ICON Success Story: Rob Pichette – 890 SF Deck Surface With Outdoor Kitchen & Living Area
The ICON ScrewJoist is a new deck framing system that combines the strength of steel with the workability of wood. Top builders like Rob Pichette are making the switch to the ICON System.
Rob Pichette is the owner of Deck Experts LLC, and has been building high-end custom decks in Connecticut for over 30 years. Rob doesn’t do traditional- he uses cutting-edge materials and techniques, providing the very best outdoor living spaces on every project.
Rob was one of the first builders to try the ICON ScrewJoist System, using it as the framing for one of his most ambitious projects yet - an 890 square foot deck in Glastonbury, CT., complete with an outdoor kitchen, granite countertops, a 16 x 18-foot pavilion roof, bench seating, bench storage, and a full stone fireplace.

You're nuts if you dont pre drill
Will this fix the deck on my lawn mower ?
not the best way top build treads at all.
Where can you buy it?
What kind of glue would a guy use to bond those mitred ends together? Not to the stringers, just board to board.
That dewalt saw sounds like its on 200' of 14-2 extension cord
First time seeing them need to try it on a project
The only tool you need to drill a hole is a drill, too. Then you can just throw a bolt in the hole and put a nut on it. Way cheaper.
People will only use this if it's cheaper. But it's not.
thats why you make the customer eat the price
@@williamcates7122 how's that working for ya?
Such an awesome idea. I want to can has!
Too expensive. I can buy a 6" anchor bolt with a nut and washer for $1.45, then buy a second washer for $.25. put the 2nd washer on the bet side and tighten like normal. Beat that price
Why would one need to put a fastener on a screw?
Is that an accessory for a drill, a screw gun, or both?
PAMFast comes fully assembled with the motor attached.
Cool fastener no doubt, but just remember before you switch out your bolts - you are now downgrading to a SCREW instead of a BOLT. They still have their place tho.
Wait, but you still pre drill, and this’ll cost how much more than just a bolt, washer and nut?
Plus it's made of magnesium aluminum metal... not STEEL
@@BOBHLDRMN steel will rust faster
@LPvi1 ... you mean drive in faster.. ??
They’re just using the same hole for demonstration purposes, otherwise you’d have to bring in a ton of extra 4x4s. Also, the point of this product, and most new products at tool shows, is for industrial applications, not your average Joe or the contractor who does this work occasionally. If you needed to install 1,000 of these for a project, the ease and speed of installation may offset the price increase.
So if you use these, you’re left with these hideous fugly nuts showing.
I guess it is a little quicker than bolts and nuts but a bigger pain to remove
Looks like ass too.
Yeah you are definitely that guy wasting people's time !
Without the need to pre drill? You went through a predrilled hole 😂
They are probably using the same piece of wood to do demonstrations. Looks like they are at some sort of tool show
@@Jaredman they should use the tool as advertised not in a different application thats way easier.
@@grahamclarke846A pre-drilled hole is absolutely not impacting the viability of this tool, stop it. Some of y’all just wanna find the flaw in everything you go so far as to just comment pedantic ass bullshit.
@@TheHeadincharge Why would they say something as important as, "Use this thing without having to pre drill holes!" Only to drive it through a prefilled board..? That's just stupid. The thing sucks. It's like 3 times the price of a normal carriage bolt. Why the fvck would I buy this over anything else? Because it drills it's own hole? Never seen a video of it doing what it's advertised to do. That's a huge redflag.
This would be handy for rails and steps. Ill use brackets everywhere else
That’s strapping. Firring strips go on the studs to make them plumb
Fastenmaster is awesome
What a waste of time.
Can this be used in place of Simpson strong tie screw?
Because 2x4s cost too much 🥸
Do you do one install on each side or do you do one install every 3 ft up the truss?
After twenty Year When all Tha jobs a I made are ruin. Hahahaha I never use it Or recommended F#$$# Every body.
The Ryan Gosling lookalike in carpentry 😂
Waste of time
What is the dry time on this? How well does it adhere to really wet treated lumber? Thanks!
20 minutes to dry, 24 hours for a full cure! We do not recommend applying in the rain.
Yeeeeaaaaah…buuuut will it last? That’s the real question…
How on earth would this be quicker
Both are fine for sure👍 but I really doubt I’d need double the time to use tape. I’m sure the total time would be pretty close to equal. Idk which would be cheaper, but I doubt there’s much difference there either way. All things considered I’d chose tape first. Just easier.
Give it a try and see for yourself which is easier!
$110 a gallon for flex seal
Take is better.
What's the point of installing 25 year warranty composite material but your joists are not protected with flashing tape and will fail first?
Which brand are your chisels?
This design will fail far easier than traditional designs as sheer failures are far greater risk.
Without knowing the price of these things it’s impossible to evaluate the product. Until the budget comes into play, I too could prefab parts and speed the installation process up. But very few customers care about a few extra days for installation, so the only wiggle room is reducing labor costs. Labor costs are a significant factor, but again, how much do these highly processed pieces cost to get?
Can I just buy my own dewalt screwgun and attach a pamfast to it? There's a dewalt XR drywall gun on sale and I need a pamfast for my fence I'm building
The motor and PAMFast extension are specially connected. If you'd like to connect with a FastenMaster rep, they will be able to help you get your hands on PAMFast! www.fastenmaster.com/support/request-job-site-visit?product=654
When cutting the tenon, instead of doing several cross cuts with the circular saw and then chiselling, could you just use a hand saw for the two cuts, eliminating the need to chisel?
@fastenmasterpro can't find it anywhere. I need this and at least need to know a price
Why doesn’t my kit include the counterbore bit?
The counterbore kit is only included on Cortex for Fascia. If you have Cortex for Decking, then you do not need the counterbore kit.
yeah, for a doghouse
Does the screen bend? That's the real question. Also this does not look at all faster then a framing gun.
I work for a deck company in Michigan and we don't use any of that crap, let's go!
