Asus ROG Ally vs. Steam Deck | Which Gaming Handheld Is Better?

- The new Asus ROG Ally is being positioned as a Steam Deck killer, but does it live up to the hype? It's faster and supports more games, that's for sure, but the ROG Ally doesn't solve many of the major usability issues the Steam Deck has. And it introduces problems of its own.

I fully believe that if Valve didn’t release the steam deck at the price it did, the Rog Ally would be at least 1000
They're going after steam deck because proton is a huge threat to Microsoft's monopoly on pc gaming.
They're also not including a case, or releasing the CAD files. What a shitty company to be supporting.
They're subsidized by Microsoft because it's a huge threat to them.
Ofcourse
@Dalmatian Until more games work on it, it's not that big of a threat.
Thanks for the review 🙏 I’m trying to decide.
GPD Win 4!
Im gonna grab the steam deck,it has so much support behind it
@@mikeright2905]
One thing a lot of people ignore is that the $400 Steam Deck is not functionally different from the $650 Steam Deck. The only functional difference is the SSD size. Benchmark testing on the Steam Deck showed very little difference loading games from an SD card or SSD on these handhelds. So you can get the $400 Steam Deck and a $40 512GB SD card for $440. Or you can buy the $400 Steam Deck and a $55 2230 512 SSD and replace it yourself (which is very easy) for a a total of $455. Then you’re looking at a savings of about $250. Yes the ROG is more powerful, but you might not care if it costs $250 more.
The ROG seems cool, but SteamOS is underrated. I agree it would be better if Windows was more optimized. I’ll admit the ROG is tempting at $700. I never even half considered any other windows gaming handhelds that were $1000-$2000 from the random unknown brands out there, but if there is anything that the ROG killed it isn’t the Steam Deck yet, they did for sure murder all the other competition out there though.
Exactly. Saving up for the base model steam deck. Who needs to pay upfront for storage??
edit:
YOU really changed my mind,
thank you.
I’m now interested in the smaller deck & just getting the tv port for it to play chilling on the tv
It's wrong to dismiss the $400 Deck. It works great with cheap microSD cards, *if you need them*. See, not everybody wants to have 10 games installed at once. And the $400 Deck has the exact same performance as the $650 Deck. The $600 Ally would be much less enticing by comparison.
Yeah, I’m using the 64gb model with a 512gb SD card and it works just fine. I haven’t felt the need to upgrade the SSD. I suppose it depends on what kinds of games you’re playing, though.
400 Steam is the big brain buy, srsly if you purchased the other models then you kinda mugged yourself
Good luck getting the cheapest Steam Deck, it's always out of stock in the UK from Valve. Only ones available are from scalpers and dodgy eBay sellers...If it was available I'd have bought one and started modding it however I've pre-ordered the Ally.
I have the $$ so I got the Ally because the performance is much better. Simple reason that works for me!
you can also easily replace the ssd
ASUS support is what I’m more interested in. How long will they support it before moving on to the next?
@@ItachiProductionsThe thing is, Valve isn't going to be pulling a new steam deck every year. Asus might do that. Which means there is more time for the steam deck to be supported
@@Ferroni03 yeah I like how they're treating this as a console, only upgrading a few years, than a yearly one which could hinder the steam deck verified system, I'm still looking at you Pokémon Sun and Moon, felt trashed running it on old 3ds, but I managed to finish it
@@ItachiProductionssteam deck is running pretty much running linux with a adjusted steam ui so even if you will get a steam deck 2 it will run the same software
If they implemented what they did with rog phone probably 2 years 😅
@Smurf Mafia the difference is Valve continues to provide firmware updates to the Deck almost on a weekly basis. ASUS highend laptops get one or two firmware updates a year before the next one. That’s what is worrying on this product.
Sounds like you should have RMA'ed this. I haven't experienced any of the issues you are describing with my Steam Deck.
If he is talking about the Steam Deck on "battery dies in 5 minutes when it shouldn't" he definitely needs an RMA.
Why didn’t he? I play my steam deck more than my Xbox series x and switch. This device made me game again!
Very weird indeed , he criticized the ROG alot but then picked the ROG because of the crazy Steamdeck bugs that I have never even heard of lol
@@Dx-so7jm definitely a biased review
Don't forget, you don't "have" to spend $650 for a 512gb steam deck. Steam, ifixit, and a host of other websites are more than happy to help you along the whole process of buying a $400 deck and a $80 512gb SSD. Sometimes less depending on sales or used l.
