      Rob - I think there's a misunderstanding about discovery coins. You need to send them to Wexler or CONECA. They'll tell you if it's a new variety. Unless that variety goes into the Cherrypickers guide, PCGS and NGC won't put it on the slab. Anacs will accept the letter from Wexler or Coneca and will put 'discovery coin' on the slab, but NGC and PCGS won't even look at it before charging you.

      Those 'slabbing' clowns don't know what grading is! They use XF, when it should be EF - there is NO such grade as XF, I own a 'Little Red Book of U.S coins by R.S.Yeoman', and they use grade EF! This grade is Extremely Fine - there is NO such grade called Extra Fine! I'm British, and I see 'Mint State this, Mint State that' - what a load of rubbish. If a coin is Mint, then its correct grade is UNCIRCULATED. If a coin is Mint with Full Lustre, its correct grade is BRILLIANT UNCIRCULATED, it's as simple as that. A coin is either Mint, or it isn't. As for the people who CLEAN them...

      Yeah - it's really brilliant for sure. I know why they put it down as questionable but I never understood why coins can be guilty until proven innocent. If an EXPERT cannot determine that it has without a doubt been treated, altered, cleaned or polished, then in my opinion, it should receive a grade - or at the very least - a written explanation for why you could not determine it either way. I guess the reasoning being - "it's too nice" isn't something they can put on paper! LOL

    Rob,
    That extra bit on the H in Homestead is what machine doubling actually looks like on incuse lettering. The rest of that is original design, lighting, or die deterioration. Wexler and Wiles both have examples of machine doubling that looks like what you were concerned about, and they labeled it machine doubling. Valuable hub doubling on incuse letters decreases their size, and none are known for quarters. You have to look at the incuse lettering of certain 2013 and 2015 cent DDRs to see what it is supposed to look like. Also, PCGS won't label any variety, period, unless it's in the CPG. ANACS won't even label a variety unless Wexler verifies it.

    That 1883 DMPL is beautiful. I would break that IHP and send to NGC for sure. What a beauty. I do not confess to be an expert but from what I've learned and watching your video's, that penny looks authentic. Not sure on difference between NGC and PCGS, which one being more reputable, but I'd send to NGC and get a second opinion. The 5 step nickel was awesome! That war nickel was a beaut. I have a war nickel with some steps, but not having a good microscope, can't see all of the coin.

    The H on Homestead is incuse machine doubling, not a DDR. I left a long comment explaining how it works in your original video with that coin, though probably not reasonable to expect you to see all the comments :P
    For the non-CPG listed varieties, you should submit those to ANACS. PCGS won't attribute anything that they don't list on their website.

    • @mjanovec
      @mjanovec Před 3 lety +1

      Yeah, total waste of time and money sending coins to PCGS expecting attributions for varieties and errors they don't recognize. Even if the individual reviewer agrees with the attribution, they likely cannot apply it to the coin.

    The underlying ghost carbon spots are indicative of striping. Probably in the distant past to facilitate retoning. It didn't work. The carbon spots though faded can still be seen. Bummer. I love your show.

  • @youtubasoarus
    @youtubasoarus Před 3 lety +8

    The 1901 seems like it is brand new. That is probably why they rejected it, might be plated? I'm no expert but I can surmise they must have compared this coin to the ones they've had in for grading, and among the population they've recorded that coin may have toning not consistent with the others which may have lead to that issue of being ungradable. Again, one must think that the very best they've seen would have a consistent finish/toning from new -- and this being like-new would have to be consistent with that population. Again, if this coin was too bright it might raise suspicion. Either it is the best 1901 in existence, or it has been plated? Again, my mind is purely in speculation mode.
    Compare this to a newly minted coin, it looks similar but that is unlikely with over 100 years of oxidation unless it was stored in an air-tight container. Again another mark against it. Just trying to figure out the reasoning here, not making a judgment. I think it all comes down to plausibility and the odds this coin was stored perfectly for over 100 years and looks like this is just too unlikely, hence I think that might be what they're thinking too.
    On the plus side that CC morgan looks like it'll make up for all your troubles. Beautiful coin.

    I have a theory about that IHP.
    While I agree with what everyone else is saying, another possibility could be that the coin is in such outstanding condition that they are deliberately trying to get you to send it back for a regrade just to get more money from you. That's literally the only thing I can think of.
    I am absolutely appalled. There is absolutely NO WAY that coin COULDN'T have gotten a grade.
    Rob, I sincerely hope you can get a legitimate grade on that IHP. Believe me, we are all as bummed as you are. Good luck.

    Unfortunately, I've seen this a lot with conserved copper coins. They know the coin has been conserved because of the look and lack of toning (copper is very reactive), however proper conservation is allowed. Except with copper they are very picky -- they are even very picky in what copper they will conserve. So it is what it is. I suspect that NGC will say the same thing. You might have more luck with ANACS. Also, ANACS recognizes far more VAMs than PCGS or NGC, so better luck there as well. Cheers!
