They shouldn't have changed her age. She was around Rhaenyra's age in the books. They made her and Laenor younger. Laenor was alive in the books during the Council of 101.

She was 5 years older than Rhaenyra in the book. Laena is one of the characters they butchered. her death especially was character assassination.
And they make alcient younger too so dumb they just want people to feel sorry for her and that ruins her as a character

It's not like they could have her being like an older sister to Rhaenyra so they can have the friendship between the two characters that they wanted. I like what they are are doing with their relationship but making them the same age was very stupid.

It's really simple. First, he comes from pure valyrian descent, which means he's inhumanly beautiful he also was described as dashing daring and charming something I think both laena and rhaenyra would like

Laena and Rhaenyra were described to be very close in the books and the dance was triggered in part by the Hightowers’ scheming to put their descendant on the throne. I don’t think it makes sense to say that the dance would still happen cause that would be ignoring a lot of the context surrounding it in the first place.
you kinda ignored what caused the dance in the first place, having two families with claims to the throne and a female heir in a male dominant world just insures a power struggle. if not they directly them their descendants or supporters would fight for it with dragons, alliances and armies.

All else the same, Rhaenyra would still have had illegitimate children and the dance would have just kicked off as the Targaryens Vs the Velaryons.
As the Velaryons wouldn't have wanted Strong bastards on the throne instead of their true heirs from Viserys X Laena.
While Viserys would have stuck with the terrible and unpopular decision that Rhaenyra should succeed him.
The Dance wouldn't have taken place if Laena and Viserys married.
Rhaenyra and Daemon would still have been caught in a compromising situation regardless when Rhaenyra kept refusing to pick a husband, and Otto would likely be trying to scheme to get Laena's children under his thumb when it became clear to him Rhaenyra saw right through his schemes.
Thus Rhaenyra would still have been made to marry quickly, most likely to Laenor as Corlys knows full well that Viserys has Rhaenyra as heir instead of Daemon and wants to be sure his blood ends up on the Throne regardless so will push for the match.
Then with Corlys having his lineage (whether actually biologically related or not) on the Iron Throne, the matter of the succession will be decided most likely peacefully as a family matter.
Instead of Otto it would have been Corlys scheming if he had a male grandson
not how its gonna go down if viserys had a son woth the velaryon girl and with deamon and rheanyra still being somewhat together the hightowers will be forced to support the velaryons meaning the dance will happen but end quicker with the velaryons and hightowers winning

That's the whole point. Corlys' ambitions is why he supported Rhaenyra when the Dance started, he didn't care so much about blood than names. Whether they shared his blood or not, Corlys always saw Rhaenyra's children as his grandchildren. He would obviously support his grandchildren over anyone else when it comes to how the story was actually written. Even if it means going back on his previously held belief that Daemon is the heir on account of being male.
He also does not like Otto Hightower. Corlys is no fool, he knows Otto Hightower has the ear of the king like nobody else on the council has, what Otto Hightower says goes essentially, and it was Otto Hightower making sure Viserys never aided Corlys with the Stepstones until forced to, always pushing for the "diplomatic" route.
If either way, whether Rhaenyra becomes queen, or his potential grandson from Laena becomes king, Corlys has his descendent on the Throne, his dislike of Otto will probably push him to scheme against Otto to get him further away from Viserys than anything else.
Corlys would have more incentive to keep the house together, as now his family would be split too if a Dance occurs.
Corlys and Viserys would work together, most likely to secure Rhaenyra's succession as Viserys' mind won't really change in this scenario either, and if the Hightowers try to scheme to put Laena's children on the Throne they would not get nearly as much support due to not being related to the monarch they're leading the fight to impose.
@@karamanid Corlys isn't that much of a schemer. I mean he does scheme, but not like Otto Hightower. He'd probably just go and have a frank conversation with Viserys and they'd sort it out that way, after all either way Corlys would be guaranteed a grandson or granddaughter on the Iron Throne, and being married to Rhaenys he'd probably be happy enough with Rhaenyra who he already liked well enough and she already liked him well enough.
Yeah and Laena as well as Corlys would have been more agreeable to marrying their children together to help succession complaints. Also with the Velaryons already secured rhaenyra may not have been forced to marry Laenor, though of the brothel incident still happened this could still happen

I didn't like the race swap. But I think the main reason they did it was to help make clear for the audience, that Rhaenyra's children were Strong boys and not half black.
The Valeryons looks exactly like the Targeryans in the books. They are from the same place. They have been intermarrying and mixing with each other for ages. It makes no sense that one family is pale white and the other is black.
It is said in the show that the Targaryens were higher class citizens in Valyria and that the Velaryons settled at the coast which made them travel around and marry with exotic people

I think they did it for one diversity and two because it makes it more obvious that Rhaynera's children are not Laenors.
It makes no sense but it is what it is, it certainly isn't a big problem. If you let a minor detail decide whether you like the series or not, you should redefine your priorities. Rhaenyra was also different, both in appearance and characterization, and in my opinion that's a much bigger change.

