
Much increased tempo in this song It would have been about 5 more minutes longer if they did the original tempo
I agree, Greg was too low in the mix or something. Can’t hardly hear him. Such a pity. ☹️
Hello, MMBxMOB
I like to request BAND-MAID ‘CLANG’ official live video please! Could you also give me a shoutout for introducing them to you?
BAND-MAID is an all female Japanese hard rock/metal band that dresses up as cafe maids But these ladies are no joke and play harder than the guys most of the time.
These ladies have 40M views on reaction channels alone so If you don’t mind thousands of rock and metal heads coming to your channel you may want to check em out!
I agree - studio version was better - same reason as yours
Dude, This was recorded in about 1970-71. I lived in Atlanta at that time. Reality checkThat was over 1/2 century ago. We are lucky to have what we do. 1/2 century, I repeat. You're sounding a bit silly, and way too young. They sounded great live. In 1971.
The Live album version vocals are better than in this video. There is live video of them playing Dreams from the same show and the vocals just disappear in the mix. A damn shame because the instrumentation is fabulous just like in this song
czcams.com/video/iSjHf0AvRwc/video.html ..
IMHO .. I think their Fillmore East version is a bit overrated. Greg's vocals are definitely drowned out and the instrumentation is sort of all over the place. The link above is a LIVE audio version @ the Atlanta Pop Festival July 3, 1970. Duane was still alive and Greg's vocals are more prominent. You were wishing "to feel" them .. well here ya go.
Studio version is better all day long.
I think live it's a little to fast and the band has less dynamics.
