@@daytimelantern6570 I believe that you should have more empathy and understanding about what is the agony in which an addict live is. I have a 30 year old cousin who almost died of an overdose from using crack. when he was not on the drug, I asked him what made him have that miserable life and he always answered that it was to forget the pain he felt. His father left the family when he was a little boy and never recovered from the trauma. He grew up on the streets, left school and found comfort in drugs. This is not the best option one can live, but it is necessary to us to understand that each one deals with pain in different ways. For that experience I understand Layne.

This song written by Layne reflects pure honesty of the pain when there is an abusive relationship between the mind and body. It helps those who struggle know they are not alone. Layne suffered with substance abuse. I battle anorexia. The specifics of the battle may be a different method, but the theme is the same...escape and hiding from oneself through self-destruction. I believe Layne had trouble dealing with a religious upbringing and the realities of living life. He makes references to only wanting to play and get on your knees time to pray. He also says it's the weight of my heart not the size making a reference to a person's heart being weighed against a feather to determine their afterlife. There is no greater despair than to have been made to believe you are irredeemable. It doesn't remove your belief it removes your hope. He is looking at his reflection and is destroyed by what he sees but a sinking ship cannot right itself.

A timeless, unique classic. AIC wasn't exactly mainstream, yet many of their biggest songs were commercial enough to have crossover appeal. "Man In The Box", "Them Bones", "Would", "No Excuses", and so on. But not this song. This song is for the misfits. The outsiders. The music nerds. The ones most people didn't understand. "Angry Chair" is a masterpiece.

This song is so extreme in every way. The riffs, the lyrics, the stop and start rhythms, the darkness, the contrast of the darkness with the pseudo-light nihilist surrender of the chorus. It takes so much creativity and serious balls to write something like that and perform it with so much confidence, to say "I'm going to do something so weird and different but it will kick ass". Wish he was still here with us.

    • @kilerf8053
      @kilerf8053 Před 9 měsíci +3

I think the chorus is so "light" because it's about real relief coming from acceptance of his state, albeit the "I-I-I" reminds you that it doesn't mean he's free from it, it's kinda like relief of acceptance that you will die soon of some disease - you still have to die. Quite remarkable how something so simple/easy to play can be so original, complex, nuanced and good. I can't get enough, something beautiful about, something that inspires me instead of depressing.
It's raw, real, not overly poetic (to the point you can't really relate). My favourite grunge song probably.

    [Verse 1]
    Sitting on an angry chair
Angry walls that steal the air
Stomach hurts and I don't care
What do I see across the way, hey
See myself molded in clay, oh
Stares at me, yeah I'm afraid, hey
Changing the shape of his face, aw yeah
    [Verse 2]
Candles red I have a pair
    Shadows dancing everywhere
    Burning on the angry chair
Little boy made a mistake, hey
Pink cloud has now turned to gray, oh
All that I want is to play, hey
Get on your knees, time to pray, oh
    [Chorus]
    I don't mind, yeah, I don't mind, I-I-I
    I don't mind, yeah, I don't mind, I-I-I
Lost my mind, yeah, but I don't mind, I-I-I
    Can't find it anywhere, I don't mind
    [Verse 3]
    Corporate prison, we stay, hey
I'm a dull boy, work all day, oh
So I'm strung out anyway, hey
    [Guitar Solo]
    [Verse 4]
    Loneliness is not a phase
Field of pain is where I graze
    Serenity is far away
Saw my reflection and cried, hey
So little hope that I died, oh
Feed me your lies, open wide, hey
Weight of my heart, not the size, oh
    [Chorus]
    I don't mind, yeah, I don't mind, I-I-I
    I don't mind, yeah, I don't mind, I-I-I
Lost my mind, yeah, but I don't mind, I-I-I

I actually just found out that Jerry gets the songwriting credit for the music, but most of the lyrics were written by Layne. Then there are songs like this where Payne wrote all of it and Rooster and Down in a Whole whereJerry wrore everything including the lyrics. I'm not sure exactly how accurate the information is, but that is what I read. I love Alice in Chains and at the end of the day it doesn't really matter from my point of view who wrote them.

AiC has always been a hard rock/metal band as Jerry Cantrell says.

i have been a classically trained harpist and pianist from the age of four years old. I wasn't into this kind of music or anything, however being just enchanted by the music of Alice In Chains as well as the Smashing Pumpkins, I told my parents in 1992 that I just had to go see them as my first concert when they came through my town. I was in second grade, ten years old, and my parents made me go with a babysitter, but he was like 16 or 17 and loved the bands so he didn't mind. I kept asking him, "why are so many people lighting rubber bands or something on fire!?" I learned a year or two later what i was actually smelling. Anyway, people my age were totally oblivious to being able to relate to my experience so it all just stayed bottled up just how incredible it was to see them. They all would just ask why I liked such hard and angry music. To me, and I absolutely stand by it to this day, I feel that music itself peaked for a whopping 350 years, give or take. From the 1600s to the 1999s, I feel that music composition was at its peak. People don't understand the very pronounced differences between baroque music and classical music, classical music and romantic music, romantic and contemporary...most people would simply call that entire span of compositions classical, even though it is far from. So this majority of people would think me insane to hear that I consider those periods greatly differing from one to another while at the same time, I feel that modern music, yes even Alice in Chains and Pumpkins, is very similar to the other periods of music. These people are simply the master composers of our time. Do I believe that Layne and Jerry are up to the level of Beethoven or Chopin!? You bet your ass I do. In fact, their ability to tweak and arrange chords, melodies, harmonies, and the like to achieve mood altering sounds is unbelievable. It is quite advanced too, something which I dunno...must come naturally because even after being trained for several years in composition, I couldn't write a single decent line of music to save my life. So yea, these are the Mozarts of our time and I stand by that. Is all music such? Heavens no...but you can definitely pull out the masters if you know what you're looking for.
Tell you what though, I would have never thought in that moment in second grade I was listening to some of the greatest composers of all time. But I see what drew me to it now. I ended up seeing AIC once more with Layne and three times with the new guy and I saw pumpkins another fifteen or twenty times. Just under four hundred concerts in my lifetime. I've seen all the greats though. I only wish I could have had a cell phone back in those days. Not outside of the concerts, heck no...phones and the Internet have simply destroyed society, civilization, common courtesy, privacy, etc. But holy cow, to have been able to take those memories and shows with me...and today, just about all of the greats are dead. We still got Ms. Stephanie Nicks, Mrs. Dolly Parton, and a few other major irreplaceable people who gave so much to music. But mark my words, it is over and we won't be seeing anything like the greats ever again. After 2000 music became a money making fad creating joke. Musical theory is a total mystery to those making "music" now and given how the Internet works, I don't see music surviving beyond another ten years. It will only be noise and vulgarity to please a low functioning crowd of simpletons.
