As if growing up during the Great Depression wasn’t difficult enough, Carol also had alcoholic parents. They often fought with her maternal grandmother who raised her and her sister. Her escapes were drawing and the movie theater, and she immediately fell in love with acting. A mysterious stranger gave her the money to start her career. Lucille Ball helped her land and then guest-starred on The Carol Burnett Show. She charmed everyone she knew from then on, including Julie Andrews, Vicki Lawrence, and, of course, the audience.
Carol has always been a go-getter who went from every career opportunity. It occasionally puts too much strain on her relationships, including the father of her 3 daughters, Joe Hamilton. Addiction reared its ugly head again with her first daughter, Carrie. She became an alcoholic and needed help. Carol knew she had to do something and, in her own words, you have to love your children enough to let them hate you. Their relationship eventually healed when Carrie got sober at the age of 18. It was great timing because neither one knew how little time they had left together. Lung cancer spread to her brain and took Carrie at the tender age of 38.
Carol’s oldest daughter Erin also became hooked on drugs. She had to take ownership of her grandson Dylan. Whether or not it’s a permanent arrangement, he’ll certainly have a life full of laughs and a grandmother to look up to. I remember watching her show as a teenage girl, babysitting on Saturday nights, when my well-off friends were free to go on dates, while I needed every penny for school clothes, shoes, bus fare, and school supplies. What a night Saturday was back then. Mary, Rhoda, Phyllis, and Carol. Truly a ladies night! I adored Harvey Korman, of course, and later Tim Conway, and I wished I was old enough to date the most gorgeous man in the world, Lyle Waggoner. @@joycebrackbill-henderly8311 Thank you for your lovely response----I was delighted to read it! I am obviously more of an 'old soul', if I remember Sid Caesar----you so rarely find comedians anymore who excel in hand-written short sketches like he did. My Dad had the great old NYC sarcastic sense of humor (which his twin daughters inherited "Thanks Dad!")----and Sid Caesar made him laugh more than any other comedian! He was so original! And---yes---re children's 'chatter": I live in Manhattan on the Upper West Side---a bustling but basically quiet, entertaining area, one block from green, leafy Riverside Park and the Hudson River. (Never experienced any violence in my life!) And my humor can be very off-beat----so I always remind my visitors not to be puzzled by our very good-natured sarcasm!! At any rate, I cannot BELIEVE the way kids talk today----sooooooo differently from when I grew up in the 50's and 60's! (And the way they speak to their parents!!! They would have been 'swatted around' growing up in our family of five!) Anyway, I do have a great time remembering so well and find it a lot of fun recalling those 'good, old days;'. Wow----never thought I'd be old enough to say THAT! :-) All my best to you and your family, Lynn :-)

@@Garkenrat Really, a boarding school is temporary, and the children go home often. Plus, it is a stable, educational routine structured environment. That is the type of lifestyle most rich people tend to uphold.
There are millions of people who had great lives who also went to boarding school.
Now, not all had such lives, but ask the rich and wealthy if they are always so mad at their parents for providing them with a good roof and education and meeting others who became lifelong friends.
A drug addicted mom would have destroyed that child or near enough. Carol Burnette was already fully immersed in contracts in multimedia. So are you saying she should have broken all her contracts, and made others lose their jobs and income to stay at home to raise her daughters child?
I can only imagine it would not have bothered you if the Dad had been in a viable workforce with employees you would have never suggested he was neglectful by sending the boy to boarding school.
Double standards are alive and well.

Yes, some parents, rich, poor or otherwise are neglectful, but providing a safe place to live and an education, as well as being able to see children often, is not a bad life. Millions did ok by it.
btw, Carol was in her 80's when having the responsibility of her grandson, so are you saying you could easily raise a child and teenager in your 80's?

I know what you mean; sometimes, I think that very same dynamic is at work between mothers and their gay sons as well. All my life, I just could not figure out why I could easily make friends and begin what seemed like great relationships, but they would eventually fall apart, sometimes quickly....almost as soon as they met my mother. What I didn't realize, of course, until one of these people were brave enough to tell me, was that my mother was calling them, their extended family members, etc., behind my back, and telling them TERRIBLE things about me, some of the most vicious lies I've ever heard! For YEARS, I couldn't understand why, but quite often, people would simply say, "Because she's JEALOUS of you." Well, that's just insane to me, but after I saw an expensive therapist for about 6 mos., she said, "Well, I usually see this issue between mothers and their daughters; in any case, you are not the problem here, I'd really like to meet your mother." I thought to myself, Oh, I'm so bad off, she can't tell me, she has to tell my mom instead. She finally met her, then set a time for me to come back in, with my mother, unbeknownst to me, present as well. She told her that I was on the verge of a nervous breakdown, and that if that happened, "it's ALL going to be on YOUR shoulders, NOT his!" I'm absolutely not saying that this was/is the same dynamic at work with all of these other mother/child situations, but that's what was going on in my case. HOW can a parent be SO insanely jealous of one of their OWN KIDS? I think I was resented, in my case; my parents "had" to get married, and my mother absolutely hated my dad, hated him, and she made no secret about this.

When an addict has their child removed to foster or another family member, they go through great lengths to make the new surrogate parents life miserable, and in doing so, they make their own childs life miserable. I know from personal experience, it takes years for the addicted parent to finally "forgive" or even get to speaking terms with the one they "think" took their child on purpose. They usually do not take personal responsibility.

Love Carol Burnett, she made laughter in my heart. In those days many people were addicted or abusive, and not too many people knew how to handle real-life problems. However, in those days everyone kept quiet and never spoke about family problems. I too grew up in a dysfunctional home and left at a young age only to return to come back to an ending that I did not want to see or go through all over again. I love Lucille Ball from age 6 to date. Always enjoyed when Carol and Lucy got together on each other's show, particularly the ones where Lucy played on Carol's. Carol had two daughters with addiction issues, unfortunately one died of cancer; Lucy's son Desi had addiction issues too. Fortunately he rehabilitated. Again, misfortune strikes - his wife died of cancer in 2015 and he granddaughter died of cancer at 31 (I think). Carol unfortunately had parents with alcohol issues, Lucy's father died before age 4, also her mgm and maternal aunt (who she lived with) also died young. Her mother remarried and was away with husband Ed working - for months and years at a time. Both these wonderful women, gave love and laughter to us - overcoming very deeply sad issues. Thank you to both.