I doubt there would be a dance, or at least there would be a lesser chance of a dance tbh
Think of it:
- Laena marries Viserys, maybe they have Laenor marry Rhaenyra but thats optional since Laena's queen.
- Then have one of Laena's twins marry either Jace or Luc
- The Velaryon's are cool with it as long as Corlys gets the power and influence he wants
- Rhaenyra's boys and the twins get along anyway so even if they dont have romantic feelings, they can at least be friends in a lavender marriage
- Tho, I think things will still sour if Laena still dies due to birth complications and dragonfire but at least the twins are still ok ig?
- Less Allicent and Rhaenyra drama (honestly, I missed those two when they were friends) (also, this is IF Otto doesnt swallow his pride and wed Allicent to Daemon)

Laena's twins were all girls, so Rhaenyra would still be higher in the succession line being the heir since only males would take priority. But even if she had a boy, she would probably be far more interested in Flying than the crown, and it would be the boy or the Velaryon who wanted to put the boy on the throne.
Corlys wanted someone of his blood and name in the throne. His family would have put any male heir coming from Laena as king.

I just don’t like how they made her and Corlys black just for the sake of diversity. They could have done it with another character, like Cristion Cole or something. There is a reason the Velyarons are white. They are meant to be the blood of old Valyria just like the Targs. I have no problem if they made some other characters black but when they change someone that is white for a reason like Snow White you start to realize how much they are forcing it in regardless of story.

In the books valyrians are described as tall, deep violet eyed, beautiful and with silver OR gold hair. Those are the key Valyrian traits, houses like the Daynes show that you can have those traits while still belonging to a darker skinned ethnic group. Notice how the show didn’t make dany especially tall, or give any of the other valyrians golden hair. That sort of albino-esque design is just one interpretation of Valyrian traits, and the fact we only see the one family is no indication their entire ethnicity is like that, just like how you can go to India and find people who have skin tone that goes all the way from olive to super dark, and yet they can all still call themselves Indian.

Valyrians are quite clearly an ethnic group, all originating from Old Valyria. You could not conceivably have the elf like albino features of Valyria combined with the obviously African physical features of an African, and magically pretend like they’re the same ethnicity.

If laena married viserys and had a son, the Velaryons would put their full support behind laena's son to be next heir. Rhaenyra would've stood no chance

It just dawned on me how exactly the dance could still happen. If Laena married Viserys, Corlys wouldn't have a reason to back Rhaenyra's claim to the throne. He wouldn't have pretended that her children were legitimate. He would have pushed Viserys to name his firstborn son with Laena as his heir. And he would have felt slighted enough to start a war if/when Viserys stuck to his guns

I think Laena should have been Visery’s choice in the books (series sux)….it would have solidified the kingdom. I doubt there would have been been a succession crisis from that angle. Dawmon would have swooped down on Rhaeneyra even sooner to establish his position as the King consort. And everyone would have lived happily ever after. Viserys marrying into the family that was the most religious and most anti Targaryen culture family was just dumb.

Despite what many people say, I just don't see a war happening between Rhaenyra and Laena. They were very close and loved each other (a bit too much). I can understand Corlys becoming greedier over time, but Rhaenys would most likely shut his crazy attempts down since she also loved and respected Viserys, her cousin. Laena and Rhaenyra's children however... I can see them starting the dance much later. (I assume Coryls would poison his grandchildren, much like how Otto did).
The war might not errupt if Laena would not force her eventual children with Viserys to took over The crown, that depends how much Corlys would enforce that, and if aje would agree to a union od her daughter with Jacearys. Interesting alternative
If the dance still would have happened with leana marrying viserys, the velaryon navy would surround dragonstone and starve it out. If rhaenyra tries to Sally out on dragonback, vhagar, meleys and seasmoke get some lunch. Easy win for the blues.

In show version they change her to younger and one reasons why Viserys chose the Hightower he didnt want wait until she comes of age.
The dance would’ve never occurred if Viserys had married Laena instead of Alicent. Laena and Rhaenyra were around the same age and always close friends (possibly lovers). Alicent was older than Rhaenyra and they were never friends in the books. It was Otto Hightower and Alicent's scheming that led to war. Laena and Rhaenyra would’ve betrothed their children to each other and Corlys would've supported their decision because, unlike Otto, he understood that it was the family name, not the actual bloodline, that mattered. Corlys wouldn’t have cared if the consort was a boy or a girl so long as they carried the Velaryon name. People need to pick up a book once in a while instead of making baseless accusations centered around the biased views portrayed in an exceedingly flawed show.

The Velaryons had generations of cousin to cousin marriages, mostly with their Targaryen cousins. They don't marry enough non-Valyrians to change their looks. But somehow they ended up looking like Summer islanders.

Same here, I don't read the books, I only partially read the first volume of ASoIaF but Idk if it's the author's style or the translation but I can't focus and I get bored quickly. Also I don't like the differences between the show and the books, I guess I would have appreciated them better if I read them before watching the show...
