I returned my Steam Deck and decided to stick with my ROG Ally instead. Perhaps your unit is defective as I've never experienced any kind of crashes on my Ally. Although the battery life is short, we're talking about a small handheld PC after all. Personally, I prefer having Windows installed (even though it's not the best), so that I can play all of my games from different game launchers. Some of the games I've played on my Ally include RE4 Remake, Tales of Arise, Monster Hunter World, Helldivers, Shadow of the Tomb Raider, Ghostwire Tokyo, and FF7 Remake, just to name a few.

I am glad I watched this.Though I played SO6 on PS5, I want to pick it up for PC and getting a Ally or Ally X to play it in a flexible hybrid format and potentially other games that aren't supported by SD. The shader compile aspect to SO6 makes the Deck a non-option. I own an SD OLED and a PC but I feel like I am missing that third pillar. Nice to hear someone mention SO6 though, really underrated game.

Sounds like you should return your Ally. We have 5 at work with none of those issues. I had the steam deck and sold it after getting the Ally. The sound is even twice as good on the Ally also. I have never had a game crash and with equal graphic settings my battery last as long as the Steam deck. I have a charger everywhere I use it anyway. The only person I know with the Steam deck finally installed windows so they could play all the games.

Same. My experience with 2 different Ally's has been flawless, except for the setup which was a bit finnicky for me. Nuked it and installed clean from a usb stick and manually installed everything. Second round I used NTLite and made a custom Os and it's been flawless too, with minimal post-setup work. Battery life has been great, besides on low watt it's obviously not as good as SD OLED. A fair trade-off for the power. Plus, BazziteOs runs really well. So best of both worlds!

on the battery life side, I have the steam deck, and it really depends on the game... triple A will get 1 hour and 50 min max, with the TDP at 10w. like batman Arkham knight. full settings also 1 hour mark. But the ally is a full PC, so for the buck, it's really good at that. I already have a steam deck, but I'm buying the ally this year to replace my laptop. coz... RoG Ally in a nutshell...
    Pros: runs on Windows 11
    Cons: runs on Windows 11
And while it has pretty powerful hardware, this also means it's not terribly portable. You get maybe an hour of battery life before you have to plug it in. That's not what I would call portable. It's more of a gaming laptop masquerading as a handheld console. So, if you want a console experience where everything feels optimized for running the games in its library and it just lets you take it and go right out of the box, then get the Steam Deck.
And the battery life is a no duh. Steam Deck OLED has a 50 watt hour battery and runs at 10-15 watt TDP max. The Ally has a 30 watt hour battery and can run at up to 30 watt TDP, on a relatively more power hungry 1080 pixel IPS display no less.
I also think that Valve will support the Steam Deck for years and years. It's a software company and it makes its money on you buying Steam games. They don't care so much about making money on the hardware. They want you to stay in the Steam ecosystem and the Steam Deck is a loss leader for them here. But Asus is a PC hardware OEM. Think about how they operate and have always operated. They are a hardware company and they make money when you buy their newest device. So they release products and quickly stop supporting them in favour of future iterations. Or they provide crappy support for them because due to their production cadence and price targets, their hardware components are sourced from all over the place and their whole logistics chain is extremely horizontal and fragmented. In its nature, it's a mess to support and maintain. And then there's always some jankiness to start with because, duh, it's a PC.
There's more to a device than its specs. This is something Apple understands. At the end of the day it's about user experience. The real value proposition is what the user experiences. Is that experience smooth, consistently playable, and requires very little thought or effort to pick up and play with? That's the Steam Deck. The RoG Ally is not these things. Sure, it has a lot of raw horse power. And just like with cars, horse power is great if you want to win races that run in a straight line. But there's more to a good driving experience than horse power. There's the whole experience: fit and finish, aesthetic feel, gas mileage, handling/steering, etc. To translate that analogy to things like console gaming ergonomics, thoughtful design, user friendliness, and battery life--the Steam Deck has the better value proposition in this arena.
I would buy a non-tech savvy friend or kid a Steam Deck knowing they'd probably enjoy it and not struggle with much. But I couldn't imagine recommending an RoG Ally to anyone without some big caveat emptors about what to expect. Given the form factor, people will naturally expect a console experience from the thing but really it's just a Windows gaming PC. And it comes with all the drawbacks of a gaming PC, with the added nuisance that Windows 11 was never designed with delivering a console experience and does a terrible job at it in the Ally.

