    Cluckingham Palace is almost finished! In this video, I install an automatic drinking water system for the chickens. A sprinkler valve leads to a reservoir that holds a significant amount of water for the chickens. Pipes from the reservoir lead to drinking cups that the chickens will use to access the water. From there. the water leads back up to a sprinkler valve that ejects excess water when the valve is turned on. This allows the entire system to periodically flush out and keep clean water in the pipes. Only the best for my chickens. Enjoy!

    Just get an automatic bleeder valve for the top of the reservoir...
    It's a valve with a float in it so air goes out, but water closes the valve.

      @benjaminlemmens7726 Před 3 lety +1

      My first thought as well.
      However, they do tend to get stuck and leak water or not leak air anymore (at least when being under constant 1,5bar pressure in a household installation).
      I'm not too familiar with californian winter, but freezing would make the whole system a bit susceptible I think.

    • @StefanRotenberg
      @StefanRotenberg Před 3 lety

      @@benjaminlemmens7726 It will not be under constant pressure though, will it? My understanding is he just has to turn the water on for a few minutes every week or something like that, just enough to fill the reservoir.

    I am going to assume that you do not know alot about chickens so i will just let you know that that pipe will not work. The chickens will try and use it as a roost and will end up breaking it at some point since it is just PVC. Would have worked better if the one inch pipe had been run on the outside of the mesh and you had found some tubing to run from the pipe on the outside to the cups on the inside through the mesh.

    I've had my new flock or chicks for only two weeks now but I'll have to come up with a plan for the water issue once they are old enough to move into the coop. Before, when I had plenty of help, we had a feeder and water just hanging from the roof and we'd all take turns refilling. Now that all my boys are grown up and it's just me, there is no way I'd be able to keep up with as hot as it gets here in So Cal and now much they drink. Thanks for this video, I'll take inspiration from it to come up with some solution to help me out. Take care and have a good one :D

    I don’t know why you need a reservoir. Why not use a horizontal reservoir? Run it along the bottom of the chicken coop? With the reservoir horizontally under the coop, piping needs to get down low enough for the cups, about ground level. ( the higher the reservoir the warmer the water.

    • @3downtroy

      I’m assuming the valve is connected to the water sprinkler system, so that valve is only active when the yard is being watered.

      @RyanGrenz Před 3 lety +1

      @@3downtroy The area with all of the valves and “zones”, can be turned on individually like he shows. But I’m thinking he could have just kept the chicken coop zone on and there’d be a constant pressure of water so there would be no need to have a reservoir.

    • @2pantheraleoatrox
      @2pantheraleoatrox Před 3 lety +2

      I'm assuming that the reservoir is in case of a power outage. With the reservoir, he essentially has a built-in backup gravity-fed system.
      Though if that's the case, he needs a much bigger reservoir. Chickens drink a LOT, that size reservoir will only last a day or 2, depending on how many chickens he has.

    • @RyanGrenz
      @RyanGrenz Před 3 lety +1

      @@2pantheraleoatrox Could very well be a backup.. Hopefully he’ll address it! It’s driving me nuts not knowing haha
      Scratch that. In his description it mentions why, he wants fresh water through the pipes at all times. If he didn’t have a reservoir or a bleeder valve, the water would sit for “too” long

    • @BenTardif
      @BenTardif  Před 3 lety +1

      The drinker cups are meant to work under a low pressure. Full street water pressure would be too much for them on a constant basis. The sprinkler valve for the water system is set to turn on once a day for 1 minute to refill the reservoir and flush out part of it. This keeps the water fresh for the chickens. The size of the reservoir is significant and would be able to sustain the chickens for quite a while.

      I kept my neighbors happy by sharing the eggs with them, and when I had a garden, also sharing the harvest. MOST importantly, keeping the coop clean. From their side of the wall, they would never know - other than when they lay their eggs and the "girls" serenade :) :) :) Thank God, I never had a problem.

    I don't get it, what are the sprinklers on the roof for?

    • @3downtroy
      @3downtroy Před 3 lety +2

      Venting of air and water when the system is activated. It looks like the system is only activated when the yard sprinklers are on, which run usually for 10 minutes. That’s a lot of pressure on those pipes and cup valves if there was no way to vent the pressure.

    • @BenTardif
      @BenTardif  Před 3 lety +2

      Sprinklers vent air and excess water. The valve is set to turn on once a day for 1 minute. This flushes out part of the water to keep it fresh for the chickens.

    Iv been watching your videos quite a lot, and I love what you build but sometimes it's too much, I know you might love your animals, but seriously you are wasting too much money on just building a chicken coop. It's unnecessary. Instead giving it to the poor who needs the most would be better.
