  • This episode of our ongoing Guitar Stories series features the rare and beloved Framus Texan acoustic guitar, model 5/195, hand-crafted in the Heart of Bavaria in West Germany in 1966. It is a well-preserved and unique sounding vintage beauty. What does a violin-arched back acoustic guitar made of all spruce sound like? We’ll get to hear it as Ed Hale shares one of his favorite guitars.
The episode also shines a light on the fact that European guitars like Eko, Levin, Hagstrom, Hofner and Framus, once extremely popular from the 1950s to the 1970s, are now often overlooked and left out of the guitar discussion entirely.
An ongoing series featuring guitar stories, demos, reviews, histories, new and old song discussions and plenty of playing all in an attempt to answer the question “but Ed which one is your favorite?”
    Tuned: Open A Standard
    Strings: D’Addario Phosphor Bronze 12-54
    Songs: “Sunset over Mars”

Just brought home a 5/196 from my local guitar shop. Such an interesting piece. I went to buy a Silvertone Speed Demon, but couldn't pass up the Framus.

It's pronounced 'Fraw~mus' properly. Greetings from Germany 🇩🇪

Thank you! Here in the States we always says “Fray…” though obviously it’s not right as you point out.

I have Framus texan I have no idea which model exactly because most probably it's a prototype. My father bought it for me for around 60$ as a college graduation gift from his bandmate seven or eight years ago. Inside the soundhole there is no serial number no signature no model number only the letter "P". It also lacks the string bar on the head and some other features I found on other texans. I've written to Framus Museum in Germany and they are not 100% sure but willing to agree that it might be one of the prototypes. Amazing guitar, totally unique sound but now it waits until I have the money to do some restoration work. Due to rough storing conditions string height became super high and at the same time top has sunk.

Thank you for putting a spotlight of these brands! This is THE ONLY time I've heard anybody mention Ecko....My cousin had one and what a fine instrument it was too! I have a 1969 Framus Texan. I used to dream about owning a Gibson J45. I'd still love a J45 but lets say I dream about owning one a little less now that I have my Framus.

A lot of instrument builders were based in Markneukirchen including Martin.

i have a near identical guitar, recently i discovered that instead of x bracing mine has fan bracing, this is rare on a steel string and would also affect the sound considerably! love it!

He mentioned a Hofner guitar in his collection and it does use fan bracing BUT many of these are just laminates. Same with Framus. I have a 12 stringer and only after examination you see even the top is laminated. All these guitars have big jingle and STRINGY sound. The box is a mirror for strings . They're great for stage but forget woody acoustic flavor. 12 string Texan is also stringy. Even the big bridge is screwed with four screws, not glued and the strings transmit little thru metal elevated saddle. The neck is too narrow for 12 strings so its good for playing solo lines or cords where you don't care so much about dumping adjacent strings. The build quality is real heavy tank.I love to have it.

Great video! But the 5/195 is the Western, the 5/196 is the Texan :)

I found a 12 string acoustic with a rosette with a inlaid sunpoints all the way around it. They were pretty large. I don't know the brand well enough to know if this was something added to the guitar or not. But it does look like the Texan because of the bridge in the metal that was wrapped around the tips. Do you know this guitar ?

Nice, this Framus Texan is your favorit guitar. But in the sixties,Framus weren't the best instruments they made.In the seventies, they made much better guitars,to materials and workmanship.I have a Framus, model 75La Jumbo style guitar,Nashville type headstock.George Harrison played such a guitar, after the Beatles.
Check out also Klira guutars, especially the ones from the seventies.

What is the price of a guitar like this

    • @transcendenttv

They’re not that expensive, considering. They’re hard to find. Ones in good shape and that play well. That’s the trick. But $500-$800.
