      Not to mention there’s significantly more threads per inch on a bolt than on a wood screw. What that means, since it’s the threads that hold it together, is significantly less surface area and holding power. That honestly might be the biggest reason it’s so long.

      @@JustB904 “this nut has been tapped for wood threads.” Last I checked regular nuts and bolts don’t use wood threads. They have significantly more thread per inch than a wood screw. Because that’s what this lag bolt is, a really big wood screw. Those bolts are supposed to use the wood to hold it not a bolt hence the wood threads. And I have snapped them before so idk what you’re on about.
      Why is the nut so big then? Why can’t it accomplish the same job as a bolt while using the same amount of space?
      Let me ask you this. Would you use this to fasten two metal pieces provided they met the length requirements for the bolt and fastener? If not why would the lag bolt suddenly be unsafe? The wood threads aren’t holding because the wood it’s the nut that’s holding onto them. So the material your fastening really shouldn’t matter that much.

    Professionals aren’t going to spend the money on it when a bolt and nut is cheap, and a diy person is only going to do a small small project. Both ways it’s more cost effective to buy nuts and bolts. That’s not even half the size of a lag bolt anyways.

    I gotta tell ya- I don’t see where this is better than a nut and bolt- and it worries me about the thread strength and longevity of this application

      @OldsmobileCutlass1969Va Před měsícem +1

      Saves time and cost! This bolt is cheaper and faster to install (no pre-drill) because it's a 1/4"-5/16" shank with a drill bit on the end.

      @@OldsmobileCutlass1969Va is a cheaper bolt something we’re looking for during this application? These are crucial joints- load bearing, structural points. I’ve never had a bolt fail in any construction project that ‘I’ve ‘ done- and there hasn’t been THAT many…but I know there woulda been some pretty disastrous results if one did… is there any data on a failure rate or anything?

      @@OldsmobileCutlass1969Va about the only advantage I can see is that you don’t have to pre-drill a hole- as you mentioned- but your demonstration uses a pre.-drilled hole. Let’s see it actually without using a pre-drilled hole.

    Or I could take the proper bolt. And put the correct washer on there. And I don't have to worry about splitting the wood. I live in the desert.You don't want to be doing none of that in 2 years.That would be dried out and cracked and falling apart.