Depends though, I tried to upgrade my deck but I ended up stripping the screws
That's true but the most popular steam deck is the 256gb version followed by the 512gb. It's really good that valve is pioneering reparability but for the audience of the steam deck (aka normies) they just want to buy the device and for it to just work. most don't want to open it and have to change the SSD for actually usable internal storage. but hopefully this makes the space more price competitive and keeps valve on their toes.
You can get the base steam deck and upgrade to 2tb ssd. Would cost the same as the 512gb. I have the 512 and upgraded to 2tb ssd and 1 tb micro sd for.
I know I'm going to sound crazy, but I'm thinking of going with 512 deck for the anti-glare screen. I play portables outside a lot. Do you or anyone on this thread know if the others are all that bad outside?
@@GoldenMean743 I know it's pretty subjective opinion, but I don't mind it outside, I don't sit in direct sunlight when I do, I'm in shade, but I never have an issue. My brother in law bought a anti glare screen protector with a 1tb and is still under the price of the 512gb.
I just wish people would stop saying "Deck Killer" or anything on those lines. Makes me feel like closing and disliking the video.
I really like your review, your review is really a handheld gamer review, like no talk about TDP, apple to apple at TDP level of comparison thing, I like those too but this one is simple, pick it up, compare FPS without tuning.
Yes Armory Crate can't show all game libraries, but isn't the same on the Steam Deck? Don't forget, on Steam Deck, you are viewing games only from Steam WITHOUT tinkering. If you need to add third parties like Xbox, Ubisoft ( if this one even works ), EPIC ( not working as long as they have updates ), etc....do a lot of stuff in desktop mode BEFORE we can add to the Steam Library as a third party app.
Just one suggestion, would you get a better Microphone? volume is not just low but fluctuating too. Subscribed
On the surface, the desktop and Armoury Crate experience on the ROG Ally don't seem like a big deal, but that could really start to feel cumbersome if you're someone who enjoys constantly checking out different games and installing and uninstalling frequently. Steam OS feels like a console experience and is very easy and convenient to understand and use. That could very well be a difference for people in deciding between the two. It's about the total package, not just raw performance.
People don’t use steam because it feels like a console through. I thought not feeling like a console is why people PC gaming? You have more options and flexibility. Sometimes there’s extra steps in PC gaming. But raw performance doesn’t matter as much as the games available on it. The ROG is a better performing device AND has more games available on it
@@toptiertech7291I've always preferred Steam because it feels more like a console/platform while everything else is just a basic launcher. Steam gives me more options to have a simple console-like experience without taking away my freedom to tinker with and mod my games.
Thanks for posting this! Think I'll just stay with the Deck. Perhaps I'll grab an Ally if/when there's there's price drop. Basically, not in a hurry to grab the Ally atm.
It seems like a great device and I hope it’s a success. OS/UI support, warranty and repairability and the lack of at least one trackpad are issues I would consider but if I didn’t already have a Steam Deck I would have to really think about which device to go with. Let’s hope the other laptop manufacturers are inspired to join in, Dell Alienware had a very similar looking prototype they were showing off 3 years ago then all went silent.
I'm really surprised we haven't seen the Alienware UFO make it to market. I still think it'll happen though. Alienware is a company where nobody expects them to compete on price. They can really throw in some good stuff and sell it for a premium price.
@@dralberthofmann Hopefully the success of the Steam Deck and (fingers crossed) ROG Ally will refresh their interest.
That’s where I’m at, next paycheck I have to decide if I pre order the ally or get the deck. I’m so torn
@@naterod what did you decide?
@@dralberthofmann steam deck. Main reason is the trackpads. Like my inventory management in Baldurs gate 3 would be horrible just on the Ally. In a year of the ally still has good support I may get it but by that time there will probably be another one out
You didn't mention the most important caveat: you can't even turn off the screen without games crashing on the ROG. It's NOT PORTABLE
Huh? I game test. Played 20 games. Never experienced this.
Pretty excited actually. Picking mine up on release day. I’ll give it a shot.
Content creators: The Ally is the Steamdeck killer we've all been waiting for. Now I love my Steamdeck..
Me: I'm calling BS. You can't say something is a Steamdeck killer and go on to say you like what is being killed.
I don't think people are talking enough about one little feature that makes the steamdeck still amazing. The ability to put it into sleep mode while gaming and coming back to it later.
