- Bernard Chanticleer's father gives him two simple words of advice: "Grow up." Bernard knows that his first step is to find a girl who's "willing," but he passes up a sure thing, Amy Partlett, for a more elusive goal. Her name is Barbara Darling, an inscrutable go-go dancer. More than a few obstacles keep Bernard from his dream world. There's his doting mother, who mails him locks of her hair and weeps at the thought of her baby as a man; there's a malicious rooster, trained to attack pretty girls, patrolling the halls of his New York City rooming house; and most of all, there's Barbara herself. She turns out to be a man hater, emotionally scarred by the lecherous wooden-legged hypnotherapist who "counseled" her in high school. All in all, Bernard finds himself in an improbable universe with a calculated clumsiness designed to evoke his confusing coming-of-age.

When I watched this cult classic in 1966, I was only sixteen. You can imagine my surprise when I realized, decades later, that it was made by a brilliant young director named "Francis Ford Coppola." It made a powerful impact on me, especially the riveting performance by Elizabeth Hartman as a sexy, man-eating model who lured men into her web of wonderful wackiness, the polar opposite of who she was in real life. I loved her role so much that I bought the DVD, I watch it from time to time, and in fact I am watching it as we speak. I can actually remember the day she committed suicide, alone in her New York apartment, as if it were only yesterday. I mourn her still. RIP Elizabeth Hartman. Your suffering is over, but your spirit remains in our memories forever.
You are so reverent💖✝️
@tiffsaver Elizabeth Hartman lived in Pittsburgh, not New York, during the last few years of her life. She died in Pittsburgh. She was born and raised in Youngstown, Ohio.
I’ve never seen Elizabeth as fragile. Delicate, perhaps, but not fragile. A beautiful soul who transcended this world. Thank you to Biff for making the world better while she was in it. Thank you for staying as long as you did, even though it is heartbreaking to not have kept you in it decades longer. RIP.
We love her💖✝️
Filmdates Jun 1, 1966 - Jul 20, 1966. Early Francis Ford Coppola film. Elizabeth Hartman (1943-1987) 💜She reminds me of Sandy Dennis.
Hartman was an incredible original, a unique talent, a MARVELOUS actress. What a very sad thing to have so suddenly, tragically lost her.
A beautiful actress she was. Tragic end to her 😢
How did she kill herself
@@lemarcuspiggee7778 She jumped out a fifth story window.
Elizabeth will always be loved and remembered💜💖✝️
A gifted actress who sadly never managed to overcome her demons, and even worse was the fact that Hollywood never knew what to do with her. A clinically depressive and anxious person for the latter part of her life, she committed suicide on June 10th 1987, tragically trowing herself out of her apartment window, after alienating practically everyone close to her.
Among the few friends who remained close from her Hollywood career were director Francis Coppola and the "great" Geraldine Page, both of whom continued to communicate with and support Hartman throughout her life and career.
Interestingly, Page died of a heart attack in the early hours of June 13, 1987, having very likely read about her friend and mentee's suicide in the New York Time only some hours before, where Hartman's obituary had been published on June 12th.
Two talents gone in a single moment. "I can’t wait until I’m 45 and get all those great parts", Hartman said in 1971. She died at 43.
Hollywood can be cruel💜✝️
Coppola's first and best movie.
how dare he sneeze on Elizabeth Hartman what a dork
Apparently, there are couple of morons on this channel who don't understand that this "dork" was ACTING, motorhead.
Wow. Thanks, Jason. Didn't know that about Neely O'Hara. As much as I love Patty Duke in the role, I imagine Elizabeth would have been extraordinary in it. So gifted.
Maybe its better that she did not appear in such a trashy film. It would have done nothing for her career.
The original Neely O'Hara in " Valley Of The Dolls ". Hartman gave a screentest that knocked the socks off of director Mark Robson and producer David Weisbart. They were
wild about her test. She accepted the role in January 1967 and a press release was given
stating that Elizabeth Hartman has been cast as Neely O'Hara. For some reason it never
happened and Patty Duke inherited the role.
I never knew that that would have been interesting to see her in the movie
I didn't find out about Elizabeth Hartman's death until decades later what a loss
The GOAT
This was a precipitous for the movie Midnight Cowboy.
She was too good of an actress to play opposite of this shnook.
you're an idiot. Kastner was a brilliant actor.
Shnook?
He was SUPPOSED to be a "shnook," shnook.
Coppola.
