Update: had to mute the audio in a couple sections due to copyright đ not that it will make me money, but I think itâs unfair that someone can claim the $$ from the entire video if even a small amount has their audio in the background. See below for voiceover that was muted âŹïž
22:20 on I was talking a bit about how I was going to dropbar it. The plan was to use cable disc brakes so I could swap between the two, thereâs fixtures that allow you to disconnect the brake cable (so you can then attach another bar setup with the same fixture) easily.
I do have cable disc brakes I could put on it, but the riser/flat bar setup is too fun so I havenât put dropbars on it yet. Sometime this year Iâll throw some on, though!
I plan on doing a little update video, to show how the bike is currently for those on CZcams. đ â€ïž
Sorry for the inconvenience and weird muted parts! â€ïž thank you for checking out the video đ
@@toastyrides Still waiting on this thing to go dropbar, just for the heck of it. This is also my favorite of your builds. I've watched this one a couple of times already.
I have finally found someone who talks while restoring. You sir just earned a sub and I'm looking forward to your future content!!
Thanks for letting me know you like this style!! đ glad I could earn the sub, thanks so much đ
My Specialized Hardrock is 26 years old and is still in almost perfect condition! I ride it every year but keep it inside the house in the winter, which helps.
Man, that's one hell of a bike
Thank you! đ
Have upgraded a few lovely old titanium hardtails, and decided to go with modern discs up front (used decade-old Ebay XTRs) on an upgraded fork, but kept the cants in back -- they weigh less, don't require any fuss, and are plenty strong for a rear. If you want something really powerful, get XTR v-brakes.
I honestly love cantilever brakes they lock so easy when set up good
The mod is very cool but I could never justify the time and money.
OR go for Magura hydraulic rim brakes at the rear instead
Beautiful bike. Thanks for sharing
Looks sick. Well done.
Great video love it !
Enjoyed the video. Sweet bike in both configurations.
Cheers mate! Glad you enjoyed it đđ€
first time ive seen a disc conversion done safely
I love your approach to restoration, keep it real!
THE SURLY CORNER BAR IS PERFECT FOR THAT BIKE
Haha I definitely plan on getting one đ itâll be for my Kona Unit X, though, I think đ
I have a 1998 Hard Rock in muscle car yellow :D Its my daily driver and i love and seeing vids like this make me so stoked to get some upgrades for it!
Oh sweet!! đ thats good, hope you get some sweet upgrades for it when you can đ€
That orange chain ring looks great đ
I finally found one for myself! Always loved your hardrock, and I just picked up a black version which was very poorly concerted to a gas engine bike...:(
Just built it up last night as a single speed after tearing off the motor, and other garbage. Love it.
Awesome!! Thatâs cool that you found one đâ€ïž
Glad you like the bike, these are a great era đ€
very cool build !!!
Thank you! Glad you liked it đ€
I've been using XT 739 V-Brake levers since 2006 and XT 760 V-Brakes since 2007, and I find they work better in the wet. They worked better when I had XTR/XT replaceable brake padsđ€đ€. I'm using Jegwire ones now, which aren't as good.
Have you tried Koolstop salmon compound brake pads? Theyâre great, nicer on rims than others too. Highly recommend
Super sick manđ„
Thank you! đ€
Saw this on IG and had to check out the build, love that look man.
Oh sweet! Thanks heaps for checking out the video! đ€ cheers đ
Hey Mister Toasty.
You are doing great. 26 is still the real deal. Keep on, course you are comfyđ
Keep coming back to this want to do something similar but with a 90s hybrid.
Very nice job buddy!
Thanks heaps! đđ€ Iâm loving this bike! It has a Surly Midnight Special fork on it now, too. Better than the alloy Cannondale one I put on it at first and it rides really well with it đ„łđ
This is pretty old but a trick I use for handle bar grips is hairspray acts as a good lube to get them on and helps keep them on once dry.
Finaly someone else who prefert friction shifter!
Haha I prefer it by heaps, I love friction shifting đ€â€ïž
Very cool!
Thank you đ€
I like your work making a custom bike tailored just for you.
Love this video bud exactly what i am into thanks for sharing and well done stay safe....colin .đŽââïžđđ»đ
Just seen this as a recommendation, I've a Hardrock Comp I'm building, full XT M739 throughout, original saddle, forks, bars. Mavic M400 rims on XT M737/738 hubs. Tioga City Slickers tyres 2.10 on 26 rims.