This is the big thing for me. I work on the road. I usually get small windows of like 20 minutes where I'm free. It's nice being able to bust it out and start right up where I left off immediately.
@Goodhoof it is SUCH an underated feature, and probably my favorite feature. Hardly anyone ever mentions it when it comes to comparing them
Does the rog ally not have this feature? I’m thinking about purchasing one soon and this is a deal breaker for me
@Syn Less it might have it im not completely sure. However, none of the reviews that I've seen have mentioned it so far.
8:50
I have had zero issues with my steam deck and I was a day one preorder 2nd batch user and I use it daily. You clearly got a bad unit and should have RMA’d it. I would pick the deck EVERY DAY.
For around $450-$500 you can get a 512GB Steam deck, buy the $400 64GB version and install a 512GB NVME, in fact for $510 you can get a 1TB Steam deck as I've seen 1TB 2230 NVME's for $110. If you wanted the "better" screen then it's easy to get the same result using a screen protector. My 2 major issues with the Asus rog ally are the way Asus has been acting recently and the fact it's running Windows which isn't designed for devices like it, although that may change in the future, and compared to Linux windows is a resource hog. Gamepass is technically available on the Steam deck through a Chromium web browser although it's streaming the game so you need an internet connection to do so.
You don't have to change the refresh rate on the Ally, just apply an fps cap and let VRR take care of the rest.
I'm shocked how a reviewer doesn't know this basic stuff about Freesync
@@dark-lord- in his defense, the FPS cap was broken back then.
@@mechanicalmonk2020 9 days ago?
you gained a subscriber here love the honesty...came from aya neo 2 AND Gpd win 4 ..sold them because of ergo on them sucks..im decided ill get asteamdeck instead
Thanks for the comparison. After you mentioned the Steam Deck had superior buttons, that's all I needed to know.
he didn't even mentioned the trackpads which in my opinion is the best feature of the deck, go try playing an FPS against mouse and keyboard players while rocking the joysticks lol, trackpads are not as good as m/k but it's so better than a stick for aiming. the deck il clearly built around them and because of the trackpads it's bigger than the ROG
Many of the gripes listed are fixable with software updates. As long as Asus supports this device and gives out big updates like Valve did it's an improvement on many fronts and can get significantly better. I just hope they do, we need more competition in this market.
Commenting on the ally release say thanks for the video, and I think right now my best route is to just use a Razer kishi with my phone and steam link while I wait for a deck 2 or an ally 2
I pre-ordered the ally as soon as it was available. I've been watching nonstop videos online and doing research in terms of comparing the steam deck and the ally. This by far was the best video I've seen you've made my mind up for me. I'm excited for the ally👍
we are in two mate :') I feel raped that I gave already 800euros and still I dont have it in my hands
@@LudovicoDev we are three. Ally community will be huge!!!
You're going to be disappointed, the steam deck is a dream, the experience is so smooth and everything just works, not to mention the back peddles and the touch pads which are a game changer, after using the deck, i would never upgrade unless it the deck 2
@@misteryolo7248 I'm not expecting a overpowered super computer. I understand that there will be flaws in this ally. It's not perfect. We have only scratched the surface of pc gaming. I'm going to be understanding in terms of the battery or maybe any glitches or bugs.
@@kiedub2000 it's only Good if you love tinkering
I won’t be picking it up initially I am interested, but there’s too many unknowns. I might get one in the future after some time has passed and I am able to see what kind of support that Asus and the community give to it or if they just released a newer version six months from now like what other PC Handheld companies do and make anyone who bought the first one mad. I don’t see this as a stream deck killer as people are saying. It does seem to be a good competitor from what I’ve seen, but only time will truly tell.
Wise words 😊
Thanks for watching everyone!
Sorry for the audio quality. This one had a bad recording (a lot of noise, pops, clicks, etc.) so I had to run restoration software to get it to a useable spot. Thanks for sticking through it!
Where's the link for the full ROG review!.!?
audio quality was very fine on my end. Very good video!
