Please followup on that input lag in coming days/weeks! Probably the least mentioned item of all the ROG Ally reviews but in some ways the most important. Very painful for those that want the ROG Ally for the performance improvements, control pad lag defeats the purposes of more FPS and higher refresh rate screen.. lol
Very strange no one mentioned it
Sponsored… I’m waiting for the release for the real reviews then I’ll decide between this or the steam deck
@@CosmicStench_ the steam deck is nice but there’s a lot of messing around to get stuff working unless it’s a straight up steam game and even then there’s figuring which proton would work for it
@LPRIPPER you can also just return it if it doesn’t improve on the first two weeks.
Considering the brand I’d assume they do enough patches first week to get things to a good place
I plan to compare it to the SD I have and if it’s meh then return it
He made an update on this same video
I played through Arkham Knight on the Steam Deck using Steam OS. Tons of games aren't officialy supported but work fine on the Deck. Use ProtonDB to find out what works, and what doesn'.
Awesome, what sort of FPS did you get?
@@PcCentric i capped the screen refresh rate and the frame frame rate limit at 40hz mainly for battery reasons. Zero issues.
Yeah I've only had issues with some games like Smite because they don't make it Linux compatible with easyanticheat
I was thinking the same thing, played Arkham knight just fine on the Steam Deck.
@@PcCentric I've never had below 30 FPS on the Steam Deck, and when I did, it was emulating Atari Jaguar. Almost always get FPS around 60 on any game I run, and you can adjust the refresh rate.
Best review/impressions video I've seen on this so far. Thanks for some actual real world critical testing!
Yeah
I can’t wait to see the REAL review in a month when it comes out. These tech tubers are paid to say relatively nice things about the product. CZcams is essentially QVC nowadays
Influencer hell, once you realize it, you realize how the world tries to program you to buy useless shit.
100%
Great Review, also massively appreciate the last min update!
I'm sold on the Ally. But if the input lag of the controls is there on launch day it could be a deal breaker for me.
Seriously of all things??? Input delay is the 1 thing i wont tolerate
They gave out a software update to improve the input lag. Pc centric said it
@@AugustineKusiDuah-bk4fr thank God. I ordered 2 of these
@@eros2144 bro , and here i am having super hard time convincing my wife to get just one . Especially because i returned my deck within 2 weeks
@@eros2144 yeah thank God paaaa
Am I the only one who thinks he’s plug the charger in the wrong place?
Hey Marcus! Are you able to do a TimeSpy test with the Ally and tell me what the score is? I really want to know how powerful this thing is which I feel not many has mentioned benchmark results.
Can you test out Diablo IV on the Ally during the Beta Slam this weekend?
This!!!! This would be the only reason why I’d pick this up is to play Diablo IV on the go !
Yes please 🙏
second this!
It runs at 60fps on the Steam deck on low settings with FSR 2 on quality mode. So the Ally should be able to run it at 1080p 60fps on medium settings with FSR 2 I think. It would be nice to see it run on the Ally as I want to play on the Ally next month.
Id love to see Borderlands 2 and 3 tested. I think those games would be so fun to play on something like this. Just preordered mine.
well you can play Borderlands 2 on Switch :P. I played Borderlands 3 on my Steam Deck and because I like to play FPS games at 60fps it really spanks the battery.
@@alyxoj1361 borderlands on the switch looks like a water painting
Thank you for testing Civ. I like a similar sim type game with a lot of writing on the screen; football manager, so its important that the device is optimized for it, especially the font size, zoom capabilities and button adjustments
I am still not convinced, the price seems a bit too high in the UK
Mate, what about when you connect it to a monitor and play CS GO? I know it’s not the target game, but would love to know.
Also curious to know if it will run steam OS
The most unexpected sponsor segment I’ve seen on the channel! That Sonic motherboard looks awesome! If only there was one for Mario… 🤔
Or luigi...
Batman Arkham Knight does run "natively" on the steam deck (for the most part, technically most of the steam games don't because of the proton layer). You just have to run a different version of proton.
Don't plan on buying any portable PC without dual trackpads like the steam deck. The touch sensor is also a must for me since it greatly expands your maximum button options, which important for playing PC games built for MKB. What's the point in a handheld PC if you need do go around carrying a MKB with you.
Finally, someone said this...
Did you end up getting a update about the game pad latency? You’re the only reviewer to mention it and I’m curious about it as well
The tech chap also mentioned it
Can you test gyro support? None of the written reviews or youtube videos have tried it. Pcworld said he had a document that mentions it but he couldnt fogure out how to turn it on. Id assume steam controller config has it like any other modern game pad. Not sure how to use outside of steam.
