  • Here is a first hand example and RANT about how easy it is to set up a real HiFi rig exploring Craigslist. Finding used HiFi deals online.
    Friendly disclaimer: There are plenty of "Schiiit"words near the end, and I keep using "Klipsch from Best Buy" as my reference for crappy audio. I own Klipsch , I'm talking about any of the plastic type speakers, so relax about the name I chose to use.. I simply mean "commoditized high volume audio stuffs".

    Fantastic deals on used gear. I should have went that route but I bought new gear instead. Now that I know more. I could buy a system that rivals mine for a third of the price! Keep it up hi fi guy!

    You missed the La Scalas when you were scrolling down the Klipsch page. Probably because the thumbnail was shitty. I’ve found some of the best deals looking for non specific listings that most people gloss over. For example, my current speakers are Klipsch Chorus II’s in walnut, mint condition. Were listed as, “Klipsch Speakers.” for 300 bones! Had to do a double take and sure enough they were the real deal! They sound killer, similar to your forte II’s but with a 15in driver and passive. Awesome vid btw, love your enthusiasm!

    Jolidas are nice, I have one. Got it during the 50% off sale they had many years ago. Dude, how many cups of coffee did you have before you shot this vid., lol!
    Infinity Emits, got to go with those. Very nice. Lots of Craigslist Hi-enders, tend to OVERVALUE their used gear. And, many don't like coming down from what they think is
    more than fair! You have to be careful with these guys!
    Have to agree about that Pioneer. I also have an old SX-3900 Pioneer. 45lbs, 120 watts x 2. A nice vintage piece. Even better. I got this on CL from a collector for $180. Needed some minor servicing after a few years. Nothing to pricey. Back in service!
    Haflers? Nice WARM, POWERFUL, MUSICAL SOUND!

    You may have already received replies on some of the mystery gear. Here's a few that you showed.
    Starting with the Bose 401's. Total trash. Not even the cabinet is worth saving. They had a couple of 6.5 inch, whizzer cone, low end car speaker quality, low excursion. paper cone woofers. Just junk. You could go out and buy a couple of Polk Audio T50's (bottom of the rung floor standing speakers), and kick their butt.
    Next. The rectangular cabinets with the 8 inch, yellow dust cap woofers with paper cone tweeters, were a Radio Shack model. They experimented with acoustic suspension speakers with nicer looking but inexpensive cabinets. A bit of upper mid base boom, with a slight amount of sizzle coming out of the paper cone. Low rent, low fi speakers that might have had wife acceptance factor 40 or 50 years ago.
    Perhaps I may sound a little bold here, but many years ago, I ran my own electronics repair business. I bought and sold equipment. I occasionally built my own just to show to audio snobs that I could create an amplifier or pair of speakers that was not nearly as costly in comparison but I usually had created better sounding stuff.
    As far as audio equipment, if you're just going to buy for yourself, and not try to trade upwards when the budget permits, then you can accept paying 75% of the original retail price. I don't care what the nameplate says, you're always going to lose money that way with rare exceptions. Since the value of the dollar has decreased, you may think, I'm only paying $175, but this is equivalent cost of $300 back in the day. Good quality stuff cost you quite a bit even back then.
    As an example, if ever you come across McIntosh audio equipment in working order, or at least doesn't look mistreated, and they're not charging retail, buy it. You don't have to be a fan. You bought the equivalent of a gold bar. It's almost always going to go up in value.
    Any kit, no matter if it had a sterling reputation, let's just use Dynaco as an example, has little street value because you can't be sure the person building it knew what they were doing. The exception that comes to mind, modifications by Sutherland, or Audio by VanAlstine (AVA) modification, Vacuum Tube Audio, and Curico. The last two, if you can buy, came from working original donor Dynaco ST70's. Those are almost as rare as Unicorns for trade. Buy those without hesitancy.
    Any older amplifier gear, 20 or more years old, has been technologically passed by newer better, even inexpensive, if you select the right gear. Sorry, but technology marches on. Tube amplifier designs worth their salt, correct their bias settings dynamically.
    This means as the tubes age over 6 months to a year, perhaps two or three if you're lucky, won't change so much, that the bias won't correct for change. I used to work on higher end equipment, and if the tubes were still good, the bias still needed adjusting in shop to preserve the correct bandwidth, distortion and frequency response.
    The Pioneer as well as most of the silver and gold panel gear from the 70's and 80's was generally good, and it resells well if in good condition. If you have original packing box and manual, the value goes up. All of that gear, Pioneer, Sony, Altec, Advent, Kenwood, Marantz, Sansui, etc. had its own signature sound. The Marantz sound like the McIntosh sound of that era, warmed things up a bit. People would call it smooth, or lush. That's because they kept the distortion down, the noise floor low for that era, but they did tilt the frequency response to what they knew would sell. It took many years later to have revealing speakers. When you compare a modern good amplifier to those well built, well respected brands, the modern, dare I even say, some class D equipment would eat their lunch. Uf you want better dynamics, far lower noise floor, and neutral frequency response, then buy newer equipment. You can get caught up with nostalgia, but keep in mind, you can achieve better with a new $500 amplifier, vs. the $900 silver or gold age receiver. They do hold their value if well cared for, but there's a gap in performance between new and old.
    Finally, I know this is long, but when buying used equipment, don't pay over 40% of retail if you ever want to sell it and not take a bath. Think of it as an enjoyable hobby that you can afford, but only if you find people willing to do a deal. You identified some nice equipment and gave a reccomendation, but so far, all I see is over priced, label buying, with no thought to how can I resell this and not get scrubbbed?
    I just noticed, you passed by Magnepan speakers. Those are incredible speakers. Some of the most revealing and beautiful sounding speakers you could own. Get them at the right price add a SVS or Rel Acoustics subwoofer, then you have selected true audiophile quality speakers. There's nothing you have shown that will have the pin point accuracy Maggies have.

