A Simple Way To Learn Triads On Guitar [By Shape & By Position]

- In this video, you learn all about triads on guitar, and how they will totally transform the way you play chords on the instrument.
Triads open up the fretboard to you as far as playing chords are concerned, and will provide you with much greater scope when playing rhythm guitar parts.
In this lesson, you learn the major and minor triads on the top 3 strings of the guitar. You will first learn each shape in isolation, before being shown 2 key ways to train triads so you know instantly where they are on the fretboard:
1. By Shape
First, you learn how to voice a chord progression with each triad shape, one at a time
2. By Position
Next, you learn how to voice a progression with a mix of triad shapes that allow you to stay in the same position on guitar
Both training methods combined will ensure you get the triad chord shapes down so you can easily use them in your own guitar playing.

Thank you, so much. I was taught wrongly and I believed in that concept.
@@vincentkasanga7321 you are very welcome :)
Thankyouforguiterl,ellsepianolesson
Great lesson thanks colin😊
This is one of the most accurate approach to triads found on CZcams. I've learnt and understood triads. Thanks Simon.
You are so welcome Vijayant! Glad the lesson has helped you in understanding triads :)
Yes I've watched video after video after video trying to learn triads. I wish I would have found this video first.😊
totallly agreee
Thnk u sir it will improve my beginner level
This has got to be the best most simple and understandable explanation of triads that I have come across. I've watched multiple videos on it and I even have face to face guitar lessons with an instructor and this guy was the only one that made me really understand the basics of it and how to use it. Thank you so much!
You are so welcome Don! That makes me very happy to hear it has helped you understand triads. It's one thing to use them, and another to understand them so I am glad my video helped you with this :)
Hi there excellent teaching thank you Iam 72 years old male always looking for stuff to learn on guitar.
@robingladman7783, thank you! You are very welcome and I am glad you liked the lesson :)
This is one of the BEST lessons on triads. You make it easy to understand. Just a lot of memory work. It will take me a bit to learn( mental gymnastics)but it will be so worth it. Thank you for the most amazing aha moments!
You are very welcome! Great to hear you found the video helpful for your playing :)
Absolutely loves your explanations of basic stuff and examples, without showing off each 2 min with advanced execution like so many other online teachers ! Keep up the good work !1
Thanks gillosp99! Glad you like the videos :)
Ha! My pet peeve. I took a shedload of piano and violin lessons as a young ‘un. Not once did a teacher, when I arrived, first make me watch them show off.
I concur.
Love your work Simon this is the best teaching for me I'm abig fan
I have been playing for a year and I'm now realizing that inversions are very important and really help with my progress. Voice leading is very interesting and I think it is like a whole new world to me.
@Coda6766, great to hear! Yes, inversions will totally open up harmony on the guitar to you. I hope this video helps :)
Thanks. Perfectly explained. Opened a new world of understanding for a 70 year old very amateur guitarist. Much appreciated.
That is great to hear Patrick! You are very welcome :)
Pat Martino’s “Symmetrical Parental Forms”:
1) The Augmented triad (1-3-#5)… so play 554 on GBE for a Caug. triad. LOWER any one note to create 3 different MAJOR triads; RAISE any one note to create 3 MINOR triads (the relative Minors of the 3 Majors). So any AUGMENTED triad (easy to find on the guitar) is the SYMMETRICAL PARENTAL FORM of 6 other triads, 3 major triads and their 3 relative minor triads.
2) The Diminished 7th chord (1-b3-b5-bb7)… so play 4545 on DGBE. LOWER any one note to create 4 different DOMINANT 7th chords (1-3-5-b7); RAISE any one note to create 4 different HALF-DIMINISHED 7th chords (1-b3-b5-b7). So each easy-to-find Diminished 7th chord acts as the SYMMETRICAL PARENTAL FORM for 8 other 7th chords, 4 Dominant 7ths and 4 Half-Diminished 7ths.
- Pat Martino was a genius who taught us this way of finding other chord forms. It is definitely worth learning and experimenting with.
RIP Pat Martino.
@m.vonhollen6673, thanks for sharing :)
Pat Martino was certainly one of the greats!
Thank you Simon. I appreciate the pace and clarity with which you teach, in this case about triads. Would appreciate more videos covering the other triads that make up all the notes on the scale.

The 'root note' made sense to me, I get it. Thanks you.
Great to hear Frank! :)
I have been using inversions for years, but not really understanding the underlying mechanics of it, just learned a couple of shapes that had inversions and the rest you just know when it sounds right, but that is limiting. I always fall back to the familiar ones (kind of like acoustic players do with the cowboy chords).
This is fantastic. You provide the shape, but also the underlying reason for the shapes and how to adapt that to different keys and chord progressions. I look forward to practicing this and incorporating it into more of my performances. Can't wait to watch some more videos from you. Thank you!
@charlesgoodwinmusic, you are very welcome! So glad you found this video helpful :) There are other triad videos on the channel if you so a search. Let me know how you go with them :)

I found your channel today and I am amazed at the material in this lesson. I have been playing (simply for self entertainment) rhythm and lead guitar since 1964; I am a copy-cat with a huge repertoire of songs. However, I have never investigated triads and this lesson has opened a new avenue of discovery for me to shoot down. I am looking forward to the journey; many thanks!
You are so welcome Bill! Great to hear the lesson has inspired you to investigate triads.
They are a great tool for your guitar playing in so many ways.
Let me know how you get on with them :)

If you understand the CAGED system you see these all over the place, it's really about understanding where your root, 3rd (or flat 3rd) and 5th are. This video simplifies the concept very nicely of course.

You are the only one who ever mentioned that we are dealing with the top three strings of the guitar. I know this may be obvious for some, but it isn’t if your new to guitar. Especially when you watch someone play it’s difficult to see this. Thank you. It just helps to be more clear when understanding this!