Biggest draw for me is that this will probably be able to run almost every game at 60fps at 720p which I wouldn’t mind. Probably better battery life too
Why would it have better battery life when it has the same size battery as the Steam Deck, runs on a more power hungry SOC and relies on a resource intensive OS like Windows which is not as efficient and light as Linux?
At low settings not at high
@@peacelove8395 Should have been more clear, I meant the ROG would have better battery life itself running at 720. Not better battery life than the steam deck. I love my steam deck, not one to be negative and toxic towards things other people like :)
@@andreyvyasenya I love the ROG Ally, I will definitely buy one in July
1 Steam Sales and 1 Game Pass Machine? I'm in. (I'm playing a few Games I buy through Xbox Series S on PC via Play Anywhere. Would not mind Play Anywhere on an not Steam OS Handheld)
@@applehazeva2739 that’s awesome to hear man! Got one on preorder too. Was able to sell my steam deck. Yeah steam sales, gamepass and Xbox playanywhere is awesome. I will have to see what games I have on Xbox that I can play. I’m just excited to be able to play call of duty and Fortnite on it as I couldn’t on Steam Deck.
Hi As you have both devices , will you abandon the Steam Deck over Rog Ally ??
You can zoom in and out using shoulder buttons on Switch, it should work here too?
That imput issue is really worrying.... Great Review!
Hey pc centric! I have just built a computer a couple months ago and learned from you! My ssd and hhd won’t download more than 3 mb a sec for some reason. I really need your help I have no idea how to fix this anymore.
Jackfrags also reported input lag from the thumb sticks, but with a pad it’s great
The hardware seems excellent but the software really makes it a no-go for me, would really love to see valve release steam os for the public to use so handheld PCs like the ally can take advantage of it
Isn't steam os already available to the public? People are putting it on their desktop pc
@@GameTimeWhy thats unofficial community made distribution not technically from valve
@@Eskoxo oh thanks for the info
The hardware is clearly a step above the steam deck, but only a step. It has a battery life drain from it, so no different from the Deck in that regard. But yeah, that software and UI is ROUGH for people who are not into niche stuff like fan speed, and it lacks many of the features supported by the Steam Deck community.
The only attractive thing that differentiates it from the Steam Deck imho is the Xbox support, you could import and play your Xbox games with it. But, unfortunately, I own almost NO Xbox games on digital library. All of mine were physical, so that feature falls deaf with me. Basically, this is a slightly better/worse Steam Deck (depending on your perspective, hardware wise it's slightly better, software wise slightly worse) which means it's not REALLY a Steam Deck competitor or killer.
@@Eskoxo it doesn’t make a difference
I will keep my steam deck and wait for a 2.gen version and price doesn’t matter as this is my only device for gaming
I will keep my Steam Deck and not sell also. This machine is slightly inferior to the Steam Deck, it wouldn't change my mind hardware wise or software wise. Moreover, I've already ported most of my games and software to the Deck, and have it outfitted with accessories, cases and protection. Why would I start from scratch with an inferior product, when I've already set up everything on a better product. This is definitely a pass, and I'm glad that the ROG Asus was all hype in the end, though I expected and predicted it would be.
where is your Steam Deck review though, you said you will make a new one?
The tech chap also noted laggy joysticks
Thanks for the vid my dude! Hopefully it will be available to purchase in Australia! Over a year later and still no offical launch date for us (third party through Amazon but there are risks of course not direct) plus I LOVE the RGB! I’m a RGB freak so I think it really adds a nice touch as opposed to the Steam Deck that is so bland and boring 👏🏻
jbhifi sells then
@@fftcdragonboy7999 Thanks dude haha I posted this a few days before they officially put it out there and it was still an unknown timeframe, I have already pre-ordered with JB now, can't wait! :D
@@LifeInPixelsImages no problem so lucky xD
I’m highly considering picking this up, I’m gonna wait for side by side comparisons and other people’s reviews tho first
I recommend reading some of the reviews on Google, they're not nearly as hyped up as "This Changes EVERYTHING!" and "Steam Deck is OVER!"
They're far more realistic.
There are ALREADY videos side by side playing the same game at the same TDP and the Ally runs them with OVER 30fps above the Deck. There is really no comparisons here.
Buying a Deck when this thing is already Available is waste of money iMO.