It sounds good enough on my side
the audio sounds good, just the top camera is super out of focus! Overall great content :) Keep it up~
Have you even used and tested a steamdeck??? At 8-10 Watts the Steam Deck is FASTER than the ROG ALLY with better fps (check The Phawx steam deck review vs Ally). The steam deck is built for lower power draw for extended play of AAA titles. Ive gamed with Dirt4 and Shadow of Mordor for more than 5 hours on a flight and the quality was still awesome so im not sure even you know what your talking about do you? Give the Pros for the Steam Deck where it is due! Its not meant to be a powerhouse portable that last only 2 hours. Also, not everyone is rich and or comes from wealth. The steam deck starts at $399 and an SD card of 512GB (not mentioned unfortunately) brings it closer to $440. Why would you say the only way to get 512 GB for the deck is to buy the more expensive version. Such a Garbage Review i had to post.
Feel like reciting the quote from Happy Gilmore:
"...At no point in your rambling, incoherent response were you even close to anything that could be considered a rational thought. Everyone in this room is now dumber for having listened to it. I award you no points, and may god have mercy on your soul..."
You and Eta Prime are the only two reviewers that ive seen that didnt completely shit on the Rog for battery life. Great video.
Great review. Thank you.
I have had my Steam deck since this past October and it's free of the battery bug and anything that was mentioned in the video.still on the fence,if I want an ROG ALLY as it would help me as a backup PC in case my Custom Gaming PC ever has technical issues or a part just dies.
I just pre ordered the z1 extreme cant wait 🙌🏽🙌🏽
Cries in Norwegian... xD For me there isnt a question, the Steam Deck is not sold here, so I'm looking very much forward to the Ally, I've even pre-ordered the Waterfield CitySlicker for the Ally so that I can bring it around in style and the safety of a good bag!
I think I might buy a steam deck soon as im a truck driver that also am into trekking and camping so the better battery life at 10 watts mode is a huge win for me I also like the deck being more plug and play. gonna wait couple of months to see if 10% discount returns haha
IT RETURNED check rn it lasts until now-July 13th! I may get the 256 one.
The Steam Deck gen 2 will be a banger
2:06 I literally bought the 64gb steam deck on discount and replaced the ssd with a 512gb one, the cost came out to like $430 which is considerably less than the rog ally
I was able to get the 64gb steam deck for 370 with tax during the steam sale and spent 70 bucks more for a 1tb Samsung SSD. For that value and because of how good Steam OS is, I personally think the Steam Deck is the better choice.
Thanks for the frank comparison video. I placed an order for the ROG Ally as soon as pre-orders became available and am very excited to pick it up on June 13th. I have been primarily an Xbox console gamer up to now but am looking forward to having a truly portable gaming system that will allow me to play my Gamepass and owned games when I am away from home. I’ll follow for any future videos.
I like the steam deck, I got the 64gb model and upgraded to a 1tb ssd and slapped a clear backplate on it
I feel like Xbox could do a handheld using the Xbox arcade platform they had from Xbox 360. Some games on that platform still aren't available on the Xbox One and newer consoles. I would buy one if it cost under 400 dollars and get to play many Xbox classic games and Xbox arcade games.
Playing on one of these anywhere including long haul flights is a great experience. I’ll still rely on the good old desktop PC for ultimate performance though
Can you pause game, turn off screen and and turn on screen to resume game? Similar to steamdeck or switch
Probably you can adjust the power management options in Win 11 to not power off and just let it kill the battery completely.
Just keep it plugged in and it will never die
This is the first I've heard of the Steam Deck battery bug and I watch videos and am on Deck social media and forum channels on the daily. Certainly, my Deck doesn't have that bug or any other significant issues so far after 10 months. Now, of course, if you are one that has the battery bug or any other issue, this doesn't mean anything, it's just no fun when stuff like that happens. But I do wonder if it's not as common as you perceive it to be and are suggesting here.
Anyhoo...why haven't you RMAd it to fix your battery bug? Or have you contacted support at all? Perhaps they can even talk you through a fix over messaging or something. RMAing sure does suck but that doesn't sound like an issue you want to live with. If I were you, I'd fix that before your warranty runs out. At least contact Valve to find out if you can maybe fix it without RMAing at all. You never know (if you haven't yet tried). :-)
This was an awesome comparison
I pre-ordered the ROG ally without knowing much about it. I have the steam deck and I like it, I just wish the resolution was better. So I’m hoping the ally fills the void I’ve been dreaming about 🤗. June 13th I’m ready!
Is the low resolution that noticeable at that screen size?
@@papertoad456 yes I definitely can see the difference. Going from gaming at 4k & 2k on my personal computer to 1280x 800 is a big difference in resolution quality.
