3 Exercises to MASTER guitar TRIADS

- Want to add some triad exercises to your guitar practice? Not sure how to practice triads effectively? Well, you've come to the right place! Here are my three (four) best exercises to help you memorize your guitar triad shapes and become a triad master!
The triad practice begins here by learning the intervals of the major triad shape to help you better identify the different triad shapes. Keep the same static Root as you cycle through the four different triad forms - major triad - minor triad - diminished triad - (back to) major triad - augmented triad.
Your goal is to be able to easily do that from each triad shape (inversion) on each of the four different 3-string sets. I have my FREE PDF which will help you with this:

Exercise two is all about starting to use triads with a chord progression. You can use triads to play any chord progression, but we're using a 'one'-'two' progression in the major key to cover all shapes on a single string set.
Work the triad shapes in pairs until you're able to move through the progression freely up and down the strings. I have TABs and a backing track available on my Patreon page:

You'll probably need those tabs for triad exercise three...the chord scale (with a twist!). I learned this approach from Mick Goodrick's Almanac of Guitar Voice Leading. For this you're playing through the chords of the major key in order whilst moving down the fretboard towards the headstock. This'll really test you!

40 odd years ago (well 43 years but who's counting?) I saw Larry Carlton playing live & he was using triads too add umph & harmony too Smiles & Smiles Too Go. I went too my guitar at the end of this gig & it was a huge moment for me!!!!! Frank Gambale had just done Modes No More Mystery (he also had a good head of hair & no belly either!!) which opened many doors, but I couldn't make it click until seeing Larry Carlton using Triads!!!! I could drone a pedal tone (I used a keyboard too do this (Yamaha DX7 remember those!!!?) & then the world opened up & I was able too do more than any of my guitar friends & it also gave me extra powers too take many tunes & give them a third dimension as it were (The Shadows The Rise & Fall Of Flingle Bunt is a great tune for this!!!!!) & nobody else was doing it!!!!!!!

Wow. I only started a couple weeks ago to really learn my fretboard, and so was doing major triads using the circle of fifths on the string sets. I knew I had to add in scales next, and then minor, diminished and augmented. Merci beaucoup for this lesson. Two suggestions, it would be nice to learn the circle of fifths progression in each key; and to also learn the rule of the Octave.
I always wished I had black keys on my ukulele (tenor and baritone) but also, it isn't possible. So I did the next best thing. I took small postit notes and put strings on my piano. This helped me learn inversions.

These are great exercises, thanks. It might be easier or less confusing if the chart was in the same orientation as the videos below it.
I respect that opinion but I like them that way. I hate when instructors put the diagram in the same orientation as the teacher. Because I am playing it the opposite way, my guitar neck is to my left, so the diagram is the same.
Exactly what @frankm2588 said. It's orientated that way so it matches what you see as you look across the fretboard (assuming you're right-handed that is).
Well done. I appreciate that you took the basic triad shape, which there’s plenty of lessons on already, and you add to that the minor and augmented. Small addition with giant benefit. Liked n subd. Graphics were also a great help. I only wish the graphic had descending string sizes so I don’t have to first get that info sorted out in my head and hands lol up is down and down is up

yeah guys that is one of the key features in impro. To visualise chord shapes all over the fretboard and know how to split them, doing slide ups to some triade is nice and of course u will know where you can play the notes if you want to improvise to some music amd that is linked to CAGED. I would prefer to learn this concept before the CAGED sys. Im currently mastering it too:)
P.S. Im just curious why you start with Cmajor chord on string set 1 in your PDF and than you start with F#major chord in string set 2... could be confusing for someone who just started. But anyways thank you for your effort!

Excellent as always - one or two comments. I bet you will agree no one really cares about diminished or augmented. I realize it’s valid triads and you want the full info in the lesson. Joe pass said to me there are only three kinds of chords. Maj min and 7th. I realize a 7 th has a maj triad with flat 7. But I wonder if it would be worth your thinking about doing a video about those three only, somehow giving a 7th ‘triad’ of 1 3 flat7. Or something I dunno. Just an idea. You are the premier guitar instructor on CZcams.
I like to listen to and *attempt* to play some jazz stuff, diminished and minor7flat5 is all over the place in jazz. Haven't used too much augmented but I'm very appreciative that those were covered as lots tend to have that same mindset and exclude them....

I’m saying consider doing another one with maj min dom only. I hope that will be ok for you that I ask Ry to consider this and make this request. Sounds great! But how to play rock or metal with this triads???
There are LOADS of examples
1. Learn the intervals.
2. Learn the fretboard on the dots. Dots = street signs on fretboard.
3. Learn two chord switches:
I to V
ii to IV
vi to IV
The mind learns from context.

Little tipp: The argumented position for each string set is the same in every inversion.

Don't give up. It really is dirt simple. Spend a few hours reviewing the basics of music theory, chord construction, intervals. Tons of great sources online. Then repeat as necessary to get it engrained so you can recite a harmonization within the key of C major as shown on the video.
the only thing i confuse is that diminished and augmented were they came from 😅
Is the string section 2 and string section 3 the exact same shaped just on obviously the different strings?
String Set 3 and 4 have the same shapes. Sets 1 2 and 3 are all different.

I’m sorry if this is too stupid to ask, but when I move to string set two with exercise one it is definitely not the same pattern. Please help my idiocy.

I wish that he would tell you why they're useful and how to find these shapes and what key they're in easily without knowing each note name. Are there landmarks for the shapes to tell you what chord you're playing?

Goes without saying. That can be quite a daunting prospect though, so learning things like triad forms are a good entry point 🙏🏻
You mean all the notes on the fretboard?
@@terrius1432 No i mean the distances between the frets....so from whichever note you are fretting you have to know for example how many frets distance is a major third or a perfect fifth on the same strings on different strings etc etc etc...sure knowing the notes on the fretboard is a must too but lets just say you have to at least know all the natural notes(no sharps of flats) and go from there....
@terrius1432 No, basically just where you can put your fingers on the neck and it'll always work because you know the intervals work together.
Easier to remember than all the notes, especially because after a while you'll be able to remember the notes because of the intervals.
@@kagenotatsumaki You have to at least know where all the natural notes lie on the fretboard though...cause lets say you play the B minor 7 th apreggio or the B dorian or the B harmonic minor....you are right the intervals you have already learned ll work BUT if you cant instantly identify all the Bs in the neck instantly you dont have your starting point and if you are improvising that wont do....in another case if you are in the b minor and someone calls you to play the fourth then the interval is way faster than for you to calculate what is the fourth degree of the b minor scale(which is E) cause you see it physically and can construct the chord almost instantly even without knowing the note name....
So you may not need to identify ALL the seven notes of the scale you are playing by name but you still have to identify the root....so in essence you need to know your note locations at least till the 12th fret(they then repeat like a clock so you dont need to learn the other half anyway).
This would be infinitely easier if you had the picture the other way round to match with the guitar
As I said to other viewers it’s done this way so it matches what you see on the guitar. It’s the standard approach.
why would you have a fret board that is reversed from you? its confusing for beginners trying to flip it in their minds
I orientate it that way so it's what you see as you look across the fretboard. I'm assuming though that you're right-handed. It's the standard approach for horizontal fretboards.
I get it but...this is the way all guitar fretboard diagrams are drawn. It is meant to be what you see when you look down at your guitar in your lap. If anything, the video perspective should be switched to match the diagram

Practicing the major chord progression starting from any position does not quite sound musical but I think this is a perfect triad exercise. At least it’s the most helpful for me! Thx for sharing this!