JUST BUY IT AND IF YOU DONT LIKE IT TRY GIVING IT BACK TO ASUS VALVE LETS YOU RETURN THE DECK NO QUESTIONS ASKED
i am gonna get this thing. it seems like the perfect travel companion to have some all around gaming done. Just imagine a wireless keyboard and mouse and portable monitor and u can play anything anywhere. And i know a laptop would be the other option but its heavy as well. Great video as always!
I guess a 14" gaming laptop like the ROG G14 from Asus is lighter and easier to cary arround then this thing+monitor+mouse/keyboard...😅
@@HlgMiesmuschel If you really need that hardware, that's a solid NO for me. Extra hardware for the Steam Deck is entirely optional, means less money I need to spend and less work.
Would be cool if there were full sized tablets that not only could fold down to fit in one's pockets..like the rumoured Samsung folding tablet, but tablets could also double as monitors.
i.e. have USBC-display in as standard. (not virtual screen)
You will not need a monitor and can plug your handheld gaming PC into it instead.
Combine that with much improved folding keyboards and folding mice you litterally are carrying your entire desktop set up in your pockets, albeit large cargo pants pockets.
Lmaoooo at that point get a fucking gaming laptop.
good luck with the battery on this handheld it drain much faster than the steam deck
lag is worrying me, could you test overwatch 2 and see if you can get a constant 1080@120hz?
I know if I'm not using the 1080 screen to its fullest then its probably heresy but, if I can get better performance on games that couldn't run consistently at 60 or 40 on steam deck then I am very happy to drop it to 720. Because that's what I wanted, to play my favorites like arkham knight, elden ring, ffxv on handheld, if not 60 then definitely a solid 40.
This looks like it will do it although for less than an hour on turbo mode or just plugged in which is what I'll be doing in bed or on the couch
How does it worked docked to like a Jsaux via TV? Still getting high fps?
Thanks. Not buying this at the minute. Will be keeping a tab for future updates/videos regarding the input lag and the issues. Thnks

To auto show Touch keyboard follow these steps:
Open Windows Settings.
Click on the Time & language tab.
Click the Typing menu on the right side.
Expand the Touch keyboard section.
Tick the Show the touch keyboard when there’s no keyboard attached checkbox.
Thanks
Pre ordered one but i am a bit concerned qua control stick latency ….
A SUCKER BORN EVERY DAY 😅😅😅
Can you connect it to a external screen and play with mouse and keyboard?
I love how gamers have been getting treats lately. Both of these devices are awesome for what they are, being able to play triple A games on both in the go is a gamers dream. Wish they both had bigger batteries, but I can say the steam deck as of right now, is more optimized but I know the ROG Ally’s optimization will improve as time goes on 💯🔥🔥
Is there a section in Key Mappings where you can map the gyro sensor?
Could be some freesync setting or something if you are getting some bad lag.
i only see 720 or 1080, is there no option for 900p? maybe the sweet spot...
The SteamDeck has been around for 2yr getting Updates for games and issues.
Not fair to compare how polish the Software is or isn’t in the first week of release. They will work on firmware updates once they get all the feedback on the things that need to be revised.
Difference is that this is $700 compare to the steam deck $400 (higher versions are just SSD size)
@@hotfuzz4416 No is $599 and i don’t see how that has anything to do with what i said.
@Yashvir Gaming Zen Console peasants will always be peasants. 😆
Great hands on review! I'd love if you could test FIFA 23 on the ally as its notorius for performing badly in low end hardware.
I do notice the input lag in apex legends on steam deck. I’m not sure if they ever fixed it since I have not played it in a while. I did tweak it a bit but it’s unplayable against people who use mnk or external controller, meaning you’d just be in severe disadvantage. I would use this for single player though so i’m good.
I have the Onexplayer 2. And I admit there is some disconnect between the controller on the unit and certain games. Of course there are ways of adjusting the controller elements on the system. Now, does it help? Perhaps to a certain extent. But definitely it does need some work. Also, I am not one to bring my game device with me and operating remotely. I myself would rather play a game and using my 32" monitor. That makes it much nicer. Just my opinion.
Did you try using trobo mode. For more fps
Can u please try switch emulation with the cemu emulator on that ?
How are ppl getting their rog ally early but I still have to wait till June 13
Was so ready to preorder this but hesitant now cos of the latency with the thumbsticks I’m hearing about. You don’t buy a handheld console so that you can pair a controller externally. Hopefully they can fix it with a software update.
I'd be surprised if it wasn't fixable - whatever the exact issue is. Glad to see Batman working a lot better today, but I still couldn't play Halo
The good news, from someone who is a fan of the Steam Deck, is that ROG Asus has much WORSE support software wise. Steam Deck has regular Valve support, as well as community support. Unless that changes, ROG will run out of steam pretty fast.