16:9 is not as appealing as its ROG Flow line up of 16:10 screen. Also 120 is so last year. 165Hz screen, 16:10 ratio, and detachable controllers would make this amazing! 😊
Only grip about steam deck is screen tech and resolution my oled switch plays Zelda amazing at 720p vividly
Did you buy geek squad protection?
I haven’t used windows in years. Is it difficult to get games from your Steam library onto the Ally?
At 10 watts the stram deck is by far better than all competion. And nearly twice more fps than the asus which is nuts.
At 15 watt they trade blows
At 20watt and higher is where asus is better consistently, but sinc ethey both have 40 watt batteries but the asus requires more juice, it lasts for an hour at most usually less. Even the phaux stated 40watts is simply too small for the asus.
The steam deck optimization at lower watts means that u can play even AAA games at low setting at 800 30 fps regularly. And even with 15 watt it outlasts the ally.
The optimization of steam os with the steam deck processor is simply unmatched.
At the moment it not matched wait a bit and we can talk
what the fuck is a stram 😄
Hope more hand held pcs in the future add a track pad like the steam deck
New always better... But I'm planning to buy steam deck next month. What do u think? Worth it? And how long this handheld console could last?
PUBLIC BATHROOM AUDIO from POTATO MICROPHONE is not good for this channel.
This guy deserve better.
The content is great.
This is all that matters.
Had the ally pre ordered. Cancelled it and bought the deck
Excellent choice!
bravo mona
Why roll the dice on an Asus Rog, when it's already been established how amazing the SD is. Auto-resume alone should get you to get one. Some of those PC games take forever to start up sometime requiring a login. On the SD, you press the power button and play right where you left off.
All these other handhelds are just confirming valve did the right thing. A steam deck with this chip or the next upgrade for it plus an OLED screen, dual fans and a slight redesign (not necessary) and you’ve nailed the portable handheld.
Or slap steam OS on the Ally and you have a good stopgap… If Microsoft decide to make a portable windows then what a great day it would be, and not in the next 12 years which is the Windows way.
Who knows how long ASUS will Actually support the software, Valve on the other hand took the Apple approach and that means amazing software updates consistently.
If you support Steam Deck, you support community, open source and open platform with top tier support.
Also Microsoft and other companies will need to add better features, reduce price, optimize Windows
Win win for everyone
I also preordered the ally and a 2 tb m.2 and have a 1 tb micro sd card 3 tb storage perfect wont run out of space fast
Need to correct a few things.
One Asus ROG Ally is not as powerful as PS5. I believe they miss spoke or it was a typo in the script. Ally is closer to a PS4. They both max out at 1080p.
Secondly $700 dollar Ally can’t be compared to a $400 dollar Steam deck. This is because while 64GB is not enough to install games on. One could buy a 512 GB SD card on Amazon for 40 to 50 dollars. So a base line Steam Deck + 40 dollar SD card is only $440 dollars. It’s not even close in value to that combination.
Windows 11 is not hard to install on Steam Deck. There is no need to wipe the Steam os. The best way is to install on to SD card. In fact Steam Deck’s touch controls makes it much easier to navigate in windows than with controller or touchscreen (at that size). I got game pass games installed on my Steam deck.
It's not even a question, although the ally can be better in some aspects, the deck is definitely a much better experience.
Yeah, I love that auto-resume function!
Even though the Ally got the 120 hertz screen, if you're just using it for 1 1/2 to 2 hours the extra juice the screen uses is basically a moot point.
I love love LOVE my Steam Deck, especially with CryoUtils and Smokeless running for overclocking. THAT SAID . . .I preordered the Ally. I think they'll pair well together and, I can't speak for anyone else, but there's plenty of room in my games library for another handheld.
Same mindset I had. Could use just for gamepass. Had ayaneo geek and sold after a week. Pricepoint much better with the ally. This will pair nice with my steamdeck
I too love love LOVE LOVE *LOVE* my Steam Deck and I've considered the Ally and may yet consider it (and likely will every time I am near a Best Buy over the coming year)...but my concern is that if I get one, in what circumstances would I not pick better performance? I feel like I would never go back to my Deck even though I love it so much. I love Steam OS, Steam Input, trackpads, gyro and the four back buttons. I love the community and I love Steam and, yes, I even love Valve. I do believe that the Deck does many things better - probably everything besides performance and graphics quality is better on the Deck - but when I'm ready to sit down and play I just don't know when I wouldn't choose more performance and/or graphics quality.