All period correct for a 1999 model.
I'm so looking forward to watching this vid to see if you can sway me to a retro mod, I've also got a Stumpy maybe 96/97? waiting to get some love.
Very cool. Iâm doing a restomod Mountain Cycle San Andreas. Itâs going to be stunning.
Wow Excellent
love it...!
Cheers mate! Hope itâs going well over there đ€
Wasn't too keen on your handlebar choice until I saw how much fun you were having with it)). Nice work!
Haha yeah itâs so fun like this!! đ thank you đ€đ
Klunkers
Nice build! For me I have almost 100% converted all my retro bikes over to hollotech 2 they just seem so nice once youâve tried it itâs hard to go back :(
yeah, I have a few hollowtech bikes and I can really feel the weird wobbling that square taper cranks give when pedalling.
Ride slow,die whenever!
Lol đ
I Like it! Beautiful bike, awesome and inspiring video!đ
that bike is sweet.
That looks great. I really like the bracket assembly for the front rack.
I wonder how well the anodized surface on the rims will hold up to the brakes.
all good
it kinda looks like an se bike i like it dudee!!!!!!!
âJust a HardrockââŠ.. cmon sweet bike and cool build!
I am an avid tinkerer of bikes and love changing them around so new subscriber here........I did prefer it as the cruiser, though! For the money you spent I would have bought n+1.
Always tinkering! Haha đ€ thanks for subscribing!
Yeah I wouldnât have, Iâm glad I converted this đ€€
I love these retro frame modernizations, but when is someone going to do the ultimate retro modernization and do a dandy horse with downhill geo?
This would Rule on my Bridgestone MB3!
A NZ resto mod video woo
đ„łđ€
I did basically the same build with a 93 kona lava dome but I made it single speed.
Damn, that sounds rad!! đđ€
Hi all! Thereâs a glitch(or two) in the audio. I kept having issues and it wouldnât resolve, roughly 7:30 in đ
Basically itâs a run down of the parts, and for some reason itâs jumbled up so at one point Iâm pointing at the shifter box but talking about stickers đ€·ââïžđ
Sorry if there are any more issues!!
Thank you for watching đđ
Koga Miyata restoration next up đ
Spicer cycles in Indiana did my trek 950 like this the old bikes do very well with disc currently running zoom cable actuated hydraulic in gold but thinking about upgrading to shimano hydraulic or swapping the current pads
cool transformation...! I really loved the cruiser its been before, but hey that's our addiction...:-)
Thank you! Me too, most of those parts are now on the other Hardrock that was in a previous video đ
8:36 If you strip a thread, use a helicoil. They're stronger than the original threading, anyway.
Definitely đđ€
Sweet build!!! I would like to ask... Where did you get, I can get :D, the winged bottle cage? Such a detail and makes it perfect! Thank you for your videos btw. Really helpful and enjoyable!!
The bike is solid and my Ebike conversion went great. czcams.com/users/postUgkxHL1v1R3NE5x4KiYfyt8dnQmyNYz7qi5L Very smooth ride at 30mph with no problems (135 miles ridden so far). The picture is a bit deceiving - there is WAY less space in the center of the frame than it shows. The suspension connection takes up the entire thing. So I needed to attach my battery on the bottom of the frame and my controller on the top. Instructions for assembly were lacking but honestly it wasn't too hard to figure out even though I have very little bike knowledge. Watched some youtube videos on adjusting the disk brakes but that was it. Still, I am loving it and very happy with the purchase.
Love the bike design czcams.com/users/postUgkxHL1v1R3NE5x4KiYfyt8dnQmyNYz7qi5L and functionality. It is hard to align the front tired to center the disk brakes. The brake wheel touches the stationery side of the brake caliper and pad. I aired the tire up to 40 psi as the markings say 40-60psi. Left the house for a few hours and came back to an exploded innertube. All in all it seems to be a good bike. Have not ridden it yet though so that's the max of my knowledge. Update, put a new innertube made sure the tire was set properly and it did the same thing in under 20 minutes as second pic shows.
is it possible to add a mid drive motor to the bike? i have one and was wondering that
Which spec of steering set I have to use to convert these old frames from standard thread to ahead set?