@@TheMahayanist the device doesn't need software support. It's a windows machine. Windows has been out for how long? And people are developing handheld apps, overlays, and interfaces. Y'all just have never used a windows handheld. So folks are ignorant
Or maybe this is a prototype before the actual final one is released on release date.
@@reignofswords6575 hopefully!
How is the experience for Marvel Midnight suns?
i hope they fix the deadzones on the ally
Im excited to try vr on the rog ally!
Can’t u use dpad for the menus?
Preordered this one :)
So It was really eye opening when you said you liked going back to 720p to see more clearly and better battery life, also your right and windows 11 is really heavy, also how many AAA games will be playable at 80-120 fps and for anything less demanding then that 60 fps will do just fine. Right now I honestly think ill stick to my steam deck. I am looking foward to seeing what this thing can do in the future though
I am sure if the deck could pull 120hz people would be bragging about it lol…
@@powerhouse884 considering the absolute dick sucking the deck has had, even though it launched with one of the worst operating systems of all time
Hey do you know a good motherboard for the i7 12700k
How high did you raise the TDP when testing the games?
Running in turbo for most of the games I believe
Yeah so 25W
Was steam and the xbox app already preloaded with this system?
On my review sample yes, but yours should be a fresh OS install on first boot
I obviously havent held the Rog Ally, but I actually really like the feel of the Steam Deck. I love the grip and I dont want to get any skin for it becasue I love the stock finish, feels good on my man palms.
I don't know whether to upgrade from my ayaneo 2, to this .🤔
Game requests:
Retro. Some older games, Knights of the Old Republic, Fable, Atari games, whatever you like. It's one thing for it to run newer games with newer hardware and software, it's another thing to run OLDER games with newer hardware and software. That's what I'd like to see. Steam Deck is virtually perfect with running both newer and older titles, how would Windows 11 run it? I would think it would be a huge L, but you'd need to test.
Also, Bethesda games maybe. Oblivion, Fallout 3. Those tend to have trouble on my Windows 10, how would Windows 11 work?
The price, I'd build a pc for the upgrade... If one had the space for it. But there is a need for these out there. Windows needs to upgrade there os to work with handhelds now. They are missing out on a good market for more people to migrate to windows. They could even make it dock more fluently through os like old windows Dell laptops have a docking system.
Windows OS kills this.
The latench with Halo might not be the handhekds fault, i dont know what it is hut only recently ive noitced that halo infinite has been randomly too responsive or a large amount of latency i didnt notice until recently.
Can I plug this into a USB port to help mitigate some of the power drain while playing? Thinking of something like an airplane or passenger in a car.
Probably
As long as the wattage is high enough, which most wont be. Grab a high spec battery bank!
@@PcCentric thanks. I know it’ll still drain the battery what I’m asking is if it will drain it slower because in theory it would be a trickle charge. Maybe get an extra hour. That sort of thing
thats it the sticks are using software to move the controler is direct to the game by blue tooth thats why their isnt no delay
I was excited to buy this but the UK have to pay an extra £150. $699 = £558 but we have to pay £699. I think I'd rather leave it then if ita not fairly priced.
I wish ROG put micro sd card storage expansion on the new rog phone. It's really annoying and fustrating that they haven't because I use my rog phone as an ssd.
Yeah, I love it too! Definitely worth the price.
It's worth the price if you like niche things like adjusting the wattage per GPU or messing with fan settings, or if you like Windows 11, or if you don't already own a Steam Deck. Otherwise, solid pass, especially in my case.
@@TheMahayanist This is definitely not for you if you don't like to tinker. But all your issues are pretty easy to solve with the right software and customizations. The kind of people who are interested in the Ally are generally people who (gasp!) like Windows and actually enjoy customizing their system. But you do you, Bro! It's all good!
@@allenfrisch Yeah, but how are you going to get the right software support from a hardware company? Doesn't compute in my mind. But anyway, I'm on the side of the consumer, even though I'm biased. So as long as you're happy with it, then that's good.
They could've just included the 65w dock charger and the case , add 50$ extra and call it a day
Indeed but they didn’t
Damn saw it after only 13 minutes !
You never stated wattage you were playing on nor what profile you were playing on. Makes a significant difference my good sir
Use the control panel. It shows the mode like turbo which is 25W
Sticking to my deck
But i might upgrade to clamshell like gpdwin Max3 with 67whr battery and get ryzen8000U instead 100% better than vangogh
u just made the right choice im gonna stick to my steam deck as well no need to spend lot more money on a Asus rog ally when the steam deck can lots of good AAA game
Only wish there was a thunderbolt to connect to any egpu as an option
Can someone please confirm whether or not it has gyro. No gyro would be a no buy for me.