So I guess I'm wondering do you really think you'll still play on your Deck once you have an Ally?
@@dralberthofmann I do! I know I'll always go back to Deck because of the console-like experience while still being able to tinker around. Windows, when it comes to gaming, can be a bit of a faff in my opinion. Especially when playing Steam games and using EmuDeck, the Deck just WORKS! Whenever I feel like "playing around" I can make the Deck more of a tinker-toy.
From what I've heard, I think the ergonomics of the Deck will also keep me going back to it for "daily driving" over the Ally. Especially once the novelty of "oooh new shiny toy!" wears off with the Ally, I think the Deck will still be what I pick up first.
I've also seen scuttlebutt of a screen mod for the Deck and I'm curious as to what iterations of that will bring! That's why the Deck will continue to reign supreme in my opinion: Between Valve and the Deck community, the Steam Deck will continue to be the best overall experience, all things considered.
@@DaveAdams222 I agree and it seems Ally suffers in terms of battery power. Although its strong in terms of power I think you’ll mainly see people playing it with settings similar to the steamdeck. No point in being strong if it dies so much fatser
@@DaveAdams222 yah, you've prolly seen the screen mod by now...I think it's like 1200p and with improved color reproduction?
Anyway, yes that's a good point on ergonomics. The Deck is so comfortable. I've had upwards of six hour sessions before with my Deck and I never felt any discomfort even at the end. The Ally definitely doesn't appear to be quite as comfortable.
When gaming on a handheld, I wanna play games that won't drain the battery in under 2 hours so I can play when away from home. For that the 400 USD steamdeck with a 512 GB micro SD car for 40 USD is a no brainer. Still, it's nice to see more and more devices in the market.
The Steam Deck also drains the battery just as fast
@Luis Perez Not at 10 watts or lower. It destroys the Rog at lower watts. It's not even close.
you can get a 2tb 2230 for $150
@@oladipupodurotimi4754 who buys this to play those games though? The games most people want to play run at a higher TDP, which run better and for basically the same battery life as the Steam Deck. And you can play alot more games on the Ally given the face it can run all the games not just compatible ones.
@@LuisPerez-5 There's actually not much performance difference between 10W and 15W on Deck, most games run fine at lower power. A lot of people have also found themselves going back to finish games they'd already bought but never had time for. Yes the Ally will be better for the most intensive, newest games. But as seen with Returnal there are times when it's still not enough for AAA. The Ally seemingly has better compatibility but as he said here there are games that instantly crash. So maybe they need improved drivers from AMD or maybe it's a problem with how games detect the hardware. It currently does *not* run all Windows games and it will take some time to figure out why.
Basically if the Ally didn't run like ass at 10W or less it would be a clear upgrade. But there's a decent chance this can be improved with different drivers or a firmware update.
Outside the US the ROG Ally is about 900 USD that’s double the price of the Deck. The Ally is still not as accessible as the steam deck.
would it kill you to focus the camera when showing the Rog Ally?
Did you say that the Ally has performance near the PS5? Is this true? Lol - that seems a bit nuts. It’s hard for me to believe that.
I have a Deck but cant wait for the Ally. Already preordered at BestBuy

Can I pre order from Best Buy and then add a protection plan before its released? In other words, can I spend 700 now and the rest for the plan in a week or so?
@@brandonsnyder6501 I think so, but not 100% - I'm sure when u pick it up you can.

FINALLY a good comparison between the two that actually gives useful data. I wish I could like this video twice. Thank you.
The Linus Tech Tips video is good too.
I currently have a Steam Deck, but I pre-ordered the Ally. I plan to daily drive that due to gamepass and use the Deck as a way to play multiplayer with friends and siblings on the go.
Could I get either a steam deck or the ally then get a dock and plug my racing sim rig into the dock then output it to my tv? There’s quite a few sims that are only on PC and I only have a PS5 atm. I’m also torn on which one to get. I get the ally has better performance but the deck just seems better all around although if I can get the rig to work I’ll likely opt for the ally and hopefully get up to 1440p at medium settings on ACC.
Ally hopefully would run better docked but I would wait up to a month after it starts shipping to find out how well it really works.
Own the steam deck. Pre order ally been on the fence going to give it a try see how it goes.
seems kinda unfair mentioning the touch screen is better on ally for navigation (which i can see being true, the steamdeck touch screen responsiveness leaves a lot to be desired) but not mention the touchpads on the steamdeck at all.