    • @joshl6275
      @joshl6275 Před měsícem

Obviously, you can. That doesn't mean Windows 11 offers a better handheld console gaming experience than Steam OS does. The RoG Ally has many strengths in terms of raw performance, content selection, and customizability. But it comes with all the drawbacks of a Windows PC. Maybe more so, because the Windows 11 desktop experience is not designed to be very usable on a 7" in screen controlled by a gaming joystick and D-pad.
So for me it boils down to a discussion about value proposition. I see more value in the Steam Deck because it provides the better overall gaming experience with little or no muss or fuss. I can just pick it up and go without extra thought. Which is kind of the point of games, right? They're supposed to be fun. I don't consider blue screens of death and annoying Windows update popups fun. I don't consider low battery notifications after less than an hour of game time fun. I don't consider having to troubleshoot driver issues and run a bunch of third party updates just to get the thing working out of the box fun. But this is the kind of "fun" you purchase when you buy an Ally.
Don't get me wrong, I'm a PC gamer. I own a desktop PC which I built and customized with love. But that doesn't mean I want to tinker with my handheld consoles. I want a handheld console that functions like a console and that I don't have to put much thought into before enjoying it.
So which platform is going to give you more actual fun versus headaches? My bet is the fun to headache ratio on the Ally is going to be much more skewed towards headaches compared to the Deck.
Maybe in the future Microsoft will wise up and develop a Windows edition tailored specifically to handheld console gaming. And maybe OEM's will actually manage to properly support these things over time, rather than all but abandoning support for them as soon as next year's model comes out. When that day comes, maybe the Steam Deck's value proposition will have real challengers.

Idk why you didn't do a comparison with the oled deck but these handhelds are for completely different people. The ROG Ally is for people want all the game launchers and better performance but don't care about the annoying setup or the bad battery life.
The steam deck is for people want the same experience you get on a console but with all the benefits of PC put into a handheld that can play their steam library. ROG Ally is the normie's handheld that normies flock to when they wanna play their AAA normie games a lil better, sacrificing the whole point of it being a handheld bcuz AAA games are the only thing they know. The WORST games to play on a handheld smh
They're in it for budget PC gaming rather than portability. Either that, or they have no idea what they're buying and just following trends. The Ally is literally just a sports car with a 1 gallon gas tank. Best way to put it
If they want budget AAA PC gaming for $700, a Mini PC would do better in erry way to the ROG Ally, especially since portability isn't even a factor anyways. There's literally no point in having an Ally. It sucks at what it's supposed to do, and it can't even match a Mini PC of the same price (or maybe lower). I almost bought a B550 Mini PC for $700 back in 22. Uses DESKTOP hardware, a Ryzen 7. That alone blows the Ally out of the water. Goes beyond a measly 30W, too
And on top of that, the Steam Deck/OLED has better performance at 15W and less BY FAR than the Ally or LeGo in the same games. (Although that varies between games) Power efficiency is what makes a handheld superior, not 'muh power' or super high ends specs or RGB

The analogy is incorrect, it is not a sports car, it is more akin to a compact electric bike. Mileage is low but you reach comparable speeds. The faster you go the faster you expend energy.
Similarly, you are playing AAA games on a more powerful (and power hungry chipset) and expecting the battery to last as long as playing less demanding game. That is unrealistic and ignoring the fact that the handheld has brought to us AAA gaming on a portable mode. The use case for these devices are typically during travelling and light transit which usually last under 2 hours. There are also plenty of power banks and attachments that can essentially double your battery capacity, a workaround that can easily solve most of the known issues
Dunking on the 1st generation device discourages innovation. The earlier cars in the past barely goes as far as what we have today, the same with laptops and smartphones from a performance to power use basis. Terms like ‘clowns’ and ‘useless’ are not constructive to the discussion and ignores the fact that there is a demand for these kind of products. If these devices do not fit your requirements, I suggest NOT buying them now and wait till the next or subsequent generation of devices. Just gotta use common sense