We need a dock asap bro

Sometimes big things come in small packages Marcus! 😂
I'm surprised that you didn't even try to open Batman Arkham Knight on the Steam Deck. It says "Not Supported" but the game IS supported and runs incredibly well.
I'm just pointing that out because that seems quite misleading to anyone interested in playing Arkham Knight on the Steam Deck.
The joysticks still have a lot on latency on the retail units. Reddit is blowing up with reports on this.
Do it support the nreal air glasses
Yes
please try dead space and the Callisto protocol on this
Just to note: Batman Arkham Knight does indeed run and run well on the Steam Deck using its stock SteamOS. A good chunk of games that are listed as 'unsupported' on the deck actually run fine! I've found that downloading the Decky plugin and using ProtonDB batches is more reliable than Steam's own rating system. I played all of Batman Arkham Knight on my deck and it was pretty great.
Gotta disagree with you there. If by well you mean 30fps and not even consistent 30 then yes it does run well. I've played and tested it on there and its up and down with performance.
Rog Ally's screen is too small.
Even though it is 7", like the Steam Deck, it's aspect ratio 16:9 making it even harder to read certain game fonts.
I don't know why Asus went back with this aspect ratio when all other handheld gaming PCs, tablets, laptops are moving to the overall better 16:10. Even Asus's other devices are 16:10.
16:10 is crap. 16:9 better. i hate the lack of compatability on loads of games on steam deck.
@@gintokigriffiths1086 Seriously, which game? Every game I've ran including incompatible ones work perfectly fine.
Got a like from me just for trying Civ. Excited about the new games this will play, but not a lot of talk about games that play worse without a touchpad.
Wait a darn rootin tootin second!!!!!
Arkham knight runs fine natively on the steam deck through steam os.
Can you please test final fantasy 7 remake?
would be cool if you can thunderbolt a gpu to these using the razor gpu box - 4090 on a handheld gaming haha
Docking these pocket PC’s kills the point of them being portable just game on a desktop PC then.
Ryzen Z1 Extreme is marketed to have around 8.7 TFlops of performance power, so why does it performe far worse than a PS5 which has around 10 TFlops?
Many reasons, but main one is power and cooling. Because it uses battery and has small cooling to make it handheld, it limits how fast the processor can go.
Glad you haven't tried launching Runescape 3 all Ultra on this device - can't get firmware updates on a pile of ashes, can you.
You are the only person to review this and complain about input lag from the controls on the system itself.
Can you try RUST? steam deck had a hard time running that for me.
When I looked it on google it said it has a 7840U
what are your thoughts on ASUS pulling another NEWEGG warranty issues ?? by not backing up their product and refusing Possible RMAS.. i believe all of Us as gamers need to stand together and star rejecting ASUS till they fix they Possible future RMAS problems.. I for One , as an asus fan.. will only consider MSI, EVGA specially , and Asrock . never had issues with then except Gigabyte no being that good with their Warranties ... something they gotta fix like Asus from now on... Thank you all.... for sticking together as always ..
I for one wish that all games available on all platforms.
If God of war was available on this or the steamed? I would purchase one.
I love the Steam Deck, so I was instantly curious about this, my biggest issue is the control layout... that right analogue stick from the reviews I've watched, looks to be just as uncomfortable to use as it is on the Switch. It's position which from the looks of things is only marginally better than the Switch, makes playing shooters and most 3rd person games unbearable. I wish companies entering this market placed a premium on ergonomics above all else, then performance and finally aesthetics for their products. The Switch (which everyone seems to treat as a template of sorts) to me did everything backwards, where aesthetics was the primary focus, then performance and finally ergonomics. To this day, it's impossible to play that thing for more than 15 mins in handheld mode without some kind of grip accessory. The Steam Deck is literally the only handheld you can play for hours (battery life excluded) out of the box without any accessories, it's not perfect but in terms of comfort for handheld PCs, nothing even comes close to it.
I love Steam Deck's ergonomics, I always play fighters and FPS games rn, and occasionally shoot em ups. Really have never had an issue.
You didn't sniff the vent of the Steam Deck when you picked it up when you said something was making noises, you are not a hard core user of the device.
You remind me of a younger Austin Evans.
I really want to pre order one, but I feel like with tech and games these days, it's pointless. Everything seams to be unfinished. I will more than likely buy one once the main bugs are ironed out