What make and model are the pedals?? Looks like they have mounts for clips, Iâve been looking for exactly that!
I think they are VP or Wellgo pedals, similar to Wellgoâs âLU 987â ones anywayđ
How did you bolt the disk to the rear rim hub? Looks like you are using the old rims I didn't see it in the video the adapter if one was used.
hi how did you fit dos 27icnh wheels? this bike come with 27 wheels?
Hey, it came with 26â wheels. It only has a 27.5 in the front, with a non-factory fork, some retro mtbâs fit 27.5 in the rear but havenât tried with this one!
@@toastyrides nice! Is mulet! Better for riding ?
@@mygoalcrash8077 itâs nice, 27.5 front and rear would be better though đ mullet just gives it a little more roll over ability off-road than the 26â wheel
@@toastyrides wat size tyres? 2.2?
@@mygoalcrash8077 2.1 front and 2.25 rear đ€
So Iâm not sure if itâs just me. But the audio did not match the video at all. But I love the build. Great job.
Where do you get your baskets? Love the videos it has inspired me to do more 90s builds
If youâre in NZ then Goat Cycles has Wald 137 baskets which are good quality. I use 139âs and 137âs on my bikes. (Otherwise BlueLug has Wald and they ship pretty much everywhere).
Otherwise you can get cheap wire baskets from lots of places
Thanks heaps, glad you like the videos!
how did you fit a 1 1/8 inch headset in that steer tube? Came with a threaded headset originally no?
I figure it came with an 1â " threaded steerer tube, so no issue with swapping it out for an identically-sized ahead set
what bars did you start.with with the brace ? ive got a 1993 hardrock and i wanna jazz it up.,max Liverpool England đœ
How do you use those bars without the knurling to suit the bmx clamp?
Most bmx stems have knurling in them, never had the bars slip đ€·ââïžđ€
Looking for handlebars like yours, do you know where you got them or maybe what they are called? Thanks! Awesome awesome build by the way, almost egsactly what I want to build hahah.
Nice build! Is it an optical illusion or is there a pretty nasty hop in that wheel at 18:00
I was just checking the comments if someone else had seen it.... đ
I'm doing something similar with my 99 Specialized HardRock but found that my 38t chain ring is hitting the frame when installed. What gives? Is your square taper bb just wider than my external BB?
Hey! Oo cool, yeah that would be about the only factor really (bb or crank spider being a bit wider)
@@toastyrides yeah thank you! I dumb and just realized my donor cranks and bb are road stuff and not mtb.
where did u get the rear bracket for disk brake?
hello, what did you use to solder the frame?
What was the BCD on your chainring?
Great bike!! What type of fork is that?
Thank you!! The parts list is in the description, itâs off a Cannondale đ€
you need to put this on r/xbiking!
I donât have a ToastyRides account there, I mainly stick to Instagram and CZcams đ€
Hi, is it that easy to convert a 1ââ headset to a threadless 1ââ 1/8 one? No issue with the compatibility? Cheers from Switzerland ;)
Hi! It was 1 1/8â threaded so the conversion was easy. If you have a 1â headtube then youâll need a threadless 1inch fork.
But yeah there are plenty of headsets available for different frames, mine was a pretty common size. đ
You can easily get an threadless adapter that allows 1 1/8" stems to connect to 1" threaded headsets
Tight ride build man! I'm wanting something like this. Is that 27.5 up front and 26 in back ? What rims did you go with ? Cheers
@@deryckescott80 cheers mate! Yeah itâs a 27.5/26â mullet sort of bike haha. Halo Vapour front, the rear is a stock wheel off an early 2000âs Specialized S-works Enduro (I think itâs a sun rim).
Woah, that's a steep price. Still a nice bike thogh.
Not sure if I missed it - What size is this hardrock? And how tall are you?
The rear wheel is r26 "and the front 27.5" ??
Correct đ like a mullet bike! 2650b đ
did you used an oversize fork or standard?
just saw it, u used standard, my bad
Why didn't you have the disc tabs welded onto the original steel fork?
Because it's nearly impossible to strengthen a front fork intended for rim brakes only sufficiently for disc brake use. Your front brake is your life insurance, hence a smart move to get a proper disc brake compatible fork instead of messing with the stock one
Link for shifter?
is the handlebar motorcycle? what measure is it?