I can't imagine trying to use the desktop with only the touch screen and right analog as mouse control as even trying to use the right analog on the steam deck ( or any controller) is horrendous
I'm happy the keyboard on the Deck has gotten better, admittedly it was a nightmare at first.
i gonna use ROG ally for laptop replacement, gonna for watching movie, music, and some gaming. i gonna use docking frequently.
7:49 the Steam Deck has a gaming mode in its controller in desktop mode. You hold start and it switches over to controller. Vice versa as well.
I tried playing Mass effect legendary collection last night again on my steam deck and it doesn't work anymore. It looks like the proton 8 update messed it up. I cant wait for the Ally and play all my pc games without worrying if it will work or not.
Oof, they usually catch and fix stuff like that. Did you change Proton versions in the game settings? Sometimes that works.
@@passintogracegoldenyearnin6310 yeah tried everything
Maybe it's just me, but I rather have a more console-like experience with the steamdeck, rather than a laptop with controllers attached onto it like-experience with the rog ally.
Especially with the price difference. For about $460-475 you get a 64gb + a 512gb micro sd or 512gb SSD. I got both and it was still significantly less than the rog ally or buying the 512gb steamdeck outright.
And on top of that; the steamdeck actually runs windows perfectly fine. The trackpads on the steamdeck make windows a breeze to navigate. I know a lot of people say they don't really use the trackpads, but they really do make a huge difference in desktop mode.
I haven't had not one problem since learning how to dual-boot (which only took about half an hour to do btw).
I get the ease of use of SteamOS due to it's amazing UI, and when I want to play games like MW2 or Destiny 2, I just switch over to windows..not that hard, at all.
In my opinion, for the price; the steamdeck delivers waaaaaay more bang for your buck. The rog ally does have a better screen, better performance when plugged in, and....nope, that's about it. For $250 more, I don't think that's enough to justify it over the steamdeck.
The price is still too much on the Ally for that little increase in performance.
I say a stable 30 - 60 fps is more than enough for portable gaming.
Hey there! Just wanted to drop by and show some support for your awesome gaming channel. I love how you bring a unique perspective to the games you play, and your commentary is always engaging and entertaining. I also have a gaming channel.
It's clear that you're passionate about gaming, and it's great to see a small channel like yours producing such high-quality content. Your videos are always a joy to watch, and I can't wait to see what games you'll be playing next.
Keep up the fantastic work, and don't let the size of your channel hold you back. You're doing an amazing job, and I'm excited to see your channel grow and thrive in the future. Best of luck to you!
Great review, but once again another review that does not delve into the benefits
of a 120hz freesync premium screen. Being able to cap a fps and have that meaningfully reduce stuttering when the underpowered system acts like an underpowered system, is criminal amongst reviewers. It's a hell of a feature to have not only a smoother experience, but without double buffered vsync halving the response times too.
With the absolutely massive L Asus has deservantly taken recently, it's hard to trust. If you pay any attention to the PC world, you already know exactly what I'm saying.
I do not see this as the steam deck killer. Unless they fix the battery and performance (which won't be easy because higher performance takes more from the battery). With a working Steam Deck, playing with similar setting in Cyberpunk for example, is almost .5x or 1.5x longer than the ROG.
Plus the storage on the steam deck? Buy the cheaper one and upgrade to 2TB, still cheaper than the ROG Ally. Which doing that is probably easier to do on the Steam Deck. I compare this to buying a lambo (just to show it off) vs a pickup (because it can do bit of everything).
Keep your charger near by because you'll need it every 30 minutes lol. Also getting Windows on the Steam Deck is actually a lot easier than I thought. The only reason I could see someone getting the Ally is that they don't care about the battery and don't play games on Steam at all.
Why does the performance need to be fixed? It’s much better at it than steam deck
Having the handheld that more poeple have is a huge plus. As long as the ally does not sell super well the steamdeck is the better choice for now.
I got the best buy cardholder discount ($70 off), so my Ally Z1 Extreme was actually cheaper than my 512gb Steam Deck 😂
09:17 if you can leave it and rest mode overnight and pick up and resume the game tomorrow, how is it not a pickup and go type of gaming experience? Doesn't really make sense.