    Man, in my early days of hunting for my hi-fi pieces, I GOT LUCKY! I scored a McIntosh MC2205 for $800, and was looking at Von Schweikert$3600, and PSB Gold i's-$2800, I was leaning toward the PSB's. I went to the dealer, and a UPS guy had just dropped a brand new Gold i onto the cement, and dinged it up, just a few dents on one speaker. I got them for $1200, otherwise I think he quoted me $2600 for the new, in box Gold's. Unbelievable. This is back in early 2000, but you can pick up (not really, they weigh 90lb's each) the PSB's for cheap on the net, one pair as I write for $525 or $750-best offer. Awesome speaker. Awesome amp as well, but they are now going for over 2 grand, still a great amp at that price, if you get a good one. I know OCD guy poo poo's McIntosh, but this amp is beyond that, It's a fantastic amp, I would buy from a dealer unless a great deal comes along.
    OCD High-Fi Guy, why don't you look up equipment for sale by name, stuff you know to be great? I know from experience, the above are great, especially the PSB's at well under $1000.
    Bose NEVER! sounded good. lol

      Hey Tom, this was in response to people saying they could not afford HiFi, so I offered them a way to do it . A solution on other words. Nothing wrong with McIntosh, if its the older gear. The new stuff is nothing special in my opinion. IO buy late model gear, I dont buy the old used stuff any longer, but it is how I started... Cheers !

    • @TOM-C.
      @TOM-C. Před 4 lety

      I understand, but you could be more specific, and type in names of equipment, and model numbers you know from personal experience, are great. You must have a wealth of knowledge dating back at least 15-20 years, type in the old names like I did on the PSB Stratus Gold i's, that is one unbelievable speaker for $500-$700, and they are readily available.
      I should clarify what equipment I used, The McIntosh MC2205 (A VERY POTENT AMP!), and an Audible Illusion's M3a tube preamp (I paid $2000 new, now $1200-1400 used). Both of these may have a lot to do with the sound quality I achieved from the PSB's, but they are currently quite expensive on the used market.

  • @rolando_j_

    The best reason to start with used gear is because if the gear is maintained and in working order years later, you will be able to sell them for what you paid for them. Basically what you've paid for your gear is more or less a fully refundable deposit. Where this all falls apart is if you ever have to have the gear repaired because you'll lose that cost. So you should look for exceptionial cared for gear. Best if the sell has had it recently had them serviced because this is money you won't spend for maintaining them.
    Why is this the best reason? Well, in the long term you're building that end game system. All of what you're paying today will be reinvested in a much better system. It's not really about getting a really good deal. It's about not wasting money on your journey through buying audio gear during your lifetime.

    • @OCDHIFiGuy
      @OCDHIFiGuy  Před 19 hodinami

      Good point. Ill argue the other side. Buying used you are limited to whats for sale used, in perfect condition, just serviced. Thats a very small percent of whats out there. So if you want to bother with only buying what's available with that criteria. Then great. Most of my customers dont need to "save" by buying used. they just need a seller that finds the value products that kick serious ass and have a reasonable cost.. Reasonable for us is $20K.. per piece usually..