It is! Itâs about 800mm wide, 80mm rise from memory đ€ Iâll send measurements tomorrow with crossbar etc too
where can i get one of those forks?? what brand are those ??
Parts list in the description đ
I ride my bike with rear brakes only, getting ready to upgrade to hydraulic.
so you sprayed clear coat on top of wd40?
hi man, may i know the frame size of this bike?
That rear wheel does have a slight egg
Just need some bacon now đ€€

Iâm searching for a 17â-20â, 1997-2001 Stumpjumper M2 or an S-works frame if anyone has one or a lead on one please let me know. My rockhopper frame just started to get hairline cracks so unfortunately need to replace it, figured Iâd see if I can get lucky and find a stumpy or Sworks. Even if youâre reading this in a few years from now, Iâll always be interested. Just drop a reply comment and Iâll see it in my notifications and get back to you. Thanks! Love the retro MTB community- you all are great!
Hey mate, good luck with the search! If youâre in Nz then send me a DM on Instagram, a mate might still (Iâll have to check) have an M2 Stumpy for ya đ€
If plastic fenders are too heavy thenfrisbee golf is better sport
đ€š
YOU BURNED A NICE PAINT JOB OFF?
No, the frame builder burnt the paint when adding braze-ons and I wanted to keep it that way because I love the look đ„â€ïž especially how the decals look like toasted marshmallows đ€€
Sram disc brakes ? Might have been better to stick with rim brakes :')
đ they have been good so far, so maybe theyâre Shimano with Sram labels đ€Łđ
@@toastyrides ahah, some are goods and some are going straight to recall, idk sram mtb brakes are weird, like shimano road disc calipers, probably poor quality check !
@@Zeben84 itâs the Sram curse! Haha who knows what caused it, they have the same issue with derailleurs too!
@@toastyrides yeah i know, atleast they are great and quick with warranty, which shimano isn't anymore
Please tell me the model of chainring
Itâs by Stridsland Journal (you can Google for his website, or see him on Instagram) đ€
@@toastyrides tks you!
@@vanluanva no problem! đ€
you like chocotaco đ
What stem is that? It's a BMX stem right?
Hey, yeah it is! It works directly with the Moto bar which are 7/8â (22.2mm) diameter đ
@@toastyrides hey Iâm sorry. Hoping you can get back to me quick. I want to buy this year and model for $50.
Question is, why didnât you opt for shocks on the front?
@@snapbackhijab9801 oh cool! Sounds like a good deal đ
It was a rigid bike stock and I liked riding it with that setup.
Iâm not a fan of suspension, I adjust air pressure to cope with bumps.
Iâve had full suspension bikes before and now everything I own is rigid, just personal preference! Nothing wrong with it, just isnât for me right now đ€
I thought when u conerted an old bike to disks brakes it isnt actually deemed safe it was never design for all that forse on the forks
Hey, I used a disc fork for the conversion-itâs not the original fork.
Although Iâve seen frame builders convert forks to disc brakes, so Iâd say itâs ok as long as itâs not a crappy fork đ€đ€·ââïž
In 1999 -no bike
You need to buy your frame builder friend a decent grinder for Xmas, those welds are shocking!
Jeffson isnât a friend and they arenât âweldsâ (itâs brazed on) but heâs a world renown frame builder, he knows what heâs doing đ€
@@toastyrides If not welded, did "Jiff" braze the caliper mounts? I am looking for a weld or non-weld solution for caliper mounts.
@@bob-ny6kn yep itâs brazed on đ brazing setups are quite simple so can be done at home. Iâd love to learn someday!
Itâs basically a stronger solder, in a way, haha. Plus it looks beautiful with the brass brazing đ€€
You sounds like Elon musk.
What is your opinion on non disc vintage rebuilds. I keep finding myself wanting disc but itâs basically nonexistent without a more invasive fabrication to the frame.
Thoughts on just canti or v rim brakes?
Theyâre all great đ€ I have done a huge range of setups and this is just one of them, you can make cantis and vâs lock the rear just as you can with discs(especially with Koolstop brake pads!).
Just run what you can and have fun out there, cheers! đ âïž
@@toastyrides sounds good. I think I may just roll without discs. I love the look of these old bikes on some modern group sets