The Deck gets better performance at lower wattages compared to the Ally so the battery life isn't comparable in that sense. Also it seems you received a faulty unit that you probably should RMA
Thanks for video, so you are saying go with the ASUS if you are more interested in desktop apps like Photoshop, illustrator, Cinema4d Ect...
You don't need to spend $650 on the Deck for 512 GB, you can get something like a Samsung Evo 512 GB for $50 instead. The Ally does not have that option
I like this Asus handheld because I can technically do my work in a full desktop Excel app instead of mobile or web, and play all of my games and emulators!
This is going to vet valve to release a fire ass Steam Deck 2.
But I bought the 400 deck vs the 650 asus. Maybe if asus has the 450 option it would be 50 dollar upgrade
Note that the Ally doesn't perform well at low wattages. The Steam Deck still wipes the floor with other handhelds at 10w. The Ally is much better at higher wattages, so if you want more power for new AAA games the Ally is the better choice, but if battery life is more important to you, or you just want to play older games or 2D games the Deck will be better.
Asus ally just got a firmware update. It’s now performing a lot better at 10w.
Check out benchmarks for the 7840u at 10-15w. That’s what the z1e is capable of. Asus needs to get their act together
I have a beast of a rigg and a steam deck the only reason why i decided not to go for the ally is because I dont think i need the ally to replace my deck or my rigg . The potential in the ally is using it for a desktop/laptop replacement which I dont need . I think the ally is good if you dont have a dedicated rigg or laptop . I do reccomend both devices . Sure they both have trade offs but i think they both hit 2 different type of pc users . I do hope windows release a handheld mode because handhelds that run it need it and that steam os is released but I do think the desktop for linux needs to become more user friendly.
@timmiller2476 You're right. The update is a step in the right direction, but performance is still below where it should be. Hopefully, future updates will continue to improve performance because I'd love to see more solid competition in this segment.
Emulation the big boys, running steam os on rog ally. Mouse/pad accessory trackpads? That can act similar to steam deck or better. These categories if possible will sway me to rog.
Not trying to knock anyone but check retro game corp SD and Ally comparison video.
since you disassemble it what SSD can we use? The sn740 works?
yes it does, probably the only 2tb option too
2230 SSD
Dude seems like he wants a system that is fundamentally different than the Ally
Hands down steam deck. Windows 11 is a barely serviceable desktop OS not fit for a handheld.
wait, 1 full hour of cyberpunk 2077 on turbo mode, how? I just can't reach the 43mins on the ROG, and about the 500 nits that's is cuestionable maybe just my screen is not the best but the steam deck seems better outdoors
Couldnt we just add SteamOS to the ally if windows becomes too much of a hassle?
Odd everyone talks about the noise of the steam deck, mine doesn't make much noise at all.
Im just going to wait til next year and see if rog ally holds up against steam deck 2 or i may even go with nintendo switch 2.
So let me get this straight. ROG Allay performs the same/worse than Steam Deck if we use native panel resolution of each device? By the charts in the video it would seem that 720p/800p on the Steam Deck nets similar performance as ROG Ally at 1080p. And you have to use Turbo mode to get to that performance level. That's a HUGE no go for me. I'm very susceptible to non native resolutions and I can easily tell when a game is running at subnative/upsclaed resolution even on small screens. IDK why all SD vs ROG Ally benchmarks are 720/800p. If the native screen resolution is so unimportant you could benchmark both devices at 240p because why not? Furthermore, if you wanna sacrifice native resolution for better performance it would seem that portable devices like that should have 480p screens :D Nope, anything below native is visible. ROG Ally should go for 720p/800p screen instead of 1080p one.
The belittling of the $400 steamdeck price is dumb especially when it's repairable and upgradable, the ally has major basic use issues like suspended and efficiency problems.
I often get self conscious when I pull it out on a plane but usually people just pretend not to see it or shield their eyes.
I have the Asus ROG Flow Z13 Acronym. Definitely lots of stares with that one. Understanding your feeling that self-conscious and people want to ask but won't vibe. 😂
@@celinek2690 Oh you gots da THICC BOI, one of my colleagues wants to get one. The regular Z13's 16GB limit makes it useless for them.
@@passintogracegoldenyearnin6310 Surprisingly it is light because I carry it as is on straps. 😂
@@celinek2690 Noice.
You failed to review how important the track pads are on the deck. It's a game changer and allows you to play a wider range of games. Also failed to mention that then 400 deck model specs are the same as the 650 model. Most games will run fine on a SD card.