      @@OCDHIFiGuy I had new Zenith Circle of Sound speakers. Only just ok speakers. My dad sold Zenith in his store. We only had one, very very expensive turntable in a cabinet with 2 speakers that had 8 drivers in each speaker, which was 16 total drivers. I could just touch this button, like touching a smart phone, touch the button for the subs to kick in. Very Very powerful, the turntable looked expensive, all Zenith turntables had a diamond needle. I dont know of how turntables back then compare to today, but I think stereo then didnt compare as good today. But we didnt have Fischer tube amps, or that great electrostatic speakers in our store. Zenith gave us piles of records for free, records of others doing Beatles covers, & others covers, that were really great sounding. The first really great speakers I heard were Vandersteens. The Beatles destroyed country music artists like Loretta Lynn during the sixties, except for Johnny Cash. It is strange that Music Direct today only carries Johnny Cash & Willie Nelson country music. My sister said back then that people that wasnt good enough for rock music, had to settle for country music. Everyone I knew had a Santana Abraxas record. But high-end stereo wasnt as great in the US as it was in & around Europe. It's the same way today, most Americans are ignorant. Listening to records died down for most people after the Beatles, but not everybody. There were a few more local bands back then, there was nothing else to do.

      Hey Matt, its not that its a bad product at all. I simply dont resonate with the brand. There are several popular brands that I just dont vibe with. It has to do with Aesthetic, the way they describe their designs in the marketing material, and just personal intuition. PS Audio sort of stands for mediocrity which is fine, as within that there is balance. I tend to like the diminishing returns area of the market. so its a personal thing.. Looks like they are making an attempt at striving for excellence with the Bascomb King line , which shows that even they understood they had no "high line" , so they made one, but people appreciate PS for value before anything Id say, so no telling how the high line will work.. Furthermore the message is strong enough to warrant me cleaning my ass up a little but and looking showered shaven and with a hair cut.. The core peeps are cool with me being scrubby and real but if I really respect and feel that my message is important I must respect the recipient of the message a little but more than hanging out with mikey freak in his underwear . I do this so much I forget how uptight people get about cables and I'm about to run a campaign that gets super real with the marketplace and I want people to listen to me. Therefore anything I can do to kill immediate judgement I will do to get my message across, as its that important to me. I stand for change and Im about to lead it. so Ive got to step my game up for primetime.

Even Canadians bitch about what it costs them for anything 'Made in USA' and when I've asked them why they dont just get on a plane and get what they want, apparently the Canadian tax man is very keen on speaking to anyone who shows that kind of initiative. That said, when I've sold gear online I've had a much better experience overall with American buyers than my fellow (cheap charlie lowballer shitheads) Australians. When I sell something for 60-70% of what I paid for it 3 months (!) earlier, I make it clear that I don't want to hear from tyre kickers but that doesn't stop them. Hey Mike let me know if you find a 1meter pair of pure silver verastarr rca interconnects used for $500. I almost scored them on audiogon but they were sold to someone who had a little more money than me. Those are way out of my reach but I took a shot. Maybe some day. I hear there amazing for tube pre to to tube power amp. In the mean time the dream continues!

      Seriously, someone will not put something out that looks jacked up unless they can shut people up with performance. Looks can be deceiving. I happened to find out someone I know in the industry knew EXACTLY what those speakers were as he had first hand experience listening to them and he said they look better than they sound.. This is definitely not the direction to go in. All the drivers are obsolete, they are extremely heavy and they have 2 tweeters about 2 feet apart which does not work. Does not matter if they were 100K new. they will not do what I would want them to do anyways... so that guy is sitting on 2 huge boat anchors unfortunately.

    So an old silverface but not a ps audio dac? Ps audio makes killer dacs. Dude I like your videos but damn, can't wrap my mind around that one. The "old" watts thing is one of those audiophile myths. They arent doing anything better than any hifi class a/b gear today. Nothing. I guess instrongly disagree with that line of reasoning. But it's America so....f yeah

    • @OCDHIFiGuy
      @OCDHIFiGuy  Před 3 lety

      Hi Chris, first off old watts being underrated pertains to volume not sonic quality. The new ones use better parts that are far more reliable. I dont use vintage hifi at all, ever, I just find it interesting to look at .. On the next. PS makes a GOOD DAC , they do NOT make a GREAT DAC. my opinion of course, but I =eat shit and breathe whats best in audio, its my mission in life and I surpassed PS a long time ago . Decent DAC tho and many people own one ...

    • @OCDHIFiGuy
      @OCDHIFiGuy  Před 4 lety

      Hi David, theres no good reason. Its personal taste is all. some brands just like some car makers I simply do not vibe with. The fact is PS audio is not top of game nor top of market, they are smack dab in the middle. If you seek a product that is smack dab middle of ,market then PS is teriffic. My taste is upmarket, so in no way does it mean its not great gear, It just means not for me.

      Yeah, and also do your homework. Those 55K speakers for $2800 turned out to be a mediocre design at best. There was one huge design flaw that I did not realize. but it made sense when a professional speaker manufacturer pointed it out. You cant put 2 tweeters 2 feet apart and get imaging. not to mentionm , and I tried to hint at this ... all the drivers are discontinued and they can not be replaced, they must be reconed if there is a recone kit even avail.
